You do a great job of explaining each step. You don't assume people know anything by skipping ahead, which I love. Camera work is flawless. Tool size and explanations of them are also very clear and essential.
I just ordered new elastomers for my 21r shocks. They were on my 1990 giant ATX880. Can't wait till they get here. I had to order them from a place in Arizona. The old elastomers are disintegrating, so they may take a little work getting out. These forks never been serviced. I know the first 2 owners personally, and they never did it. The bike sat in a bedroom and garage for years and years before i bought it from my friends. I hope these 30 plus year old elastomers come out easier then i expect them to. People mention the spring replacement, i don't believe theyvare available. I could only find the elastomers at one place. Mine were ordered based on my weight.
Thanks so much for these videos, I did everything you demonstrated on my 1995 Gary Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo, the fork was stuck solid, now it works nicely. Really enjoying the bike again. Had to cobble together that extended 5mm hex tool from bits and bobs from the local hardware store.
Considering buying my first MountainBike on Craigslist and I know it'll need to some maintenance. Thanks for all these great videos, you are a fantastic teacher, RJ!
I have a quadra that feels like its completely locked out. No travel at all. Could it possibly help to do this? id rather not put money into it with a rebuild kit..

Friend gave me bike with these forks. Seized no movement at all. Took out elastomers and cannot loosen 5mm whatever is down there. Trek 8000 bike. Not sure wht to do next.
I'm having an issue with the 5mm allen socket. Mine tapers down to 5mm and doesn't go through the hole far enough to turn the bolt. How much past the hole is the bolt because I can't seem to find a single 5mm socket that is as long as the one you have.
Also, I have a 95 Judy XC Cartridge system fork with oil dampener. I read a manual on refilling the cartridges with oil, but I'm worried they are just going to leak all over the place.
Hey, I like your video. You show and explain it all very well. I've got an old Diamond Back Ascent MTB with Rock Shox Quadra 21R on it. I just followed your initial steps on how to pull it apart, but when I got to removing the (you called it the stack), well there was no stack at all inside mine... just a plastic piece (kinda like first part of stack), then a long metal rod came out. Hmm, not sure what to do now. I did take my bike for service last year, but they told me that the Rock Shox are completely stuffed and can't be repaired and that I should buy new shocks. Last year I was thinking that it would cost me a bit too much to be spending so much on such an old bike, but now I'm thinking that I probably do need to go out and buy new shockers. Do you know what would be the equivalent (size, etc.) for these shockers for new shockers? Would love to hear your feedback. Thanks. :-)
Hi I recently purchased a nice Rock Shox Quadra 21R. Would you recommend either a replacement of the Elastomers from suspension Fork Parts or SRP Steed Springs? Thanks for your time and opinion. Great review video!👌🏼

My electric scooter front fork is similar to this fork as far as components. How would you increase the dampening on the current setup? Replace the spring? If so, how do you measure what you’d need and where would you order from? Mine is a 14 inch Chinese fork and bottoms out on bumps so I’m looking for an alternative to factory.
I just acquired a Gary Fisher with the Rockshox Quadra 21R's. When servicing the front forks, is it recommended to replace the original elastomers with springs, or simply replace with new elastomers instead?
I have a Q 21r that is about bottomed out when tire is attached --very little action--when bike is pulled up from bars off ground, wheel and fork just sag back down slowly. Worth tearing it apart and cleaning to resolve issue or should I just look for a replacement? Thanks!

@@keithstone6766 Hi Keith. You need to get this tool I found. It is a triple jointed needle nosed plier. I found it at Lowes. its about 10 inches long more or less ( i don't have it in front of me). perfect tool for what we have to do here. That way you can actually reach down all the way into the tube and you are able to get a grip on every piece of the elastomer stack and pull it out. It takes patience, and a good head mounted flashlight helps too, so you can see down the tube. The pliers allowed me to basically pull everything out. Then I used some mineral spirits as a solvent with an old toothbrush and was able to clean out the remaining crud without damaging the inside of the tube. It took time and patience to get a grip on every piece, but you are very satisfied when its complete. I also located replacement elastomers at an online bike parts supplier.
