Don, I would be interested, because Ive heard it more than once, your thoughs around the elections (canada and usa) and how you feel its particularly a dark period in relation to this.
@@jimmymcarthur1040 yes, very dark, because authoritarianism seems to be on the rise everywhere. Irrational-ist, anti-Democratic sentiments that people used to be ashamed to voice are now out in the open.
Good to here from you again Professor. You mentioned that you still teach courses on psychoanalysis, i was wondering if you still tape your lectures, absolutely loved Freud and beyond.
Terrific Video and good to see you again. I’m curious whether you have ever looked into 12 step programs. To my mind, they offer a path to precisely the ethical conversion and soul development that you speak of (with the added benefit that they are completely free and accessible to anyone.) 12 Step fellowships are so misunderstood in our hyper secular society, that I rarely mention them in any clinical setting. Carl Jung wrote a letter to Bill Wilson, the founder of AA, which says something to that effect even 80 years ago. But cure for addiction and narcissistic misery in an ethical, if not a religious, conversion has worked for me and countless others. In fact, I was almost assuming that the video between you and your son might have touched on this path in regards to addiction treatment, but I was wrong about that. Would love to hear your thoughts.
@@unusualpond I think different approaches work for different people. I tried mini therapies before finding psychoanalysis, which I quickly recognized as the path for me. But I know other people have benefitted greatly from types of therapy that would not have worked for me. We didn’t really address AAor NA in our video. Partly because my son is oriented very much to “harm reduction” and there is conflict between that orientation and 12 step. But I have no trouble believing that 12 step programs have been a salvation to many.
@ thank you for your reply. I agree that all therapies can be valuable and have myself worked in the harm reduction space for many years. Im aware but sad that some see a conflict there instead of a complement of strategies. What I was more curious about was whether you had looked into the actual programs and the steps themselves, in so far as they seem to aim at the precise conversion and restoration of spirit/soul that you aim at in psychoanalysis. Here also I’m not trying to pit one against the other, but was hoping for your “appreciation and critique”.
54:00 was this documentary available for psychoanalysts only or made available to the public? Also, Don has spoken about his mother as above, yet his father in contrast is mentioned older, ill and on his deathbed. Has Don discussed perhaps in another video the effect or influence of his father during his childhood, young adulthood or adulthood? Don mentioned as a young man and perhaps new psychoanalyst, he had narcissistic and deceptive traits. Were these traits developed perhaps by influence of relationship with his father or lack thereof and or his father's character? Has his father had any influence on Don's approach or pursuit of psychoanalysis? Or perhaps influence on the development of his superego, which using psychoanalysis, psychology, life experience personal reflection and religion, Don eventually sought to address, undress or dismantle his young adult Superego, and this long journey eventually resulting in the even tempered, the "good & loving conscience" - ardent and espousing Don, in psychoanalysis we see today? So long story short is there another video where Don has discussed the influence of his father on his pursuit in relationship with psychoanalysis?
if only you uploaded more!
Great to see a new video from you Don. Thanks for the amazing content

Can’t tape them when I’m teaching AIT’s But maybe when I teach programs in the extension division.
@@doncarvethThat would be really cool!
Thanks for the interview! :)
Most welcome

I confess, I have not studied 12 step directly, but I expect you are quite right about the parallel process
@ I absolve you :)
Don could you please give us the name of the documentary about you that you mentioned in this video?
It was a long time ago and I’m afraid it is no longer available

All good questions. Perhaps Dan or someone will do a part two interview with me on these.
