This is such an amazing song. I'm 19 and I got Darkness on the Edge of Town last Friday and this is by far my favorite song on the album. Springsteen is a phenomal songwriter and a grossly underrated guitarist and this solo in the beginning is a testament to how great of a guitar player he is. I wish I had lived and seen this live
This is like my favourite video on UA-cam. The intro that made me love rock, that turned me deeply into music, that makes me cry every time. Bruce Springsteen is a monster of feeling here. Thank you for this intro, Boss, it changed my life
Remember he was playing this during the Peter Frampton and Erice Clapton hard hiting strings days. None of them are out dated to me. THIS great musice is In my soul. STILL ROCKIN. Remember whre you can fro. GREAT DAYS . Never let it go.
If dreams came true, ah, wouldn't that be nice; well this ain't no dream we're living here tonight. tie your hair back in a long white bow; meet me in the fields behind the dynamo. two of the best lyrics ever written.
People always complain that the boss' guitar solos are to basic but they never hear him live. when he plays live it is unbelievable. He proves it all right
I've posted to several of these mind-blowing clips, but the 10 minutes here is probably the best reason why in 1978 there were people who got Bruce and people who didn't, and the difference is people who knew Bruce from the Prove It All Night studio version, and the people who knew him from performances like this... No wonder we thought (still do) he was a rock god. I don't think I've listened to the studio version os Prove It in 25 years...
i watch/listen to some version of prove it all night live from 1978 everyday at least 5 times a day. i love this song. ive probably heard it 500 times and it never gets old or boring, and i always have a hard time shutting it off halfway through. long live the boss, long live bootlegging, long live the darkness tour. where is the 30th anniversary tribute to the darkness tour box set already!? i need more!
Holy crud, that solo in the beginning was quite near to godlike. Sick performance by one of the best bands ever. This guy and band is the shit if it comes to live performance.
@ivanoblu : I think you could be right!..That lil melody's been haunting me since the first time I've heard him play the intro like this, and I noticed how it kept returning on other versions, though a bit different everytime.. But now that you mention it...that might be true.Have to check that out..cool!
@GrafficGuy Thanks for the update! You show me just one example of him playing a solo.....a REAL lead solo in one of his songs. He doesn't. He can't. He's not a guitarist. He's a top 40 song writer. He bought into that in the late '70's and it was totally obvious with songs like Dancin' in the Dark. Top 40.
@charliejg he isn't a great guitarplayer, but he is good. Actualy you cant call him a guitarplayer. He is a musicwriter with great feel. Clapton, Gallager, Page, buddy Guy, those are great guitar players. Bruce is a great musician with amasing feel for songs, and plays guitar with feeling, wich is a lot...
@gungoe : still. he's better than most think..while Clapton's quite overrated, not to mention Jimmy Page who could play VERY sloppy at times...I agree, this vid shows more about feel and charisma than actual technical virtuosity, but it's all in one's point of view of what makes a guitarplayer great..right? Richie Havens (just a name pops into my mind)..no technical wizzard, but boy, what a strum..would make most guitarplayers itch ;-)..I call that 'great'
@charliejg : oh no, not another comment about how good some other player is, please!..Jimi is best? no he's not..Vai? no, he ain't..Vaughan?..nope.. STOP comparing guitarplayers and how great someone technically is compared to the other, cuz it just doesn't make sense...The 'best' guitarplayer in the world is probably living a few streets away from where you live and you will never get to hear or see him ;-)
@qinmoy I never questioned his passion. However, he is hardly underrated as a guitarist. I don't think I've ever seen him play a lead in a single song. Hell, he barely plays any rhythm guitar. It's pretty much a prop for him.
GET THIS STRAIT.Every guitarist has a different style but yes i think Jimi is far superior then guitarists like vai, satriani,COUGH COUGH Steven more- charliejg. But thats my opinion and each guitarist is great but in different ways eg.jimi does more tricks like playing behind head n with teeth n stuff while satriani gets more technical. BUT BRUCE, he plays very raw and with lots of pasion. im sure bruces goal isnt to be the best guitarist ever but i think he is but to play with power and passion
@qinmoy I never questioned his passion. However, he is hardly underrated as a guitarist. I don't think I've ever seen him play a lead in a single song. Hell, he barely plays any rhythm guitar. It's pretty much a prop for him. And, please, this video is hardly a lead of any consequences.
@nkkcboss I'll have to take a listen. But, I'm not optimistic about liking his guitar playing. His phrasing in this song is very weak. And, he can't connect his resolving notes to save his life.
@cambluvsdlb You want to see/hear "awesome guitar playing"? Search for Steve Morse. Then, you'll see why Springsteen isn't even close to being a good guitarist. And, Morse plays with at least as much passion.
Holy shit, every live version I've seen of this from 1978 is just absolutely stunning.
His intro here is probably the best I've heard.

This proves how remarkable Bruce is at playing the guitar, I never knew he was THIS good
It blew my mind...and I've been a Springsteen and E street fan all my life...He truly is and will always be in my book the very best ever!!
This is like my favourite video on UA-cam. The intro that made me love rock, that turned me deeply into music, that makes me cry every time.

Never be another band as complete as this.
Remember he was playing this during the Peter Frampton and Erice Clapton hard hiting strings days. None of them are out dated to me. THIS great musice is In my soul. STILL ROCKIN. Remember whre you can fro. GREAT DAYS . Never let it go.
Wow, great stuff!!!!!!!! Dont ever doubt the boss foss. Bruce is old now, but still great.
This has gotta be one of my absolute favourite videos on UA-cam! Awesome!
If dreams came true, ah, wouldn't that be nice; well this ain't no dream we're living here tonight.

yup. i miss the old stuff too. its all i listen to. wish i could have been there. at least someone recorded it tho......
Sounds incredible for 1978 redo this exact song live with todays technology and the guitar will catch fire

One of his best songs in my opinion.
A beautiful piece of rock history, superbe!
Truely awesome guitar playing. Go Boss!
Holy crud, that solo in the beginning was quite near to godlike. Sick performance by one of the best bands ever. This guy and band is the shit if it comes to live performance.
Man, this is good!
another great one by the BOSS
exactly right...man is awesome!!!
great stuff!!!
incredible bruce the best forever !!!!!!!!!
I was there...
I'd settle for Bruce just to be back in concert right now.
@ivanoblu : I think you could be right!..That lil melody's been haunting me since the first time I've heard him play the intro like this, and I noticed how it kept returning on other versions, though a bit different everytime..
But now that you mention it...that might be true.Have to check that out..cool!
c'est une tuerie ce truc au dessus de tout le bruce
Cool story bro.
Ok...I have to admit: he's the God of Rock.
This kids
is how God plays his guitar
just bruce man..ri.P. Clarence

well anyway there is no best guitarplayer everybody is well in his own style and specials thatfor different guitars were invented !!!
@komikero Princeton 1978, my first concert ever

Shame he quit doing this intro to this song live because it makes it 1000 times better with the killer intro than the studio version imo.
3:15-4:41 I live for this shit 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
@BobReidy It almost sounded like Danny was ready to go on for more, but Bruce starting in again. RIP Phantom
Il ne la joue plus comme ça depuis des année smalheureusement.
I guess the Boss can really do everything...
@charliejg
Hahahahahaha!! That's very funny Segovia!
What do you wanna say about this???????? Better than great!
It's an Esquire ;-)..but, yes, it's the proper way alright :)
God save Clarence Clemons!
@charliejg he isn't a great guitarplayer, but he is good. Actualy you cant call him a guitarplayer. He is a musicwriter with great feel. the begin of this song is like friederick of Patti smith or not?
@nkkcboss I guess it depends what one expects from a lead guitarist.
@charliejg If he's a hack, he's one helluva' hack here my friend!
~5.00: sounds like phil lynott
@charliejg
See previous comment.
The intro sounds a LOT like Patti smiths "Frederick". By the way, I think that Bruce married the wrong Patti xD
Apparently, this video has counted my 93,500 views.
anyone else there who says the boss can´t play guitar? no? no one?
@gungoe : still. he's better than most think..while Clapton's quite overrated, not to mention Jimmy Page who could play VERY sloppy at times...I agree, this vid shows more about feel and charisma than actual technical virtuosity, but it's all in one's point of view of what makes a guitarplayer great..right?

@Molliehachet I disagree. His talent stops abruptly with his guitar playing.
Bruce is gonna go blind at 3:54.

@charliejg
Quite literally, you have no idea what you're talking about.
this is the shit
@nkkcboss I'll have to take a listen. But, I'm not optimistic about liking his guitar playing. His phrasing in this song is very weak. And, he can't connect his resolving notes to save his life.
Why would you show a budding guitarist a Springsteen video? He is a hack.
@cambluvsdlb You want to see/hear "awesome guitar playing"? Search for Steve Morse. Then, you'll see why Springsteen isn't even close to being a good guitarist. And, Morse plays with at least as much passion.
now thats a guitar player
