    Judge Meadows has been living in a blur, reading all the forbidden novels and stories, and I think she just wants to end it with a sense of adventure. She knows she'll die, but it's like dying on the moon as the first astronaut or something epic.

    This was another excellent episode--and I've seen a lot of recaps, and yours is among the best.
    IMO, this episode made Bernard the co-main character of this series, along with Juliette. Although, as you pointed out it is clear that Bernard's Excellent ManCave Adventure contained real revelations and frights for Bernard; he managed to come back like a champ. He flipped-the-script on what the silo dwellers watched when Juliette survived. Taking credit for the Good Tape, AND offering hope that the silo leadership is working on ways for people to survive/return to the outside--which is a huge Lie--was the stuff that Leadership books are made of.
    The internal politics between Bernard & Meadows & Sims could be a main theme of the series, if they chose to, it's that good.
    Going forward, I believe every fan of the show wants each episode to contain parts of Silo 17, and parts of Silo 18. Eventually, they will need to bring Juliette back to Silo 18. The narrative trick will be "how" she manages to return; and "what" will her position be? Will Juliette (as I hope) become Bernard's Official Shadow--because she already knows many secrets, and is dedicated to the survival of the silo dwellers. Also, the tease by Bernard of activities that could allow the people to go outside for at least short periods, is something that Juliette could push as part of the condition for helping Bernard keep the population in line. Of course, there are also many mysteries that we will want answers to about Silo 17.
    I have NOT read any of the books, but I see so many options for going forward, that I hope the writers don't get sloppy.

      Why are you referring to the other silo as 17? While I can accept the arguments that Bernard's silo is 18 (from the flashing key and the hard drive), I have no idea where people are getting 17 from. Is there something subtle in the last episode that I missed?

    • @117Derek
      @117Derek Місяць тому +1

      @@Tau_Zyrillion Multiple online reviews are referring to the new silo as Silo 17.
      But, now that you mention it, I DON'T recall where I first heard it. I do know that most of us believe that Juliette only had enough oxygen to walk to the next silo from her original Silo, that we know is #18 because in the S1 finale that was what was written on Bernard's key that he used to go to his private room to watch Juliette helmet-cam.
      Another possibility is that the Audio caption may refer to the new silo as Silo 17.
      That's the best response I have.

      @Tau_Zyrillion Місяць тому

      @@117Derek Thanks for the reply!
      I agree that Juliette probably went to one of the nearest silos, but it's not clear which one it was when looking at the overhead shot at the end of last season. None of those silos appeared to show a pile of bodies near the entrance. At any rate we don't know how the silos are numbered geographically, so she could just as easily have gone to 19, or one in the next row or circle if it's simply a matter of guessing.
      The caption idea is an interesting possibility but I can't think of a moment in either episode that would call for it. I believe some of the press were able to view the entire second season so maybe the number gets revealed later and someone inadvertently mentioned it in one of their reviews. I guess we'll find out eventually, but without further information it's probably best to consider it as either a potential spoiler, or someone's (likely wrong) guess that for some reason got traction.

    I feel like there’s also some kind of relevance to the water in this episode. Notice how it lingers over the shot of Sims wife filling the glass. In season one it’s mentioned by Gloria that they started putting something in the water to make people forget. Not sure if it’s important or not, but it’s something I noticed.

    I had figured that the silos were in contact with each other (at least each silo's "Bernanrd"), so I was surprised that he didn't know that Russell's silo had rebelled and opened the hatch. I guess if the tunnels below the silos are connected and were flooded, it wasn't something that was coordinated between Russell's and Bernard's silos.

    What's up with the PEZ dispenser still being relevant? Sims asked Bernard if he knew what it was. He says yes. Sims asks if it's important. Bernard says it wasn't but it is now? Did I understand that right? If so it means he knows where it came from when George found it; I don't see what else it could mean. I'm also beginning to wonder if there ever was a rebellion in this silo, since Bernard points out that if it happened there it can happen here. Maybe someone's putting something in MY water - I'm already forgetting the episode. Better go watch it again.

    • @TonyMcDem

      I think he meant that because it became a catalyst for a series of events that led to this crisis, the PEZ dispenser turned out to be important. It wasn't thought to be at first. Seemed harmless enough. Probably a good reason the Founders were so persnickety about relics being verboten.
      Just my two cents. =)

    I look forward to watching your video after work. But I just had to share two thoughts I had about this episode:
    1) I paused to get a closer look at The Order. It mentioned the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), so maybe OHSA is/are/were the Founders.
    2) The relationship of the people of the Silo to history and the outside world reminds me of Attack on Titan. At some point in the past people had to retreat to safety (Walls/Silo), and lost all knowledge of the outside world and history. Now, in AoT, a character mentions this is nonsensical: even if people had to retreat so quickly that they had to leave behind all books (which isn’t the case in Silo), they would still have oral tradition and such. He concludes that there must be some sort of literal mind control, at least in the past at the moment of retreat. The same might be going on here, or might have happened here.

      It's a very interesting and strange topic as well the absence of memories of the world and the past....!!! @TonyMcDem Місяць тому +6

    Why doesn’t Bernard simply point out that the fact Juliette did not return is proof that she died? Anyone who knows her would agree with the logic that had she lived, she surely would have come back to the camera to show them the good news.

    • @JoeRitze
      @JoeRitze Місяць тому +4

      I think the way Bernard spun it was brilliant. If he just talked about her not returning as proof, the immediate retort would be that she is gathering support to come rescue everyone. Or she got captured by outside forces, it seems to me like there are many counter responses to that.
      #dumb guy on the internet, don't mind me

    • @TonyMcDem
      @TonyMcDem Місяць тому

      @@JoeRitze I agree that his spin was effective. But, as soon as he saw the graffiti and heard the rumors, I think it is logical to quell that with the suggestion that if she was still alive, she would have come back over the hill. She knows what it's like for people to be watching and wondering. She would certainly have had the presence of mind to consider everyone's anxiety once she disappeared from view. The more time passes, the more evidence that she must have expired. She's just too considerate of her father and the friends she left behind to keep them in the dark.
      Not taking any of this too seriously. Quite entertained.

    • @ResistanceB.7
      @ResistanceB.7 Місяць тому +1

      The fact that she did not return is not a solid fact that she died because no one ever survived that much outside before even to climb over that hill so no one knows for sure if she is dead or not...!!! That's why Bernard used the tape false story/argument to "boost the silo's morale" with all the false info about Juliet agreed to try it and see if it helps anyway but unfortunately she "died like a hero" to the silo... !!! Nice thought though 😊

    I previously commented that Judge Meadows was costumed in a way to explicitly conjure the look of a ‘house slave’ for the audience. I argued this was a meta-reference because we can see no indication that the construction of race or racial hierarchy, or even the history of slavery, are known in the silo. So this costuming choice is for the audience.
    In this episode, I revised my assessment. She is dressed to conjure Harriet Tubman. My guess is, though she wants her own freedom, she will find herself in the role of engineer of the Underground Railroad. Perhaps she will use the door at the bottom to ferry silo-citizens to other, connected, silos.

    If this has been discussed elsewhere, forgive me. I am only just now taking to the video comments section for this series' analysis.
    Is it just me or do the silos look inexplicably close to one another as well as not quite having a diameter that would account for the interior shots? The view from outside suggest the silos are just a few feet from each other. Considering the engineering feat to make each silo's outer walls resistant to cracking over time like foundations often do, why would they gamble on building them so close to one another? Might they be able to hear noise - albeit muffled?
    And it seems as if some of the levels like for crops and livestock are quite large. Too large to fit in the space outlined by the circular ridges for each silo.
    Am I being too picky? (Probably.) Thanks!

    • @ellen4956

      Actually, the best shape for holding up under the kind of pressure that kind of structure would create, is a hexagon. Like a honeycomb. Maybe under the ground they are fit together that way, which could explain the close proximity. It also could make travel between silos more likely; possibly through the door George found. And we not found out what George meant in the message to Juliette about the water where the door is not being a problem.
