Coming from a monster fish tank, to reef tanks, and now a nano aquascape (partly due to this channel) I would suggest you guys take it SLOW. Reef keeping is about patience, you will go through an ugly phase that can last weeks to months (2 months for me recently) but it will pass. I would suggest weekly water changes and weekly testing, eventually you will learn that some of your corals will tell you how your tank is actually doing. We typically encourage quarantining fish and adding more aggressive fish (this can include clownfish) last to let the more peaceful ones establish territories. GL and looking forward to this

Love seeing you come to the dark side! 😎 So excited to see what you decide to do with these and to follow along. As you build out the reef tank side, you could consider (and I'd love to see) you use the macroalgae side essentially as your sump slash refugium. It's a perfect way to manage your nitrates and nutrient balance by essentially manipulating natural filtration. Just be aware that it can affect your trace element chemistries and, depending on what you've got growing, can compete with your corals for necessary things like calcium, etc. Given your experience with planted tanks, though, I'm sure you guys know that and will take to it all really well and far faster than those of us who don't have that aspect of the hobby under our belts going in.

Looking forward to seeing how these progress. I have a little fluval evo saltwater tank and a evolution aqua aqua caper 1500 and can confirm the saltwater tank is much more involved than freshwater for the first few months, eventually the tank settles and it doesn’t really need too much intervention. Same as with fresh though, the bigger the tank the easier it is to look after.

There have been many advancements in marine aquaria keeping particularly from Germany since I entered the hobby many years ago. Some basic things have remained the same. First, the larger the marine tank the more stable the system. Once established you can’t break it down every few months without reestablishing the system however water changes are crucial. Most importantly many coral reef fishes (angelfish, butterflyfish, damselfish, etc) are highly territorial and much more intelligent than their freshwater counterparts. I would rely on Matt’s experience setting up and stocking the tanks. Also; keeping inverts and (most) fish together is a bad idea for numerous reasons. I hope those screens/frames are plastic; saltwater is highly corrosive with metal.

so excited to see some saltwater. i have mixed reef tanks as well as planted tanks. i love them both. P.S. I highly recommend using the jump gaurd on the saltater tanks. Especially dartfish like firefish gobies are very jumpy. I've even had clowns jump. And dont get me started on diamond gobies (which would be too large for a nano tank anyways). They LOVE to jump. Also, i've never found those nano skimmers to be of much use. I took my skimmer off my RedSea Max Nano. Just keep up with water changes and you dont need a skimmer on a nano tank.

Awesome! I’m so tired of BRS trying to sell me on things so I’m excited to see what you and Matt believe are truly necessary for reef tanks and what is just a perk.
Also, I feel I should say this. A month and a half ago I had zero tanks. You’ve now got me so pulled in I have 8 with an 9th on the way. I’ve got a 55G, two 60G, two 75G, a 20G, and two 2.5G. 9th tank will either be a 10G or a 180G. Maybe both. Probably should finish building all my tanks first and getting some of them established.

I’ve never had the “stones” to attempt a saltwater aquarium. I considered it adventurous when I went from plastic plants and hard scape to live plants, wood and rocks. I do like to walk down the saltwater aisle at the fish store and admire the markings, colors and variety of life available though. Like having a small piece of ocean in your home. I just worry I’d come home to the Dead Sea because of something I did wrong. I do like the way everything came as a kit though. Looking forward to seeing how it all takes shape. Good luck guys and Happy Holidays

This is really exiting, I've been following your channel for years.
Started tanks, made ecosystems, bred fish, bred plants, bred shrimp, sold it all, got better at scaping, ...
Recently with all this lessons from you, the other amazing channels, books and a lot of testing started a side business lease aquariums b2b.
Next year I might have a profit, if so I'm planning to start salt water at home, starting the same learning cycle and if the business is still going, adding salt in a year of 3. What are the odds that both you and MJ aquascape are making from fresh to salt water starter journeys this year!

If you ever get the chance, go to China and check out the pet fish trade there.. they are WAY cheaper than anyone else in the world, they have gadgets that'll blow your mind and AMAZING looking fish including many species that aren't available outside of China.
The funny part about marine tanks is the smaller the tank is the easier it is to lose all the fish in it. The larger the volume of water the more wiggle room you have before everything goes toxic and kills thousands of dollars of fish and coral. Coral reefs are the Glasgow of the ocean.

My biggest advice for starting a marine tank. Dont put your lights on for at least 4 weeks while you cycle and increase the lighting to 1 hour every week to get you up to how ever many hours you want your lights on. That TMC tanks back sump is terribly designed.

While you likely already know, but in case you don't, I would keep an eye on the sponges in the back for filtration, they have sometimes cause issues with nitrates in saltwater tanks. I would personally switch it out with different media in the long run. Should be fine for now.
