Thanks for the review. My jury is still out. I would recommend watching automatic gainsay's video where he hooks up the minibrute with a microbrute. It may be another viable option for those of us that own both.
Hi Bo, thank you for the comparison ! Both are attractive machines with their own positive aspects. Not an easy choice for sure. For sounds manipulation the keyboard version is a bit more interesting in my opinion. Have a nice day.
In case you already got some gear it might not matter so much but for first timers it is difficult. On one hand the after touch keyboard and otoh the more flexible and user friendly sequencer.
Another great video Bo. For me I've already decided on getting the 2S as I like using independent sequencers from different machines and then linking them up in a chain via MIDI. It wouldn't be the synth that's on the "play it live" duties as I would prefer to sequence with it and then tweak the parameters. The sequencer seems to operate in a similar way to the Drumbrute so I would be at home with using it and I think it would be a great companion to the Drumbrute so it makes sense to me to opt for the 2S. I do understand your preference for keys though. I would too if the keys had the options of the 2S sequencer and a longer keyboard. Looking forward to the next in the series of videos.
It’s a tough choice for sure. I like that the 2 has a deeper arpeggiator, full size keys, a pitch/mod wheel, and all the cv connections for the keyboard/aftertouch and mod wheel would make for some great performance possibilities. Having a sequence running with separate modulations on the aftertouch, mod wheel, and velocity would give lots of variation to a sequence. Not as much as the 2s but could get you in a similar playing field. The 2s has per step modulation and various scales which is great but I typically use a sequencer for basic bass patches while leaving the experimental tones to the looping envelops and drone functions. I went with the keyboard model but I can see the value in both.
thanks, you convinced me, in my local shop there is sale for key verison and i wanted sequencer but for 170 $ less( 530$ total) i think its a good deal
Memiczność My setup right now is the Minibrute 2, Dreadbox Nyx 2, Minilogue XD, and a Drumbrute Impact. I also have the Hydrasynth on preorder. And I have a few small synths like the Bastl Kastle, Casio SK-1, PO-33, Stylophone, etc. How about you my friend? And I haven’t played it live yet. I’ve actually only owned mine for a couple of weeks. Sold all my gear recently to start over from scratch.
2S, after the RackBrute let down. I was hoping RackBrute was going to be sans keys and sans sequencer then I would have went with that option. Still have to convince myself that I need another mono synth though.
I would have hoped that they would have announced that the synth part, can be detached and that it was actually a eurorack module. And that there would be 3 versions (after the first announcement), one keyboard version, one desktop, with power and midi inputs and a eurorack version. I do like the 2s more than I would have just a basic desktop module...
Hello, I would like to ask you a question, where do you find these 3.5mm patch bay cables and their connectors? I search the net and my suppliers, I can not find anything, I am in Europe, thank you for your videos and shares, cordially
These are both cool products and I love the patch bays, and that 4 input patch node thing you've got. Never seen one before. But I can't justify buying more synths until I learn how to use the beatstep pro and minibrute I already own a hell of a lot better.
I would like it so much if Arturia made a MiniBrute SK (sequencer, keyboard) for some more $$$. I really like having the sequencer and all the options it gives you but coming from a piano back ground I really like being able to play keys without a sequencer as well. While I understand that you can hook up a midi keyboard to the MiniBrute 2S I really like having fully self contained units.
My opinion on the matter, and I play keyboard better than sequencer, is that it would be better if we free'd ourself from built in keyboards. You never know what the keys will feel like on a synth, and with midi, you can make sure you have a keyboard you like. The range of built in keyboards are often limited. And there are new types of controllers, some keyboard like, that because they don't use traditional keys, can open up for more expression in the play (at least cheaper than the same level of expression would be on standard type keys). Midi works great for standard keyboards. The limitations of midi lies elsewhere, so don't worry about that. But my idea, and I have been saying this in various of forums, is masterkeyboards with 19" rack-mounts. A 61 key keyboard is wider than 2 such racks. And some 88 key keyboards are as wide as 3. That way all modules could come in 19" rack format (or with rack format extentions kits). If all makers were on board, you would be able to select the keyboard feel and action you prefer, and with modulation wheels/sticks or whatever that maker has. One could turn it in to a self contained synth, by just using it for that particular module. Or one could use it as a base, replacing modules when one feels like it. Potentially, it could also become a standard at venues to offer such keyboards, so that those playing live would only have to bring the modules, and not a full keyboard synth.
Doesnt the keystep have smaller than normal keys? Otherwise, that would have been my suggestion as well, for anyone wondering. With those modulation tracks, the 2s, just feels superior to mee, there should have been some price difference in my mind. But perhaps that keyboard is quite expensive. And the sequencer part uses components seen on a few arturia products, so they have probably gotten the price down on the hardware part of the sequencer.
honestly that sounds better than getting the 2 because the Keystep is better than the sequencer on the Minibrute 2, but the 2S sequencer is unmatched by anything arturia have released yet.
Which way exist to trigger the sequencer on both machines? MidiClock and a triggerIn of course, but maybe with a simple gatesignal like the microbrute(!!!) ?
great video bo! I'm highly considering getting this, can you link a site that sells those mini cables i know i will need more :) also id really like to get some of those mini CV splitters!!!! in reason they have a CV merger/splitter, i never knew those were an actual concept :P
Kieren Moore it does sound good but it's so limited it's basically a 2 osc mono-synth with an 8-step sequencer and no midi. The patch bay is nice but it's expensive for what it is.
Excellent video Bo. I'm not sure what these devices are selling at. I see the s version replacing the Spark series. Gives me something to think about though, thanks.
Some questions: If I would use the first minibrute as keyboard, wouldn't it be like having both versions? Would the 2S be able to record the input midi of another keyboard, how are pitchbends achieved, you have to program them I guess otherwise? Thanks
If you tend to use a DAW like Ableton Live with your synths, is there any point to the 2S? I assume the keyboard version would take the place of a separate Keystep, right?
Are you a producer? MiniBrute 2 Keyboard, just more chill in a studio and you have a fine sequencer in your DAW, that will be linked for production anyways. For live, rather MiniBrute 2 S with an additional Midi-Keyboard.
Get the keyboard version and sequence it with a beatstep pro, or sequencer version and get groovy with a keystep? XD I know I want both equally much, but I think the sequencer version is more interesting as the workflow is so different from what I am used to :)
Bo, how does this new Minibrute sound in comparison to the Matrixbrute? Are the VCOs, and the Steiner filter identical? I saw the latest Sonic Lab review of the Minibrute and thought it was thunderous! Nick commented on how he thought Arturia had tweaked the brute ranges and other areas of the sound to give it a broader sonic variety. Couldn't recall if the Matrixbrute was the same.
Hello Bo, I was wondering to how many analog synths can I send sequeneces at the same time and If I can sequence the 2 Osc from the minibrute, apart, like Osc 1 to the the bass, Osc2 a diferent sequence
it was a long time ago that I had the MB2S and I think the answer is no, I dont think you can rec into its sequencer. But please double check, long time since I used one
Does a 2S with a MIDI Controller give you the absolute best of both worlds? Does the 2S respond to velocity and aftertouch (from an external MIDI Controller)?
Can you slightly modify the pitch of each step in the 2S? I've been studiyig indian music for the last 6 years and would like to incorporate indian pitches into synthesis. I know the monologue can be fine tuned but I would really like to work with the 2S.
Now that the Prologue was anounced and i realised i can`t afford it, the Minibrute looks very attractive. Sometimes you need to leave high end and go back to the basics. Yes no polyphony. But- One voice , many possibilities, Semimodular, Sequencer and and ...
Yes it is.... I was really planning on selling the Minilogue and my Minitaur to buy it but was expecting 1200-1300 max... The weird thing is now i am looking at the Prophet 08 Rev2 with a different eye and the Sonicstate review ,, wow. It sounds really cool. And you can find the module version for 1000 used.
Take the OSC output of the 2, connect it to the input of Matrix. Take the output of the matrix and put it back before the filter of the 2. I guess you could use the Insert on the Matrix And then you have a 3 Brute OSC synth that can offer a series of 3 filter and it would get back in to the Matrix before the analog effects. And then of course patch and matrix the *pip* out of it =) Too bad there is no post-mixer pre filter output on the Matrixbrute... would have been nice to patch the OSC out, and then back in to the synth.
perhaps connecting the 2nd OSC of the 2 to the master-output input-connector, to have it drone just in to the effects of the Matrix, without being filtered or passing through the amp-stage. And of course play around with that looping A/D, with various of modulators as source. Could be really fun, especially since the Matrix would have already provided the typical amp envelope stage, so that it could come in as an effect (the matrix has a mod sequencer track... otherwise that is something the 2s modulator sequncer tracks could have come in handy for... but you also got elektron stuff with CV sequencing...). Some kind of stereo-creating effect on that. I so wish I had those two right now, to try that out (or the 2S instead of the 2"K").
If he gets to keep one, he still worked for them, by promiting it, so it would not exactly be for free. And the video may just be 30 minutes or so, but preparing, and exploring is a lot of hours. I think they could have let him keep it all. As long as there is no strings attached, that he gets to keep them, even if he would have given them the worst possible review, I think there is no harm in giving reviewers products....
Jon Holstein - Well, that's the thing, isn't it. I was actually joking - but if he IS receiving gifts from reviewers, he should at least be disclosing that. I saw that some other reviewers who had made constructive criticism of past Arturia products, did not receive review models of these 2 new units. Also woth remembering is that BoBeats got preview units to post videos on the day of release. Some of those channels you talk about, may be getting the products for review at a later stage, than before announcements. Oh so you've got a Digitak and a Maschine as well? I think I left mine in the back of a taxi along with my Fairlight CMI... :-) I'll be getting the 2s. Keyboards are cheap.
None of the above ... either would be great if I had modular GAS. and then there is this ... another day, another Brute ... www.arturia.com/rackbrute-3u/overview

Nice stands for your synthesizers!
Where did you buy them 😊
I want to buy a MiniBrute 2, but it's the exact same dilemma I agonised over 34 years ago when choosing a Roland SH101 or the MC202.

J Jolly midi keyboard.
Buy both, get the rack, link them and put them all in a custom built case. Simple!
J Jolly I like keys, but more than two octaves. For me, too much fiddling with the octave buttons with such small keyboards.
Get the 2S and plug in a Keystep via midi, you've got both then!

I don't know yet which one I'm getting, but I'm definitely not buying a Moog DFam.
Heathcliff I got excited about that Moog only to find out it’s just basic Moog gear as usual.
Probably with a kickass sound/tone, though ... ?
Kieren Moore it does sound good but it's so limited it's basically a 2 osc mono-synth with an 8-step sequencer and no midi. The patch bay is nice but it's expensive for what it is.
Heathcliff I'm with you, it's not real exciting. I hate to say that, I love Moog, but I don't find it interesting.
moog is always expensive..... but I guess it's for people who gig A LOT? build quality is nearly unmatched...
nice one Darling
Excellent video Bo. I'm not sure what these devices are selling at. I see the s version replacing the Spark series. Gives me something to think about though, thanks.
Does either save patches into memory like the Elecktron products?
No

Can you use the 2S' sequencer to sequence other gear via midi?
Yes I belive so but I have not tried it
Arturia already has the MiniBrute 2 and 2S English manuals online:
www.arturia.com/support/updates&manuals
If you tend to use a DAW like Ableton Live with your synths, is there any point to the 2S? I assume the keyboard version would take the place of a separate Keystep, right?
Yepp. A 2s is pretty pointless with a daw. Unless you really want that external sequencer
Are you a producer? MiniBrute 2 Keyboard, just more chill in a studio and you have a fine sequencer in your DAW, that will be linked for production anyways. For live, rather MiniBrute 2 S with an additional Midi-Keyboard.

Hi Bo! Have you tried using the 2S in connection with a DAW and utilizing USB MIDI? If yes, how did the sequencer integrate with a DAW?
I never had the chance to try that :-)

Hi! Great video!
Can you tell me if using a Keystep or another keyboard can insert notes (step rec or realtime rec) into the 2S?
Thanks a lot for all!
it was a long time ago that I had the MB2S and I think the answer is no, I dont think you can rec into its sequencer. But please double check, long time since I used one

is this sync with drumbrute
It's too obvious and we see it on the patch bay, plus the midi ^^
So the best is to get both ;)
The 2s looks more promising because it’s the the 2 but with a better sequencer. Buy a midi controller and you got both.
That is what I just did after watching this. I already have the Keystep, and just got the 6U Rackbrute, 2S, and Mother 32 which I rack mounted.
Or get a beatstep pro and a minibrute 2
Potato Vegeta that’s a more expensive combo, though.
I can ask if they both have the same recording system
Ask away!
Now that the Prologue was anounced and i realised i can`t afford it, the Minibrute looks very attractive. Sometimes you need to leave high end and go back to the basics. Yes no polyphony. But- One voice , many possibilities, Semimodular, Sequencer and and ...
Prologue looks bad ass, but man expensive!
*Better you take both, for every Situation ;)*
You got a Matrixbrute bo , remember ? :) i d rather take the s2 to more modulations than 2 octave of almost the same keys (little bit shorter) .
Exactly the combination of the MiniBrute 2 with the MatrixBrute will tear everything up, quickly a demonstration ^^
Good idea to combine the two synths. Need to figure out some fun way :-)
Take the OSC output of the 2, connect it to the input of Matrix. Take the output of the matrix and put it back before the filter of the 2. I guess you could use the Insert on the Matrix And then you have a 3 Brute OSC synth that can offer a series of 3 filter and it would get back in to the Matrix before the analog effects.
And then of course patch and matrix the *pip* out of it =)
Too bad there is no post-mixer pre filter output on the Matrixbrute... would have been nice to patch the OSC out, and then back in to the synth.
Jon Holstein and theres us a Good enveloppe follower on the MB That converts audio to Cv
perhaps connecting the 2nd OSC of the 2 to the master-output input-connector, to have it drone just in to the effects of the Matrix, without being filtered or passing through the amp-stage.
Which one is Arturia letting you keep for free? ;)
If he gets to keep one, he still worked for them, by promiting it, so it would not exactly be for free. And the video may just be 30 minutes or so, but preparing, and exploring is a lot of hours.

Sure, Bo should disclose if he got to keep the unit or were offered to buy it at a reduced cost.
But I still feel he would deservs that, because of the work he put in, if that was the case.
if i have keystep and beatstep the best is buying the microbrute
Solid advice!
micrubrute is no where near as capable as the Minibrute 2 duo... But is sure is cheaper.
no, buy a 2S for more sequences, and buy a microbrute for inline addition, and patchbay interactions with the new minibrute!
The minibrute 2(S) is a better synthesizer than the microbrute, and have a better sound.
You already have both!....the matrix brute lol
I think one collect all the Bruties, and build a poly (using a midi rotation device and splitter)... Even if no matter the capability of each and every device, if it was limited to the sound sculpting of the one with least of that (MicroBrute, if that is the most basic version one has), it could still be enough for a poly sound.
I think I need both 🤣
Lol, Why not a minibrute 2s WITH Keys?
Keystep + a 2S perhaps?
Can I use any midi keynpbard with the 2 s
Oh so you've got a Digitak and a Maschine as well? I think I left mine in the back of a taxi along with my Fairlight CMI... :-) I'll be getting the 2s. Keyboards are cheap.
2s+keystep, easy
which one? hmmmm? i'll take the model D!
hey Bo, can you use the sequencer in the 2S to control another synth through cv or midi like say the MS 20 Mini ?
Yes that is correct, not sure what voltages the ms20 uses but in theory yeah
Yes and no. Yes you can sequence other gear, just not the MS20 in particular. It’s oscillators uses htz/oct instead of the standard v/oct.
I wonder why you say 'keystep to the beatstep' twice in a row.. lol
None of the above ... either would be great if I had modular GAS.
and then there is this ... another day, another Brute ... www.arturia.com/rackbrute-3u/overview
I feel like they were intended to work together. they want people to buy both of them

He Bo Again. Terms matter. A splitter Kabel is something different than a patch Kabel.
Look up Hosa hopscotch cable or knucklebone, does are often referred to as passive splitters
Ja ! Sometimes word suggestion jumps to German. Kabel for cable. And I anm an dyslexia poet.
But maybe I am splitting hairs on this subject.
The term you are looking for is a multiple
A multiplier often refers to a module. A Knucklebone or hopscotch cable can be referred to as a splitter and/or multiplier.
A Splitter splits out single output s from cable containing more than one signal
No coffee? I'm contemplating a thumbs down on this one :D
