      Classic Gaming Quarterly I'm going through your channel and noticed that you've done more of these in the past so I'm going back and watching them. Quick question, where is the best place to pick up old video game magazines? Like, where do you shop for them typically?

    • @CGQuarterly
      @CGQuarterly  8 років тому

      Samuel Rivera eBay and video game forums. Every once in a while you'll find a comic book store that carries them, or a used book store than also sells used magazines (like Bookman's in the Phoenix area).

      Classic Gaming Quarterly good tip! I'll try those places out. There is a vintage video game store close to me (digital press in Clifton NJ) that sells them (decent selection) and I always wondered where else I could pick some up from. Thanks man.

    Now I’m getting addicted to all these lets read videos! I love talking, listening, and reading anything about retro systems. So Nostalgic to me looking back like this and to stuff and articles I’m sure I’ve discussed with my friends as teenagers in the late 80’s early 90’s. I can’t get enough of these videos

    Great stuff! Game mags were my childhood! The internet is awesome with that instant gratification, but it was always super special getting your new issue at the store or in your mailbox, then spending the next month studying every page until you memorized it.

    What a blast from the past! I love reading my old game magazines. Gamepro and EGM were two of my go to books. My favourite issue of Gamepro was issue 113 December 1998 (I even have it scanned!) It had fun characters like Tom "The Thumb" Blake, Major Mike and Air Hendrix and great hardware reviews. It's such a joy to flip through and see some amazing games that were due to be released that year. Ah, memories!
    Thanks again for a great upload. I enjoy your videos so much that anytime I need some nostalgia I re-watch some launch videos. You're one of my favourite uploaders and a total gentleman. Keep up the good work!

    +Classic Gaming Quarterly Man, hearing you recall all these memories you have from your childhood, REALLY makes me regret the football
    stadiums-worth of hard drugs, alcohol, pills, and pot that I put into my body over the 33 years of life I've lived so far. I'm sober for 2 years now, but the damage is done. Seeing that Road Runner Atari game, jogged my memory, and I realized that until now, the days and days worth of time me and my mom spent playing that game, were blanked out of my head. It's a great memory though, so thanks I guess :). Great retrospective here tho, I'll be watching a lot more.

    I clicked "add a message to your video" when I published it, but maybe it didn't work. I announced a while back on Facebook and Twitter that I was putting the N64 launch episode on-hold for a while, but I know that most of you don't see that stuff. I have some other awesome videos planned for the rest of this year though, including at least one new launch video. So stay tuned and as always thanks for watching!

    Keep 'em coming. Love these episodes.
    I kind of have an idea where you do Nintendo Power + Sega Ages + EGM + GamePro in a mega episode all from the same approximate month/issue preferably in the 1993-1994 period at the height of the 16-bit wars. To have a kind of grand view of what the landscape looked like from slightly different perspectives.
    A good pick for me would be fall 1994 which is a bit later, but it avoids you retreading the same games from the 1993 EGM you did.

    I think issue 3 was the first one where they released monthly. I had that issue. I had this issue, too! The Super Mario Land map brings back memories. I wound up buying SML again for 3DS a few years ago. Still a nostalgic favorite.
    After years passed, they said their early artwork just captured video game culture. No specific games.

      Classic Gaming Quarterly It used to be Retro Gamer but I'd been a sub for years and wanted a change. Games (TM) mag now. It's focus is on modern gaming. It still has a retro section at the back so I get a small fix which is good enough for me nowadays.

    • @CGQuarterly
      @CGQuarterly  8 років тому +2

      Arcadiality Yeah, Games (TM) is good. I can get that here, as well. Although here the British gaming mags are always a month behind. They must send then on a slow boat.

      @Arcadiality 8 років тому +1

      Classic Gaming Quarterly A slow boat is better than no boat,you could say. I have most old games I want and the PS4 reignited my enthusiasm for modern gaming again. I say that but I loved the Xbox 360 but just grew weary from 2013 ish to Jan 2016. Currently blasting through Axiom Verge. All that PS4 power for a SNES type game :)

    I like these Let's Read Retrogaming Magazine videos and caught up on all of them. It brings back a lot of great memories. I was 10 years old when this issue of GamePro came out. GamePro was one of my favorite gaming magazines back in the day that I was subscribed to. I subscribed to multiple gaming magazines from the late 80s to the mid 2000s, such as Nintendo Power, GamePro, Electronic Gaming Monthly, Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine, and Game Informer. Although it eventually became easier and cheaper to just look up gaming news on the internet, but I still miss the good ole days of gaming magazines. What a great time it was to be a gamer in those days!
    Btw, you mentioned you almost got an Atari 7800 Jr. console back in the day, but I don't believe the 7800 ever had a Jr. version. The Atari 2600 Jr. was released in 1986 and was made to be cost reduced and look more modernized like the 7800. The Atari 2600 Jr. was actually the first console I ever owned back in 1986. Then I went on to the 7800, and then experienced one or more consoles from each console generation throughout the years, including this current generation.
    Anyway, keep up these great Let's Read videos and I'll look forward to the next!

    30:48 I never noticed this before, but when Super Mario Bros. 3 shows up in The Wizard, there's film artifacts on the game screen, so they were were just showing the game playing on a reel.
    By the way, did you ever wonder how Jenny Lewis knew where the warp whistles were? My theory is that she had the Honey Bee adapter and a Famicom version of the game, which released in Japan the previous year.

  • @SuperFlashDriver
    @SuperFlashDriver 7 років тому +2

    Here's what I like about your videos:
    1. Your voice: (Which I don't mind because I also have a low voice but slightly higher then yours, if you were able to watch my news updates you would get an idea of how I sound like). Your voice itself explaining the issues (which my sister use to have a nickelodeon magazine), you explaining it just makes it sound calming, almost like I have a second person explaining to me what these mean and what they are. And that's where I like the advertisements because they're just very interesting to look at (Sometimes I binge watch on AsSeenOnTV commercials for a reason, there's a reason I love commercials is because they're trying to get you something that may not be necessary but it's how they do the commercial and the types of products/company they advertise for, money was never on my interests when it came to commercials. Heck, I use to watch a lot of 1980's movie trailes and 1980's commercials, there's a person by the name of 80sCommercialVault that has TONS of 1980's volume commercials, 1970's and 1990's commercials, just classics to look at based on what his family has recorded using VHS or online). There's a reason Ads told me about some of these games. Without it, I would have not known a lot of stuff in my childhood. However, we personally never had nintendo power magazines although we usually get gamecube games that would have nintendo power advertisement cards inside of the games itself along with the manual.
    2. Retro gaming: This is the reason why I came to your channel was to find any history on consoles or any games that I haven't heard about that I wanted to see what they looked like and one of those channels (Besides games n' play) was yours. And you summed up one of my favorite consoles, the PS1 very well. I've seen a documentary of it many years ago back in 2011 and one of those games I remember hearing about was Silent Hill and Resident Evil as the scariest games to people. And I agree that they both are scary, although Resident Evil to me made me jumpscared more then Silent Hill.) Anyway, your interest on retro gaming between 1985 and 2000 (or so) is what I really love about your channel because I'm a huge fan of retro gaming. There's just nothing better then to turn on the console (without playing online or being online at all times), play the games and spend hours on it. Since I use emulation a lot, I can play games that I don't even own and have it in my computer. And it was part of my childhood with multiplayer as well. So that's why I love retro gaming.
    And 3. Your explainations, Q&As, and the launch videos are nice to listen to. Even if I'm doing something else, I can just have the audio from yoru video on my speakers in the background of my house while I do something else (even working on homework). The launch videos is what I really go for but I decided to try you talking about the issues and the moment you go to the next few pages, I love it. Personally I wish I would be able to find a free copy of these in some place like a museum or to have for just a rental in my house and then give it back to someone that really wants to own it. I would look through the magazine to find three things:
    One, the reviews and text,
    Two, the game titles and the screenshots,
    Three, advertisements. (I'm in love with advertisements by the way but the Ads nowadays don't excite me as much as the past has, the past had a lot more fun in the commercials similar to japanese advertisements they have ever since the 1980s. The game watch JPN commercial comes to my mind when I think of classic japanese commercials because of that catchy tune.)
    That's all I have for now that I like your channel. I thought I subscribed on my main account but I didn't, I subscribed on my ExtremeReviewer101 account but not my SuperFlashDriver account. So I did the same to my SFD account to subscribe to you.

    Hey CGQ, I remember when I was a kid I used to watch a show called "Video Power" which went through different iterations but I remember some game show elements where the contestants would play different games. I remember watching the Neo Geo games and drooling over the awesome graphics! I could never afford one (or the games for that matter) but would love to see a video on the launch of it or a video on "Video Power", "GamePro" or any other video game show.

    3:00 the reason for that is many states considered raffles to be a form of gambling(?) and had laws against that, but skill based contests where approved of where if there are multiple winners (basically almost everyone), they're then allowed to choose the winner by random draws. Kind of the same line as 'skill-testing questions' back in the day.

    Enjoyable video. I remember that the Disney channel wasn't available on my cable service . When they offered it for free for a week, I thought it was the best. I loved the Mickey mouse club!

    I think the oldest magazine I own is an issue of Game Players--but it's not the Game Players (or Ultra Game Players) that Chris Slate worked for. It's much older than that. It's from 1989 or 1988 and it's actually written on kinda newsprint paper. I remember it clearly. It talked about a game called Amagon, had single screens and descriptions for like 100 games, and ended with an article about the Life Cycle--an actual exercise bike that you connect to your NES. I should dig it out of my closet for old time's sake.

    19:25 The Atari 2600 was actually doing quite well in the late 1980s. The $50 "2600 Jr" model was a hit, and the wave of "red box" cartridges were some of the best ever seen on the system. S ebody dumped Atari's internal sales data on Digital Press years ago, and it showed the 2600 Jr sold something like 6 million units. My number may be off, but it was millions and profitable. Very surprising considering the NES dominance, but Atari's cheap price made it a great starter option. And, as we all know, Atari 2600 games are still being made to this day, thanks to Atari Age.

    As a Zelda II fan I was interested in read about the question that was written in and their answer. If you pause at 26:04 you can read that the writer is stuck at palace 3 (Island Palace) because they need fairy magic.
    The authors incorrectly say to use jump in Mido town to get on top of the church and into the basement. If you follow their advice you will get the downthrust which won't help you enter the third palace. The correct answer is to get the water of life from a cave in the first part of the game and bring it to a woman in Mido town.
    I just thought it was interesting to see how inaccurate information could probably be back then. (Also that poor kid.)
    P.S. I love these videos. I think they're actually more interesting to me than the launch ones which are what drew me to the channel initially.

      That's freaking GamePro for you! Glad you like the videos, and agree that they are definitely quite a bit different than the launch shows. I certainly have no plans to stop making either. I'm just trying to get a different episode out-the-door at the moment, but will then hopefully have a new read-through to work on.

    • @CGQuarterly
      @CGQuarterly  8 років тому

      Hey Tristan. Thanks so much for your kind words! Trust me, I too wish I uploaded more often. Unfortunately it's hard trying to balance work and family with UA-cam, especially when my videos are pretty labor-intensive to make. In an ideal world, I would win the lottery so that I could just stay home and make videos for fun! I don't have a Patreon account, but I appreciate that you'd ask. I don't really feel comfortable asking people to donate money to the show when I have such an erratic upload "schedule". If you'd like to help out though, you can buy a "Classic Gaming Quarterly" t-shirt here: amzn.to/2fq4HmC That way the show gets some money, but you get something cool in return. Thanks!!

    Golf games are often great fun. I'm not into golf otherwise. For Mega Man 2, I strictly follow the weakness order, with Air Man having vulnerability to the standard shot. I deal with Metal Man fifth. Tengen is definitely pronounced with a hard G sound, but the ten-jen pronunciation is very common. I really enjoy the magazine read alongs. Thank you.
