Loved the closing remarks, especially, "The past cannot be undone, but it can be seen for what it was. ... an opportunity to reevaluate the European conquest of the Americas. It is only by broadening our understanding of the past that we can build a more equitable future."
I agree, so long as context is taking into account. Hearing what people did in history and condemning them without understanding the context of that history is the basis of ignorance.

I did not knew who Howard Zinn was until today, I´m not from the US obviously, since I was watching a lecture where he was getting pretty trashed for a lot of things, like telling a more accurate version of what really happened with columbus discovery of the "new world". But I think he did a excellent job presenting those facts to students in the US & give then a real view of "history".

Columbus was not born i italy but in Portugal as the evidence show. Columbus was not his real name. Until his death his children asked him for his real name, but he never told them. Columbus was of jewish origin and came from a wealthy family in Portugal. He had most likely already information about where to go since there where other travelers from spain in the "new world" before him. Spain wanted monopolism over the sea traveling to and from the new world in order to gain money & power.

As Mary Grabar, Carol Delaney, Rafael, Michael Knowles, Larry Schweikart, and others have shown, Columbus haters have deliberately omitted and quote-mined The Admiral of the Ocean Sea's words to paint him as a monster, when in reality, he was a heroic missionary. Columbus said the Arawaks, would make fine servants of God; Zinn deliberately left out the last two words to tar him as a slaver. Another Columbus hater, Dylan Matthews, quoted Columbus out of context to paint him as a pedophile/sex slaver. Columbus talks about girls as young as nine and ten being sold in a letter to Juana la Torres, but Matthews leave out the very next sentence, where the Italian explorer calls it a violent calumny by turbulent persons. As Pat Condell said, the truth doesn't matter to "progressives, what's correct is what matters.
