    Keeping tax separate makes it obvious. GST was 7% when introduced. Now it’s 5%. In the UK, VAT has been slid up to 20% without people noticing.
    Also if the tax is separate, stores can’t raise prices unfairly. In the UK when they raise the tax or duty rates, even a small mark up means stores will 'round up' to the nearest .99p. Meaning a £4.99 item will go to £5.99 on the shelf, even if the tax increase is only a few pence

    Although we are having a cold spell this week, the Pacific Coast of Canada has mild winters with few days or even nights below freezing, and snow is ‘Breaking News’ here. . So basically we are not cold and we are constantly telling people that no, it is not cold in (our part of) Canada. We also have Palm Trees (Windmill Palms) and Hummingbirds all winter. We are also not humid in summer, and not as hot as Ontario. Also very few mosquitoes or biting bugs! Also very little brick houses and brick buildings like in Ontario. Nothing like Niagara Falls, but we are surrounded by mountains and ocean!

      I live near St. Catherines, I had windmill palms as well. They got a fungus and died, but I had them a for few years.

    Each province has there own health care like OhIP. In Nova Scotia its called MSI. What each province covers may be slightly different but but all emergency services are definitely covered. And if you go to visit in another province after covid and need to go to hospital your OhIP will cover you there. I think its because each province is in charge of taking care of medical and they use your taxes you pay in that province to help pay for them. Plus the feds give so much money to each province by population to cover it as well. Although most jobs do pay every two weeks you can find some employers who may pay weekly or bi monthly which is on the 15 and 30th of the month or even monthly but they are not as common as the bi weekly.

      Ooo wow that is so good that if you visit another province your Ohip works! That’s amazing ! Thankyou for all the information :)

    Glad you are learning so much about this country and sharing it with all of us. Each province in Canada has basically the same health care coverage paid by our taxes. If you move from one province to another you are covered for 3 months before you have to switch over to that province. Same for driver's license. Southern Ontario has very hot humid summers because of the Great Lakes. Western Canada and the North have drier but colder climates in winter, but can also be quite hot in summer. Atlantic Canada -- Nova Scotia where I live -- is milder and wetter but can also be cold in winter. This year has been very mild with little snow but we do get storms and hurricanes. Taxes are not added to everything because certain categories of goods are exempt. In NS, we have HST which is 15%. We have a huge country so there are lots of variations from one province to another and even within each province. Hope all goes well with your PR process

    [Everyone please disregard this post. As correctly stated below, it is a load of bollocks. My apologies.]
    -Hi! Two things: If you're just visiting Canada you should keep your receipts, because you can claim back all the federal GST tax you paid, upon leaving Canada. Also, you can get a (low-cost) International Driving Permit while you're still in England, and it will be valid in Canada (or most other countries), for one year.-

    • @brentwoodbay
      @brentwoodbay 3 роки тому

      Those are both a load of bollocks! GST refund for visitors has been cancelled since 2007, EXCEPT 50% paid for tours only. You don't need an IDP for Canada unless your license is not in English! (or French!)

    • @Glenner7
      @Glenner7 3 роки тому

      Sorry about the GST thing; didn't know it was cancelled. I didn't say you needed an IDP for Canada, just that it was good for a year (rather than the three months with a British permit). No need to be so rude.

    • @brentwoodbay
      @brentwoodbay 3 роки тому

      @@Glenner7 I wasn't being rude, just being British! You might want to check on that IDP covering you for a year, as it is merely a translation of your DL , which after 60 or 90 days, depending on the province, is no long valid after moving here. I suppose you could say, if you were pulled over, that you were only visiting here and hadn't actually moved here, but that sounds a bit risky. ?

      @Glenner7 3 роки тому +1

    There is some federal oversight. But healthcare is provincial. However, if you are in another province, your home provinces healthcare will pay the province that cares for you.

  • @lucygoosie7726
    @lucygoosie7726 3 роки тому

    All provinces have to pay GST (5% taxes) but not every province has to pay provincial tax. And, as far as I know, food essential items don’t get taxed anywhere (junk food and prepared food does though).

  • @ralphvelthuis2359
    @ralphvelthuis2359 3 роки тому +1

    In Alberta there is no provincial sales tax, so we only pay the federal gst. Food products have no gst, but almost everything else does. Also, some groups like first nations and some religious organizations will have a tax exemption.
    We can experience anywhere from -45 to 50 in the winter to almost 40 above in the summer. Since its the prairies, its a dry heat. In winter, because of our closeness to the rocky mountains, we experience chinooks, which can raise our temperatures to plus degrees in the middle of winter from anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.
    You have 3 months to change over your license from another province, or another country. An international driving license is good for about a year.
    Most provinces, you will get paid bi-weekly.
    All Canadians or landed immigrants are covered by their provincial health services. We used to have to pay a tax of $100 every 3 months in Alberta that supposedly went to help pay for healthcare, but that was dropped about 20 years ago after government admitted it just went into general revenue. Some provinces provide more than others in their health plans but all must provide at least what health Canada sets out in their guidelines. If you move to another province, you are covered for 3 months under your old province's health care plan. Traveling in Canada, you are covered everywhere under your provincial plan.

    Great video as always. What I found when I was in Vancouver was that even though it was -1 at the time, it was a drier cold. The air is very wet in the U.K... but the higher altitude there made it feel fresher and I didn’t feel as cold as I do here walking around.
    What I find interesting (because I’m fascinated by weather) is when I googled the wind speeds (comparing Anglesey to Vancouver) we have winds almost every other day and quite strong gusts and storms. Over there there is hardly any wind (although they say they do get windy days) I don’t think it’s half as bad as the U.K.! I mean the winter here means storms and strong winds / lots of rain and flooding.
    Would be interesting to hear about how you have found the wind there? Compared to the U.K.?
    Also the pay works out the same because when you get paid monthly... you’ll get MORE money, rather than two lots of smaller payments. Personally I prefer the monthly pay because that’s how I budget 👍🏼
    Great video!

    Sales Tax: Taxes aren’t included in the displayed price because there are groups (the most often encountered are First Nations Peoples) that are not subject to sales tax. It’s a hold over from the old non-computerized checkouts - just hit a button and no tax will be added to the transaction.
    The Weather: The lakes add a lot of humidity to the air, even in winter. Damp cold feels worse than the actual temperature indicates.
    Changing license: Because Ontario has graduated licenses for new drivers it may happen that new(er) drivers coming from overseas may not be able to switch over their license as easily as you.
    It’s up the employer how frequently you are paid (within provincial guidelines). Less frequent pay periods generate cheaper payroll expenses. I once was managing payroll for a company who switched from biweekly to weekly pay and the improvement in morale was worth more than the increased cost. Personally, I prefer biweekly because you can budget for 2 pays a month, but twice a year there are 3 pay months (and it’s a great way to slip in superfluous gifts/trips without having to think about budgeting them)
    The Federal Government sets minimum standards of coverage and individual Provinces decide how best to supply that to their citizens. For instance, in Ontario OHIP sent a monthly bill to residents and all medical services were billed though it. About 30 years ago the Provincial Government made employers responsible for a fraction of the premiums. Over the following decade the employers had to adopt a greater percentage. Obviously now, employers pay 100% (in Ontario).

    For getting paid, it all depends on where your working it is either weekly or bi-weekly. I have had it bothe ways, as for tax it you tax everything separately then you would be paying more in tax. When you go and pay for your groceries, or snacks it is taxed on the total not the individual items. Licenses are across Canada it is within 3 months or 90 days.

    I know the taxes are confusing. I still get confused.
    Basically thou food is not taxable.
    Unless it’s considered a luxury item.
    So chocolate is taxable and milk is not.
    Then there’s the G.S,T. Goods and Service Tax which is applied to any goods or services.
    Which is either 7/8% of the total
    Regular sales tax being the remainder.
    O.H.I.P. Is Ontario Hospital Insurance Plan.
    Health care in Canada is provincially funded with the exceptional Trillium.
    That’s a different program that I suggest anyone coming into Canada look into.
    Bit complicated to explain here thou.

    Maybe next summer water parks will be open.
    Can hope and dream I guess.
