What Happened To '90s R&B Group Perfect Gentlemen?

- In the 80’s, boy bands, New Edition and New Kids on The Block had one man to thank for bringing them to the masses, Maurice Starr. A singer and songwriter in his own right, he was a member of a couple of vocal groups beginning in his childhood. Unfortunately, they weren’t successful so, he eventually decided to focus on song writing and producing for other artists. In 1988, Maurice went back to the drawing board to create another teen boy band that would hopefully follow in New Edition and New Kids on the Block’s footsteps. Enter Perfect Gentlemen.

Finally an update where no one got strung out. I was in love with Tyrone and was able to see them in concert.
I loved Tyrone too!!! I'm glad you were able to see them in concert!!!
Looks like two members of Perfect Gentlemen group are we’re kids of Maurice Starr, who arranged RnB group New Edition in early ‘80s production contract deal with Streetwise Records, charged them for every expense and then with insulting disappointment💔 , paid each of NE group member with a $1.87 check when tour concluded in 1984, having a luxury motor coach bus dropped them off back home in their Boston’s inner city neighborhood at Orchard Park housing projects, this is after a hellava debut ‘83 Candy Girl album & tour to promote… Well 40 years later look at NE, as old saying goes “when given lemonds 🍋 then make lemonade” still respectably standing after highs 🔥✨💥 and lows⛈ some many turbulent storms💨🌊🌪☔️ but they stayed the course of LIFE of good days and knowing bad days will come, but don’t last always !! One can only wonder why did Starr allow Perfect Gentlemen group fall into obscurity “disband” in early ‘90s with promising career.. maybe Starr knew industry focus for the future was boy bands and next big teen market craze was pop not RnB, hip hop, rap genres of music🤷🏼♀️ Now with RnB making a quiet come up… look 👀 at New Edition in 2017 a BET three night bio pic, awards, including a STAR 🌟 on Hollywood Boulevard, a 40th🎉 2023 Legacy 30 City Tour, just concluded April 30, 2023.. Now give NE what they want🪅no more long talks of Las Vegas Residency, Get it. .. finally getting their flowers 💐 and another accolade of honor, they are now
considered the blueprint for what would become the modern boy bands… OMG look at God !😍🙌🏽 ✝️🙏🏽
Tyrone was my huge crush❤❤
Never heard of this group, but they looked like they dropped fire songs 🔥
Me either 😭😂
Me either but still interesting. 😊
So you never heard the song Ooh Lala?
They were one hit wonder
@@crystalblake628 I used to love that song!
I thought they only existed in my mind! No one I know remembers them. Thank you!
Same! I remembered the group, but I honestly thought it was in my imagination.
Dang lol
I do!! 🙋🏽♀️🙋🏽♀️🙋🏽
I remembered them boiz! Do yall remember the group Special Generation🤔
Special Generation sounds both real and completely made up at the same time and I have no recollection of such a group ever existing.
Wow!! The update I didn't know I needed. I always wondered what happened to them. I played the heck out of Ooo Lala as a teen. I had the cassette single. Thanks for bringing back this memory. Give us more. Lol
I loved that song
Ooo lala was hard asf 👍
That shh was hard 4 real!💥 That shh was playing in my head a couple months ago🤣😁
I remember a girl at my school came down the hall rockin a Perfect Gentleman jacket.
I remember them
1990
I was 13
Shreveport, Louisiana
Maspike Miles is the TRUTH. What's crazy is I met dude like 4-5 times over my 20+ year career at various junctions and NEVER put together that he was in the group. But I guess that's because I only recall the original 3. He is VERY respected in the writing and networking scenes.
I love his work
Saw their episode of Showtime at the Apollo they rocked it
I was like 10 years old when they were out! Such nostalgia!!!
I remember them back then Maurice tried to create another New edition but couldn't, only he created great young men in a different way.
He actually did that, just did it wit some white Kids( NKOTB)
...This past Xmas, I went through a storage Box of CD's at my Mother's Home, to give to charity, & found the CD Single of "Oooh La La" from Perfect Gentlemen that I have not played in 31 YEARS, & thought, "...how are THEY doin'!?" ..and, I get THIS! ...well, let me help out, and give the Top Top Ten where they peaked at #10, June 1990...(cont.)
10. ***Oooh La La La (I Can't Get Over You)*** - Perfect Gentlemen
9. U Can't Touch This - MC Hammer
8. Sending All My Love - Linear
7. Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinead O' Connor
6. It Must Have Been Love (from, "Pretty Woman") - Roxette

1. Vogue - Madonna
I remember this group because I was so in love with New Kids on The Block. I had their album on cassette!
I look forward to seeing more about groups we never heard of but made a name for themselves in their state and home town. Nice
they were national lol
Omg I had their posters allll over my wall!!❤ 90s boy band groups were the Best!!
I had their poster on my wall and replayed their video on THE JUKEBOX VIDEO SHOW ❤️😂
Indeed. I was 12 living in Memphis when Ooh la la was in constant rotation on Video Jukebox. Sigh... the memories.
These were my guys back in the day still listen to their music
I was in the 4th grade and remember coming home to the Perfect Gentleman poster. I think I cried. I was sooooooooo happy.
I never heard of these guys in my life, thanks for uploading this.
YASSSS!! Ooh Lala was my JAM!! I freaking LOVED Perfect Gentlemen. The video was so cute! PG and The Boys were my Boos 😆 Nostalgia, gotta love it.
“I don’t wanna be in love” was another fire jam they made on that 93 album! Still be playing that joint today!
I use to love that song, Ooh la la!” I was 7 years old when this came out! I remember this was the song during summer 89 in North Philly sitting on the steps outside with my friends listening to Power 99fm. We use to sing this song! This group brings so much memories of my youth! At 41, I still play their music along with New Edition, The Boys, New Kids on the Block, and Another Bad Creation, and the Good Girls. I have my daughter, who’s 8 years old listen to these groups and let her know that I grew up listening to these groups. My daughter wants to sing, and I let her know how some of the singers who started singing young and how some still have longevity!
I looooove this song I would wait patiently for it on the 9 @ 9 countdown on Power 99! You can't tell me that My Friends and I weren't the second coming of En vouge. We used my front patio down in Southwest Philly as our stage. Thanks for the awesome Childhood Memory
@@Goldenladee82 Omg! I wish we can those days back! We don’t see kids listen to good music anymore or socialize on the block! Power. 99! Was everything next to Q102; WDAS back in the day!!!!
I remembered them. One of the members who got a famous dad, Marice Starr. I just wondered what happened. Thanks for the scoop.
I was just listening to them
Boston Stand Up ⬆️ Perfect Gentlemen Is From My Neck of The Woods! Peace ✌🏿 to Maurice Starr and Masspike Myles.
They came out when I was 13. I never knew that they made a 2nd album. Too bad that the album didn't perform the way it should have. Unfortunately they suffered the sophomore jinx. The good thing is, is that all are alive and well and into other things to keep them afloat. Everybody and their momma remembers the song "Ooh la la", that was a sure fire smash single. Another single that they had was the song "Rated PG". That song was another single that's attached to Ooh la la as a promotion 📼. That song was good as well. I wish them good health and the best of luck!
I was 14 in the 8th grade , nicca remember those Jr highschool dances😂😁
Perfect Gentlemen definitely deserves more credit
I discovered their second album a couple years back and I still play it regularly. It's too bad it was slept on! Should have been a smash.
"I Need You" is a bop! Should've been bigger than what it was. So unfortunate.
Let me into your heart is my favorite on that album
@@d77543020 How soon we forget - is a banger too
I remember this song but forgot the name of the group.Maurice Star tried to talk to me when I was 19 and he was like 45!
Ooh La La by Perfect Gentlemen was and still a great song
Ooh Lala and One More Chance aww...Tyrone was my first crush. I was about 5 then. Thanks for posting this. ♥️
I remember this group. 🙂
My childhood! Thanks 4 the memories! 🤗
I love these, they never get old and they shine light on people who put in work but their names aren’t mentioned as much as they should..some that I would love to see are
SFP(somethin for the people)
Blaque
Playa
Sunshine Anderson
Blu Cantrell
Special Generation(spark of love, love me just for me)
They reminded me of “The Boys” & ABC (Another Bad Creation)….
I REMEMBER THEM!!!
I loved "ooh la la" when it came out and saw them with New Kids on the Block back in the day (my 1st concert ever)! Thank you so much for this video!
I wish these were longer. I love these vids
Perfec glentemen 😪😪😪❤❤❤💖💖💖💖
Never heard of them thanks for the info
Maurice Starr had many other groups. Classic Example and Lady Soul were his best vocal groups.
Thank you for the update! Could you please do "Special Generation" next? Thanks again.
I loved them OMG!!
Next: What happened to Jane Child, who is popular in "Don't Wanna Fall In Love".
Teddy Riley's remix of that song was/is 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Me and my little best friends were on love with perfect Gentlemen pooh lalala was our joint.
Aww I still have my cassette ❤❤
My first crush was on Mauice star Jr. Watched video over and over again
everytime i turned on Jukebox ooh la la la would be coming on or going off lol, then Boom MIND PLAYING TRICKS ON ME would come on or Ice ice baby . man o man i miss those days
Indeed, along with Cool C's "Glamorous Life".
Beautiful video. It takes quite a bit of selflessness and courage to leave a position at an Ivy League institution because you realize you're needed more elsewhere.
I remember them ..just couldn’t remember their song 🎵
I definitely remember this Group. I was a Tween, when they first came out.
I listened to the entire Album (Cassette Tape🤫) over and over again.❤
Could be
They had that song ohh la la that was a hit
I remember them! I saw them on the Apollo. I wondered what happened to them.
This is the best UA-cam channel I swear
I loved this group!
Love these stories so much
I was waiting for this one for sure
Ooh La La was a hit in Tampa Fl in 1990
Also in Memphis TN.
💥 I loved them omg oohh lala oooh laa 💚oh now I have to go find the music 🥰
I remember them. Thank you for updating.
Yes ! New name alert !! That's a smart move !
Ill tell you this..there were so many great groups that some will get lost innthe fold, even if they had that 1 hit...this is 1 of em.
We need another album!!! 🙌💯
I never heard of them.
Masspike Miles deserves his flowers while he's still here
Those are my guys. Still keep up with Corey today.
I wondered what happened to them
I remember seeing their videos on The Box! TYSM for the update...much love to you and your channel.
Wow, I’ve never heard of them but I’m going to check them out.
Thank you so much for making this video! I listened to them earlier today and was wondering if you were gonna do a video on them! On their video "I Need You", a fellow r&b artist Chris Pittman was briefly in the group and he made an album.
I was stationed with Corey at Andrew's AFB
This is random but when did this channel change it's name? I almost unsubscribed when I got the notification for this video & I'm like "Who tf is Juicy Pop?" but that INTROOO SONG helped me remember❤🔥 loved their song Ooh La-La
She made an announcement saying she changed her name on the community tab.
This was one of the best updates ive seen if not the best. Just found your channel.
Welcome aboard!
Okay I remember that song. But never cared. Just like music that has been out in the past 10 years
Love these stories but they always seem to end so abruptly.
Miles is now a co radio host, Friday nights in Atlanta, on 99.7.
I remember them. They sung tat song ohh la la
Who else is old enough to remember Faze - cold sweat 🔥🔥🔥🔥/ Riff - if you're serious/4x4 lol. It was a lot of heat out back then that got forgot about.
What about The Voices - yeah yeah yeah back when lil BLK girls made clean music w/o showing they A.

@@foodieinvb6317 ok, look out now wit ya bad self 👍

I'm an 80s baby-Never heard of them. Never
Don't forget to call is fire
Neva Eva heard of 'em
These boys were talented. They should've had more hits
Ooh La la was the first song and MV that I liked and I had the cassette (searched n bought it few years later when I was 12/13, now 39), I was about 4 or 5 years old at that time, and as a born Muslim from Asian country, it is so wonderful and amazing to know that Tyrone Sutton/Imam Taymullah Abdurrahman as a figure that very close to my heart in the nostalgic sense finally become one of the brother in the Ummah and an 'aaliim/scholar/Imam nonetheless, so inspiring and heart warming, almost like a beautiful (personal) surprise..
Hope I can follow his footsteps and be more steadfast and better Muslim over time... may Allah protect him and his family, keep him steadfast in his faith and dawah, to always be a role model with full integrity within the community and his surroundings
The worth and dignity of a soul is measured by what it delights in! And delight/happiness is our highest desire.
Men have killed to have it. Kings have gone mad trying to find it. Wars have served it. Affairs have worshiped it. We all seek it.
Sadly, billions have died without discovering its secret... namely, that joy is not an it, but a He.
The Gospel is the good news that sinners can delight in a Holy God. It's the good news that all of our deepest desires are satisfied in the ONE who sent His Son to bring us to Him. .
God is so valuable and so satisfying that the most loving thing he could do for us is to make Himself gloriously indispensable. He is the only being in the universe for whom self-exaltation is the highest virtue.
Therefore, God's commitment to be glorified and our goal to be satisfied are not at odds but come to simultaneous consummation in the worship of His Son... who took upon Himself the Wrath that God had towards us in our sinful disregard of Him. A wrath that could never be appeased through man-made religion.
Jesus didn't die to turn the world into a paradise, he died so that we could stop seeking paradise in the world...
Temporal things such as beauty, popularity, money, sex, racial identity, gender reassignment... can never truly satisfy. BECAUSE WE WERE MADE FOR SO MUCH MORE!
We were made to gaze intently into the Eternal Beauty of a majestic King, Father, and God... meet Jesus the Christ.
Life is hard, God is good, Glory is coming

Quoting from somewhere on a forum answer: “Human is also described as made pure with natural good instinct (“fitrah”, Q30:30) and knowledge of Good and bad. Thus, human is born sinless (Adam was forgiven, Q2:37) and commit sin only by being influenced by Satan (Q7:27)”
Quote from “Islam, Judaism, and Christianity - A Conversation” from SMAADallas channel (from minute 57:44) :
“The Concept of salvation in Islam is that you do your best but your God is The Most Compassionate and The Most Merciful, and so long as He finds you on the day of judgment having tried your best to attain that mercy then His mercy will overcome your shortcomings.. that means that you will do your best, you will strive, but you will fall short because you were created in a way that you are meant to fall short, but it is ultimately the mercy and the redemption of God that will overwhelm you and enter you into paradise ”
Anas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Allah is more delighted at the repentance of His servant than one of you who lost his riding animal on a journey in a barren land while it carries his food and drink. He loses all hope as he comes to a tree to lie down in its shade, despairing over his animal, but suddenly he finds it standing over him. He takes hold of its reins and then he greatly rejoices, saying: O Allah, You are my servant and I am your Lord! He makes a mistake (in his utterance) due to his great joy.”

“He is Allah-One ˹and Indivisible˺; Allah-the Sustainer ˹needed by all˺. He has never had offspring, nor was He born. And there is none comparable to Him.” (Q.S 112)
Yes agree with you, the hereafter is the true goal :
____
"The enjoyment of ˹worldly˺ desires-women, children, treasures of gold and silver, fine horses, cattle, and fertile land-has been made appealing to people. These are the pleasures of this worldly life, but with Allah is the finest destination." (Q.S 3:14)
“This worldly life is no more than play and amusement. But the Hereafter is indeed the real life, if only they knew.” (Q.S 29:64)
“Know well that the life of this world is merely sport and diversion and adornment and an object of your boasting with one another, and a rivalry in the multiplication of riches and children. Its likeness is that of rain: when it produces vegetation it delights the tillers. But then it withers and you see it turn yellow, and then it crumbles away. In the Hereafter there is (either) grievous chastisement (or) forgiveness from Allah and (His) good pleasure. The life of this world is nothing but delusion.” (Q.S 57:20)
˹Allah will say to the righteous,˺ “O tranquil soul! Return to your Lord, well pleased ˹with Him˺ and well-pleasing ˹to Him. So join My servants, and enter My Paradise." (Q.S 89 : 27-30)
About God Oneness, His creations, and Jesus pbuh creation:
____
“Jesus declared, “I am truly a servant of Allah. He has destined me to be given the Scripture and to be a prophet. He has made me a blessing wherever I go, and bid me to establish prayer and give alms-tax as long as I live, and to be kind to my mother. He has not made me arrogant or defiant. Peace be upon me the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I will be raised back to life!” (Q.S 19 : 30-33)
“Verily, the likeness of ‘Iesa (Jesus) before Allah is the likeness of Adam. He created him from dust, then (He) said to him: “Be!” - and he was.” (Q.S 3:59)
“Mary submitted: 'O my Lord, how shall I have a son when no man has ever touched me?' He said: 'Just as Allah creates what He pleases.' When He decides (to do) some work, He just gives it the command 'Be', and it becomes.” (Q.S 3:47)
“He is the One Who has originated the heavens and the earth, and when He wills to (originate) a thing, He only says to it: 'Be', and it becomes.” (Q.S 2:117)
“Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “He is Allah-One ˹and Indivisible˺; Allah-the Sustainer ˹needed by all˺. He has never had offspring, nor was He born. And there is none comparable to Him.” (Q.S 112)
In the end:
____
"Say: "O People of the Book (Jews and Christians)! come to common terms as between us and you: That we worship none but Allah; that we associate no partners with him; that we erect not, from among ourselves, Lords and patrons other than Allah." If then they turn back, say ye: "Bear witness that we (at least) are Muslims (bowing/submitting to Allah's Will)." (Q.S 3 : 64)
“Let there be no compulsion in religion, for the truth stands out clearly from falsehood. So whoever renounces false gods and believes in Allah has certainly grasped the firmest, unfailing hand-hold. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing. (Q.S 2:256)
“For you is your religion, and for me is my religion.” (Q.S 109:6)

shae jones next please!!! i comment every year montell jordans protégé
Junior high 1990…..i remember ordering the Ooh La La video for 1.00 on that video request TV channel
For us in Memphis, it was Video Jukebox.
What happened to all R&B groups?
I used to be at Maurice Starr house in boston
Ooh La La was the bomb
I know Steven Starr, a nice guy we had dinner with my son before.
Have you ever did a video on voices? The group Tia and Tamera was in before they became famous
I still would like to know what happened to the r&b trio BLACKGIRL, Mc Smooth, Latin singer Veronica, B Angie B former singer of Mc Hammer, The Covergirls , Dino.
Always wondered what happened with them?
Maurice Starr...the light just got turned off.
Never heard of this group.
There was too much competition back then with the young men groups.
Tyrone❤️Still fine
Dang. I forgot about ooh la la
I was about to say what is this channel and I don't remember subscribing, but I see you changed your name.
Can you do one on what happened to the legendary 80's British soul band The Pasadenas? Whatever happened to them? Best known for the songs Tribute (Right On) and Riding on a Train.
I remember them performing on showtime at the Apollo
Thank God Tyrone found " Allah" because he knew that his life had to change for the better. The nation of Islam is good for the black man worldwide in my opinion. I am of the Christian faith and I found happiness and peace with the God of Isarel. Good for Tyrone he found peace and happiness.
