I really like Garnet design, the heterocromia of her eyes is so cute!! I’m not completely sold on Amethyst, think a more “Latino” look, with brown hair and her usual clothing would have fit her better. I have to admit that the choice of skin tone and style for Pearl are kinda off to me, I always seen her as more classy and elegant so not exactly the type for buggy clothes and well.. really pale. But it is a interesting concept.

lapis lazuli is known to be formed with bits and chunks of gold, lapis’s eyes and tongue and freckles are golden, her gem has little golden speckles,,, I LIKE THIS
This is human au. The author essentially colored them according to what race/ethnicity the show runners implied them to be (Garnet black, pearl Asian, and amethyst Hispanic?? I don’t remember.) As a Chinese girl, Pearl definitely feels Chinese to me. She’s got ballet, perfectionism, a piano for her background song, and sticks to the rules - not to mention an Asian voice actor. Unfortunately, I think that the artist just was just under the mark for all the color palettes for the characters. Garnet is harsh brown in a way that Garnet in the show isn’t (even when Steven dreamed Garnet to be human, her skin tone was pleasantly chosen, whereas this one is hard to look at.) Amethyst is perhaps too saturated a and dark a brown to feel Hispanic. The freckles are also hard to see due to this issue and her clothes aren’t saturated enough in comparison to her skin to and thus run together. And Pearl is a shade too dark and too saturated to feel Asian. Asian skin has variability and indeed can be dark shades or very light, so the artist has some choice here. But I think they did not use a good reference for dark Asian skin, as it’s not quite the same and doesn’t come across as Asian. The lack of shading or Asian features compounds this issue.
Ally Li Ally Li I must agree, I like the idea that they portray each race, but I do think they fall a little short on the color palettes. The character designs are nice themselves. As a Hispanic, I can confirm there are extremely dark and extremely light ranges of skin tones, but it just felt too black. Garnet being that dark is fine, but honestly, it’s just distracting. She’s hardly even brown, she’s literally black. And of course, those of Asian decent are famously in the paler side, so I’m not quite sure if they just didn’t pay mind to that fact or what? I understand artistic liberties, but it was honestly slightly distracting.

Three things. 1: the fact that you have to overly state you aren't racist for asking a question is absurd. You should be able to politely ask a question as you wish without fear of backlash. 2: I believe that The Gems are all of different ethnicity, as it has been hinted st loosely that Indeed, Garnet is coded Black, Amethyst is coded of hispanic ethnicity, and depending on geographic location, this would make sense, and if i recall correctly, pearl is coded of Asian ethnicity. So I can not answer for that part, but I would chalk it up to styleistic choice. 3: Don't ever again feel like you need to apologize for asking something. You meant no ill will and you know this, so the ravings of a very select few can be overlooked, because in your heart, you know what you meant, and that's all that matters. Your intentions were clear in your writing and it is hard to see it as otherwise.

Bro, why is Pearl’s skin so dark? I guess Garnet and Amethyst make sense, but Pearl, literally known for its whitenes?
This is human au. The author essentially colored them according to what race/ethnicity the show runners implied them to be (Garnet black, pearl Asian, and amethyst Hispanic?? I don’t remember.)
As a Chinese girl, Pearl definitely feels Chinese to me. She’s got ballet, perfectionism, a piano for her background song, and sticks to the rules - not to mention an Asian voice actor.
Unfortunately, I think that the artist just was just under the mark for all the color palettes for the characters.
Garnet is harsh brown in a way that Garnet in the show isn’t (even when Steven dreamed Garnet to be human, her skin tone was pleasantly chosen, whereas this one is hard to look at.)
Amethyst is perhaps too saturated a and dark a brown to feel Hispanic. The freckles are also hard to see due to this issue and her clothes aren’t saturated enough in comparison to her skin to and thus run together.
And Pearl is a shade too dark and too saturated to feel Asian. Asian skin has variability and indeed can be dark shades or very light, so the artist has some choice here. But I think they did not use a good reference for dark Asian skin, as it’s not quite the same and doesn’t come across as Asian. The lack of shading or Asian features compounds this issue.
Ally Li Ally Li I must agree, I like the idea that they portray each race, but I do think they fall a little short on the color palettes. The character designs are nice themselves.
As a Hispanic, I can confirm there are extremely dark and extremely light ranges of skin tones, but it just felt too black.
Garnet being that dark is fine, but honestly, it’s just distracting. She’s hardly even brown, she’s literally black.
And of course, those of Asian decent are famously in the paler side, so I’m not quite sure if they just didn’t pay mind to that fact or what? I understand artistic liberties, but it was honestly slightly distracting.

Vex Axel. Exactly! I mean if you make a black character white then you get in a lot of trouble but if you make a white character black it’s fine!
Three things.
1: the fact that you have to overly state you aren't racist for asking a question is absurd. You should be able to politely ask a question as you wish without fear of backlash.
2: I believe that The Gems are all of different ethnicity, as it has been hinted st loosely that Indeed, Garnet is coded Black, Amethyst is coded of hispanic ethnicity, and depending on geographic location, this would make sense, and if i recall correctly, pearl is coded of Asian ethnicity. So I can not answer for that part, but I would chalk it up to styleistic choice.
3: Don't ever again feel like you need to apologize for asking something. You meant no ill will and you know this, so the ravings of a very select few can be overlooked, because in your heart, you know what you meant, and that's all that matters. Your intentions were clear in your writing and it is hard to see it as otherwise.
