The Liberty Bell on D/G melodeon

  • Melnet Tune of the month September 2010 - The Liberty Bell by John Philip Sousa.
Played by Anahata on an Oakwood D/G melodeon with standard accidentals.
The third section should go into C if the tune started in G, but that's almost impossible to play on a D/G melodoen. Many melodeon players stay in G, but I found using D instead of C means you still get a key change, and it's quite playable.
Also I deciphered the tricky 8 bar bridge passage leading to the final repeat; it's nothing like Sousa's original and I have done a thoroughly dirty and evil job of mangling it to fit the limitations of the instrument.
This is still very scrappy with a lot of missed notes. I know what I'm supposed to be doing, my fingers just haven't quite caught up yet, but it shows the general idea of what I meant to do. Call it work in progress if you like.

I love how melodeons can play such a diverse amount of music and what you _can_ play more often than not sounds like it was written for it.

I've never heard a melodeon impersonating a barrel organ before, this is fabulous! Well done, as usual.

Thanks for an amazing piece of work. I love it and have been enjoying the challenge :0 of learning it (at least trying to) on English concertina. I realised on the English of course I should be able to learn the bits in their original keys and went to listen to that, but… I like yours better! Just about getting it (snail version) and all good until I had to figure out the chords for the band… eugh to that! Thanks for your tunes generally. You’re an inspiration.

It certainly looks like a bit of a fight :o)
Thanks for your reply. I see what you mean about staying in the same key, I'd not thought of that one.... not sure I'll be able to play that bridge in C. I'll have to have a look. I also noticed, as you say, that the transpoition would probably be what is needed rather than a straight top line transpoition. Thanks for the advice. Keep posting :o)

Really inspiring playing. I love what you do on the basses though it all flies by so quickly I'm not sure what is happening. I think I need to try and slow the video down to figure it out. I so want to play this tune in the magnificent style you have demonstrated. I detect some late night sessions coming on!

I do stay in D for that bridge - it wouldn't make sense to change key, especially as it is followed by the same music as preceded it, also in D.
I think I also worked from original sheet music in B flat. To work out the chord changes in that bridge, I had to transpose it on paper, and then look at which notes I could play, or rather which were the most important notes to play and what I could leave out.
And thank you - This has to be one of the hardest things I've ever tried to play!
    Anahata

Hi. Love the job you have done here. I was wondering if you could give me some advice. I play on a D whistle and do third section in C and am trying to decide how to go about that 8 bar bridge passage. It sounds to me as you stay in D for it. I might have to drop to G. I only have dots in Bb, I don't fancy trying to work something out by ear for that bit. Any advice before I get stuck into the job would be nice. Thanks in advance and thanks for posting what you do, love it.
