Star Trek provided him a means to be a starship captain and push the limits of his acting. And in gratitude he called Riverside, Iowa home from then on.

I was at the empress hotel in victory can. in the 80's we were on the same floor. I ended up going down the elevator with him. I said hi he said hi and shook hands. Wanted his autograph but didn't ask. I think he appreciated that as when we came down every buddy hit him up. We nodded at each other the next few days. Glad he strong at 93.
