Building an LS Swapped Jeep Cherokee XJ: New Project Overview
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 лип 2024
- I've been contracted to build an LS swapped jeep cherokee XJ for a customer who drove all the way from Texas with his Jeep Cherokee for me to install the new engine. Its a 1998 Cherokee Sport XJ 2 door, which is one of my favorite styles of jeep of all time. LS swaps are all the rage lately, and this is one I havent tried myself, so I was all on board to get started. Its gonna have an LQ4 6.0 truck engine with an LS6 car intake, a cam upgrade, and a whole host of other LS swap parts which should make this installation a breeze. This will be part of a series on the LS swap in an XJ cherokee, and this video covers all the parts you'll need to successfully LS Swap your jeep, including the mounts, headers, exhaust, wiring, cooling system, transmission, and more.

its so cool to be working on a proper off road build! this thing is amazing, and cant wait to get it running with the 6.0
Be cool at the end to do a cost breakdown of all the parts and everything you had to do. For people that are thinking about LS swapping
@@jestinmorse8248 I'm going to be about 10 grand in when I'm done. That does include rebuilding the trans, and engine with some goodies in it.
@@poorwboy that’s awesome. Less than any side by side and will have a better time! Thanks for the reply
@@jestinmorse8248 It should be a blast, I originally built a stroker and it was ok. But then I put 1 tons, and 40 inch tires, and it was not ok anymore. Lol. We estimate the Lq4 should be around 500 to 550 hp, so that should be better than ok, I hope. I will say there is a bunch a nickle and dime stuff that you don't think about before the build.
How do like that forney welder? I just ordered mine.
Wait, someone is going to do a good job documenting an XJ LS swap? I think I need to sit down for a second..
every step of the way
“Should be a fairly simple conversion” famous last words usually said at the start of a project....:-)
Yeah I said that when I started gen v swapping my gmt800 Sierra 🤦🏻♂️
It only turns I to an issue when you dont know what youre doing 🤣🤣
Lmao I said that back in 2017 when I started my project and yeahhh no 😂😂
One day turns into 3 weeks 🤣🤦♂️
For those of you new to the 'LS' World: its the Gen 3 and 4 Chevy Small block, replaced the 350cid from the earlier years. LT already gave us the basics the LR4 (4.8) LM7 (5.3) and LQ4/LQ9 (6.0), TRUE LS engines are aluminum, the LS1/LS6 (5.7) LS2 (6.0) and Believe it or not a fwd based LS4. Theres also a big bore LS7 but thats basically the archangel Michael in engine form. After that then the engine codes get crazy: L59, LM4, L33, LS3 ( camaro 6.2), L99, LSA ( supercharged :3) L94, L76, L77, L96, L98, L20, LH6, LY5, LMG, LC9, LH8, L92, L9H, LY6 (gen 4 iron 6.0 RIchard holdners favorite) , LFA ( not the toyota), LZ1, LS9 AND THEN you get to the aftermarket LSX blocks, like the LSX376 and LSX454 after that chevy went to the 5th Gen Block "LT" which do not share bits from the earlier years.
How do you figure out which our compatible with your car?
It took me a bit to switch over. I was watching you and Austin on a 2 hour compilation of project low n slow. Lol.
I have had my ls swapped 2000 done for a year and a half now and it still makes me smile everytime I drive it.
You are the man L.T!! I've been getting ready to start my XJ LS swap for a year and finally someone legit is doing a build we can follow along with. I always enjoyed watchin you on Trucks. Keep it up man, look forward to watchin this series over and over.
Have you figured out a ballpark cost? I’m sure it’s in a video, lol. But I just need to know the cost comparison to a crate 4.0
It was good seeing yesterday and can't wait for more on this project and the others.
Can't wait to see this. I've been think of the same swap in my 97 xj
Lt, love this video. Thanka for the update for your job to do conversion project! Looking forward to the series!!
Your content just gets better and better LT!
The LS V-8 also weighs less than the Jeep inline 6. More power, less weight - what's not to love?
And engine longevity to match the legendary 4.0
With a proper transmission it’s not less weight then a 4.0
It brings weight back from in front of the front axle as well.
Very excited for this build. Love your channel, keep up the good work!
LT, Looking forward to seeing this project.
Thats amazing LT! Glad word is out on your new business. Looking forward to this project.
You and me both!
Great project, great content. Anxious to see the results!
You have my attention. I am planning this in the future. I will be following this video series.
Right on! Hope you get your big shop.
Very excited to see a clear, well documented ls swap in an XJ. Good luck!
Thanks!
I have a coworker that has a Comanche pickup that we put a 360 Mopar crate engine in. It's done right, using all Mopar parts, except the radiator, including power steering and A/C. Looks like it was made for it.
Awesome, Looking forward to the new progress videos
Excited for this one! Show us as much as you can!
A 4bt Cummins would be awesome in one of those
Very cool but also a incredibly heavy engine. Dry, undressed weight is up in the 700 lb range. A lot of frame reinforcement is needed for a swap like that. It’s not quite as cool but a 1.9 tdi swap is always a good diesel option.
I have the same welding cart, I like it alot, with the exception of the storage box. I added a pull handle to it so you can actually get it out.
I wanted to LS swap my H3 so bad. Really wanted a LBZ in it. But was WAY outta my budget. But so was a LS. But letting my son total it in 6 weeks was probably cheaper then both swaps together. This Jeep will be awesome
Cool project! On the transmission if it is a rock crawler it's ok to go overkill big on the cooler. A lot of heat builds up with no high speed driving air flow maybe an extra fan on the trans cooler will help out a lot. Can't wait to see the progress.
The words "Monster" and "4l60" in the same sentence just means that the transmission will be pulled back out within 500 miles
I have LT1 350 with 4L60E in my cherokee its been holding good in there for almost 4 years after the rebuild. I haul all my firewood home with it too from all over the mountains. you have to manually shift out of overdrive and into 3rd to tow with it
@@jacobadam4556 Stock for stock a 6.0 makes a lot more power then a Lt1 though
@@waterloo123100 are you holding it floored everywhere you go?
@@jacobadam4556 You don’t need to have it floored to break a 4l60e. That 6.0 makes enough torque you could get it stuck once and you’ll snap the reverse shell. Plus I think this guy is also referring to the fact that Monster transmissions are Junk.
Love the new radiator and fans
That jeep is going to be fun !
I've wanted to do this swap for years!!
Great video , Like always !
This is going to be awesome!!
LQ4 is a stout engine. Mine on a stock cali legal ecu dyno'd at 287 whp and 336 ft-lbs , so the numbers arent far off from crank horse rating. and all i got is a 91 shyt cali gas tune and a flowmaster exhaust. so that will do great on the jeep. its geared for that sweet torque
Can’t wait to see the progress of this build. I’m thinking of doing the same for my XJ. Can you list the exact parts that were used from LS Simple to make up the accessory brackets? I visited their website, but was confused on which parts are suitable for an XJ build.
Looking forward to this
Cool thing about this upgrade is it will probably get better gas mileage for sure won’t change. Those in line 6s are cool engines, my 91 YJ max torque and hp was around 2k rpm. Like a gas powered diesel. Had a mind splitting 120 hp and torque. Not much worse than a 85 Chevy 305 truck engine 😀
Can’t wait to see it.
Damn that thing is a machine how it sits 🙌
Hey LT, if you get to wanting some tables for parts and assembly they foldable party tables they sell at either ACE or Tractor Supply are usually around 30 bucks, sturdy enough, and foldable when not needed so you can get them out of the way. Hope that is a helpful resource for temporary work surfaces!.
I am looking forward to this!
The LQ4 is a lovely motor. Heavy, though - before it's too late, see if you can talk him into an aluminum 5.3 stroked to 383 inches!
The 6.0L weighs about 125# less than the 4.0l 6 so I win all the way around, twice the HP less weight!
I just supercharged my jeep and I really wished I could have swapped in an LS. I'll be paying close attention to how you make it happen.
Overall do you like the supercharger? I'm considering it because it's so much easier than an LS swap. So just curious if you like it
What a unit....
Finally!! Great video. Pumped....
thanks!
This channel is gonna go far, goonsquad best watch out😉
dang, thats a high bar so set... bring it on!
I'm in the middle of collecting parts for my 6.0 ls swap in my 2000 xj!
I'd love an LS in my 2000 Chevy S10. Maybe one day. Love the channel!
Do it! I put an LS1 in my 1995 S10 and it’s so fun!!
I was just talking about the terminator x max last night. Can it control a sniper setup or only a multiport setup? I would have rather used a single standalone controller for my trans and engine rather than 2 separate ones that can't communicate.
I'm putting an LT1 L83 in my 37 Chev PU. doing the frame work now. MII from Fatman and leafs from TCI. The engine is rated at 350 HP. That's gonna be a handful in the 37. It's not that heavy, even with boxing the frame. Original specs had it at 3800 lbs. but that was with the Stovebolt six which must weigh 600 lbs. The L83 is half that.
be a nice build cant wait ....
That monster transmission is absolutely trash. Just like the company lol
Wow. Lots of parts lots of work to go. Clint wait.
Can’t wait for you to get your own shop. It might be cool if you had your own TV show 😂
Maybe one day!
Very nice build. I have the same build going on right now, but a 4 door. Building coilover towers for it now, then the Lq4 will be going in.
never really worked on one of these, but they are a lot of fun!
@@LawrenceTolman You will have fun, big block in a wheelbarrow.
Looking forward to this build😁You might want to upgrade that transfer case with a 6 pinion planetary and 1.25 in.wide chain if it isn't already...
I know that the transfer case needs to be upgraded, it will be the fusible link for a little while until I can do a proper upgrade and overhaul.
The 231 is pretty strong, for what is is,but I'm afraid you will be pushing it's limits.....
Well. You got clos to what I asked for. I wanted to see one swapped into a wj. They look like something that would have an ls
Wonder if the uni-frame will have any issues with that much torque?
This is great! I have been on the fence for this swap for years. I really wanted to use a gen V/L83 just because they are so cheap now but there are no swap kits out there. I like the novak stuff but the headers are made by sanderson and are just repackaged from Novak....I wish someone could read me the part numbers off of those headers! 4L60Es make me nervous but I agree with the gearing for this project. Any more info on the accessory relocation kit from LS simple? Hopefully it is cheaper than the Holley kit! I am anxious to see if how much of the jeep harness will be left after the Terminator is installed. The factory jeep fuel pump with the old tried and true Corvette regulator combo seems to be the hot ticket with this project.I am going to be following this one close!
I've always thought of the idea of the "anti jeep" a lowered street machine cherokee with a turbo 4.0 or ls swap would be cool as hell, would tee off a lot of people too haha
I would be down for that
A few people have done that. I know there is a white drag car, and a green autocross build. There was also a few Lemons builds.
There are whole facebook groups dedicated for that!
There's a blue XJ on here somewhere with 400h/500t coming from the "factory" (stroked) 4.0 via a lot of boost. I think it runs 9's!?
Ill try to find it...

I had a 97 XJ 4.0L 5 speed 2 door 2WD. Weighed under 2900 lbs, and was a hoot to drive. Later in its life, I realized it wasn't going to be going off road as much, so I swapped the tires down to 235/60R15. Dropped it 7/8" with no altering of suspension. Even that made it handle much nicer. The leaf springs and solid axles front and rear weren't ideal for handling, but the absurdly low weight and nice torque covered a multitude of sins.
I want to see the final cost of everything. I’d love to have my XJ LS swapped but I know it’s a pipe dream
hey lt i like when you with truck tech you still with them i like that show
No, I finished my last season back in September
Is there any difference between the 84-86 and 87-newer as far as floor pan/firewall
Had the 4 door version. Hate that I let it go!
That engine is going to fit in that engine bay like Isotoners on O.J.😂
what are engine upgrades can i do on my 2001 jeep grand cherokee that would actually make sense so i can get more power?
the v8 from a lexus ls 400 from i think 95-97 swaps right onto the original auto tranny but with the lexus trans pump , because the output shaft is slightly different, and you can keep the original gauges
I am swetaing the electronic stuff. Everything else I am good with.
How will all the accessories work with this swap harness? Is it fairly staight forward? How much was your new harness.?
Someone did a lot of home work with this kit!
Is there a list of every part that he has to convert it, even parts in later videos? Im kinda slow and i have an lq9 that I want to put in my xj
you could add to the series an itemization of cost down to the nuts and bolts so we all know the whole deal, also at 37" tires he's already under geared with 4:56s, he should be running at the very least 4:88s or 5:13s. on a XJ, the general rule of thumb is 4:56s for 33" tires. he should have just used the AW4 jeep trans, theyre basically bullet proof and easily handle 4-500hp
What muffler we thinkin about? Will it be a single system or duals throughout? This should be a sweet swap edit:. Maybe I should watch the whole thing first
What terminator x kit from holly did ucuse exactly...I have same engine from 03 2500 chevy n a 4l80 im installing in my 2000 xj
Hi LT, I know there are so many variables, but what was roughly your (labor only) charged for this complete project?
All HAIL the Tall people, except when buying clothes, Lurch arms and something to cover the plumbers crack is always welcomed.
love the show.
I’m late to the show but am wondering if this conversion is 50 state emissions compliant?
I don't know what part of Texas he's in but I'll be surprised if that electric fan setup will cool the engine in S.E. Texas during the summer. That flex plate looks about as flimsy as the 4.0L flex plate. The 4.0 will brake out the center of the flexplate easily there isn't a heavy duty option for the LS?
Damn looking at a solid $10,000+ in parts alone. I’m sure I’m way off on that estimate.
Id be very happy with 50 extra WHP on my Cherokee with the 5-speed. Would love to do a budget LS conversion or maybe supercharge.
Would've went with a 4l80e the 60s never seem to hold up.
If you put the right components in a 4l60 it will handle 400hp. It’s the stock units that don’t hold up very well.
Hopefully see more
Those tires are way overpressured with a 5" contact patch.
Do the circle track test.
White shoe polish across the tread,( outside to outside)
Lower pressure till the outside white disappears. Thats the pressure for your combo.
One more plus for the 4L60 on a mild build is that it takes less power to spin than a 4L80
What wheels are those? They fit the vibe of a v8 perfectly already
I’ve been thinking about doing this how much horsepower do you get to the wheels?
My 03 Denali has the 6.0 lq4 and has the 4l65E trans. Stock.
Another you tuber did this conversion on a commanche same as a xj in the front and it was not a easy task a d still has issues with overheating to this day
hmm... thats not a good sign. something to watch out for I guess
I'm doing the same build and need to know what transmission motor mount I need to get what is the part number
what year 4L60 are you using and is there a difference between a 4L60 and a 4L60E?
Well I can always go for a ls swap video 😂
Do you have the complete list of parts and links somewhere ?
Now you're speaking my language!
This jeep was actually started in Ohio. Jcr armor frame stuffiners and had a twin turbo set up a few years back but was sold b4 ever completed
How long do you think this project will take?!
Do they make a adaptor to the Aw-4 or Ax-15? I've been pondering this swap for a while. I cant put a Chevy unit in my Jeep....gotta keep the bullet proof 4.0. But if I do swap a v8 its gonna be Mopar.
I'm not very familiar with all the Jeep conversion stuff to be honest
I know you did this quite a while ago but did you use factory gauges?
some Carven exhaust would be nice on that thing
I want to do this so bad to mine, same color and everything.
Good morning. What are you planning to do for the crossmember mount for 4l60e? Are you using the jeep transfer case? Or gm transfer case? Theres not alot of info on adapting the transmission to crossmember.
we're using the Jeep NP231 adapted to the 4l60 (which Im making a video on right not) and the customer supplied an Advance Adapters mount to support the back of the transmission, which I will have to adapt to the Rustys Off Road crossmember. All will be detailed in upcoming videos
Nice!! Looks fun... :-)
Ls the world!!
Can you say what your charging to do the swap?
What did you use for the wiring
