Even when it's way over my head, it is so wonderful to watch someone who knows their job, and loves doing it. Those transmission techs are masters of their craft.
Yep, its just those 2 guys in there doing everything. Jon is the owner and hes always making improvements. He really knows his stuff. Im kind of a nerd gor mechanical engineering and talking to him really put into perspective the difference between reading and learning something and someone who is trained and improving something.
Great paragraph at the end - for all the ambitious videographers out there or even just those who think shooting video is a breeze, that statement is 100% true. Thank you for all you guys do, always super excellent quality work and creativity. Much love from MN :)
Not to mention prohibitively expensive for those not under sponsorship and revenue streams provided from youtube videos. How much was that transmission? 💸💸💸💰
To offer some advice: I work in oils testing and fittings using yellow metals (brass, bronze, copper, etc.) are generally off limits, as those metals are catalysts for oil oxidation. Maybe consider replacing those with stainless fittings when you can.
How about for sensors? I know AEM gauges tend to supply brass oil pressure and temperature sensors rather than stainless (while trading off accuracy vs cost)
I went down this route, using hydraulic brass and metal fittings. They're heavy, bulky and ugly and nowhere near as good as the legit alum speedlow style ones. Buy once, cry once in this department imo.
This is probably my favorite video you guys have ever released. I LOVE weird, extremely specific usecase mods like this, especially when they're explained by someone who loves their car and loves working on it. This felt like I was in my own garage adding some dumb mods that only I would care about and see the benefit of. Super wholesome lol
I swear, you guys set the bar for automotive video content quality. Trust me, all your work and effort (whether it's behind the camera, computer or wrench) does not go unnoticed. Great stuff!!!
Wow. I can't believe I havnt heard of this channel yet. I've been a DSM enthusiast for over a decade and seeing some behind the scene TRE clips from John was an absolute treat ! I was so glued in. What a legend. Both of you!
Lanaaaa!!! I certainly understand the balance of wanting to do a job as best you can yourself while still filming. The time crunch of needing a car to be drive-able only makes it worse. I'm glad you have people to help out and you were able to get it done on your own! This is also why i'm typically not comfortable creating a "how-to" style video on something if its my first time ever doing that job. My evo trans/clutch install video was probably the 4th or 5th time I had done the job before finally filming and editing it all together. ❤
The cinematics, the editing, the music (reminds me of gran turismo vibes), the knowledge, the perseverance, the cars and people in front and behind the camera are just spectacular. What an episode.
I admire the passion you have for what you do! Putting so much time and effort into a build and see it all come together is surely one of the best feelings in the world
There is something to be said about any video that the makers and people featured in said video are passionate about what they do. Thanks for bringing great entertainment to us and helping me scratch my itch now that I am no longer wrenching on any projects for the next 10 years or so. Car has come a long way and is looking fantastic
16 years with my 6 speed having bought my brand new IX MR in 2006. Car makes about 320whp and is mostly a daily driver so she's never seen much track use. But I can tell you since day one people have been telling me I made a mistake, that I'm on borrowed time 18:00 , and that I should swap it out. I want to thank ShepTrans for telling me to relax and enjoy my car. They could have easily sold me an expensive transmission (either 5 or upgraded 6), but instead they talked with me and helped me love my car again. Just posting this because people like the dude at the shop who says "I think we warned you" just brought on a little ptsd 😂but I get he wants to defend his shop's work.
I think you missed the point of what they told you. They said that as long as you are making stock numbers, the 6MT will last a long time. Once you start making significant power upgrades, the 6MT will take a fat steamy 💩 all over your dreams! Even with the stock Turbo, a few bolt-ons and a walbro 255 you can make 390/370 which is right at that point of playing "Any day now" with the 6MT. They have the most problems with the synchros and 3-4 shifting.
Your evo is alot like the HKS evo that set the lap record at tsukuba, it even has the same wheels... and thats just awesome, i hope it becomes just as much of a legend in time attack as the one built by HKS
Watching and listening to the transmission experts is a pleasure everytime ! Beautyful craftmanship and a well spoken man make for a very enjoyable watch
I loved the Team Rip sequence with the jazz; what they do really is bring chaos into harmony like jazz does; plus cars with jazz always gives that gran turismo vibe; you can tell you guys really love working with them and hey they gave you a holy grail EVO trans so its mutual
I love these transmission segments. The absolute depth of knowledge that the guys at the trans shop have really comes through. Thank you Ben, for having so many transmission woes 😂
Just wanted to say that I really have enjoyed these more technical Civic and Evo episodes that you've released in the recent past. Thanks for the quality content and entertainment!
So now you have one straight-cut gear? That'll be an interesting chorus. If thermal capacity was really one of the issues with the transmission, wouldn't that justify a transmission fluid cooler?
Thank you guys so much for putting out content like this. Its honestly just great coming home from work seeing all of the magic happen. From the bottom of my heart, Thank you for all that you guys do.
Hey Ben, first off Great work tearing down the evo yourself, just a quick tip, the silicone on the oil pan, when you apply a bead, they go on the sump side of the bolt holes( inner side ). This is to prevent oil from leaking out of where the bolts go for the pan
Very cool to see these two cars from from one iteration to the next. The expert at the Team Rip was a real gear head (here most nights, do marriages, birthdays, bar mitzvahs.......).
Yesssss plazmaman!!! I run it on my Evo and it not only looks awesome but does the job extremely well. Awesome group that works there too. Super helpful and quality is unbeatable. Heaps of big power cars in Australia run their coolers cause they just work so well.
Those of us who know what it takes to harvest what we put our time, energy and heart into, know the pain it takes to reap the benefits. Yall keep doing what your doing, I'm inspired after every video.
It's funny because he is talking about which gear is the holy grail of gears, but really he is the holy grail of gearbox builders. It'll be a very sad day when he retires, unless he manages to pass on all his knowledge to his apprentice.
One of the best Car/Racing Vlog hands down the quality and content is amazing. Also the fact the function is a priority. Love Gears and Gasoline !!!!!!
Videos like this is what makes me want to keep wrenching and working on cars. Not sure how this will work with evs. But ice is here to stay even if a ton of labor results in minor gains... very therapeutic.
I've done that trans removal more time than I can remember... or want to remember. I always just pull the whole motor and trans together. Try as I might I never could get the transmission back IN the car without popping the TOB clip thing on the input shift. It's so much easier on the ground.
This was such a phenomenally enjoyable video to watch! You guys always knock it out of the park and I wish you tons of luck in the next time attack event !!
See you guys replaced the front lip and painted the brake calipers red. 🙌🏿🙌🏿 plus I'm learning a lot here, not yet a racer but looking forward to. Amount of knowledge I'm getting here makes absolute sense relative to each upgrade you do.
I genuinely love this channel so much. I'm fully interested in both time attack cars at this point. Lin's evo is wicked cool and pretty much has set a standard if for evo's. Love you guys
I think the whole section with the transmission being built was cool, especially the lathe part and machining. good work yall! trying to catch up on videos, and I admire all the hardwork! =)
I love G&G videos. It always feels like watching a short movie instead of a long UA-cam video lol Keep up the great work guys! I don't own any of the cars you show on the videos. UT I can't seem to skip any of them either Haha
I get the feeling the comp test was cold engine. Should be done as close to operating temp as possible especially with those 2618 alloy forged pistons with their higher thermal expansion. Also perform the test with all plugs removed in advance. I'm sure you had the TB at WOT. All those would likely improve your numbers. Looks healthy for a IX motor considering.
Wtf, I hate to compare things but it needs to be said. Other channels probably will make this video into 3-5 parts @30 minutes each. But no, you guys makes this into ONE single complete video! Damn. Saying 'you guys are awesome' is still a massive understatement, you guys are beyond that!
My recently built STi has the exact same catch can filling and blowby issue. When I did the compression test, I also saw 125 psi on all four cylinders. But when I did a leakdown test, the results were abysmal. I would recommend trying a leakdown test on the evo to get an accurate gauge of the engine's health and a better idea of why it is overfilling its catch can.
I love this car and your progress has been amazing. With Evo's though, they are so challenging to keep competitive with reliability. I really hope you have unlocked the key to reliability on this build, bro!
Even when it's way over my head, it is so wonderful to watch someone who knows their job, and loves doing it. Those transmission techs are masters of their craft.
the mad scientist
It really is very fun to see a person with an extremely niche but very deep well of knowledge.
Do they have a channel
Arent they just awesome? I love it when people have talents like that, using actual skill and knowledge 👍🏻
Yep, its just those 2 guys in there doing everything. Jon is the owner and hes always making improvements. He really knows his stuff. Evo guys: ‘I replaced my *6* speed with a *5* speed’
Subaru guys: Whaaaat?
Lol..
Subaru guys: 5speed glass box... 6speed bulletproof box
Evo guys: 6speed glass box...5speed bulletproof box
@@AmirPomen is that true? I know 5sp in subies are much weaker.
@@gsent56 yea Subaru 5 speeds are garbagee

Im not sure oil oxidation will be a factor on this car, since i assume oil is changed very frequently.
I went down this route, using hydraulic brass and metal fittings. They're heavy, bulky and ugly and nowhere near as good as the legit alum speedlow style ones. Buy once, cry once in this department imo.
that editing with the music synched to the transmission being assembled and then to the finished product was insane, very well done 🙌🙌

I have to agree. This is great.
Watching Gears and Gasoline is like watching your Saturday morning cartoons. I love Gears and Gasoline

I want to post this after every video. Quality content.

Thank you for the Mr. Rogers feels during the transmission segment. That was wonderful to watch!
The artistry behind all of their work is so amazing. Their passion can excite even someone who has no idea what they are talking about. Great video!
That build sequence with the piano playing, gave me Gran Turismo opening vibes. I loved it!!!
Nothing better than grabbing some coffee on Saturday morning and sitting down to watch you guys work on cars.

Dude you are supposed to put that silicone on the other side of bolts, it might leak through bolt holes now.
Came to say this. Hope you can do the pan with the engine in or its gotta come back out.
Thought the same thing... wondered if someone else already caught it.
Honestly if it’s leaking out the oil pan bolts after being torqued properly you have bigger issues then just a leak
I learned that the hard way. Dropped the pan twice. 🤦🏻♂️
Came to say the same thing
I love the Gran Turismo style jazz musicplaying while the trans is being built.
