  • It's Ok To Have Compliments But It's Not Okay for Compliments To Have Us!
Everyone loves a compliment and that's okay. We all want to feel that something that we have done or said has benefited someone else. This is a healthy emotion. However, it is not emotionally healthy for us to be dependent on the flattery or compliments of others. God wants His validation to be the supreme accolade. In other words if nobody else tells us that we are good or we have done well God wants us to rest in the fact that we are very good. If a person has the power to inflate our emotions they also have the power to deflate them.
When we are emotionally dependent on someone's opinion for the good or for the bad we can easily find ourselves slipping into people pleasing behavior. The core of people-pleasing is a self-worth that is resting on an unstable foundation. This is a dangerous state. This way of self-evaluation is promoted by this world system. It can leave us starving for attention, compliments, likes, hearts, crowds, merchandise sales and other external stimuli. We must learn that with or without outside affirmation we are still good.
We need to take an honest assessment and if we are in this state we need to do the work to tear down the faulty belief and build a stable foundation for our self-worth to rest on.
We have to learn how to receive compliments, but remain emotionally sober. Jesus understood this perfectly. The same people who were saying "Hosanna!" to Him one week, were shouting "Crucify Him!" the next week.
As Jesus' popularity increased, the scripture says that many people in Jerusalem believed in His name. But Jesus did not entrust or commit Himself to them because he knew that people are fickle and can be superficial depending upon events. I believe that He has given us the perfect example about how we are to remain emotionally stable if we are complimented or not.
So it's okay to receive and feel good about a compliment but God wants us to be at a place that if we get one or not we will know that we are very good.
