Your videos are excellent, and they have saved me hundreds of dollars. You have probably have saved your many viewers tens of thousands. Thanks for all your help.
thanks to you, I do all repairs on my snowblower, thanks again, here in Norway we still have snow
TWO videos in one week? You sure are motivated!
lol
Hello Donyboy, I had a governor failure on a Honda mower. It was intermittent. It would periodically rev, out of control, when started, and I could not discern any pattern, or cause. The only way to remedy the issue was to shut the engine down, and manipulate the governor arm. The governor would usually act normally after a restart. Manipulating the arm with the engine running would not fix the issue. It would rev right back up when you released the arm. I took it to the dealer, who insisted it had to be the carburetor. Honda approved replacement, and when I picked it up, and took it home, the issue recurred on the very first start after taking it off the trailer. I took it back, showed them a video of the start in question, and requested that they replace the governor assembly, which is what I wanted them to do in the first place. They claimed afterwards, that they could see no flaw in the governor, but the issue has not happened since.
...you had an incorrectly tensioned governor arm, most likely. The person working on it probably placed the throttle to full run, took the nut off that holds the arm base at the shaft outside, held the arm all the way to the right, applied thread locker, and put the nut back on. Then called you the next day to say it was ready.
Hey 999thenewman, that would make sense, except that you could go out the next day, and it would operate perfectly.
excellent video.... thats crazy the piece broke like that.... and alot of work to figure it all out..nice job.
I like how you explain everything in detail Dony I do all my own repairs
4 years ago I had a then 4 year old Honda engine on a rear counter-rotating tines Tiller do that and over-rev. Before I could get to the engine kill switch, the top end grenaded through the stamped metal OHV valve cover. I was lucky I didn't get hit with hardened flying metal engine parts. I never did find all of the pieces. After tearing it apart and doing a Honda parts estimate, I tossed the engine and replaced it with a Harbor Freight Predator engine. $89.00 with a coupon.
Hey Donny
Thanks for the bonus video . Keep them coming.
have a good day!
Another excellent video! Thanks for all the work that you do.
thanks Marcel
Dony another great video. Keep up the good work.
Great video Dony, I always recommend your site to my friends, you do great work.
thanks
A fun thing to do is staple the receipt inside the front cover/page of the owner's manual. Then everything is together.
Great video Donyboy73, I keep a lot of receipts finding them is a nightmare. Nice throw away engineering....
Maybe registering your purchase at Ariens online might be a good choice too.
I have a Techumseh TVS-90 with a similar issue and the press fit governor shaft has to be removed to replace the gear. I haven’t tried heat yet, but I did drill from the outside of the case and the shaft doesn’t move a fraction of a hair in or out. Some of them have c-clips, but not this one.. LIke to see Dony do that one.
Be real youtube, be sober.
Excellent advice
Thanks for this good info.
Good video for diagnosis. Pretty weak link in the design of the engine. Thanks for the video.
Excellent video. Possibly of interest: The Tillotson 212cc or Predator 212cc engine is a bolt in swap on some models of Ariens snowblower. Occasionally the Predator is on sale at Harbor Freight here for just over a hundred bux. Might not be available in Canada.
Yes, save your receipt always BUT store it in a dark place or it will become a blank piece of paper in 30 days
yes had that happen, great way for them to get out of warranty lol. I usually photocopy it
I would think if they really wanted to stand behind it you wouldn't need the receipt because every transaction they make is in the computers and they should be able to look it up without a receipt. They would have the date the credit card number the name of the purchaser all in the computer.
@@donyboy73 I know this was earlier this year, but you do whatI do. Toner outlasts thermal.
Do you have a video on setting the governor so it doesn't run high? My blower was fine started sputtering so replaced my carb after cleaning solved nothing. I also replaced both the linkages from governor to the carb and no runs super high and hard
I found out it's imperative that you keep all receipts, some time back I bought gas at a gas station using pay at the pump , I kept the receipt and some time later the attendant came to me and tried to say I drove off with 40.00 in gas,, but since I had my proof, I avoided a lot of problems. it was the guy before me that actually drove off with out paying.
I'm sure that Ariens blower wasn't cheap, yet they keep making more and more parts with plastic...plastic doesn't belong in or on an engine LOL.
You're the man.
good video, thanks!
Thanks for the video. I have a newer model engine, but still similar. I almost s*** myself when I saw the plastic cam shaft inside the crank case. I can't believe the junk they put on $1200 snowblowers these days.
Engine manufactures love plastic gears! Owners and mechanics pay the price in the long run. Thanks agin for another great video!
Of course it's a plastic gear. Go figure. Just junk motors!
now it will make a great gokart engine no governor no problem 😉
when i buy a new lawn & garden equipment i always staple the receipt to the inside of the owners manual !
Next up plastic block ! and rods !
And augers!
I encountered a plastic gear on a slant 6 cylinder distributor gear in the engine circa 1970.
@@larrybe2900 I encountered a nylon timing chain cam gear on a late 80's American made station wagon (believe it was a 1988 Chevy Caprice Classic, we had a few wagons at the time!). Although it did eventually strip, that was at around 350k miles, so can't complain too much. Think it was plastic for "noise reduction", not that I think it helped any! Thankfully, the motor was not the zero-clearance type... Wagon made it another 80k miles or so after installing a new cam sprocket (reused the chain!) before it rusted out completely and had to be disposed of.
Good video
I know it's a long shot but maybe it is on of these rare cases in which one OEM's part will fit another due to using of the shelf universal components. this engine is looking very similar to my 2010 MTD tiller 208cc. try looking for mtd part number 951-11576 .
Hm. This could be one of the problems with my old Tecumseh 10hp. It's interesting that, these small engines need governors, that the throttle does not actually control the engine speed. Sure, pushing the throttle up or forward, does apply pressure to the governor arm, thus opening the carb valve, because of the attached rod. But once running, the throttle seems to have little effect on engine speed. It's the carb valve spring and governor controlling the speed then it seems.
I discovered this when I bought a rebuilt carb online. The carbs valve spring was way too weak to pull the governor arm back. when the throttle lever was pushed down. I could not find what was wrong till I reattached the old carb, and then the throttle worked perfectly again.
..plastic gears.. Why is that even legal..
Wouter d.B. apparently they make less noise than steel, but obviously being brittle as hell
Wouter d.B. So dumb in a winter grade engine
Honda and Briggs uses them too.
I have a BE pressure washer 210cc Clone engine seems ok after 3 year of use
I had someone make me a replacement gear for garage door opener for seven dollars Canadian with their 3D printer. It looks similar to that gear and worked perfect.
Can you show a different engine put on it?
How does the governor limit the engine speed?
thx don
I love my Honda snowblower!
Couldn't you do a bodge fix on it by installing a push pull throttle cable that limits the butterfly on the carburetor?
I like your videos
thanks archie
Sadly just yet another example of why plastic really isn’t the best choice in an engine.
That right there is why you register your power ‘toys’ online.
Thanks for the great vid.
(How about a video on what and why a governor gear is for and does, for us fans, in the future).
Hey Danny, did you actually fix that engine, was worth the labor? Now this was a good short video
That is why I make sure that the engine is American, or Canadian made since Chinese equipment is cheaply built and the warranty isn't worth the paper it is written on.
It's a shame they don't use loctite or some other method to "glue" that plug shut when the tiller manufacturer knows it's not needed. Thanks Don.
that is an expensive lesson for the guy. i would try get it fixed under warranty anyway i have a lawn mower that broke i took it to the shop expecting to have to pay for it because i lost the recipt but the guy said to bring a bank statement showing the name of the store how much i paid and the date it was bought and they fixed it under warranty. it would be worth a try.
I have an old Noma snow king D2784010 ( 8hp Tecumseh engine, 27 inch ) snow blower, do you happen to know which carb would be compatible with it? I want to put a new one on and can’t find a match. Thanks :)
should be like in this video ua-cam.com/video/elsP-Sp62z4/v-deo.html
Awesome, thank you very much!
More and more of these newer chinese made briggs engines are showing problems. Not good...
Switching production of some of their lines to China is how Briggs put Tecumseh into bankruptcy. Tecumseh could not beat the bottom line of B&S while building its engines in the US. The equipment manufacturers want to buy everything that they use to assemble their products with as cheaply as possible. They got it. This philosophy has turned a large segment of the OPE market into the disposable junk category. People have been trained to just go out & buy a whole new "whatever", & just throw away the broken equipment.
Urbicide as far as I know (concern) when they came to China they insisted what they willing to pay for the products , not I cents more accordingly to the information I obtained from my fellow countryman , please don't blame the Chinese , the lower they paid ,the higher profits the American make , go figure who you should point the finger to , obviously people automatically blame the manufacturer , American' way , so sad !
Urbicide I disagree considering Tecumseh went out in December of 2008 and Briggs continued to build most of their engines on US soil until the end of 2012.
Briggs did move the majority of their building operations to China in 2013 but that had no bearing on Tecumseh. Briggs did that to survive so they would not end up just like Tecumseh did with all of these clone engines out now.
Going back to what I originally said, this is outleast the 4th Briggs winter engine Dony alone showed, that failed quickly. 3 out of 4 were governor related.
However I can buy a Predator for $94.99 brand new and have had great success with those motors.
If you buy those motors in bulk you can get them as low as 10 for $100. So if I can buy an engine made in China for a fraction of the cost that Briggs charges for one of their chinese made engines, that keep showing they have an alarmingly high rate of failure, why would I pay nearly 4x for one of those engines? If the Predator dies, it was $100, not $400+. But,bottom line this stuff was not seen on the older Briggs.
I had an older OHV model from 01. It was made in the USA and I really wasnt very impressed with that one either. Same engine just built here.
Briggs and Stratton is not what it used to be and its sad.
When it comes to winter engines, the Tecumsehs that are still out their are much better than these new Briggs winter engines and in the US to get a Briggs you have to buy a top of the line model, like with Ariens its the pro models that have these now only, every model under that has an LCT clone.
Everything is all messed up now.
I will never, ever get rid of my 1971 Ariens sno-thros or my 2002 snapper.
One guy on another channel said to be, Briggs are made in Milwaukee Wisconsin. He still thought that. He doesnt have a clue.
Personally I refuse to buy or use any of this newer junk. Everything I own was built in the early 2000's or further back as far as the early 70's. Will not buy todays crap.
Also as of this year all L head engines are out of production. The Quantum which had a 30 year run is done, they are all the new wave of Chinese OHV engines now and what I saw from the Toros, their prices have all gone up at home depot and those are the cheaper selection, before you go up to the higher end stuff at dealers. Moral of story its all made poorly and its pretty sad to see.
We are going to continue seeing these engines fail in ways Tecumsehs and older Briggs never did, unless the engineers over their in Chonqing decide to start making certian components like the governors and cam springs better and other simple things like oil plugs that cant be removed on engines they arent used on anyway. The problem can be fixed, but will they fix it? I doubt it.
Fearless Honda snow blowers are American made. The "Pro" Briggs engines are more like the Honda GC series: a premium residential engine whereas Honda puts its Commercial-gradebGX on all 2 stage machines it produces. Oh and Ariens "Pro" machines cost as much as the Honda. I can guarantee the Honda will outlive the Ariens.
+Nobby Barnes Most of the members of Congress are a bunch of dirty skunks, but the very wealthiest of the stinkers happen to be democrats. Got to love the fact that Congress passed a law exempting themselves from the laws prohibiting "insider trading", which apply to every other American. We go to prison, they make millions of dollars.
When in need of cost cuts, plastic working parts!
Even if the owner had kept his receipt, i bet b&s still would still try to blame the failure on operator error, lack of maintenance, or some other reason other than being their fault.
Wasn't it fixable, perhaps they upgraded to a metal gear instead of plastic?
Briggs made in China :(
There are USA laws that manufacturers are REQUIRED to supply spare parts for 'x' number of years. (I don't know what the different categories are.) (Also I don't know what laws might be applicable to your customer or the motor/manufacturer/whoever.) I don't think the intent was that one needed to buy a $$$$$ major assembly to get the $ part. This is a legislative/regulatory issue and you could talk with your local representative people to see if they'd care to look into it.
Wow what piece of crap. Thank you for posting
Why don’t they just use a normal throttle system on snowblowers? Why a governor?
I guessed that one right before i came to your channel :-D.
One correct guess in a lifetime weeeeeee lol :-D.
So did you think it was brittle plastic, or just the "One in a million"?
the plastic is not good
They should have the receipt on file on the computer
Replace with Princes Auto Power FIST !!! engine
the 2nd number looks like 5 but u said 3 in the video
208cc briggs 13D137 Not very Common and not listed in there WEBSITE !!!!!!
Did he try to go back were he bought it. He should contact ariens.
He would be able to back-track when he purchased that clunker if he used a credit card to charge it. He could call the card issuer's customer service if he didn't retain his credit card statements.
yes but no go
I just bought a Simplicity M1024E snowblower brand new and it has this engine. I thought Briggs and Stratton engines are still American made? I guess eventually all small engines will be Chinese and Japanese.
Briggs now just the Name !!!!!!!!!!!
maybe the bigger Briggs are US made Smaller stuff all off shore
Briggs parts are Expensive Not worth to Repair
Joni English, the engine in this video doesn’t even look that old!
look at my video , rebuilt one on the cheap only lasted 30mins
i think i over honed the cylinder ( excessive Scoring due to lack of oil )
going to do a proper rebuild with new Block .
the Briggs Snow engines only Rated 250 hrs Emission Compliant , Bo Ball Bearing Crank
the LCT engines or Loncin made much better !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is that a Chinese LCT engine or a Briggs?
a BRIGGS
99% briggs snow engines DO NOT have BALL Bearing /cranks !!!
i have a 250cc Briggs 15c107 no ball bearing crank or steel liner .
the LCT snow king engine are supposed to be bulletproof
Briggs and Stratton now uses Chinese engine parts, they essentially put their name on it but it is an exact copy of a Chinese Honda clone
Well if is the dealer honest one he/she would gave him a copy of receipt and that point the owner should get the warranty.
cool vid like it
This engine was obviously sabotaged. Because most governor gear assemblies don't become damaged due to normal wear & tear. Somebody must have loosened the clamp on the governor cross shaft, allowing the engine to accelerate at full speed. Lucky it didn't break the rod. I've had some customers do this to their (destroyed) lawn mower engines because [they told me] "it wasn't revving fast enough."
Ariens 20001236
Governor Gear Assembly (136/208cc)
Sad that Ariens uses Chinese motors.
There are no more American made engines.
Exactly!
How about Cummins, International etc?
Today they all use Chinese motors.
Looks like thIs engine was designed at best to last during its warranty period. Nice work , looks like an expensive repair for a relatively new snowblower.
The question is Where was it engineered? not where the parts were put together.Plastic gear....great idea? no
Don't you just LOVE plastic internal engine components. :-(
Governor cup assembly is 590676.
I work on engines all day what kind of pos engine that you have to by the block to get a gov gear
Answer: A POS Chinese engine!
Phuk me...I just got this issue with my snowblower....ariens sno tek and it looks like the same engine.
I had one before that ran to 5 years without a hitch and replaced it last year with this one as I was totally satisfied with my old one....I guess I was lucky the first time and fell on a lemon that probably has less than 100 hours on it.....and yeah no receipt LMAO!!!
Wait till they make plastic piston, camshaft and Valve's lol you will be really busy 🥴🤪😜🤬
we are almost there!
ill bet water in the oil and froze the gear, tell the guy to buy a Honda and never worry about something like this aging , so glad I switched
Doesn't make any sense to me why briggs would put thier name on a Chinese made engine, that is a pos, and you can't get parts for, briggs should be ashamed of themselves, I've run into this quite a few times with the newer briggs engines.
