Great video Don! Have a TIP: when I fire up customer machines, I leave the choke completely on THEN lower the throttle. If the engine doesn't slow down, you know the throttle is stuck without having the engine revving up to a catastrophic RPM. Sort of using the choke to "govern" engine speed at a safe level. HTH
I really enjoy watching your videos. As a small engine guy, this is so entertaining for me. I could fix these in my sleep any more. I finally got my own snow blower tires replaced. As they say, the mechanics car is always the last to get repairs. I am still working on lawn mowers. My wife retired and is pushing me to hang up my tools and move on. She says I did my time and deserve to relax. I hope to pass my experience on to my grandson before I do.
i know you will appreciate this tip being from Canada but here in NY state, I use Rust Check red spray to keep parts moving freely and to help them move if they get stuck...Our repair shop was a Rust Check application facility so I had access to the good stuff...being a product that is made in Canada, you probably already know about this "liquid gold"....better than WD-40 any day...thanks Don!!!!......PS the Rust Check "Coat and Protect" spray is really good for keeping the stuff out and is a stickier substance that won't run off like the red spray does
Finally. Someone else who recommends Rust Check. Lol. I get my car treated with it, and just prepped my blower for the season with it on all the bolts and lubed the auger.
Hi Don!!! What a blessing seeing this video. I had just gone through this situation with a Crafstman snowblower with a Tecumseh engine. I took some close ups of the throttle linkage as I think I many have hooked it up wrong. I will certainly use WD40 as you demonstrated. Thanks for posting this!!! Hope all is well in your world, you have been an absolute blessing through all your videos. Thank you so very much!!!! Stay well!!!
Dony, I have a John Deere rototiller with the Tecumseh engine. I bought it used and was told it just came back from the shop for repair. I took it home and had to put s spark plug in it. Engine started up and revd so high it threw the rod out the side of the block. Had to buy a new engine. My problem was the governor inside the engine.
mine rev-up when I stop after effort with throttle at max. If I switch to max and do nothing don't rev and stay stable. If I leave at idle after a while the rpms drops to the point where it seems like it's about to shut off. Sometimes made some pops. I cleaned the carburator, also the secret little hole and changed the bowl gasket because before was surgin a lot. Maybe need somethimg more new inside. I bought a chinese one but it was worse than before. I changed Governor spring, new fuel line (is 6mm instead 7mm or inches measure, maybe too little?), I add a fuel paper filter (maybe choke more than mesh filter?). A valves problem? Head gasket problem? Snowblower run very well under load with max throttle and also under load at lower thottle (don't stop with 40cm of snow Hi and Low throttle)
DONY! YOU ARE A SUPREME MASTER TEACHER WITH AN ARSENAL OF KNOWLEDGE; SUPERB CAMERA WORK< AND IMPECCABLE TECHNIQUE! YOUR NO HOLDS BARRED< NO BULLSHIT APPROACH TO PROBLEMS AND REMEDIES ARE PRICELESS! WITH ALL THAT YOU PROVIDE YOU SHOULD BE ON EASY STREET BECAUSE YOU SURELY HAVE MORE THAN EARNED THAT RIGHT!!!!!!!!!! YOU ARE THE BEST THAT'S EVER BEEN & NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!!
I have a a 1977 Ariens ST24. on 2nd set of belts, finally tubeless tire fail last April. I blow snow off machine with leaf blower. Prior to that chock was often freezing in position. No primer on this as so old. Runs like a champ. Probable should do friction disc, but moves forward fast as I want. My owners manual says to leave carb & tank dry in off season. Never had a problem in fall because bad/stale gas.
I just had the same overrev problem but after checking everything you mentioned here it turned out to be that someone had changed the governor position at the front of the engine. I got it set back to run between 3200 and 3600 as per specs.
Dony, on a few videos ago, you talked bout the air flow screw and how not to make the hole any larger. THen you came out with a video showing how to us a micro drill bit to make the hole larger to stop the reviving. What builds up in the screw that decreases air flow? My engine revs and i have to make use of it in choke mode or the engine will die underload conditions. I am not sure what to do. The carb and the carb bowl are clean.
i had a customer with the same engine overrev and blew up the engine and it was'nt a seized linkage. The 2 bolts holding the carb to the manifold had fallen out completely leaving only the philips screws holding the carb in position and vastly increasing the air to fuel ratio. I had to replace the engine. Never have I seen that happen before.
How about that? Easy enough when you know what to look for. WD-40 fixed it for now. I didn't think it would be that simple. If the problem returned quickly, would disassembly and a good cleaning be called for? Placing the parts in a large ziplock bag with cleaning solution of choice, with that in an Ultrasonic Cleaner might be the best way for an easy, thorough cleaning. Another great one, Don. Thanks
Dony - last week I commented that your video on servicing a snow blower was perfect since I was going to be doing my neighbor's snowblower the next day. Now I'm looking at my own Poulan Pro machine. The manual very clearly tells me that the "Traction Drive System" should not be lubricated. The sprockets, hex shaft, bearings and bushing are lifetime lubricated. Do you think I should service it anyway ? Thanks.
Wow, those engins don't surge/hunt, they will actually idle! Probably need a carb kit for mine and a video from Don on how to fix the surging. Primer hose on mine rotted off this fall, so it is quite short, wonder if that comes in a carb kit?
Wild to see how much your channel and filming process has changed over the years. Seems like just yesterday I was watching you put a two cycle engine on a bicycle.
Don, had the exact same things happen last week with a briggs 14.5 hp that was left out in the sun all summer and it turned out to be the governor linkage that was under the gas tank. Much different from a tecumseh. Which engine do you prefer working on? Briggs and Stratton or tecumseh
Hello sir, i have a stihl ms 250 chain saw, i have some issues with the saw, i,e. When I starts to saw the wood by ms250, in 15-20 seconds I feel like there is a lack of power in my saw, it doesn't cut the wood, and if i keep throttle the machine then chain stops running.. whats the problem with the machine? can you please help me to resolve this issue.. Love and respect from India.
Not 100% sure they were on this machine but as soon as you see a 'dimple' stamped in the head of a 'Phillips' screw, it's not a Phillips but a J.I.S. (Japanese Industrial Standard) and, it requires the proper driver to avoid stripping the cross. Very common on small engine carburetors.
The issue I have with my Tecumseh is that it'll start up and run fine at first, and will run fine when under load, but after it's warmed up and I take the load off it'll rev higher than it should (when it's cold and when it's under load the rpm is fine). I will throttle down, but I have to put the lever all the way down to get it to do so. This is the second new carburetor I've put on it.
I have a similar issue. When in high rpm with auger and drive levers engaged my blower will bog down slightly to 3200/3300 and then way higher 4200/4300 when the auger lever is released. The 10.5hp also seems to not be throwing snow far after adjusting the high rpm down to 3600. It was throwing great at higher rpm, but was very loud and I figured I should get a tach to set it properly, now it’s not throwing very well.
Hello I just subscribed. I have a question maybe you could help me this is on a tractor. This is an Arrin 17.5 HP, I put a new carburetor on it but it just seems to surge. She starts fine, but then it surges., it looks to me like back when I was a kid they used to call the governor and that thing don't stay steady .it rocks back-and-forth creating a terrible Idle. Do you have any idea why that's so out of control. Thank you for your time.
I heard you , some 20 years yesterday , got my very 1st snow blower and noticed the screws , then immediately switched to just one type of screws , and for the last 20 years yesterday , I completely missed that I “ can’t “ bitch on anyone ! PS still have the same snow blower and ready for the unexpected , I live in canada !
grouse work Donny mate and yes a very common problem for sure on any source of outdoor power equipment as they say and always good to keep things free of issues and this is a good example of it for sure and cheers from Australia 🐨🐑🦘🌴🇦🇺 or the land down under to your area in Canada Ontario 🇨🇦🍁 and i hope your enjoying your Autumn/Fall season over there too.

There is nothing finer than the reassuring sound of a happy Techumseh Snow King engine on a cold winter's morning. Thanks Dony.
I've always liked how these Tecumseh's sound. Tried and true engines.
And another great fix!
Yes. I mostly have trouble with my snow blower in the winter time. During the summer, it’s mostly trouble free. Good video! Thanks for posting.
I have a Tecumseh hmsk80 engine on my snow blower, so this is a great tip. Thanks Donny Boy.😊👍🏿

It's impressively stinky!

Thanks for some great points….

As always very informative!
I just fixed one with a similar issue. Problem was the governor linkage plate on the throttle shaft was worn. Had to replace the carb.
The small engine boss comes through again with timely help and wisdom♥ Thanks Don!!!
Another great video! Thanks!
Nice work 👍
Great stuff Don, thank you for your superb videos !
Donyboy, keeping my Tecumesh Ariens running since a very long time with new bits of repair info.
Nice WD 40 fix, what grade of gas is best for new snow blower???
Gotta thank you for all you do!

What would you recommend for cold starting those B&S engines with no throttle level to prevent damage

Good day Don Yes good video Thanks
Awesome video thank you
My 8HP 26” looks the same that I bought back in 1985 from Canadian Tire.
Well, it looks like mine is missing some parts. No wonder nothing seems connected properly.
Where can i get replacements or a diagram?

Any tips for getting those exhaust bolt off in one piece? Just broke both of them on my MTD. The bolt metal seems very soft.
ok, just found the Quick Tip #4 - Removing Rusty Muffler Bolts video

I too enjoy and learn from your channel. I'd of been interested to know what max RPMs for this machine were.
I set rpms between 3200-3600
Does anyone know where I can get a belt cover for this motor? I have this in a 5.5 hp and can't find a cover anywhere!
Dony did you ever come across and Tecumseh that runs good but when you shake the machine it just quiets if so what do i do thanks

Yes lucky, I had one that over reved and the governor in the engine blew.
Dony what's a snow blower? A Florida fan. Ha!
U always come through

Why tecumseh uses so many different bolt types with there engines? I need four different tools to get that stupid carb cover off.

To deter any homeowner from working on these machines because they know most people don't own alot of tools this has been my own opinion this ?

Surprised it runs so good if it sat that long. Maybe they had run the carb empty.

Hey pal. How bout a fix for surging on this model
ua-cam.com/video/VZWpNnXjKAE/v-deo.html
😊😊😊😊😊😊
Sounds like the governor is out of adjustment
Did you see how he fixed it lubing the throttle shaft?
Even if it was stuck at full throttle, why would it be running wide open ? The governor should control the speed, no ??
Because governor can't move the stuff that's stuck .
fooled me again . was expecting a mouse nest .
Poor design. Thanks Don.
