To quote a much better source:
“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When you're an adult: Oh no no no, you can't play games, that's for kids.
When you're a kid: Oh no no no, you can't play games, you have to study for school.
I'm over 25 ... pretty sure I can decide for my self what I consider "adult activities worthy of my time" and if that's playing a game, where I get to pet a virtual representation of a horse and then proceed to press the punch button by accident and feel irrational levels of regret for accidentally pretend hitting my non existent horse, then so be it.
This is me... I dreaded living under those ideals. I'm so happy I moved out. Things are so much clearer. I'm realizing how much time my rents wasted doing this. I love them both to the core but man did they make growing up a gamer hell. I studied, got the job, even got a couple cars by myself. But it just wasn't enough to justify me playing games at any time.
Assassin's creed has a action button to pet those dogs or cats (i dont remember which) and in portuguese the text reads 'afagar' (a really old school way to say pet imho), The problem is, that is REALLY close to 'afogar' which means 'to drown'. I was devastated when I passed by a dog/cat and pressed the action button, I was totally expecting the guy to just dunk on the poor animal and drown it in the nearby puddles.... I actually released a breath I was holding when the character just goes and pet the cutipie.

Feminazi
The most immature adults are those who worry about being mature. Worrying about being mature is what children and teenagers do. Adults are supposed to be mature enough to know maturity isn't about what you like.
When my Tennis coach's father passed away, he was told by the doctors to play video games to battle his depression. It worked out good for him in the end! He played a lot of Guitar Hero and he said he had never had so much fun in years!
Yeah I remember a video game study was done in a care home with elderly people. The people in the care home were given Nintendo consoles to play with for a certain period of time and some tests were conducted afterwards. If I remember right the results were positive and playing the video games had some positive benefits.
I was told the same thing. I had actually quit playing video games because I saw them as a waste of time. But when I was seriously depressed my doctor recommended playing them. What I've learned is playing a game for an hour or two every few days (sometimes every day) makes me more productive because it helps me not get into really depressed states.
I suffer from PDSD, gaming (and those I've met by gaming) enables me to get through the day. Gaming does have negative aspects, but without gaming I wouldn't be here.
Also, just have say, love the Freddie avatar.
My Dr. suggested gaming to help with anxiety.
@@Dwarficus what is PDSD
I think this highlights a major problem of society. The idea that maturity is tied to things people enjoy rather than how one carries themselves through interactions with other individuals. Its rather sad that people will openly judge others based on what they enjoy and see them as immature but refuse to look inward to themselves and see the irony of the situation.
Exactly. Well said.
“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. I agree with you there. I am in several sub-cultures simply because I find most of the people in them enjoyable to converse with, even when we disagree about something. Because its far easier to become well seasoned and meet lots of different types of people in online games. I have met people from all corners of the globe that have differing views on things and few of them go on the offensive simply because they don't like or understand the things I like. When you focus your life on a small group of people, such as the royal family for instance, you loose site of the diversity in the world around you. Its easy to forget that even if we like the same things, we are individuals, not copy and pasted machines. Just because we like something different doesn't mean we are broken and need repairs, it means we don't want to conform the the beliefs and ideologies of a small group just so we can "fit in". I for 1 refuse to be a Borg... which is strange to me being a bit of a cyber punk fan
Yup. People can't just mind their own business.
And this is what lies at the heart of the social conservatism this article represents: Childish fears projected onto harmless things.
I’d rather be a grown man “wasting my life playing video games” than serving someone who doesn’t have my best interest in mind and wants my life to be boring.
Remember that the rich think that you are an object, a tool, a cog in the not-so-great machine, a starving dog! To them, you are expendable. Replaceable. A toy they play with and throw out when they had their fun. Proof them wrong. Stand up for yourself and your rights as a hard worker.
I remember an old friend telling me always that "when you grow up, you'll stop playing videogames", now he's 41 and is confined in a retirement lair (or an asylum if I recall) due to his mental health for not having any hobbies (only work & sleep) and getting consecutive distress burnouts.

Really? The prequels are terrible movies and do not deserve to be quoted. The ability to speak does in fact prove intelligence, at least relative to non-communicative creatures.
@@30noir The prequels aren*t that bad!
And we aren't talking "compared to animals". And even then, there are humans that are less intelligent than your average crow, usually due to birth defects.
@@30noir Whether or not the prequels are ‘bad’ is quite subjective, but the quote is meant to be understood as meaning “just because you can speak doesn’t mean you’re actually making sense or saying something worth listening to”.
@@30noir Mate, the fact that the prequels are sometimes absurdly quoteable is one of their more defining qualities.

"Grown people" is a subjective term these days. I've seen 50 year old men have about as much maturity as actual toddlers and teens acting mature and taking on responsibilites that come with
There are 70 year olds that still throw temper tantrums because they choose to have their feelings get hurt over listening to actual advice. You can't grow out of it unless you want to.

To paraphrase Sir Terry Pratchett, just because someone is old doesn't mean they're wise. They could also have been very stupid for a long time.
@@ajitsen6927 Age _can_ = Experience, but it takes effort on your part. You cannot be strictly an observer and learn how to be mature--you must act and then learn from what you've done. Far too many people try to skip the doing things part and think they're "grown up" when they lack a lot of personal interaction with others. Going to work can help but it isn't the standard that defines what and who you are by itself. What demonstrates that you have grown up is how you treat others and how you treat yourself. If you cannot take a joke, if you get upset by the things others do or say when what they do has 0 effect on you or anyone else for that matter, if you go around telling other physically grown people what they should and should not do with their free time... then _you_ are a hypocrite and are demonstrating that you have no idea what being a grown up actually means.

the full quotes even better IMO
"Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up." - C.S. Lewis

The thing that makes video games particularly dangerous to some is the fact that they are 100% legal and unregulated beyond pathetic labels on the box that parents ignore anyway. And this was before the age of microtransactions and gambling simulators under the guise of whatever game they're pretending to be....now the evil has gone all out and it's tragic really.

Well, I'm a US Army veteran and a gamer and I have never ridden a scooter. In fact, we used video games in the military for personnel training. Anything from ground combat simulations to flight simulations. Technically these are games, even if they are meant for training purposes. Didn't seem infantile to me.
Hell, a modified version of Doom II was made specifically for the US marine corps for fire team training and in my mind if the military can use a FPS game to help train their men even a little bit on top of the normal training then good on them, not only does it provide a bit of entertainment to the men but it also provides a 100% predictable run each time if nothing in the settings is changed but if they want a unique challenge that can also be done and it won't put them in potential danger that could happen if something similar was done not in a game setting.
Not to mention the fact that the gaming industry is the largest entertainment industry on the planet. Much bigger that the movie industry these days. Maybe not every man wants to die a horrible death on a battle field so some greedy politician can get his oil fill? Ever think of that?
Maybe what men want is to be seen as people and not soulless tools/pawns devoid of any thoughts or feelings of their own.
Maybe men just want to have peace? To just be able to live their lives like anyone else?
And I'm unsure where you get the idea that "Vidya gaming = poor life style." That only applies to a small portion who already have mental health problems. Which means if it wasn't video games it'd be another thing.

Methinks the authoress of the article needs some time in a room with Tetris, or perhaps the Style Savvy/Style Boutique/Girls Mode series. One has to wonder if she has played anything older than Pokemon Red/Blue. Unfortunately I doubt she could understand a cartridge based system, let alone anything like older generation computers that used diskettes or tapes.
I could recall having times where I'd play some games with my nieces. Sure they like the girly stuff, but they can also diverge into different genres as well. My oldest niece had chances to also play stuff that was before her time. In some cases, I enjoyed watching my niece beat the shit out of me in a game. As a grown man, I have to say that I despise how the world functions. Subsequently, games allow me, like countless other people, to enjoy the pleasures of escapism. They allow me to forget about this broken world of corporate greed, unstable economies, crumbling politics, etc. Furthermore, they give me back some of that slow pace which no longer seems to be a thing - because everything has to be hectic and excruciatingly exhausting these days. Without games, I would not have nearly as much energy to tackle the day. Also, they taught me many interesting things which are not taught at school, things that served to broaden my mind over the years. In conclusion, games have given me that which other things failed, and are failing, to provide. There is no need for such hostilities, obviously written to stir up some attention. How ironic is it to criticize "grown men" by immaturely complaining about their hobbies like a frustrated child? Not just theirs, but the hobbies of ALL people? Something I like to add to this, a steamer I watch is a grown man (Late 30s to early 40s) and he plays video games because he is, by definition, disabled: he is unable to hold a job and thus cannot receive a stable income outside of checks from the government. And no income, no savings to spend on normal/outdoor hobbies: his only source of social interaction is through family, he stopped going to the gym at 25 (Age he got in the accident), most of each check he's given every month goes towards bills while everything else he uses for food for the month, he lives in a crappy apartment because that's all he can afford, etc. So streaming video games is his way of socializing outside of family, even if it's online and over people in chat. But that's fine, because it's what helps him keep going. In fact, he admitted that if he didn't have his Twitch channel to share his experience, he would have ended it all years ago.

this lady needs some hobby, she's clearly miserable enough to write that shit. May I suggest gaming?
I worked at a prison for 12 years. They helped, and by a noticeable amount.
If I got paid a dollar for every time I've seen a comment with the time posted right as it's playing I'd have at least a $50 in my wallet. It's bizzare lol
@@wutsit2yuhhuh246 Only 50?
I've always seen belittling others' pasttimes for the sake of "maturity" to be the most childish and embarassing shit, surprised these people haven't been laughed out of existence yet
Yeah, you basically can't waste your free time no matter what hobby you have. It's "free time", you use it to entertain yourself or otherwise get some rest from thinking about all your responsibilities and problems. Some watch sports, some play sports, some watch anime titties go "boing". To each their own.
My guess is, is that they're such shallow individuals with nothing to show for, any semblance of individualism that somebody ELSE has, rustles these shallow peoples'* jimmies due to their lack of.
Yeah like I'll take this kinda shit from a guy who's cut social media and TV and all that out of his life, makes furniture and teaches his kid survivalist skills for fun in his free time - THAT guy can tell me I need to grow up and stop wasting so much free time playing video games.
But something tells me that the folks who write articles like this spend plenty of time mindlessly scrolling through their social media and vegging out as they binge whatever the f on a streaming platform - and those people can go f themselves because video games are way more engaging, challenging and meaningful than social media or TV/movies. Screen habits are a vice, no doubt, but as far as screen habits go, video games are the least bad IMO.
@@SquareNoggin But they are the best of "the bad" though. I play mostly sandbox survival/building games (Minecraft, Valheim, etc.) or MMORPGs. First ones works up my creativity and imagination while the second ones help me work on my social skills, organizational skills and leadership (I do lead group content once in a while), teach me focus and concentration (consistently perform my dmg rotation while dealing with any mechanics game or non-careful players throw at me), economics and data analysis (smart ways of earning in-game currency), and some more. Oh, and also basic stuff like eye-hand coordination, reflexes, etc. I've also finally started speaking English (not my native lang) while so far I was only listening to it and writing myself thanks to online games.
Meanwhile, watching stuff is a very passive kind of entertainment. I do get something out of it (like learning foreign languages or even just game-related stuff) but it's almost like studying at that point and not the kind of binging netflix or something that's so popular lately.
Anyway, I'm back to wasting my time improving myself and making others' day a bit better by succesfully leading them to victory in challenging videogame content.
yes yes and yes.
I’m 45. My daughter is in college. We spent countless hours watching PPG, and that show is *still* subversive and funny as hell (ditto Jimmy Neutron.)
If you can’t smile and enjoy things, you’re the one with the problem, not the enjoyment of them.
When my dad was still alive he loved 80s cartoons and watching them with me. I remember when he pulled Thundar the Barbarian up on UA-cam for us to watch together. He liked to talk about the lore and how cool the characters were.
Good times I miss.
@@kaiser8659 Sorry about your dad. But I am very happy you get to carry those memories (and other like them) with you.
And Thundarr the Barbarian is criminally underrated on the 80s early Saturday morning watchlist. IIRC, it came on at 6:00 or 6:30, and kicked off the day.
2:00 Legoland applies this logic. Adults aren't allowed in unless accompanied by a minor. Apparently, Legos are exclusively for children now.
I'd rather spend my time gaming than what most adults do nowadays, watching garbage reality shows and football, drinking and acting stupid and getting drunk.
In my opinion that's a waste of a life.
Seriously though, gaming is by far a less waste of time than drinking and smoking, in fact smoking and drinking removes time actively.
wait until you hear about playing games drunk and high (don't do it without a full team tho plz ty)
@@TheCobCAP - I've seen a game playthrough party of that on here in UA-cam. It's funny at first, but it's not something I want to keep watching. It might be better if I was actually at one, but I don't really drink or take drugs (I did for a short time when I was a teenager though, lol!).
And in some cases less expensive
@@melodyseverything6999 Valid, I love playing games while sober, but sometimes I just wanna get high with my bearded dragon (he does NOT partake nor does smoke go near him!) and play Killing Floor 2. Explosions and violence makes my caveman brain happy, as does pot :b
Obviously people should do whatever makes them happy, so long as they are not hurting others or themselves! :)
(Edit: Clarification about my beardie smoking. He does not and I would ground him if he did)
I keep thinking of my cousin who sold all his video games because, "It was time to grow up." He looked so miserable.. I hate that society made him feel he needed to give up one of his favourite hobbies to "grow up". This whole thing just makes me sad.
Well its his fault for being an idiot.
Life is about fun. Enjoying life. Your successful if you can have fun in life. You die when life has no purpose and you can't find any enjoyment.
He shouldn't have listen to *grow up*
No one has to grow up if they end up miserable and making the world even more miserable.
You can mature.. but no one has to grow up and become a boomer

@@penultimania4295 It's quite likely that his parents and/or other important people in his life (friends who already did the "growing up" thing, wife with a kid on the way, countless other possibilities) kept whittling down on his idea of self worth over it for years before he broke. And even if not, you simply don't know him or his specific social environment. DBAD. Don't be a douche.
"when I was a child, I used to read fairy tails in secret. Now as an adult, I read them openly. When I grew up, I left behind childish things, including the fear of childishness"
Fairy tales are awesome. A bit dark, but awesome.
@@lystic9392 true, especially the old “original” versions of European fairy tales that were wild AF and everyone dies and/or got horrible things done to them
@@TheCivildecay My Mom was always reading those ones to me in my Childhood, Fairy Tales of cut off thumbs, a girl who set herself on fire because she was playing with matches and a boy who starved because we wasnt eating his soup. Fantastic.
C. S. Lewis.
it's funny how gaming went from this "wow, you play video games? you fucking nerd!"
to "wanna game later?"
Same with Anime, back in the day it was called cartoons and it was childish, I was legit scared of watching cartoons when i was nearing 18 years old, but then I basically just said "fuck it" and watched more.
Way better than most TV shows anyways.
My first exposure to a video game was at 7, _attempting_ to play _Pong_ in 1973, when I didn't know enough about the game to play it right. I still play games to this day, and I always go back to an old-school game like _Ms. Pac-Man,_ my absolute favorite.
Since this woman mentions 3 Nintendo games in her gravely short-sighted (to say the least) article, you can tell she's never seen the Game Boy Pocket commercial with people in their 70s and 80s playing _Tetris_ and other games on it. You can pretty much tell she obviously knows nothing about the multi-billion-dollar _E-sports_ industry, full of grown men and women. And many of the grown men and women who played video games as kids are now game developers or have started game companies and businesses of their own.
This is one of those rare examples when saying "Okay boomer" is entirely justified.
Yep, it's absolutely ok boomer
"rare"
And a Karen. I bet you she drink a bottle of wine at night
@@MrHodoAstartes Yeah most of the time I hear "okay boomer" it's over the top and unjustified but in cases like these the author has no idea what she's talking about.
That's probably the saddest thing about this article. A lot of the Twitter replies imply that the author is part of a vast minority not worth taking seriously, yet my parents, as well as most of their boomer friends, have consistently stated that games are for children... and also terrorism simulators. The article was obviously designed to appeal to them.
I absolutely love how the so-called "article" clearly specifies "grown men", only mentioning women in the second paragraph - like it's somehow worse for men to play games than women or something sexist.
Men should work full time, spend all their free time fulfilling every wish of their wife/girlfriend and continue that existence until the man is no longer attractive enough to stay with him. On that point a woman should divorce him, take his money, his kids and if she's clever enough also his house. Make sure he has nothing left and then tell everybody what a loser he is for not being able to be a man.
That article gave me those vibes a bit. I really don't want to know who this Camilla is IRL, we shoukd sympathise with her husband.
Pretty sure she assumes women dont play almost at all.
@Andrew Holt What games do you two like if I may ask out of curiosity?
It seems to reinforce her obvious prejudice, doesn't it? Why do I sense she has had a really bad relationship with someone that was an avid gamer.
Everyone knows women don’t play video games and I, a girl who plays games, am just a figment of your imagination
My Dad used to be like that back in the day "You waste your time on video games boy, you'll become foolish in the head". I learnt a whole chunk of history through playing Civilization 2 and reading the Civilopedia! And found learning in that way to be quite engaging and fun at the same time. My Dad took interest in my passion for video games and learnt to appreciate, understand and enjoy the games with me and as a result we grew an even stronger bond. He especially loved when I played Resident Evil 1, (he wanted me to play as Jill all the time instead of the big macho man Chris).
He would stop watching the TV and pop in my room and ask "Are you playing that game with the woman and gun shooting those monsters?! I will put it on for him and we'll enjoy quality time together with Dad as backseat player shouting "Kill it! use the Shotgun!!". *Me:* "That's a waste of ammo for a zombie, Dad" *Him:* "Well that stupid pop gun you got is not doing anything to him..." Me: *Sigh*. He'll be burning up the food while he watched me play Resident Evil, many times this would happen.
He helped me solve the puzzles in the game and remind me to pick up the herbs when I pass them. The puzzles were quite hard to solve in those days but Silent Hill takes the cake on that one with their crazy ass, Einstein type puzzles (a little exaggeration). They really did melt my brain though and challenged me tenfold. This was the mid 90s and what glorious days they were.
I miss him. RIP Dad. Always in my heart.
aw, man, that's heartwarming. He will be remembered.
I had a fun time playing video games with my dad, too. We played Contra, Bloody Roar 2, Road Rash, and his personal favorite: Battle City (he's still alive, btw). Nowadays he also wanna play other game with me (Tank Force, an old Namco arcade game that released outside Japan but it re-released on Switch). He is old now, so he can't remember anything. Therefore, I have to carry him all the way thru the game while I still remember his strategy to play all of those games.
I also had another good memory about Megaman Star Force 2, the final stage (Mu Continent). That stage asked me to find 4 paragraphs while avoiding monsters and put all 4 of them in order. I didn't understand English back then, so I have to translate all 4 paragraphs to find out what happened. Meanwhile, my relatives, who also didn't like video games, walked past me and said "yeah, boi, this is what I want you to do, studying, not sitting around playing video games!"
Beautiful
Man i wish i had a dad like you guys.
The only parent that i have that likes video games are my mom and while she's one of those "mobile casual gamer" she does occasionally enjoy some mario like platformers that she found the in the play store.
From time to time when i see her struggle with a level she asked me "can you beat this boss for me?" and i gladly oblige cuz its rather fun having my mom be impressed with my platforming skills.
And yeah your dad will be remembered, it takes guys to know when he is wrong and spend time with you.
RIP, he might have an old mindset before but he has the best mindest of all that is "anyone can change their mindset" so he wan't trapped in the old mindset and learnt to appreciate other things
🥺🙏
I'm a middle-aged man. An adult. Some of the video games I play are made specifically for adults. I work an adult job. I drive an adult car. I wear adult diapers. I do adult things like taxes and take adult medicine for my adult problems like arthritis. The thing about being an adult is that you can do whatever you want in your free time as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else. If there's anyone wasting their lives it is these Karen types that write articles complaining about other people's hobbies.
Oh, and my dear old mom likes playing the Switch too. She's played multiple Xboxes and Xbox 360s until they stopped working, and some of my earliest memories are of my parents playing Atari and NES.
You want know what I find the funniest part about this article? It's the fact that Camille is unaware that Nintendo themselves actually CUSTOM MADE a gold-plated Wii console for the QUEEN herself! At her request!

reality shows is the real waste of time and brain, at least in video games ur brain is challenged but when watching reality shows it just turns off and turn into monkey mode, can still be enjoyable and nothing wrong if anyone to watch them but for a matter of fact, video games improve many aspects of ur brain
@@zer0legend109 It can be argued that reality tv does more harm than video games ever could too.
Example: People harassed Hana Kimura to suicide because she was only playing her character in the reality show, Terrance house.
