  • Sound systems arrived in Britain with the first wave of Jamaican immigration in the 50s and 60s, providing a link to “home” as well as the backdrop and the soundtrack to the social life of black Britain.
But as second and third generation black Britons grew up in the 70s and 80s, sound system culture was remixed as not just reggae, but soul, disco and hip hop found their way on to the sound system turntables and the bass knob was jacked up to 11.
For many, sound systems are a way of life, a heritage and a culture and in this film sound boys old and young, male and female, celebrate the extraordinary story of the sound systems - an analogue force still going strong in a digital age of downloads and live streaming.

How come Saxon, Ghetto Tone and nuff other sound never get a mention cah dey did bring a unique style and flavour and created the most successful style of DJaying - fast talking? And even produce most of the lyrical MC's of the day. Ah man like Leslie Lyrics, Tippa Irie, Phillip " Mi God Mi King" Levi, Colonel....Asher Senator, Smiley Culture the Cockney Translator...Big Up

    Nice documentary, thanks.
So, who can provide a full tracklist of all the tunes that could be heard?
(I would be already happy to know the very last tune during the credits though. ;)

its almost as if there are like, tonnes of sounds in the Uk, and to feature them all would make a doc 5 days long.
yeah, Saxon were definitely up there.... but this is a doc about sound, not Saxon.

I was thinking the same. This is just the tip of the iceberg. There is so much more you could say here. But it would run into days, weeks, months, years of duration...Best thing you can do, just go check a soundsystem, hold a corner, grab your brew, spliff or whatever you call it and enjoy a legacy. It ALL started back a yard.

      Yep.
Have it as well. Long time ago.
Was a good way to let the masses know what went on in the past...But it lacks...
You need to go back a yard to feel that ol skool vibe...Trust me!

+Hairy Camera Jah Shaka...Saxon...Aba Shanti...Channel 1...Gladdy Wax ( my all time favourite for ska, rock steady, bluebeat and ol skool 70s dancehall )...King Tubby's ( another of my favs from BITD ! )...People's sound ( been around long time )
Hopefully, you can check out half of that lot in the two days that carnival is on, this year.
I will be doing my thing at Gladdy Wax then Aba Shanti...
