Lived in London for 22 years and first time I went NHC was in 2017 and oooh laawd it changed my life for the best - feel in love soca, carival vibe and helped build my appreciation of Caribbean culture which lead me to explore the Crib islands(place of beautiful people and good vibes). and ultimately find my own Caribbean girl :) Much respect to those who brought the carnival to the street of London! Oooh laawd to excited about carnival Monday!!!
I used to go with my Dad and Uncle every year when I was growing up and I took my daughter when she was only 5 weeks old! It is a such an awesome experience. I always loved the Channel One sound system and the curried goat, fantastic!
Nice to see The Guardian putting out such a positive well-made Carnival review. Big up The Guardian and the positive people & vibes of the Notting Hill Carnival.
The Guardian downplay the violence though which happens every year at the Carnival though. I have always wanted to attend one of the parades, but have always feared getting hurt.
I agree, it’s nice to put a spin on a violent, uncivilised event which is only allowed to continue because of the uproar from certain sections of the populace if it was stopped. For the real NHC, search UA-cam. Plenty of videos telling the truth about what happens there.
This looks like so much fun. And considering it's gone on for many years it must be an awesome thing to do. No one seems to have fun these days. There is always something negative that has to be said or done. It takes more negative energy to be mean and hateful. Cuz, positive energy is happiness and flows into others. Making everyone joyous. So, enjoy the carnival and have a great time. And keep the positive energy flowing. 🙋🏿♀️😁👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿💃🏿
@RoadKillzine, I meant good genuine fun. Everything is mostly about their electronics. They missing out on life cuz they are too busy scrolling and not living.
I've never been to a carnival, not a Caribbean or Brazil kind, or the New Orleans... I guess I'm saying I haven't been much of anywhere, only to local stuff near Portland Oregon, like the Rose Festival and the Blues festival. I would love to see this live, so very exciting!
What a wonderful piece about a carnival I’ve never heard about. Lovely to see people preserving their heritage and bringing it to their children through such joyful traditions and event.
Yes, it would be a better way of life if the joy and sense of community could prevail the entire year, instead of the few days of Carnival. there is a Future, perhaps then.

All this talk on multiculturalism..to dilute out the fact that its supposed to be "our" thing. Thats why a lot of black ppl of maturity stay away. For e.g there was respectful silence paid to Grenfeld..quite rightly so. But what about respect to the Windrush generation..without which there would be no carnival.
These people look SO oppressed, under fed, poor and marginalised. Perhaps you should go up North, Guardian reporters, and go round a few white working class areas and see real poverty.
Impossible, anything you get at st pauls or moss side carni's you can get in notting hill plus way more. Those carni's are wavey don't get me wrong, but they don't quite compare to notting hill imo

Notting Hill Carnival is the best Caribbean based carnival in the world (outside the Caribbean).
I have to disagree, Caribbean is more fun.
