Never watched the movies but had/have maybe luna moths and walking sticks here. Luna's have no mouth parts and that's one reason they just last a week. They are beautiful though. And will rest on a hand or a finger! Unc will be well pleased about the bolt making. You and him both would be well pleased how I cleaned up a Graco handheld airless spray rig after the painter got through 'cleaning'. Our cleaning wasn't the same but all is well now. My 2 1/2 gallons of mineral spirit kerosene will come in handy. Thanks, John CS and don't get lead poisoning! Pencil lead, that iz!

Different butterflies n moths have a defense mechanism built into their bodies. The 2 round “eyes” on the Luna moths back are just that. At night when their lying flat on a tree these two circles looks like a pair of eyes from a larger animal and their prey will leave them alone. Our son was a big collector of moths n butterflies when he was young. We’ve had several Lunas over the years, they are beautiful. Yes, the walking stick is a fantastic design of God. He has a wonderful imagination that no man could ever dream of. We love your videos John, thank you!!!

The thing I remember about "Land of the Giants" was how they were never consistent with the scale. One episode they'd fight a cat with a ball point pen as a sword - the next episode they're fighting a beetle with a straight pin as a sword. Even as a kid that bugged me. But I still never missed it.
Great episode. That is precisely the sort of thing I'd love to have a lathe for.

I remember this film. Likewise, it stuck with me. You could do a tool restoration that starts with you going through a cloud of smoke and by the end of the restoration (switch to a bigger version of the tool you started restoring) you appear to be shrinking. Maybe get a big black pipe cleaner that you can pretend is a tarantula's leg.

The only time I ever saw a Luna moth was when I hitch-hiked from NYC to northern Georgia to hike the Appalachian Trail. The approach trail to the AT starts in a remote campground, and I got there after dark on the second day. While wandering around I saw an illuminated Coke machine with a big Luna moth resting on it in the light. I remember taking it as a good omen.

I had never heard of a Luna moth, but now I will find out if they are in my neck of the woods, the Midwest. One thing that I would love to see before I die would be the migration of the monarch butterflies in Mexico. Keep up the great stories, and God bless you.

I know Long Island had them too, but where I grew up on Staten Island I remember those stick bugs as a kid. When I was like 16 I found a nymph Praying Mantis on one of my mother’s tomato plants, I kept it in a jar at first as a pet and named him Clemenzo. Eventually he made it into a terrarium, since they grow pretty fast after molting their exoskeleton a few times. Watching him hunt and snatch up the insects I would feed to him was the coolest thing about it. He lived about 6 months, And considering their life expectancy being between 4 and 6 months...Clemenzo lived a pretty full Life. I guess that’s because in my care the chances of him becoming bird food had reduced drastically lol!

I've seen Luna moths. Gotta tell you a story..Cecropia moths...years ago, when I was a kid, you could walk along the LIRR tracks and I would do that between Westbury and Mineola. I'd collect mantis cases and an occasional cecropia moth cocoon. Well, I kept a cocoon between my bedroom window and the storm screen to see if it would hatch. It eventually did hatch overnight. Turns out it was a female. When I went outside that morning, the entire side of the house was covered in male moths! Pheromones do amazing things. It was Great! All the flapping wings were beautiful.

My brother in law was also introduced to the taranula in the military. He was stationed at Ft Campbell, KY and sitting down in a group in a training field when he saw his first. The Sgt. saw his face and told him not to worry, if they wanted to attack him they already would have as they can jump about 10ft! Haven't ever seen one in the wild myself (we don't have anything that large in the UK where I grew up), though seen my fair share of wolf spiders here in Florida.

Fast turtles and tarantulas! Yep! Driving down a country road in PA and there's a turtle moseying across the pavement. Didn't want that poor old turtle to get whacked by a car, so I stopped and walked back to move him to the roadside. I knew enough to stay away from his mouth so I grabbed his shell with both hands just in front of his back legs. Good move! But holy crap! I had no idea that they're so fast and that their necks are so long! My hands were JUST out of the reach of those jaws. He was a snapping turtle about 14" across - 7-8 pounds. I managed to get him of the road, but (another surprise!) one of their defense mechanisms is to unleash a torrent of turtle pee when they're in danger!! Bingo!! Don't wear sandals when you're rescuing turtles!!

All that wood from the trees can be given away or sold on craigslist to local woodworkers, or alternatively you can see about contacting a lumber mill if they want the logs. If the guys taking the trees down don't cut them up you may have better luck with the latter. One mill in northern NJ is called Boards And Beams - I don't know if they will go all the way to where you are or even take the trees, but it's worth a contact if you don't have one more local to you.

The way I look at how moths and other animals got this amazing camouflage and markings is that the moths that had the eye spots on their wings tended to live and reproduce and thus, pass on that trait. While ones that had no colors stood out like a sore thumb and predators would swoop down and gobble them up and not live long enough to pass on that trait.

I'm so glad it worked out for you, tapping or using a die can really be a nightmare if everything isn't done correctly. When I was a youngster I bought a cheap Chinese tap and die set and had nothing but problems, good tools and decent technique make all the difference! Thanks!

John 1966, Las Pulgas area of Pendleton we were in the field. One of our guys stepped on a rattler, screamed and took off. We ran after him, tackled him and started ripping his trusers off to find the bite. He was a city boy from Philly and was screaming and fighting us. I guess the snake was more surprised than him because there was no bite on him. We of course killed the snake. It is funny now, but back then not so much...LOL 😜😛😜😛😜😛😜

You realize if some unfortunate criminal were to break in to your home, you'd probably be forced by the courts to pay for his therapy after he dad a breakdown based on the shear volume of collections he discovered. Another fun one, thanks!

That mooring behind the shed, if it was polished with an angle grinder to a mirror finish would make a nice garden reflector. But it might blind them neighbors too haha

I found a vintage "Red & Black" Dixon carpenter's pencil in my great great grandfather's tool box from when he worked at Ottis Elevator and thought it was the coolest looking pencil. Turns out they still make a version of them so thats what I use now

Hi Scoutcrafter that shrinking man movie was a great story the novel was also great and was written by Richard Matheson the same guy that wrote "I am legend" "hell house" and that story on twilight zone where there is a little monster outside the plane and William Shatner is going nuts.

Can't do pine trees as I am allergic to conifers. A real pain when building anything. Remember the tarantulas in Duel? If there had been a motorcycle gang added that would have covered everything to frighten you on the road.

You might consider getting a latch/tamarack tree if you like the look of pines. They have “deciduous” needles that aren’t that messy. In the spring, the new “needles” are bright green and very soft. They grow with very straight trunks (another advantage) and were commonly used for boat masts.

I remember a few times when I was young finding a truly gigantic moth that had a wingspan similar to a pigeon and an abdomen as big as a sausage and it was frightening to behold as a kid. But completely harmless. I have not seen one in 30 years since.

As far as I am concerned making those bolts is artistry. Maybe you don't realize what an artist you are.

I would always see a Luna moth at night during late baseball games. There not abundant, but I've definitely seen many of the throughout my childhood. Not so many as of late but all through the 90s.
