Thanks again to Paul for helping us see what needs to be done. I pruned my dwarf cherry this year, for the first time since my grandfather died - its like 15 years old, and was in rough shape....I hope next year I can do a nicer pruning on it - I had to chop it way back just so I can reach the branches again :)

Really good video. One of the best. Gets across several important pruning points: lose the loppers and cutting across the branch collar in particular.
I like how Paul clarifies how pruning is arranging . . . not science.
After pruning awhile, you'll get a "feel" for what needs to come off.
One thing to keep in mind though, the more you prune, the more you will have to continually prune over time - that's the pattern. :)
After watching your pruning videos, I cannot wait to go outside and do some cutting. I guess I just have to wait till the trees are dormant here in Australia
He's already pruning!? We were going to wait until Mid to late February to do this. Sun shine today, maybe I'll head out with some pruners and have a whack. Thanks for sharing.
For people with mobility problems like Paul who would love to do more in the Garden, it would be great if Paul could show them how he's able to use a ladder to prune trees as an arborist - given that he has mobility issues with his legs.

Thanks for making all these videos! I have an orchard that I've started over the last few years and want to develop my trees the way he has developed his.
So I went out after watching this and before seeing what kind of saw to get and started my trees, realized I needed a tree trimming saw went out and got one but worried the teeth were all wrong. then went and got on again and watched this and realized that the saw I got will was great for our bigger tree limbs but I really want the other kind of saw but need to try this new one out first but darned if we aren't getting some much needed rain today LOL! anyway thanks as always for posting this.

I moved to a new home a few years ago and an apple tree was standing in the backyard. My father advised me to cut it almost in half (verticaly), saying it had been neglected. The tree was about 12' by then. I was quite surprised by this opinion, but we did it anyway. The first year after was a shock to the tree, but it produced some apples. The following year it was supercharged with fruit accessible to me and ripe. I've done some pruning-ish work on the tree since then, but looking at your video I kinda understood my father advise.... Thanks for that. My apple tree is now on a new "administration", thanks a lot ! :)

I love this video. I have been planting trees for a few years. What time of year is the best time to prune them? I live just north of seattle I would love to come check you eden out some time. My mom and neighbor went a few years ago and come back with so much info they didnt write it down and lost most of it. God bless you for teaching.

At the 20:50 mark there is a branch that Paul cuts. Picture this as the top of your tree. He cuts the main branch (leader) off at the spot where another branch starts. This makes it look like the branch just turned. Paul's trees get fruit the first year so, the weight will bend the leader which is why he doesn't have to cut the top but, that is how you can do it.
What does Paul do with the branches he trimmed off? Does he have a chipper machine himself? Thank you so much for putting these videos up for those of us who will never be able to visit in person.
Wow Bruce Willis has some nice looking apples... If you live in the desert would you want so much light hitting the top of the tree where it branches out? I’d be worried about sunburnt bark

That is what we were thinking too. December and January are the perfect months to prune your trees. I would have liked this video to have been a little better but, I wanted to get the info out in time.

MOvegangal I have a lot of "B" roll that I didn't use of Paul just making cuts. No talking in it, just Paul pruning. I think I might put that out as well just so people can see more cuts.

L2Survive Nicely done write up. Gets right to the point of what Paul recommends. The timing was just almost spooky. I pruned a peach tree the other day and was unsatisfied with the job loppers did. Good sharp pair of loppers, but like Paul said, it just crushes the wood and doesn't get close enough. And right as it dawns on me to ask, you post this video. Thanks again!
I'm itching to get out there and start pruning! Great filming too. It would have been nice to see the entire tree before and after from the same angle. Does Paul have a time that is best to prune? If Im in Zone 5 when would be the best time to prune?
Paul prunes his trees from the last couple of weeks in December through January so, get out there today. Basically anytime in winter would be fine. If spring come early, you waited too long.

I heard what Paul was saying about cutting all the branches that are going in the wrong direction,but the one thing that I wish you could do a closer view of is the difference between a regular branch, one that just has leaves, and a fruiting branch. He said the buds were bigger,and you couldn't actually see that. Thank you and Paul for doing this video. Could you ask Paul when you should start pruning a new fruit tree? Thanks again.
Hi Julia, what I did was googled "tree name" fruiting spurs so I could find an image, identify it on my trees and make sure not to cut those.

Yes, thank you very much for this video! I am new to BTE gardening (just a few months into it) and I watch everything you post. I too would like to have a clearer pic of the fruit spur vs the leaf branch. I just planted a stone fruit tree this summer and don't know what a leaf bud is vs a fruit bud on the branch. Also does this pruning work for all trees or is it just specific to apple trees? Do you have info or links to where he gets his saw and small pruner? Thanks bunches for all you do!!

I have several nut trees 8-12 yrs old ranging in height 12-20' good producers but require a ladder to gain access to the nuts. Is it too late to do a severe cut back to eliminate the use of a ladder? Great video, thank you for your time!
kevin Finney Yes, it is too late. I guess you could try to prune them in a way to where all of the branches are facing down but, I would plant a few new trees and shape them then remove the old trees.
kevin Finney nut trees are different in that you can use a long pole to tap the branches when the nuts are ready and they fall to the ground without damage. I have 17 pecan trees that are 50+ years old and probably 50 ft tall! I can't get them all but most fall. If I wanted to, there are machines that grab the base of the tree and vibrate it to cause the nuts to fall.
Thanks for sharing this video..now I only wish to prune my own fruit trees also asap.....because they are totally not done in this way I have all these branches growing up, now I know I better take them down, but can I still do it while it started blossoming already...there are a lot of leaves and the blossoms just fell and we start to see fruits...please help...or do I have to wait untill after the season. ..thanks

All of Paul's trees are dwarf trees. His ground is so healthy that they grow big in spite of being dwarfs.

+Chris Geuder He has had it for so long that I'm not sure there is more information about it. I want to say it is the 300 or 330 mm saw but, I really don't know. Any of the saws made by Samurai will be among the best in the world so,. you really cannot go wrong. Still, I will try to get an answer for you when I go to Paul's next. It may be a while though.
Pauls saw is the Bishop Company in Los Angeles, just search their website and their products. They average from $20-40 with a few expensive $60 and $80 options as well.

Would Paul consider "tall spindle" pruning an apple tree if you have very limited space?
couldn't see it real well, but it looked like Paul had a dual sheath/scabbard that held both his saw and hand pruner. is that true? if so, do you know where he got it? It didn't look like the sheath that comes with the saw.

Kathe, are you talking about trees you have grown from seed? At that young, I would be very gentle and conservative with them.
It will be some time before my trees look like his. They have only been in the ground 2 years.
Careful, some trees go crazy after only 2 years, I know, it happened to me.

I can't make out what he's saying. Is he saying TO CUT the collar or CUT TO the collar?
+Cheeto Fingers Cut to the collar. You should see a line like he says drawn by god, showing where to cut across from fist to last. This leaves the collar behind which is where a large accumulation of cells live that will migrate out and seal over the wound. Previous pruning magazines used to advocate either a flush cut which removed the branch collar and their healing cells while others would advocate leaving a stub which would sprout a myriad of new branches necessitating even more pruning in that area the next year (work, work, work; no need for it).
Does Paul have any citrus trees growing at his place?
I don't think so. I know he has apples, pears, cherries, figs, grapes, blueberries, and plums, at least.

No. If you cut more than 1/3 of the tree it will freak out and go into a panic mode. I would start with a couple new trees.

I disagree. I think though it would take several years... as you can only take away one third of the tree in a year, its worth a try. I would go in the conservative side, closer to 1/4th, and I would also make sure to add the chipped wood mulch, Paul started with, was it 16, or 18 inches of it under his trees, I can't remember but either or even a bit less would work. He only uses 4 in his veggie garden. The trees are that shape because the weight of the tremendous amount of fruit that he gets weighs them down permanently. But if you add the chips, and start pruning, taking away from between 1/4 and 1/3 of the growth a year, you might end up with something like his, and even if you don't, you will grow bigger and sweeter fruit and it will be an adventure.!!!!

+thegrovestead Paul only has a couple of pear trees but, everything else produces fruit within months of being planted. If pear trees take 10-15 years, with Paul's soil, I wouldn't doubt that it would take less than three years if that.
How does he trim his blueberries?
There is a whole video on trimming them. He basically opens them up and also takes out anything that crosses something else.

Gean Draget Back to Eden is all about Organic. Spraying your trees wouldn't be organic...and if you used an "Organic" spray (which is ok) it still kinda is not Organic because in nature nobody sprays the trees,and they grow perfect. Like Paul says everything you have learned is a lie.
why doesnt he summer prune???
meuhey Paul does things when he has time. In the summer there is a loot going on in the garden. In the winter, not so much. Since there is less to do in the winter and there are less leaves and fruit to get in the way, he does it in the winter. Since it is cold and the trees are dormant, this also aids him in grafting if he wants to.

If we are trying to imitate God's design why do we clear away branches and leaves that we prune from trees? In nature the branches and leaves that fall away from the tree will collect at the base of that tree's trunk. Shouldn't we be leaving the branches and leaves at the base of the trees that we prune them from?
+Tyson Sprinter Thanks, I had wondered about that too. That really doesn't explain why he doesn't just drop most of the small stuff he was pruning. I breaks down just fine in a wood chip area. The bigger stuff, sure, can go to someone with a chipper. Actually his "big" stuff is so small an electric chipper that run about $150 can handle it (3/4" stuff). Bigger branches than that can be used as spreader material or for other things, or given to someone with a chipper particularly when they show up to dump a load.
He already has plenty of mulch in his orchard area and does not need to add more. I would also guess that he doesn't want to have any unchipped branches and leaves just scattered on the floor because it doesnt look as clean as wood chips.
In a more recent video he addresses this. Branches left on the ground, even small ones, are a trip hazard for him. Plus he loves order in his garden and orchard so he removes the pieces he cuts.

The only vehicle I saw in this video was my 1993 Mazda Miata that I bought 20 years ago for $3,000. I drive it like I stole it and go through a new clutch every couple of years. With all the money I have put into this car, I could have been rich. It is fun to drive though. I love my go-cart.
