One of the greatest scenes in movie history! I still quote several of them to this day! "The doctor says I swallow a lot of aggression, along with a lot of pizzas!" "My father told me to never hit someone in anger, unless you were absolutely sure that you can get away with it." RIP Harold Ramis he was truly a comedy genius.
SO MANY funny lines and scenes in this movie! One of my faves (hell, ALL of them are my faves) is the scene where Sgt. Hulka gets blown up and Oxberger asks with all sincerity "Sarge, does this mean we're through for the day?" Sgt. Hulka then tries to choke Oxberger with one hand while flat on his back and in pain. That is some 3 Stooges stuff there! Absolutely hilarious!
"Lighten up, Francis" is up there with such iconic lines as: "I'll make him an offer he can't refuse", "I love the smell of napalm in the morning" or even "No. I AM your father"! 🤣
At some moments of this scene, and specially before 4:18 director Reitman had to do some editing because Warren Oates (Sgt Hulka) couldn't hold his laughter, mainly during Bill Murray's story, which was mostly improvised. Oates and Murray got along greatly off camera during filming, with Bill admitting that he was "in awe of Oates".
Yep I hiked agony and misery but not heartbreak it was closed for road repairs. I was so thankful. Misery was bad enough. Heartbreak would have killed me.
I still remember the first week of basic training October 1970 . Some guys were draftees, national guard , army reserves , regular army, former inmates of jails and prisons, alcoholics, drug addicts, thieves, perverts, you name it. . It was an eye opener for my cause I was just 17 and should have been in my third week of senior high school.
@@octoman511 yes they drafted or accepted enlistments from excons during the Vietnam war. In fact if you were going to Jail for certain petty crimes often Judges offered you a deal that if you served for three years you could have your record expunged. I knew a couple of these guys in basic training in 1970.
Francis Soyer was my favorite intro. I don't remember how many times me and my friends would use Sgt. Hulka's, "Lighten up, Francis" when someone would say something intense or get serious when we'd be goofing off. 🤣
'Lighten up Francis' still cracks me up and I hear it every day on the daily radio / podcasts of Markley, Van Camp, & Robbins..... God Bless actor Warren Oates!
Well.. best scene in any movie.. ever? I mean - how many times have you heard ANY of these lines independently, ANYWHERE, even by those whom have never seen the movie?? Yep..
3:48 I don't know about being a madman who steals cows but he sure played some good cricket over the summer. Liked that catch against the Windies! Someone buy this man a beer at Revesby Workers Club!
I thought about this scene when Pope Francis became Pope. I thought, wouldn't it be funny if he gave a speech in which he said, "Nobody better call me Francis."
As a Vietnam Vet, I'll never forget the first time I heard Murray tell Ramis, when he was trying to recruit him, that it's the Army.......we're 11 and 1! I 'bout died!
Winger wasn't a threat to Hulka leadership. He knew Winger was a silver-tounged smart mouth slacker who would eventually show his true colors when things started getting difficult. Hulka could break down everyone else, but he knew Winger could bring down the platoon with him. He also knew of his very real potential leadership abilities and had to harness it for good of the platoon and Army.
I always liked this scene because it shows the general is not a bastard like we see in other movies where they are over the top. A good general gets to know they’re platoon, he needs to understand who he’s working with so he can teach them how to function into combat. Yeah he’s a hard ass too, but when it comes down to it he’s just doing his job, and his job is train people to kill in War.
He's not remotely a general or an officer. He is an army drill sergeant. That's a non-commissioned officer. As far as this whole meet and greet thing. From the moment you step into Boot camp. You're individualkty is gone. They don't care about why you're there and why you wanted to join. They don't have time to waste on that. The purpose to boot camp is to prepare you for military life. As much as I enjoy this move and scene. It's bogus. I was in the marine corp and let me tell you. Marine Drill Instructors don't give a flying phhuck about you the moment you step off that bus. My buddies in the army told me the samething. And navy and air force.
At the start of the movie is a hillarious Bill Murray line. While in his cab driving the cranky old rich lady to the airport she states that shes never gone this way before (to the airport) in which Murray replies, Im sure theres lots of ways Ive gone that you havent. Just too funny.
I don't like nobody talking about my boy like that. Anybody does it, I'll kill ya. 🤔🤣 Yes, I agree. Definitely gonna be a danger to everyone on a battlefield. Including friendlies, I'd almost dare to say. He'd probably be packing his shit at the conclusion of the psych eval.

I said something like once to the XO of my company when I was doing the EFMB road march. He said; "2ndFirst, the girls are going to pass you!" I replied; "Sir, I am not in the mood". He left me alone after that.
Not exactly, according to IMDb, after Stripes he finished his roles in The Border, The Blue And The Grey (both released in 1982), Blue Thunder, Tough Enough (1983) and the TV series Tales Of The Unexpected (1985). Oates died on April 3, 1982 at age 53, of COPD, after a lifetime of chain smoking.

The best line in here, and I used often the past 40 years is - Lighten up, Francis.

Notice the facial expressions on Warren Oates when each recruit tells his story.
You can tell in one part he is laughing and trying not to.
He's so good. He's the straight guy holding it down.

One of Warren Oats best roles.
I'd argue his best.
My favorite film of his is Dillinger. He looked more like Dillinger than Johnny Depp ever did.
I always liked him in “The Brinks Job.”

I knew from the beginning that Bill Murray's character was a threat to the sergeants rank & leadership. I'm sure that happens often in a real platoon.
