Always Uber, don’t taxi. I’m Brazilian an I find that it is safer when you know the rout you are taking on your phone in the back seat. Taxis can unfortunately be taking different directions to run the meter up. Not just to foreigners, but to anyone that is not a local and doesn’t know the area. Love the video and the portrait of my country!! Also, the north east of brasil is BEAUTIFUL! Maragogi, sao miguel dos milagres. Beautiful places with beautiful people and food. Brazilians don’t even really go to rio that much because if you want beach the north is where it’s at. But it is very simple and poor in those regions, however still beautiful!!!!
Honestly, sounds like a lot of stuff to worry about: always be in a group, don't walk at night, don't take your phone, only follow your hostel directions etc etc.
Folks would be wise to be careful & maintain situational awareness, but my local friends always “ran interference” for me and minded all situations. I’m an introvert (big time) but I seriously loved how I never felt alone in Brazil. Brazil is special and different in how it’s alright to have emotions and people’s humanity and emotional situation is noticed and taken into account there. If a person wants to study portuguese language and/or capoeira or wants to have a nice relationship with a beautiful person, no place else can substitute for Brazil: Brazil is irreplaceable.
It is important to look the Google maps too while searching for a hotel. Sometimes days Copacabana, but is in a favela nearby. If you want that experience, ok.
My question is since the suggestion is not to take valuables to the beach, how would you go about purchasing a drink?Do you bring money with you? keep it inside of some type of small waterproof bag or something or where do you keep your money if you want to grab some food?
As a person who is in Brazil nearly every year i have to disagree on Nr.5. Lapa is a big party place. To call it "dangerous" really shows people never went there. Of course for women it is recomended not to go alone at night but that goes for nearly every big city at night! For guys its a normal place to party! I am traveling alone in Rio nearly every year and nothing happened! But don't go in Favelas thats right! Actually there is one where you can go in. Its called "Vidgal". It is a normal place where people do not behave agressive and its a favela (please say "comunidade" when you talk to brasillians because the former can be understand as insulting and chances are high you will meet people on your stay who actually live in such areas.) I know areas even in europe that are more dangerous. So people don't panic😎
I think if you‘re going alone to Brazil you should at least know a little spanish if you don‘t speak portuguese because most people don’t understand/speak English
Eh, you won't have much trouble really, just try to learn some basic Portuguese phrases! You might see statistics online about good English proficiency in Rio, however, the reality is that only a few Brazilians can actually hold a conversation. Try to remember some key words so that you won't have to keep scrambling for your phone. A lot of words for places in Brazil come from indigenous vernacular, so they are very difficult to remember if you only rely on phonology from other Romance languages.
I went solo and survived on google translate and hand gestures haha. Also some of the things this girl says in this video are not true. You can defo take your phone out in the day, just dont go waving it around obviously. Just be smart basically and dont act like a thick tourist. She's making it seem like every local is out to get you. Rio is amazing though, all my friends went south east asia but i'm so pleased I did South America instead. I find the culture and people far more interesting personally.
I just came back from 2 weeks trip to Brazil, family of 5. One of most unpleasant things I experienced was the fact that in many attractions, like Jardim Botânico in Rio the price of entrance for foreigners is double the price of Brazilian citizens and sometimes there is no children discount for foreigners' kids. That was really unpleasant.
You will be fine! If you're foreign then that will supercede your race in the eyes of Brazilians, for better or for worse. Doesn't matter what your race is, if you're foreign then you will be treated much better than a Brazilian. Many people treat me like trash (it's a Brazilian thing lmao, just bad manners in regards to fellow Brazilians,) until I speak in English.
A lot of her tips just seem cowardly imo. I’m 6ft black guy as well and always solo travel and go to the places which ‘are not safe’ and have never been robbed or anything. But thats probably my street wise instinct from living in London. Go enjoy yourself bro! And keep your witts about you! Im looking to go for 11 nights solo!
People don’t care about your height, no one mugs with a knife here. People use guns, and denies your height. And being black doesn’t look native at all. Can spot a black gringo miles away.

I'm planning to go to Rio in November (alone lol), but don't know any Portuguese, is knowing English enough to get by?
I think if you‘re going alone to Brazil you should at least know a little spanish if you don‘t speak portuguese because most people don’t understand/speak English
Learn some Portuguese. English isn’t spoken that much plus Spanish isn’t respected and you’ll be treated better if you speak Portuguese

Where should you leave your belongings like your phone if you aren't supposed to carry it around the city? In your night locker in hostel? 😆
Yeah it’s safer in the hostel as they are less likely to be burgled than you be mugged!

It’s called Books Hostel! The link is in the description ❤️
How is it so easy for things to be taken? What are they magician's? I mean carry simple of course but pay attention to.your surroundings.
