Thank you for your take on cold plunging. I have been doing it regularly for three years now. I started with cryo therapy but switched to cold plunging very quickly because it is more affordable. I live in Germany and in winter I can just bathe in a barrel outside or a lake close by. But in summer I use a cold plunge with a cooling unit. I suffer from depression and anxiety since puberty and the first time I tried cold therapy I felt almost high afterwards. I hadn’t felt so good in years and everything seemed clearer and more enjoyable. I started to seek out this feeling and it has been one of the quickest ways to lessen my anxiety and symptoms of depression. It is not a cure but it helps my daily life immensely. It gave me the energy to care about my body again, to move regularly, work out, lose weight, eat healthy, socialize, recover when I am overwhelmed, minimize migraines and period cramps. It is a great tool for me and helps me more consistently than anything I have tried before. I don’t think it is for everyone but I would encourage people to try it out. I am thankful everyday that I tried it even though I hated the cold. But please if you do, do it for longer than 20 seconds. It is okay if you jump out on your first try but to gain benefits you should stay in longer. If your feet hurt I recommend neoprene socks and in general slow and measured breathing helps.
I know you didn't mean it this way, but I've had a number of judgmental comments about me only lasting for 20 seconds saying I didn't do it right or it didn't count. I think it's great that I tried regardless :)
@@JustinaErcoleAgreed. I love that you tried it and explained some of the research. Sometimes our bodies are smarter than we are and we should listen. 🙂
@@JustinaErcole I am really surprised that you felt judged by my comment and I no shape or form do I want to tell how to feel about my opinion. After watching your video I felt compelled to make a comment because I thought that there will be people watching and reading the comments that are interested in trying ice bathing. I have several years of experience and do it regularly multiple times a week. I did not comment to diminish your experience or to tell you that your first try didn’t count. I myself didn’t manage much longer the first time. I think that there is a great misconception about ice bathing because it is put into this self-care, wellness and recovering corner. Going into cold water is extremely difficult and painful as well. It’s not like relaxing in a sauna. The body is under stress while doing it. If you’re doing it for the first time it is really difficult to stay in long enough to really see benefits. Which is why I think you probably would have benefited from the coaching you were offered. If you listen to your body while ice bathing it will tell you that you should get out of there as soon as possible. It’s just a natural reaction to cold water. If you are a beginner it will take you much longer than 30 seconds to control your breathing and to get acclimatized to the water temperature. And even if you are used to it it will always be a challenge. So to everyone interested don’t be discouraged if you cannot last very long the first couple of times. Try neoprene gloves and socks. But in general 20 seconds is a very short amount to see the benefits of ice bathing. If you go through all the trouble try to make it worth your while. Of course I am just a random person on here and nobody can really prove my proclaimed experience but I think there should be room for people that might have more experience than you Justina, just so that your viewers can make up their own mind. The experience you showed was a commendable first try and in general people can stay in as long as they want (as long as they’re safe) but I feel that it would be dishonest to say that 20 seconds is a long enough time. I general I think we shouldn’t define this experience as having counted or not. Cold plunging is something people should do for themselves and everybody gets something different out of it. So yes I think you can be proud of it and you tried something new. It wasn’t for you and that’s okay as well. But you might have had a different experience with coaching and with staying in longer.
Hands-down, you are the best content creator, so honest and open, down to earth. It is so refreshing to watch your videos! Please keep the education coming and staying true to yourself.❤

Thank you!! I actually thought people were going to call me a hypocrite but I'm just playing around testing what I'm comfy with. I really appreciate that you saw that :)
I don't like being cold, so I would not try this. What I do love is steam saunas, if I were to splurge on any thing, it would be that. I have never slept better than spending 20 minutes in a sauna in Lake Tahoe...best sleep of my life, 20 years ago and I still remember how nice it felt. This is good info!
Great video! Thank you for the info. I have a friend going through a really hard time and right now cold plunges seem to be the only thing she talks about that is giving her joy. Even though it’s not for me, I’m happy it’s serving a purpose for her. There are even communities that do it together so I think that social outlet can be good for some people. Not that there aren’t plenty of other places to look for community, but I guess if you’ve already found it with cold plunging you might be more inclined to stick with it.
I was going to say that, per your comments at the end about how it can actually inhibit certain physiological changes, that the only significant uses I've seen that really makes sense in context are in recovery for athletes that are literally in competition or actors who are doing a lot of stunt work. They aren't necessarily looking to improve per se because they know that they don't have time enough to do that. They're just looking to get back to baseline if they can because they'll have to do it all over again in a very short time
Listen, I've started ice swimming this winter (I live by a lake in a country where lakes are frozen for several months in a year so I have easy access) and it has become one of my favourite hobbies, so when I saw you posted this video I got SO excited 👀 The other not-yet-confirmed scientific findings aside, I've found that for me personally ice swimming really is one of the best ways to deal with stress and anxiety - simply because when I go neck-deep into water that is +1 degrees Celcius, my body goes into survival mode and I cannot think of anything other than the raw experience itself and how my body physically feels (I've heard the same effect can be achieved by eating super spicy candy, basically you have to get a sensory overload that forces you to stop thinking for a moment). And the feeling I get about half a minute after I've come out of the water is incredible, so many feel-good hormones just swirling around (not to mention going to a hot sauna a few minutes later). It's probably a little bit masochistic but imo it's a small price to pay for getting out of my head every once in a while - I feel like I often sleep much better afterwards, too! I could talk about this all day but suffice it to say, this was a very interesting video and I'd encourage anyone reading this comment to try cold plunges/ice swimming if you have the chance, even if just to say you've been brave enough to do it 😅
The point where it may prevent muscle gains makes sense. Going against the body's natural response to stress can't be fully beneficial. I think people see it as a focus or something they can track progress on which isnehy it is motivational. I've cold plunged before in a soa and honestly I do believe that a sauna and a quick cold blast in the shower after is just as effective foe known recovery. Great video as always ❤

As a finnish person those cold plunge places seem weird. We just go to a public sauna and cold plunge in natural waters 😊 ice swimming is super popular here. You will feel super relaxed afterwards

Really loved this video. I don't think I would have lasted even 20 seconds! I love how current you stay with trends and new research and then of course bringing all that to UA-cam. I don't have any suggestions for the next popular thing but I'm looking forward to you covering it!
Same, same and same 😍☺️ I love and need my hot shower at the end of the day to wind down, it’s my calm me-time, it’s so precious to me…ruining it by adding 30 seconds of cold at the end of that? You said it best, umm no thank you 😅😂 yeah I don’t even know if I could have made myself go in all the way the way Justina did, or at least not without a lot of loud „holy crap wtf aaaah“. I like to do breathing exercises for stress which comes off the Wim Hoff method. I think a cold shower may help. I know that professional athletes use cold plunge for decreased inflammation. I do think you should check with your doctor before doing it though. It DOES shock your system. Thanks for the review! I like the winter but I doubt i can plunge into a cold bath. I do somewhat follow WIm Hoff but I do not think I can get into it as deeply as many of his followers.
Thanks for this. I didn't think this was an easy fix, but I'm heading out for a one off appointment at a spa that has cold plunge, sauna and hydrotherapy pool as an hour or self care.
You absolutely nailed it at the end. Ice baths will kill your gains and only make sense for competitive in-season athletes or after major competitive events. It only has occasional specific uses. Recovery for most people should come from sleep, food and relaxation. Men treating testosterone as a magical #1 priority goal and wanting to increase their test if it's already at healthy levels rather than viewing testosterone levels as part of a larger picture of hormonal health and viewing resistance training performance/libido/etc as a cumulative result of many factors, including hormonal health, is very stupid. It makes them vulnerable to hucksters saying ice baths will boost your test, when they neglect to mention that the increase is temporary. If you want to do something hard, take your sets very close to failure with excellent technique, full ROM, and high volume. Teach yourself college-level physics or higher mathematics (where you get into actual abstract proofs and are no longer doing mechanical calculations). There are many other more challenging things to do in life than just sit in cold water that will also be more beneficial.
Aw girl 20 seconds! I feel like you didn’t get the full experience lol. ESP if it was a gift. I find you need to be quick like get in quick! But great start! Not my forte either but I do feel great after! 😊
When i go backpacking long distances into remote areas, my favorite moment is when i get to swim in a really cold lake and it definitely feels like it helps with inflammation so i can get back to it the next day.
Nice video ❤! Just curious: did you do any preparation before that cold plunge? Some hot & cold showers maybe? Or just jumped into the cold for 20sec unprepared? If the latter is the case, props to you, girl 💪
I’ve heard of most of these benefits from cold showers, including the mental health benefits of basically forced meditation and mental endurance. I’ve never done either, but a couple polar plunges while camping. Something about a cold shower almost sounds even more uncomfortable. And for mental benefits, I’ll stick to some long aerobic workouts like running and erging.
Haven’t made it all the way through the video yet so you might talk about this but you’re talking about accessibility and the research on cold showers yields similar results and I feel like that would be a much more accessible option for people.
Ohhh sorry my brain kept reading it as cold plunging. Yeah the results are similar in the studies done so far. But I still stand by trying to master the basics first :)
So I actually did this a bunch (with just my hands hahaha) in prep for my unmedicated home birth - def helped me build mental strength and perseverance
What are your thoughts about getting regular massages? For example once a month. Are there better ones to get like lymphatic, deep tissue, cupping or Swedish?
I have never and will never do a cold plunge. I have multiple autoimmune diseases and being cold causes me so much pain, so I feel like it would completely defeat the purpose of this.
It does give off tech bro “if I’m suffering it must be doing me good vibes”. Great for those who enjoy it but, in the words of Amy Poehler - “Good for you! Not for me.”
I actually recently listened to a podcast from the Minimalists and they had a guest star person who talked about ice baths. She said it worked for her because she has hashimoto's and none of her prescribed medications worked for her. I didn't know much about ice baths before her talk and was actually intrigued that not only it helped reduced inflammation and pain but she talked extensively about how it helps manage stress and the whole fight/flight mode. She described a whole different mindset and thinking process as you sit in the cold water. She differentiated it with cold showers or cold air exposure because it is only on the surface of your skin- the baths will actually reach into muscle and organs for effect. At the same time, I don't think it's that accessible - need many bags of ice vs cold showers that most people can access. There is a whole business for this but is quite expensive.
Even with an autoimmune disease I don’t see myself doing this. We have access to a pool that in May and September is around 65-70 degrees and I just bring my wetsuit for doing laps. Too cold.
I wanted to cold plunge to see if my arthritis inflammation would go away......but you aint catching me in a tub other people have been in. LOL I then wanted to try that cryo thing but its too much $$
Ive been so curious about cold plunges!! I watched Kiun B on the UA-cams with a vid about how the folks in Yakutsk, Siberia do it... OUTSIDE IN -50 DEGREE WEATHER! 😮 It was fascinating!! It seems like it is an immunity booster for them, as the results they see are that they don't get sick! It's a really cool video anyways, and I think you might like it 😊
Not everything needs to be so optimal all the time. Yes thank you Justina lets normalize doing something because it makes you feel good.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I haven’t done a cold plunge but I can say that exposing myself to stress has not helped me cope with stress any better 😂

Yep! This is exactly what I said in the video :)
Aw girl 20 seconds! I feel like you didn’t get the full experience lol. ESP if it was a gift. I find you need to be quick like get in quick! But great start! Not my forte either but I do feel great after! 😊
I got a full enough experience lol
When i go backpacking long distances into remote areas, my favorite moment is when i get to swim in a really cold lake and it definitely feels like it helps with inflammation so i can get back to it the next day.
You’re stronger than me for sure!
@@JustinaErcole no way, just different. I swear it's the ambiance that pulls me in. ;)
Nice video ❤!
Just curious: did you do any preparation before that cold plunge? Some hot & cold showers maybe? Or just jumped into the cold for 20sec unprepared? If the latter is the case, props to you, girl 💪
nope I just jumped in!
@@JustinaErcole you are awesome!
Sorry I read this a few times and I’m not sure I understand. Is there something else you’re saying is more accessible?
Cold showers as opposed to cold plunge
Ohhh sorry my brain kept reading it as cold plunging. Yeah the results are similar in the studies done so far. But I still stand by trying to master the basics first :)
So I actually did this a bunch (with just my hands hahaha) in prep for my unmedicated home birth - def helped me build mental strength and perseverance
Oooooh wait that’s kind of genius
What are your thoughts about getting regular massages? For example once a month. Are there better ones to get like lymphatic, deep tissue, cupping or Swedish?
Honestly I have zero clue 😂
I just know I’m not in a tax bracket to afford regular massages 😭
I have never and will never do a cold plunge. I have multiple autoimmune diseases and being cold causes me so much pain, so I feel like it would completely defeat the purpose of this.
aww i love your cat!!
Ooh I don't think I could go for cold plunging, unless I'm going for a swim in a lake (but it has to be in summer time, lol) 😂
Omg I can barely do that too 😂
Id rather stand at the edge of a building honestly 😂😂 thank you for the video! And your plundge 100 percent counted.
Thanks friend ❤️
It does give off tech bro “if I’m suffering it must be doing me good vibes”. Great for those who enjoy it but, in the words of Amy Poehler - “Good for you! Not for me.”
Hahah love that!
I only do cold plunges (max 5 seconds) after using a finish sauna of 85°C or up for at least 15 minutes. Just ice cold water gives me migraines!!!
Is a cold shower equivalent to this or no?
Similar but the benefits are apparently stronger if you’re submerged
Oops! I wrote my opinion right before you addressed the athlete thing. lol I like to write as I hear it cause I'll forget!
I just did the same! Lol.
Me watching this even though I have Raynaud so it would make me faint 🤣
Oh I definitely don’t recommend then lol
And for someone with an autoimmune disease, this may be a great option!
Even with an autoimmune disease I don’t see myself doing this. We have access to a pool that in May and September is around 65-70 degrees and I just bring my wetsuit for doing laps. Too cold.
Along the same lines as cold plunging, what about cryotherapy?
Not sure! I haven’t done any research into it.
I hope you’re gonna say they’re not 🤞
Gotta watch and see! :)
I wanted to cold plunge to see if my arthritis inflammation would go away......but you aint catching me in a tub other people have been in. LOL I then wanted to try that cryo thing but its too much $$
hahahahah that's totally fair
20 seconds is a long time! Especially for someone's first try, don't knock yourself!
The owner said I should do 3 min and I was like 👀👀👀
Ive been so curious about cold plunges!! It's a really cool video anyways, and I think you might like it 😊
Omg I could NEVER lol
I would hate it.
Haha I did too
Nope! No way. Not gonna. Too cold. I'll sit here with whatever mediocre gains I get without freezing my butt off. Lol
And your gains will be better without it!
And so will my mood because F being that cold! Hahahah Now sauna time...gains or not, I love a relaxing sauna session!
ok maybe this is a stupid question but can you just plunge into your bathtub filled with cold tap water if you wanna try it lol
Totally! Some people don’t have a tub though :)
Everyone has a cold plunge, it’s called a bathtub! I have been known to do this, and 20 seconds doesn’t count.
I didn’t realize my standing shower was a bathtub! Thanks so much for letting me know 🫠
What a nasty, judgemental thing to say.
I am so sorry didn’t mean to be an elitist bathtub user ! I will try to do better!
A cold plunge in a state where you need ear muffs?!??! Isn't walking outside a cold plunge?!
Hahahaha yes it was
