16 year Volunteer firey in Australia, veteran of 16 fire seasons, including Black Saturday fires in Victoria with the CFA. This song hits home, having been a "Vollie" since I was 18, in three states. But the worst call is call with kids. I can still remember responding to a job, only 100m from our "shed" as we call the station (and back then it literally was just a shed!) for car vs truck. The truck had completely crushed the car, the roof was just about touching the back seat. Well me and my mate raced in, and our hearts near came out of our chests when we saw the baby seat in the back of that car. We worked like maniacs to try and get into that space, and we feared the worst, but that roof had stopped just short of that little boy. We got him out and reunited with his Mum. The thing about it though, was at the time, we both had sons around the same age as this little boy. Our wives later found us in my mate's shed, where we were holding a debrief of the incident, which included quite a few cans, that job had rocked both of us. But we bounced back, and we still answer the call. Some things just stick with you (I also served 15 years as a Prison Officer in Maximum security, that's a door I keep very closed!) and at times your mind wonders, but your mates and Braigade always have your back, they become your second family, and it's a life I'm bloody glad I've lived.

An absolute PASS!! I'm a first responder in law enforcement and also served in '91 (ODS) Operation Desert Storm and (OIF) Operation Iraqi Freedom. I was an Army Nurse and when I went into basic training, Hurricane Hugo hit in 1989. We hit the ground running with medicine, food, and care. PTSD is very common among first responders and a good way to deal with it is to learn how to compartmentalize what you feel and see on the job, and it helps you push through. In doing so, it helps train your brain to let you look at those sights and feelings when you get some spare time.We never forget what we see and feel- but it does make it easier to deal with. It's all too easy to self-medicate and so many do and it's very understandable. I walk that same line with my fellow first responders and please know that you aren't the only one. Dwayne, stay safe and sound and expect the Army base to be pretty much shutdown, and remember, expect the unexpected. *Crisp Salute* US Army Maj. (Ret.)

Thank you so much!!!! My husband is chief of our volunteer fire department, we’re both firefighters 🚒 and I and my daughter are 1st responders. Our shift is never over and we’ve seen much worse than what’s in this video. The death of children in a car accident is the worst thing. Burnt bodies in a house fire. It’s hard but we stay with it. We thank God for an amazing Chaplain on our committee. My husband has been a firefighter for over 25 years and I over 15 after I quit working to keep my 1st granddaughter.

I'm a volunteer fire fighter in Australia 🇦🇺 and it's all very true. You see it you live with it, when that pager goes off at any time of the day, to go somewhere you might never of been to save someone you never met. I've been hospitalised multiple times but at the end of the day the victim survived and we all go about our days just waiting on the next call out. I'm 36 now I joined at 18 I don't regret any of it. I'd do it all over again.

I come from a family full of first responders and while I’m not one myself, this song is so powerful and always makes me wonder how my brother and sister who are first responders are really coping. They often use humor as a coping mechanism but some of the stories they’ve told me, I just can’t imagine. And I’m sure there are plenty more they don’t know how to share. With an uncle who’s a former beat cop and current detective and an aunt who’s an er nurse to my grandmother who was an RN in an ER for 30+ years and my grandfather who was a police officer and then a detective and a captain in his 40+ year career, to my older brother being a firefighter and his wife being an ER nurse and my older sister being an EMT and her husband being a firefighter, we are a family full of first responders and medical professionals and I can never fully comprehend what my family members go through, but as someone on the sidelines, there have been days I fear for their safety myself, it’s tough for all parties, and this song means a lot. And so does your respect. I’ve only just found your channel but your appreciation for first responders means a lot more than you might think, though I think these comments have shown you how much everyone appreciates what you have to say, so thank you

I was a firefighter/paramedic... For 20 years. From the time I was 18...my first call I saw my Chief get set on fire he died a week later...I lost 3 paramedic coworkers....one of which was my partner and best friend to suicide....I have dealt with PTSD for many years....to anyone else dealing with the nightmares...the memories...the flash backs......you are not alone....reach out....I went to counceling for 2 years and have came close to suicide myself to make the nightmares stop...to end the sleepless nights... Like my councilor said..Dont dwell on the bad...think of the good you have done...the lives you saved....it far out weighs the bad....Stay safe brothers and sisters....

We have a first responder in the family. At one point they were called to an accident scene not far from the house. It was one of the neighbors teenage daughter and her future sil. They knew on sight there was nothing to do but pull out the tarp thing to put over the car. So they did so and kept their brother/fiance from trying to run on scene. Both girls were clearly gone. Then, once the scene was cleared, had to go home to their own child and tell them one of their best friends was gone. A kid that spent time growing up and playing with their own.

The dad of my buddy was or is (I'm not entirely sure) a volunterey fireman. Those are pretty common especially in rural areas here in Germany. He told they once got a call that a farmer was stuck in the mower on his tractor. Apparently the farmer tried to fix something and it grapped him and pulled him in. Pretty sure that scene wasn't pretty to look at.

My uncle was a cop (retired) and a buddy of mine is now. The job is mostly boring from what I’ve heard, but the extremes are very difficult; especially when it’s your community.
In war you can disassociate that place, and those people, to an extent. First responders are protecting and helping their neighbors, that’s a tough cookie.
