My professor really assigned us a book review, a final paper and a final project and thought that was acceptable. As if I don't have other classes and finals to prep for.
"A group project DURING a pandemic" LITERALLY WHAT I'VE BEEN SAYING. I ended up having to fly solo and just provided evidence that I did the whole damn thing myself. Some teachers are losing their MINDS.
Teachers: I know this is such a hard time for you guys Also Teachers: If you want to do the materials for this class you HAVE to go up to the library, even tho this is an online class
Group projects during pandemics are insane to me. Where did you get that idea? They shove the kids into a breakout room and tell them to put on cameras and talk. Its radio silence in those breakout rooms. Teachers are out of their minds.
@@nicoleonlysometimes824 or also some students don’t want to turn their cameras on because they’re embarrassed about their home being on camera. Not everyone has home offices or setups conducive for online learning 😕

As a tutor who has listened to students damn near break down over the stress of school in a pandemic, I want to fight some professors who *still* haven't adapted their classes for online and just add to stress.
Yeah, as a TA it is really surprising the amount of emails we get about people having panic attacks and depressive episodes. Thankfully they don’t get points deducted for late submissions.
Where I work they actually do get 10% reduction for submissions 24 hrs after the deadline.... I feel for them but I’m just a TA trying to keep my job during a financial crisis as well
As a white person, I didn't realize how voicing my disappointment in white people comes off as trying to separate myself from the while priviledge I have. I'm glad I know this now and will change the way I talk about these issues.
I get the urge, I have the instinct to do the same when I see the cishets acting a fool 😒 but unless I’m saying that to a friend on their personal page, I take that energy and direct to the people participating in the bigotry. Its like when people tell me that their parents don’t want them to date black people and I’m like.......okay? What you want me to do with that info? Now I’m side eyeing you, you know? But listening to black women will set you straight you on the right path 💖
it aint that serious, but it's kind of the case. basically what ayanna said, though i'd add: it's fine to voice disappointment in people of your group to that group, and if you do it when you're just riffing with a black friend or w/e that's between ya'll there's nothing wrong with that. it's more when you come up to black people and are like 'oh MAN don't white people suck so much haha' that it gets old. just treat us like normal, and when we wanna shittalk racist white people then by all means that's the time to do your thing. also wanna add: you should also still try to actively use your whiteness to directly fight racism with other white people. a lot of baby progressives talk in such a way that can seem paralyzing to white people, but you need to not do that. fight and reform racist white people and work with black and brown people to make better futures. that's the way homie.
Unfortunately I genuinely distrust white people even though I'm white, but that's because I'm an immigrant and before I learned to speak English I had white people calling me dumb and making fun of me and being xenophobic in general (telling me to go back to my own country etc) so I feel a bit weird now that they're all nice to me now that I can speak English with almost no accent lol. It feels really creepy to me, like it's a fake acceptance. Obviously I can tell that I have white privilege still even though in an immigrant (otherwise they wouldn't treat me so nicely now) but I do worry how it might come off if I complain since some people might think it's more performative. I tend to just not voice my feelings around people I don't know too well since they wouldn't know the context. :)
@@ayannabranchcomb7535 @Malum thank you both for your insight! ❤ I will continue to use my whiteness to speak out against injustice. I always want to listen and figure out how to be the best type of support system. Even just being in roller skating groups has really opened my eyes to how much racism is still alive and well in the US and it's heartbreaking.
It was strange how the girl who made the renagade wasn't in the interview or even credited. I don't think she was mentioned either which is a pretty rude thing to do since her dance was THE MOST popular dance on TikTok. Give black people the credit they deserve
I HATE that attendance is mandatory in a pandemic. And teachers have no compassion about it. Most of us are depressed, burnt out, have family members and friends dying but they taking a whole letter grade off for not attending. Also having to turn on your camera or else they don’t count you in attendance is stupid.
I had the wildest experience with a teacher where she was threatening a grade for not putting on cameras. But then she ACTUALLY looked it up and saw a bunch of studies on how it doesn’t matter, and can encourage participation through privacy and she finally shut up about it. I was shocked she could make herself aware life that
Facts. I could’ve had a whole hour extra to sleep if they didn’t force me to turn my camera on. I was getting fully dressed to never even leave my house.
In my school my physics teacher be making it a bit extra because if we don’t turn our cameras on he would tell us he’ll call our parents during the class or would change our grade because cameras are severely important one time it was a bit different and he called the principal into the zoom and we had to sit through a 15 minute lecture of why turning our cameras on is part of learning and getting good grades.
With tiktok though I couldn’t tell you who made pretty much any dance or trend on there. I think that is an issue, because the basis of the app is trends and ‘copying’
@@siobhanmcshanehill895 i feel like its an issue easily remedied by tagging who you got it from. If everyones tagging the OC then it’ll be common knowledge. Or at least easier to find. None of this really became an issue until people started profiting and making whole ass careers off this app tho. When it was just musical.ly nobody worried about credit bc nobody was getting paid so it was just fun to hop on trends and mess around. But once money and opportunities come into play then yeah, houston we got a problem
For my psychology final my professor is making us have a group discussion about how we feel about George Floyd's case. She wants me to sit in a group with the product of known pro-cop trumpies as a black man and talk about George Floyd. Pray for me.

I remember my mom telling me I almost gotten held back in kindergarten because I didn’t talk in class. I had the grades but since I wasn’t social they were willing to hold me back a whole grade. Thankfully my mom wasn’t for the bs.
I feel lucky they didn't try the same mess with me, I basically didn't speak in class from 1st grade to 12th...but I also got straight A's so I'm sure my mom woulda straight up bullied them if they tried anything 💀
Thank God I grew up getting braids for special events. My mom and I had them at her wedding and I always get them before vacation and might be wearing them at my graduation. Not sure why anyone wouldn’t think they’re classy they can be worn to fit any style
Braids are my summertime treat and I love ittttt. It gives me freedom, it gives me versatility for looks with minimal effort, it gives me beach in the am club in the pm. I’m so excited for my braids this year
I got braids for my new vaca and usually always get them summertime or anytime I go on vacations as well. I’ll probably even wear them for my graduation as well-or at least this ‘prom’ I’m having. Love them and easy way to not permanently get colors that would otherwise kill my hair 😂
Also can we talk about how ableist participation points are... like 1. for mental health i have anxiety and i don't always wanna talk in class, 2. I have several chronic illnesses that make it so sometimes i can't go to class or it just makes it 10x harder. CMON PEOPLE WHY ARE THEY STILL A THING
I hate that shit. It bothers me as an able bodied woman because sometimes I simply have nothing to say. Can’t imagine how difficult it is for people who already struggle with social interactions. ESPECIALLY in college like bro grade my tests and assignments and move around
They really be saying: we care about mental health take a break, whilst simultaneously telling us to "try harder" and "your just being lazy". They dont care about anyone, especially not black people's mental health because mine is in the fucking gutter
Rest in peace Ma'Khia, Adam, Daunte who were all gone too young. Within the span of 2 weeks by the hands of the supposed "protection" we got going on in this country.

I’m so glad I’m not in school for this, because I had AT MOST 1 assignment a week per class. Most classes were mid terms and finals and a damn research paper
The participation point thing is literally ableist, there are people who deal with different social anxieties and autisms that don’t allow you to be outspoken.
Like I dont know if its neurodivergency, anxiety, or both but I struggle with talking due to not wanting to and feeling like I have to force it then getting anxious about how I sound so having to talk in class is hell on earth for me
Yup. Plus, what if the topic under discussion itself is trauma-related. You think I'm going to freely and happily participate in a class chat about whether sexual assault is real or not? Pass, it's hard enough to just sit there and listen to people spout bigotry for an hour for points. AND, who gets the opportunity to speak (and be listened to) is down to the lecturer's own biases. Broken, broken system.
I feel like professors now that we're having online classes just assume we have so much more time and that their class is the only we take.. I try to be comprehensive cause I'm studying to be a teacher myself but jfc my mental health has gone on a nose dive bc of that.. Of course, this coming from Brazil, so my experience may be different from yours.. Just tired tbh
I am studying to be a teacher here in the US and it’s the same thing! The whole pandemic the professors have acted like we had nothing better to do except work for their classes
especially with these groups projects they should just stop giving those cause thats so stressful especially when you get people that won't work at all
@@AikiraBeats especially since I’m studying to be a teacher, it sticks out to me how lazy the professors are being when it comes to lesson planning online. They place us in breakout rooms and have us discuss the textbook pages and then just assign projects. There’s no instruction, no teacher provided notes or lectures, nothing. They’re basically just facilitating us doing all of the work and not doing any teaching and it’s so frustrating because we pay so much in tuition
As someone with autism and selective mutism, this class discussion participation grade is really harmful. Especially for those who aren't diagnosed yet, or have other social disabilities unaccounted for.
I'm not diagnosed but I do struggle with communication and socialization sometimes that seems rlly similar to autism or anxiety and stuff like that is hell on earth bc I have to force myself thru it. I only feel like talking when it's out of my own will and under certain conditions, group discussions aren't included in that
I have ADHD and the struggle is real. I have to sit in front of the entire class (preferably facing the teacher's desk - that's the only way I can remain focused and not fidget a lot) and would rather have little discussions with them about the topics casually, than to raise my hand and voice whatever crap I'm trying to explain in front of the rest of my classmates. That method worked wonderfully for years and years until we got stuck with online classes, where I've just failed miserably.
@@lesbiangoddess290 I feel that this can also be put in the "bad accomodations or no accomodations at all" in the discussion about how the school system is ableist. they don't even try to provide alternate ways for students to communicate. like so many kids would have perfect participation grades if there were alternate ways to communicate, like typing, text to speech, or even just writing down on a white board. Like I feel the problem isn't the participation grade in of itself (as in the idea) but the fact that it forces students to speak and to speak vocally. (by this I mean the execution is absolutely horrible in most circumstances).
@@peiithos there are some cases where I dont or feel like i cant speak (not a selective mute) and they still force me to speak and pick people at random. 🙄

Same! UA-cam now lacks entertaining channel so much that I have to wait for the inconsistent good ones and see all the consistent boring ones in my trending or recommended page
As someone who just finished being a Teachers Assistant, I realized that zoom was helping ALOT of shy students participate. More students were open to using the chat feature of zoom. But my university is opening up this coming fall, so I know participation is gonna drop so hard and it's gonna affect ppls grades. Plus, who's tryna walk across a huge campus to get to class...with zoom u can get up 2 minutes before class n just be there.
that’s really interesting, as a student i feel exactly the opposite! i talk plenty in in-person classes, but in zoom classes i find myself overthinking everything.
for me personally i don't participate much in class either way, but i do think i perform better when i'm at school because there are less distractions. it's way too hard for me to do work at home so the pandemic really fucked me over lol
Also a TA here and I made it a point to tell students using chat counts as participating and they used it so much more than talking. This works especially well in large lectures. They also had great discussions related to class.
tiktok is a disgusting app. it’s the fact that when i follow my favorite black creators i rarely see them on my fyp again. ridiculous. i follow only a few white creators and you best believe they flood my fyp. i’ve had to resort to strictly using the filter that allows me to only watch creators i follow which really sucks because i’m always looking for new creators to watch
it's also the fact that when they do show up it's usually a video with a heavy topic, like black trauma. I had to get off the app because everytime I'd get variety in my fyp I'd get loads of just different kinds of videos that went from heavy and heart crushing to lighthearted and fun and the transition was way too much for me to handle.

School during the pandemic has gone to hell. It’s like the teachers are actively trying to make students lives worse and then they have the gall to ask how we are. In the UK we usually have a final exam paper or two for each subject that ends up equalling our grades. The government however, thought it would be better to give students a multitude of exams that pan the whole year that end up being students final grades. One time a teacher sat for FIFTEEN WHOLE MINUTES, waiting for students to unmute with the chat completely off. Fifteen whole ass minutes. Waiting for 8th graders to unmute and talk vocally. Just turn on the damn chat. Participation points make me want to punch holes in walls. I dont want to raise my hand. More than half this class has some form of social anxiety and the teacher wants us to take a chance to embarass ourselves? Are teachers just stupid? Want to call on them just to have them not know and get embarassed in front of more than 20 people? Ive met 2 teachers with at least 0.1 braincell and they still pulled this bs. Group projects. On zoom/during a pandemic. No one wants to be around people god damnit, online or not. The breakout rooms, complete silence. Chat almost completely dead and all the work is on one maybe two people. Ugh, that damn "double homicide" shit has bothered me since I first saw it. And people were in the comments like "well she did it to herself" and "why is she crying? She killed it" like wtf if wrong with y'all. Like knowing her storyline is heartbreaking, but even if we didn't it's still not a joking matter. People lack morals nowadays.

But listening to black women will set you straight you on the right path 💖
amanda’s comment sometimes set off red flags but ya...
it aint that serious, but it's kind of the case. basically what ayanna said, though i'd add: it's fine to voice disappointment in people of your group to that group, and if you do it when you're just riffing with a black friend or w/e that's between ya'll there's nothing wrong with that. it's more when you come up to black people and are like 'oh MAN don't white people suck so much haha' that it gets old. just treat us like normal, and when we wanna shittalk racist white people then by all means that's the time to do your thing.
also wanna add: you should also still try to actively use your whiteness to directly fight racism with other white people. a lot of baby progressives talk in such a way that can seem paralyzing to white people, but you need to not do that. fight and reform racist white people and work with black and brown people to make better futures. that's the way homie.

I HATE that attendance is mandatory in a pandemic. And teachers have no compassion about it. Most of us are depressed, burnt out, have family members and friends dying but they taking a whole letter grade off for not attending. Also having to turn on your camera or else they don’t count you in attendance is stupid.
plus turning on ur camera contributes to global warming
I had the wildest experience with a teacher where she was threatening a grade for not putting on cameras. But then she ACTUALLY looked it up and saw a bunch of studies on how it doesn’t matter, and can encourage participation through privacy and she finally shut up about it. I was shocked she could make herself aware life that
There should be a private policy to not enforce your camera on unless they so desperately need it for an exam 🙄
I'll never forget the amount of people who said that Jaliah didn't deserve credit for her dance...

especially with these groups projects they should just stop giving those cause thats so stressful especially when you get people that won't work at all
@@AikiraBeats especially since I’m studying to be a teacher, it sticks out to me how lazy the professors are being when it comes to lesson planning online.
That rule is just incredibly ableist. Actually the entire education system is ableist but that's another conversation
I remember back in middle school my health teacher gave me 50 because I didn’t participate. This is the same teacher who yelled at me for getting up to sharpen a pencil the year before 🙃
I had an uppity art teacher in middle school who dropped my grade from an A to a B because I refused to socialize with my bullies. He literally watched them bully me daily and told my mom during a parent teacher conference that I lost points for being anti social 🙃

The professors won't because they are making the underpaid, just-as-burnt-out grad TAs do the hard work

Schools keep thinking “well if we’re harder, they’ll be better” and then everyone fails but the 3 people who can run on fumes or have someone else do it for them. Online options changed my life this year but I feel lucky I don’t have your teachers.
Some of us took part of the exams for our final grades in the first month of being back. So instead of kids taking six, seven or however many exams usually, they’ll have to take twenty or thirty. I dropped out because of how bad my mental health got and all they told me was I’d have no chance of a future.
twenty to thirty exams during a pandemic? that's fucking inhumane.
Sis! I’m getting the final exams in the next two weeks from now! When I just did one last week! Kmt UK schools
ughhhh yes😭 like at first having our exams cancelled seemed nice but the overload on exams is really messing with my mental health
The way TikTok is showing me Black trauma instead of the Black people I've been following and shows me videos of a specific creator crying instead of him opening cute animal plushies... like :/
even as a white person when I followed more black ppl to make my fyp less white, I kept getting black trauma instead of their actual content and it was too much for me so I've stopped using the app. Like I'd get a happy, light hearted video then a video of just black trauma and the transition between that was so harsh. It was too much for me so I can't even imagine how others feel with their fyp doing that
That's why I stopped using tik tok it was too depressing

Participation points make me so mad. Im a person who's recently learned how much I despise speaking vocally. I will write, type, text to speech, anything else. Yet it has to be my voice. Every time a teacher thinks shutting off the chat for no reason is a good idea to boost student participation, I take a deep breath in my head and pray to my inner self that I have the patience to sit through every grueling second of silence as the teacher wonders why no one unmutes.
How the hell do they get jobs working with kids then not make any effort to understand how kids think. And then they randomly call people. Ever consider people have reasons they dont want to talk? Want to call on them just to have them not know and get embarassed in front of more than 20 people? Ive met 2 teachers with at least 0.1 braincell and they still pulled this bs.
Group projects. On zoom/during a pandemic. No one wants to be around people god damnit, online or not. The breakout rooms, complete silence. Chat almost completely dead and all the work is on one maybe two people. We are exhausted. Yes, teachers are tired too, it's like when they say "sorry ive been in class all day" ...what do you think we were doing? Crying in the bathroom stall? because thats what I feel like doing. I get migraines and headaches. I dont want to do group projects with a damn migraine. I want to SLEEP. I am EXHAUSTED. I am TIRED of school. NONE of these kids want to work together if its with STRANGERS. These kids dont even want to BE HERE. Ive cried with my camera off. Ive CRIED in class because I was so stressed. I felt fucking stupid because I didnt understand ONE problem. When I asked the teacher for help? Complete silence. "Check your resource notebook" MISS I WAS ABSENT? I DONT UNDERSTAND THAT EITHER?? These teachers are losing their damn minds.
This felt like a mental breakdown. I sincerely hope you are doing okay and if not hopefully this nightmare will be over soon. ❤️❤️
sorry but you’re gonna have to get over it.
you’ll eventually realize that most people don’t care what your voice sounds like
I can't even imagine doing 8th grade online. I'm so sorry you're going through this
@@alxandro5504 can you not tell me to basically suck it up? you probably read my whole comment right? I mentioned being in 8th grade. That means I'm a child. Not even in highschool yet. And I've already cried in class. I've already gotten migraines and headaches. I've been sucking it up all this time, what else can I do? Cry in class more? Complain about being in constant fucking agony to my teachers? Fail my classes and have my situation get worse? And my struggles aren't scarce either. My issues are common. Most people I know have had similar or sometimes even worse experiences. I don't want to get over it. I'm fucking suffering in complete silence and the school knows this because I am not alone in that. I can't just 'get over' the shit school has done to my mental wellbeing

It just baffles me how so many organizations and companies think that black people, or people of color in general, are not marketable or shouldn't be "the face" of a brand. They always push the same types of people and it's just plain sad because I want the opportunity to see people with actual talent get the overpush of media and that half of these famous tiktokers have gotten.
Not wanting to talk as the only black person at a PWI is SO real
I’m amazed how Amanda can be a full time student at one of the best schools in California, a STEM major, UA-camr/content creator and still have time to complete a book in 2 days for fun! I specifically get box braids or cornrows for school dances, graduations, school concerts, sweet sixteens, etc. I think braids are formal as hell, since I get extra length and I can do extra styles with it. Braids = formal in my head. It's a shame that people feel otherwise
The fact that I have been seeing people DEFEND the police officers when Ma´Ḱhia was murdered is really making me question all human beings at this point.

I really relate with the participation points. Verbal communication is hell for me and being able to type in the chat has been a godsend. It's annoying (and lowkey ableist) when professors turn the text chat off.
YES EXACTLY! Like I recently found out I dont like speaking vocally unless its under certain conditions, plus I get really anxious around how I sound which makes it even harder to talk. When the chat is turned off I get so genuinely mad because they took away the only form of communication Im comfortable with especially on zoom. I completely agree on the fact that it is annoying and kinda ableist, that communication option should be available.
they can turn off text chat?? wtf??? also i hate break out sessions. utter waste of class time
@@christinem8799 Yeah, I had a professor turn it off once and it got on my nerves so much.
Amanda saying people who have periods cleared my skin 😌 everything being said is pure facts
That's because people have made it cool to not be empathic. They think its funny to make fun of peoples trauma and pass it off as dark humor. Like no your a bully, if your the only one laughing your a bully.
Would add onto that cause multiple people can laugh and it would still be bullying that person
It’s so true because a lot of these people you don’t even know that well so when they joke about something traumatic to you it only comes off as mean. I don’t understand how we have forgotten about that kind of thing tbh?

the participation points thing at the beginning really struck a nerve with me because i have a stutter (it’s a neurological thing i’ve probably had since i was born) and i would NEVER talk in class because i didn’t want to make myself a target to assholes and my teachers would make a big fuss about it.
i’m doing all the work, i have an A in the class, and i don’t cheat on tests and quizzes but ME, a singular person in a class full of like 25 people, not answering questions to protect MYSELF is a problem?
can i just say....black people created basically everything and get no credit 😭😭😭 y’all are literally the blueprint for SO many things and i almost NEVER see any of the credit ever given, and it’s getting worse because of social media.
It happens to Asians as well. We need to ban together against the oppressors.
black people basically created american art but you get called an sjw for acknowledging this fact
@@emilyau8023 yeah i think colonization and imperialism has taken things from all minorities and made it mainstream. black america is unique in that their entire identities are marketed and commodified for consumption of non black people. being a black person existing is “ghetto”, but when non black people emulate that it’s a ticket to fame. this isn’t to discredit any experiences as i myself am latine, but to highlight the difference in the black experience across westernized nations.
@@honeysana672 I understand what you're saying. I just want to spread the Asian experience as well because there was an Exclusion Act and Japanese Internment Camps and now Asian hate is increasing. We were portrayed as racist cartoon characters like other POC and called slurs and we lack representation in the media. But, even worse is that we are used by the Whites to set an example to the POC community saying nonsensical things like POC should be more like the Asians. I want us all to come together and realize we need each other, so that the supremacists don't win.

I was like holy yikes even a suggestion of being latina or black causes this reaction of "ghetto".

(I just end up following them on IG to show more support)Oh and Amanda, i feel the pain with projects and exams for each class. I am stressed.
what bothered me this week...well, the fact some men thought making a national rape day would be a cute idea, the boyz protesting the super league, but not the racism in the European leagues, and finding out about the Amhara genocide, sterilization of Romani women that occurred in Czechoslovakia and lastly two words, Aafia Siddiqui.
Ugh, that damn "double homicide" shit has bothered me since I first saw it. And people were in the comments like "well she did it to herself" and "why is she crying? On the topic of exams our school insists that we have to come into school full time during exams in Ramadan disgusting. No study leave or anything
Also as a Brit, participation points sounds stupid
Furthmore, our teachers are marking these exams so even if you don’t come in they still know idk I hate it
