Phone calls require availability on both ends at the exact same moments. The feeling of imposing urgency with that experience makes it seem rude unless there’s a specific reason to communicate in such a way.

I have 7 people in my favorites on the iPhone - only from this people I would answer a call. And they know that a message (written) get a much bigger chance to be replied to then a voice message or a call.
Other unknown or even people in my contacts (reduced to 30+) are never answered. They also learned over the years that a message or email is the best way to contact me.
I will set up my iPhone 12 mini with similar 5 apps now.

I cut it from the roots and just got the apple watch and forgot about the phone. I'm only missing to take notes, but you can write and see task. You can take calls handsfree and after a month it feels more like a watch, the battery last all day even two days, I just wear it 24/7 and the wake up alarm is the most comfortable I've ever try.

My iPhone 12 mini is supported till 2027, if I recall correctly. After that, Hopefully another smaller, more capable minimal phone will have arrived on the scene. I use a “cgm” for managing diabetes and it requires a smartphone. I use my phone as a cycling computer/navigation tool and overall health, activity, and fitness tracker. If I can just work out solutions for these things, then ditching the Addictaphone would be more feasible. Any suggestions are welcome! 😊

For those who really have trouble with self control get a feature phone. Or get a cheap second phone, use a 20 character password and put the apps that want to avoid eg social media on there. You could only use a parental lock app and get someone to set a password and and set a screen time limit and times of the day. Many parents have thought about how to manage access for their kids. The same can be used for adults.
As for a simpler layout, another approach is just to use shortcuts on a screen.

Hello Tim, I found this video great . . . but I'm a Android user. Are there similar apps/widgets that can accomplish the same thing? ALSO . . . wouldn't you want to also put a phone widget in there or is that covered by the Messaging app. Presumably the calls would just come through normally, if you were called, right? Your side-hustle video is also very interesting, as I have been listening to Steve Dotto's videos (similar in content, but more related to introducing the tools and their use) . . . yes, time management (and initiative) is the key. Thanks again for your time and talents and wanting to share it with the rest of us.

Did this months ago with the same app, and for the very same reason. Lite phone is way overpriced so I stripped down the iPhone's interface and aligned my list to the right for one-hand use. That extra friction involved in getting to any other app through my library was enough to break the compulsion to always be on the stupid thing.

I find this home screen and deleting apps is enough friction for me to not use them. If you need something more hardcore, you could use an app like Opal to completely block access.

I bought a dumb phone (Cat s22 flip) which has access to apps like maps and spotify, which I wanted to keep, but since the screen is so small and hard to use, it would be a pain to scroll etc on it, thereby helping my screen addiction. It also looks different than the iPhone, so automatically will help me not reach for it. It was only $60.

I would need to keep Facebook. I don’t even use the social aspect of it. I have nothing on my page and don’t follow anyone. But I really like it bc events near me will pop up on my feed. Quite recently I’ve found concerts I’m interested in bc of it. I’d miss out on so many memories.

I really like this idea! Thank you for sharing! Technology is to help us, not hinder us, this is a good way to reduce unnecessary addictive habits of checking and burning time on smartphones. I struggle with this greatly as UA-cam is my weakness. I’m visually impaired and rely on technology to help me access my world, it allows me to see things I can’t see with just the aid of glasses, but I it’s also my entertainment, which has gotten out of hand.
