    Which ND filters are you using?

    • @swifted
      @swifted 4 роки тому +1

      Jeven Dovey Hey man i really want to get the moment VND. I was wondering if I were to get the 6-9 stop ND will that solve my issue for getting vignetting in the corners? I live in California, and i tend to shoot quite often on the brightest days. I was wondering if I were to get the 6-9 stop I wouldn’t need to crank the Nd all the way to get cross polarization?

    • @JevenDovey
      @JevenDovey  4 роки тому +4

      Yeah but the 6-9 will only work on super bright days. You still need the 2-5 for early in the morning or late in the day or if it’s cloudy. I live in California as well and I use both frequently. Switched to fixed ND filters today though.

      Currently only using a CPol filter as I don't use my DSLR for video. I do have fixed ND filters for my DJI drone though. Thanks to this video though, I WAS going to get a VND but will now buy a set of fixed NDs.

      Using the Moment VNDs on my larger lenses. Well, I just got them and still have to properly use them. Only used them for a few photos so far.
      Also got a nice Hoya VND for my Moment lenses and my (smaller) primes. I think that Hoya is around 1.3-8.7 stops or so. No hard stops and keeps on rotating which is the bit I like less about it.

      @@JevenDovey And you can stack those fixed ND's when you need more stops.

    Thanks for an amazing comparison. I bought PolarPro, Freewell, Syrp and some other variable NDs as I wanted to test how they work for my style of work. After days of testing, I'm keeping the Freewell even though I wanted to love the PolarPro. The problem with PolarPro is that it makes displays of phones and laptops yellow immediately when you start twisting the nd knob. The Freewell keeps the screens at their natural color.

    Totally agree. I have a 2-5 PolarPro, on a 24mm lens and have to be really careful going past 4 stops. Depending on the subject, cross polarisation can ruin the shot.

    Thanks, man, good info! I found a similar scenario when researching NDs for drones and now just carry three fixed NDs in my bag, but honestly I normally only need one or two. Same for the Sony a6400, two fixed NDs do the trick... Good Flying!

    Bought the 67mm Moment variable ND for my A6500 using a 10-18mm lens. Was very disappointed with the obvious cross polarisation. SOLUTION - Bought an 82mm version of the Moment ND and used a step up ring to fit to the 62mm lens thread. All traces of polarisation have now gone even with the 10-18mm wide Sony lens I'm currently using. Go big guys 👍

    As luck would have it, I just posted a video to my channel yesterday reviewing 8 solid neutral density filters to try and figure out which ones had the least amount of color cast and vignette. I ended up doing this review because -- like you -- I ruined a bunch of footage using a Tiffen variable ND. I arrived at the same conclusion you did -- it's far less stressful and predictable to use a solid ND for video and make adjustments to aperture/ISO on the camera rather than running the risk of ruining an entire day's worth of footage for the convenience of variable density.

    That's a surprisingly simple solution-- no VNDs. If I'm filming a wedding, and I'm outside in super bright light, I could grab a really strong ND... medium bright light or want to really open up my aperture, I could grab a medium strength ND, and then maybe I have one more weak ND. Then when I'm in between filters I just shoot at a slightly different aperture or ISO. Has anyone done this 3 ND method for live events as opposed to a VND?

    Was planning on ordering the K & F Concept variable filter, but you talked me out of getting a variable ND filter. Guess I'll order a single 16 1st (since I'm poor) ... and after using it a bit, will order a second one, possibly a 32. What would you suggest as a first ND and then a second (additional) ND filter? Thanks, Chuck : +) ...

    Is ND with CPL a good idea?
    If you have for instance 52mm lenses and use a bigger ND filter, like 82mm ND to get ride of cross polarization. Will this work? Besides that an one ND fits all lenses strategy will safe some money instead of buying separate NDs for different diameter lenses. Does this thinking make any sense?

    I am looking for a filter and after watching a ton of videos i came to the same conclusion.
    Just carry a 3 and 6 stop fixed nd and your covered.
    Your image will be well balanced without vignetting and cross polarization.
    You definitely have a case here.
    You could make a video on fixed nd solutions.
    A magnetic stackable fixed nd system could be a solution for many.

    Couldn't agree more. Ditch these pricey NDs and grab a few different strength inexpensive NDs. Since color shift shouldn't be an issue if you are white balancing your video you can easily pick up some pretty cheap NDs as long as they are made from quality optical glass. I paid around $30 a piece for the ones I use and saw very little change in sharpness vs some of the much more expensive ones from folks like Tiffen (BUT Tiffen does make some great filters that are very long lasting).
