      (A copy from answer on Instagram, so everyone with the same questions can read)
      Hi Chris, There are indeed a few things I would change. The two poles in the front are a bit in the way sometimes (or at least in my head) for dynamic moves. Which holds you back when climbing.
      I would like to have made it a bit more weather proof, and even indoors if I could, Belgian weather is not so nice. So it has deteriorated over the years, the boards are starting to show signs of rotting unfortunately. The back of the wall was protected later with plastic sheets. Which is definitely necessary. If you're local climate allows to be outdoors a lot, I would definitely build it again outdoors. Unfortunately during winter it's not used. But I liked the building process a lot. In the beginning it's really nice and you use it a lot and after a while i started to use it less, but that all depends on your motivation offcourse.

  • @davidlean8674
    @davidlean8674 5 років тому +5

    Nice video. I'd caution against embedding wood foundations directly into concrete. The moisture that travels thru the concrete encourages the wood to rot. Significantly reducing the lifespan of the structure.
    Consider using a steel post support. eg: www.bunnings.com.au/uni-pier-adjustable-screw-top-head-with-antcap-to-suit-unipier-75-x-75-posts_p0028539
    Or at least treat the timber with a moisture barrier, eg: Tar \ Bitumen &/or choose a timber with a high Rot Resistance rating.

    • @84v7climbers7

      It's easier to put the plywood on first. Each hold is at least 1lb + the weight of the bolt. So a minimum of 50 holds on a 3/4" plywood could be close to 100lbs.

  • @oliviabaklaton4552
    @oliviabaklaton4552 7 років тому +4

    Danger: wood should not be in direct contact with concrete/beton: the beton always attracts the moisture out of the earth/atmosphere and gives it to the wood. The wood starts to rot. Do not be surprised if after about 5-10 years the construction will fall together.

    what kinda wood did you use? what kind of life expectancy do you think this wood/tnuts have in the outdoors? I would build one but I am thinking about the wear and tear and one day ill be holding onto it and it snaps off or something bad like that.

    • @maartenblomme5311
      @maartenblomme5311  8 років тому

      +SooperBeez I used concrecteplex plywood (I don't know if that's the correct term). I haven't really thought about the life expectancy, but I hope it lasts as long as possible. Recently I added a corrugated sheet(again not sure about the term), to prevent water getting inside the wood. The t-nuts are from rustfree steel, not zincplated, I think these last longer. I think that there must go something terribly wrong before a hold snaps off or something like that. The only disadvantage of using the concreteplex plywood, is that it is very slippery, so the holds rotate easily if you don't put an extra screw in the holds or at the side of the holds.

      You can choose most of the dimensions of the frame, for the sides you see at 1:15 it's imortant that the small beam (where the kickboard will be placed) is measured 3,66 meters from the top along the beam (+ more or less thickness of the boards you use). The placement of the big pole you can choose. Just make sure you don't place them completly at the top, because this would make installing the cross-beam harder. I hope this answers your question. Hi Maarten! This looks great! I'm thinking of doing the same thing. But I have a question about the t-nut spacing...Is it correct that the spacing is not the same for all the t-nuts vertically? From the bottom to the first row on a sheet is 10cm and to the top it is 12cm. So when the sheets of plywood are placed on top of each other there is a spacing of 22cm. While the spacing between the rest is 20cm.Or am I wrong about this?

    • @maartenblomme5311
      @maartenblomme5311  9 років тому

      Hi Niels! I think you are correct about the 22 cm spacing at the transition of two sheets and the 20 cm spacing between all the other T-nuts. I had the same issue when building the wall, the building instructions on the website of moonclimbing aren't clear about it.

    • @niels1217

      +Maarten Blomme So did you keep it this way or did you change it to 20cm? Also I was wondering what do you do when it's raining? Just leave the holds outside? And what will you do when it's winter and freezing?

    • @maartenblomme5311
      @maartenblomme5311  9 років тому

      +Niels Defesche I kept the 22 cm spacing, because otherwise every sheet had to be made differently. I leave the holds on because it took a lot of time putting them on in the correct way. I'm planning to add a corrugated sheet on the back, to prevent water seeping into the drill holes. I'm not really sure what I'm going to do this winter, it will depend on how much I will be climbing on it.

      +Niels Defesche It more Ben Moon's design than mine, but I'm glad you like it. :)

      +Maarten Blomme when you are using it for support or load bearing applications its best to have it properly mixed prior to pouring. In the long run the better the mix the better the cure the better the load bearing strength. Not to piss on any of the video, just my engineering ocd

      I've just recently become hooked on a local indoor gym. Not much experience. But find myself wanting to build some off the wall set ups in the back yard. Almost ordered some outdoor pit foam, then took a step back to think
