This lecture is part of a series of lectures which covered the evolution of Islamic political, social and economic thought as the world of Islam countered the expansion of the imperial powers into Muslim lands, and the attendant changes and disruptions which came in their wake. They were part of a novel one year post graduate course on the History of Modern Islamic Thought which was given in 1999-2000 at the Islamic College for Advanced Studies in London.
