Just another something to distract from the education system. I've spent more time looking up how to format a paper for a non-english class then focusing on the teachings of the class. Here is a fact. No idea is truly original. Thank you for explaining it!!!
So true. I hate the little nuances like capping the first letter but not the others in a title except for proper nouns; using "and" verse using ampersand, etc. It's just too much.
Amen. I’m a fan of credit where credit is due, but come on. If I gave you enough information to find the source and verify my accuracy, what value does all this minutiae add to my education, or the collective conversation? Obnoxious. I wrote my essay in 45 minutes and I’ve been obsessing about these stupid citations for just as long. Surely the meat of my ideas is more worthwhile?
@@lngwstx Personally, I don't think the comment was directed at you, and if it were, then it should really be directed at APA. They're the ones with whom I have the issue. So, for me, my nuances lie with APA
God bless you Dr. I have been struggling with my teacher and her lack of teaching me APA formatting with citations and references. This video was extremely helpful and made citations very clear for me while writing my essay!
I have written 3 books not on a professional level, It's my intention to write professional level and without a shadow of a doubt I will be using APA because it is very helpful. thanks to the thoughtful person who made this video.
Ben thanks for a GREAT Video for Citations and References. I have searched high and low for an instructional video for my Graduate Classes and yours is awesome. Thanks Again Dr. Keith Pratt, Author and Online Professor
Yea. It's such a joke how many lecturers and tutors at University level think they can get away with an attitude of "you are not in high school now I am not holding your hand". Not asking for my hand to be held I am asking for the person who is getting paid damn well to do their job properly....
Very helpful to avoid plagiarism. Very good reference for citation of textbooks, published materials and other sources. Thanks for APA style presentation.
still a bit confused but very useful information. it definitely helps a lot. I already learned so much from this video. i guess little bit of practice makes it perfect.
i actually thanks for this tutorial for free becuase i doing a Apa format but i didnt how to do the step by step then i granted to look this to learn more
This was well explained, the comparisons very useful (journal vs text), good visuals. I would have liked to see the "walk through" on how you would then take several examples of citations in a basic academic paper APA style, and list them into the reference page. It would also be helpful to see how to cite a webinar and website in text and reference page. Thanks so much for posting this tutorial, I have not written a paper in 23 years and needed some support and help for my assignment due in 2 days!
Mr. Phillips this is a good start, but these references are easily used in Microsoft Word Citations and Bibliography (Reference tab), you simply fill in the information under the book or journal. The harder APA references are for videos, library sources, and websites. I get my errors from video references.
The References tools are fairly reliable for formatting print references (except for line spacing) but not necessarily for electronic references. You still need to have a good grasp of style requirements so you can catch mistakes that Word makes. Microsoft is not going to update their software whenever APA or MLA makes a change. But when starting a new document you can search for an APA template. Word 2016 returns 2. "Trust, but verify." Ronald Reagan
5:10 Whenever you change, add or delete any single word or even a letter, you need to clearly indicate it. In the video, the very first letter of the quote becomes lowercase in citation, so the it should have been "[F]or a situational ... ".
I always follow APA 6.07 in this case ("Changes from the source requiring no explanation"). The manual states, "The first letter of the first word in a quotation may be changed to an uppercase or a lowercase letter" (p. 172). Since the heading of this section indicates "requiring no explanation," I think the brackets are not needed.
Very helpful, thank you. It begs me to ask though, who invented APA?, and what made them think they have the gaul to implement so many quirky rules, there's simply no need for it.
In 6.04 of the APA manual to put a page number when paraphrasing, can you explain why that is there? This is why APA is so confusing; it contradicts itself.
bruh, everything we learn is someone else's ideas, even when I come up with an idea, someone else had also come up with it, therefore anything i right surely is not my own; wouldn't an essay just be one big ass citation?
As an aspiring screenwriter, whenever I come up with my own ideas for a narrative, I sometimes strongly refuse to believe that someone else has already thought of it. The impression of having invented something or originated an idea gives you the feeling of honor, and the possibility of another individual sharing that idea can be despicable. However, when it comes to writing essays, I'm on the same page as you, since I despise the responsibility of citing sources in APA format. There have been times when I felt that I'd getting deduction in the score or even failing the course is more preferable than doing that. That's how excruciating it is.

The American Psychological Association invented it. They use it to document things in the science field. In fact, that's what the APA stands for! :)
Thank u so much really very helpful
