@@catcalvin I honestly don't remember that but comic book canon is different from film canon. If we went by comic canon the Dark Phoenix should have fire powers, be able to turn any object or living organism into solid gold and devour entire stars systems and planets, Wanda Maximoff and Quicksilver should be Magneto's children and Mystique and Charles should never have gotten their freak on in X-Men: First Class.
This was also the only movie of the series to have all five of the original X-men students as characters: Angel, Beast, Cyclops, Iceman, and Jean Grey.
16:45 The interesting thing about Charles and Erik's relationship, is they kind of have this old divorced couple dynamic in a lot of the media they appear in. It has brought some speculation of them possibly being lovers among a good chunk of X-Men fans, but in everything official (thus far), their relationship has at least been left to interpretation. In terms of movies and TV, you can see the "left to interpretation" dynamic a lot in X-Men First-Class, X-Men: The Animated Series, and X-Men '97.
In the international human rights course I took back in college, we talked about people targeted for rights abuses in terms of “immutable characteristics.” Sexual preference, gender identity, race, faith, nationality, these and more are all immutable characteristics. They may be plainly visible, or they may not be, but they are a core part of a person’s being they cannot simply “stop” or “be cured of” or “hide” no matter how much they might even want to. In this way mutants are a great metaphor. Some, it’s plainly visible they’re different, they couldn’t hide it. The rest, it may not be as easy to see who they are, but they can’t hide it either. It’s a part of them. Without exception, everyone has immutable characteristics of their own, and they have every right to express those characteristics regardless of the subjective judgment of others. And nobody should be deprived of their fundamental rights, for any reason, but especially not simply for being who they are. As the movie shows us, there are no “cures” and we should not need or want them, because we are not problems to be solved, we are people. People ought to treat people with tolerance and respect, universally, without discrimination on the basis of the immutable characteristics of their beings. Suffice it to say in light of all that rambling about the themes up above, even though this is one of the less beloved X-Men films, I kinda love it.
There's a mutant who's power is to randomly blow up,and in his sleep he killed a neighborhood. So yeah we need a cure. No way similar at all to race or sexuality
@@Mercurial_Phoenix I disagree. X-Men '97 works amazingly as its own soft reboot, with most viewers being people who have never watched the original series. And these were people who never watched the original series or those who did but forgot what happened. X-Men '97 is designed for an audience that might not be familiar with the original series, especially since a lot of people never saw the show or the "actual" Season 5 ending. He though that the studio would wait on him, but they decided to push on with a new director, Brett Ratner. That's why Cyclops dies so early into the film resulting in another Wolverine centric film. Then there were a bunch of characters thrown in who were villians instead of their usual heroic depictions, and/or just seemed to be there to give parts to the director's friends... And of course, this is an adaptation of the Dark Phoenix Saga, which is one of if not the sacred cow for the X-Men comics. The main problem with this film is that they tried to do the Dark Phoenix Saga and the whole mutant cure plot in the same film and it got convoluted. They should have focused only on the Dark Phoenix as it's the most iconic and emotionally charged saga from the comics and left the cure stuff out entirely or at the very least made it less of a major plot point. Also, some of the dialogue felt a bit rushed at times. The highlights were definitely the scenes with the Dark Phoenix, Charles, Magneto and Wolverine, the rest was all a bit average compared to the previous films.
I think you got swept up in the emotions of seeing characters die etc. To me that sort of thing was done for cheap "thrills". This was a hack job of a movie that has some beloved characters.
I hated this movie when it came out. The first two are so good, both from the same director. This third one changed writers amd directors. I thought it lost everything that was good about the originals.
The "cure" really destroys the allegory of the entire series, especially since it worked. Irl there have been plenty of "cures" for race, sexuality and neurodivergence but interestingly they never work 🤔🤔 If there has to be a "cure" in x-men stories it should be like a lobotomy, where it "fixes the issue" by destroying the person. It would make the metaphor so much clearer and work better since a lot of people still finish x-men stories and somehow agree with the anti-mutant ideas. I think x-men works best as a disability/neurodivergence and mental illness metaphor because it can be visible and invisible, with Charles being the most obvious nod to both
