I dont think you will lose money. Pokemon investing below msrp is about as low risk as you can get, but the same dollar amount will almost certainly outpreform if put in lost origin. People open expensive boxes to chase expensive cards. The giratina is the reason it will do so well. Just because battle styles was the first, doesnt mean its the best. Back and white was the first full art, and its the worst in the block. Sun and moon base was the first rainbow, also worst in the block. People dont seem to value the "historical" aspect as much as they do the dollar amounts, for better or worse.

Personally, yes I think it is. Other than the sleeping tyranitar, what card would people want from this set? I just can’t see it being desirable. There’s no big chase popular Pokémon.

I am relatively new to pokemon investing, after being gone for about 20 years from pokemon gold/crystal and ruby. but all i've seen since i've watched is "battle styles sucks". so i'll be curious to see how this works out for you!

Well I got lucky on Skies and it was very easy to like, this set is really easy to hate or ignore entirely. It makes it a risky play.. I’m not even that big a fan of the alternate arts in this set myself but I won’t discount how cool they look or the fact that the chase cards also have decent value and this set even being lackluster still has a place in everyone’s collections regarding booster box collections from this era 😎
Silver Tempest is super underrated. People are sleeping on it because it's still available through the Pokemon Center. Once it sells out, the fomo will hit hard. That Lugia V is top-tier, and reminds me of the Shining Gyarados card from Neo. It's probably a top 3 or 4 box of the SWSH era.
It’s tough to hinge all the value on one card but I totally agree amazing art and fomo will set in. I got 2 cases contemplating another just seems like a whole lot of risk. Investing isn’t collecting either I don’t care what people say, collecting comes from the heart and passion and investing is all numbers. It’s getting weirder in this hobby every day. 🤷🏻♀️

Weirdly Lost Origin is up to £200 in the UK but we still have Fusion and Chilling on the Pokémon Centre. Silver Tempest is sold out on the Pokémon Centre but still below retail. The market is weird.

I think the fact that you can still get it fairly cheap on eBay IN UK is just because the UK market is different. It isnt driven by TCG player graphs and Pokémon centre stock as much as the US is.
Most of the Pokémon content is by US based creators and even the British ones still use things like TCG player for reference even though its not directly relevant for us. I think now it's OOS on PC it will go up but it's just not as reactive/fast as the US market because a lot of people probably haven't even realised yet. I guess we'll find out. I bought 2 boxes of ST last week for under retail even though I'm not a HUGE believer in the set overall. I also think the Lugia is at least a little undervalued.
As for BS, I love that you did this. Even just for the sake of someone actually going against the grain. Bored of people talking about the other sets repeatedly. I wasn't expecting SEVEN cases though holy hell. Personally I love the Empoleon and plan on picking that up in a PSA 10 soon.
I think once the other sets get too pricey, attention may eventually turn to BS and you'll be sitting pretty.
I managed to pick up a case of ST for £95 a box and a LO case for £105 a box, I did want more LO but getting expensive in the UK

After watching this video and seeing your stance on BattleStyles, I looked up the set and like it so bought a booster box! PokeRev and CoolTrainerRyan are now also putting out videos on BattleStyles. I think you made a good choice and this set is going to go up in value soon!

Excellent video and I agree that Battle Styles is a reasonable set to invest in long term. I'm not sure there's a true banger in there but it has some quality cards for sure. I'm trying to get one booster box from each SWSH set and Battle Styles was a recent addition because it's so cheap. I have been loosely working on this goal for a while but they are getting more expensive all the time. Most of my big pickups have been graded cards because I don't really have much space to store cases like you. I look forward to hearing more about your modern sealed investments.
So like you just explained people will pick it up just to complete the era booster box collection. Even darkness ablaze is like 800$+ a case. I can’t even think of one single banger card from the set other than Charizard Vmax regular, which isn’t worth more than sleepy T.. So I figure hey sleepy Tyranitar was a hot topic when the set first debuted so I’ll give it a shot. Do I wish I got it at 500-550$ sure, but I would have had to sit on it much longer IMO. I think 600-650$ it’s worth taking a chance on it for quick results close to the era being fully out of stock on PC.. This is either going to be very disappointing or a great experiment 😂

sometimes when the market is leaning one way you have yourself a killer set up. Mine was going all in on psa10 moonbreons at 800 and dropping 3200 cash on 4... i got blasted by everyone with the same ol argument. BUT POP IS 10k stupid!
love making those counter trades. they dont always work but sometimes they tell you the market is bottomed or topped
Yep best way to find out is to take the risk on yourself and put your money where your mouth is! That was a risky play but I’m glad it paid off. Battle styles is risky as hell with the lack of popularity but I think time passing by is going to be my secret weapon here… we’ll see! Already seeing BB prices creeping up. 😎
I think it's really easy to forget how many sets we still have yet to see in scarlet and violet, my hopes are way too high for the next few that release but I'm also relatively confident that the back end of scarlet and violet will not disappoint. I'm crossing my fingers for a meganium that matters, houndooms or mightyenas that actually have some effort put into them.
Idk temporal is mid to me, twilight just sounds mid and I don’t think the other sets will perform better. I think it’s just a different unique era altogether and 151 was as good as it gets. Paldea evolved, 151, Paldean fates maybe and temporal (only because it has some hyped cards) would be my set it and forget it sets. Maybe obsidian for the alt zard but that’s a stretch. 🤷🏻♀️

My favourite Sword and Shield set. Might be a dark horse because very few people are stacking it. Pokémon Go is another weird set that no one wants to invest in which could ironically make it go up. My only worry is how many people are opening these less popular sets? Could be loads because they're cheap or could be very few. Who the hell knows.

Ya i was looking at pokemon go set yesterday at a card show and was just like no f that set ahhah bought a Charzard ultra premium whatever that white box is with three promos, iono and paldea evolved booster display for 85
I like battle styles , I got three boxes to see what the set does in the future. I think they’ll rocket like other sword and shield sets . The urshifus arts are nice , will it be the best performing sets probably not but I think it’s undervalued rn😎🔥💯

Props to you man for making a move when everyone else is afraid to. I agree with all the logic behind it and think it’s much better than the earlier sets that are moving ahead of it, it’s only a matter of time before others join in and it starts to move as well. I do have a proposition I’m considering and that is if I sell one of my ES booster boxes to use towards a sealed case of LO or Brilliant Stars, how that play would pay out in the long run? I believe ES will do great but trading one to get 6 boxes of another set might be just as good or better. Excited to see how your investment pays off I would just be patient and give it a couple years!

But if you can get an order in on PC for a case of LO for retail I would. It didn’t let me do it today. Unfortunately… so might just sit tight with what I have. The first "alt arts" were actually the Arita gold mewtwo ex cards from BREAKthrough in 2016
Ok thanks for the info - well people get the idea that they weren’t necessarily the first of their kind but battles styles was technically the beginning of the alt art era. 😎
@@orionsires But thats kinda incorrect though when the last 4 sets of XY introduced them. Also the Gold Shaymin and Yveltal ex gold boarder alternate arts from the XY Premium Trainers Collection in 2017. Then the last 4 sets of S&M bought them back again. Then in SWSH it took 5 sets to bring them back to know they're a constant in every set. SIRs are just a new name for Alternate Arts in the SV era but still are technically alternate arts :)
@@orionsires Like you mentioned near the end, Sun & Moon back half sets all had alt arts too lmao... no clue why so many people falsely believe Battle Styles to have started it. Guess it's cause SWSH did the same as SM with regard to early sets not having alt arts, but the later sets having them. Regardless, seems like some newer people forget or just legit have no idea about the Team Up, Unified, Cosmic, and Unbroken alt arts that blow most SWSH ones out of the water.
I really love hearing that business is going well! It's a tough industry to be successful in.
So the way you feel about BS is how I feel about PE. I'm buying cases of Paldea for like $500, and I'm very happy.

That set is mad. Last time I checked the fishy had about 500 PSA 10's and the Tyranitar had 153. Some of these S&V cards are so hard to grade! $500 for a case is a steal! Wish I could find them that cheap in the UK! Lowest I've seen is £80 a box which I did buy a few at that price.
@@monkey39128 I really have no idea why Paldea is so low, but it's the one I honestly believe will have the highest climb percentage wise five years from now. Maybe I'm crazy, but I don't know anybody that's actually into Pokemon who thinks it's an mid set. I'm not even really into most of the mons in general, but I think it's a dope set with great art. I get that it's not a crazy set with Zards or a massive chase, but it's got a few great mons and some cool IR's and SIR's.

I'm not really into modern since my collection goals for vintage take so much money but modern is indeed beautiful.
In regards to modern tho I believe since hype is at an all time high, the risk is extremely high when picking up product at a premium price since there is no entry to barrier and no matter what rudy you believe to be there will always be a bigger rudy with a pokemon bathroom and since everyone is stashing away product, there will come a time when people will sell. And when this time comes and due to any reason hype dwindles for these sets, prices will fall down fast an stagnate imo. If you get in at a good cost there will be not much risk but I think it will still be illiquid to sell since the market will get flooded when it's offloading city. If demand explodes like in 2016 and 2020 this will not apply as much tho.
Imo tho with modern product the willingness to pay is highest for fun sets to open even tho the singles are cheap and most singles will be cheap because there are multiple metric tons out there. This applied with evolutions, you can get master sets for 500 yet sealed is expensive because people want to open them as this is basically the only kind of substitute if you want to feel like you are opening base set on a budget.
In that regard I think some of the best sets to buy are japanese high class sets as they are the most fun to open and looking at prices on ebay this holds true. I think shiny treasure ex is one of the best buys atm as demand is kinda meh but there is a shiny charizard, mew and gardevoir in them alongside shiny ARs and a shiny vault set of multiple popular shinys. I might just hold on, on buying vintage and buy some modern japanese.
Also the japanese booster boxes are a display piece within itself whereas english ist just a microwaved leftover in regards to set identity itself and box art which makes japanese sets more of s collector's item with more organic demand. English atm is a hype train without brakes where everyone tunes in to play slot machine and paint drying simulator.
You can't go wrong with both tho if you get in at and below retail and speaking of future liquidity
Retail and below retail early on when the time sitting on it is longer is probably the best move but I like the idea of buying a set right as it’s about to show some growth even if I pay a little more. I myself like vintage way more, agreed. You’re right about the uncertain future. No one knows what will happen all we can do is speculate and take guesses. With how all the other sets are performing I’m led to believe based on my own observations over time, that Battle Styles is the last train in sword and shield about to leave the station but I might be extremely disappointed and mistaken. @@orionsires I think you are right with battle styles, I guess it boils down to risk and reward with bb prices. If you get in early on your risk is very small but your reward is also small for a longer period of time. When prices start to climb supply is drying up and so your reward is a faster appreciation in price but slightly more risk with regards to demand stagnating or slowing down in general and or at higher price points but imo demand for modern sets is very strong.
For me evolving skies at 700 is where risk and reward fall down the stairs. I like the alt arts in battle styles, there is an empoleon, tyranitar and multiple urshifu alt arts in there. The time will come when people "rediscover" the set and are like "hold on", this set is actually not that bad, and at this price point? Take my money.
Edit: also supply for battle styles is far lower than most other modern sets and not nearly as many people stashed away product so it's only a matter of time before the train leaves the station.
I give you props for going for the play. If you think it’s a good move that’s all that matters. I hope you get rewarded for it.
Thanks homie, I do think it will work out in the long term but there’s still so much to learn and if I fail it will be a good lesson I won’t forget about to focus more on popular sets than best $ cost avg.

respect for putting your money where your mouth is! I actually picked up a case + 4 loose boxes of battle styles a week or two ago for roughly the same amount as I have been paying for 1 case of LO on PC. One thing I continue to be reminded is that we love to rip packs...BS will have its moment.
Thanks Bryce yeah the number of boxes you can get for the same price of other sets from the same era seems like a value driven decision for me. Will I get rich no but will it probably work out in a few months or a year? Probably. People want to complete their booster box collections and I’m banking on that helping. Shit I need to buy rebel clash still why is that 200 but battle styles only 105-110? Makes zero sense to me aside from different print runs I guess. 🤷🏻♀️

Too soon to tell if you made a bad mistake. I guess what you should look at is the ceiling for the money you put in. 5 years battle styles could maybe do triple box prices? But in 5 years im sure there might be others that def can do over x3. Still hard to predict. Maybe 3 cases was a lot? Good luck with battle styles
It’s going to be a fun experiment and if anything it will force me to change the way I think about investing in sets and go back to focusing on what sets I truly desire most. 100$ for a 3 year old box seems like really great value IMO 🤷🏻♀️
@@orionsires are you coming from a stand point of let's see what happens and pivot from the results and it will help you predict future investments and make the most accurate leaps in profit. It can be a combination of things. For me I want to pick the best profit in the long run, I've sometime known the better investment but did differently unfortunately. I got 4000$ in double masters collector instead of evolving skies to further add to my position which I hate that I choose magic. Even at a stage where I thought I learned before hand I still would do the opposite of what I believed is best, why I don't know entirely. I guess a good question is you obviously got a good price for the cases which is why you pulled the trigger, but when you did, did you not feel like it would be best elsewhere? And you could predict a way better movement per the years that would pass.? But just did it anyways? Was the factor to pull the trigger the price per case and you got in cheap? And yes even cheaper than darkness ablaze and a way better set in my opinion. Could you have choose better than battle styles and if so looking back what are they fusion.? That gengar chase will be insane in the future. I also want to collect more of all the one I believe can be game changers long term.
ngl I feel like not buying more LO because you don't want to raise your average and instead buying BrS and ST even though you think LO is better, doesn't make much logical sense. I can understand it if you're trying to diversify, but as far as "not raising your LO average" buying BrS and ST is raising your total average which is the metric to consider IMO. If you think LO will outperform BrS and ST, then that is the set to purchase, regardless of what your current buy-in price is.

You should have bought chilling reign. The depth of the set is insane. I think it is on par with ES. I personally bought 5 cases of chilling reign at 130/box

Wish I could buy more. It's on Pokémon Centre UK but it's 1 per person. You can do multiple orders but it usually caps out at 6. 😭 I've got a few I bought at £100 a box though ages ago thank god.

Long term you will be fine. Isnt the play i would have made because i think other sets have more room to grow and will grow faster but battle styles will go up. I mean even crimson invasion went up and battle styles is a mid set in my opinion for swsh and much better than crimson invasion. I still would have personally went more lost or cases of fusion even at its current price.

Collect what you like is a good phrase to live by and it seems like you just pulled the trigger on things you don’t absolutely like to just try and make money. Hope it all works out.
Well not just to try and make money, because I am very confident I will make some money regardless but more so to see if I was right or not. If I’m right it will be very validating and I can enjoy maybe even opening a box or two. If I’m wrong it will be a learning lesson to continue collecting only what you love and don’t focus on getting the cheapest $ cost avg. I do like the set just not enough to prioritize it above others, but in this case being so close to the end of that era and so cheap it seems like a value driven decision. It will be fun to see if I lose my ass on it too 😂

That is somewhat true but I also take on some debt too I’d be lying if I said otherwise. I do however pay my debts by the next cycle every month. But I definitely leverage some credit. 😎

@@orionsiresI got a new credit card to buy cases of SW&SH booster boxes, I have money coming later that can pay it off (it’s zero interest for 15 months), but the idea of telling people the story of getting a credit card to buy thousands of dollars worth of Pokémon cards as an investment and it actually working, motivates me more than the fact I know I’m going to make money 😂 most people would think I’m insane and I would love the chance to prove them wrong and make them think more seriously about this hobby

Its not that BS is bad or that your trade idea is fundamentally flawed. First, 7 cases is way too much with the counter that booster boxes will sell easily if you dont mind the work. Youre putting too much stock into ideas like of Oh, its the first Alt art set but in 3 years will anyone even know/care? Thats heavy speculation. BS on its own is a decent set but you can pay a little more to get any of the later SWSH sets. Its like how warren buffet said hed rather buy amazing companies at a reasonable price than mediocre ones at a great price. Opportunity cost is super high and competitive, I could see your trade idea making more sense if BS and LO are both sold out and ST is 170 plus
Right it might take more time than I anticipated but I just checked the price I paid on silver tempest and I paid 575$ so now I’m thinking it’s stupid to avg up on a set if I’m in it cheaper. Battle styles was the cheapest sword shield option that still

Really like your videos. Good luck with your purchase. My two cents is don’t get caught up in average your cost up when you have a winner. I know it’s hard to swallow, but business is business. I could have bought Qualcomm 5 years ago even though I had bought NVIDA for much less, but I would rather screw up my cost average knowing that the cream (Best) will always rise to the top. Yes, your purchase will rise, so thats good, but if you would have bought the worst WOTC from 1999-2003 vs averaging your cost up from those. Averaging up on the better sets would have been the better option. Good luck!

I believe battle styles will pass 140 soon and once it sells out on PC it’s game over. Go check eBay right now you won’t see cases for the price I just got them for. You only see higher prices.
