I own an S class W140 300SE 1993, 3.2 M104 ,5 speed 722.5 , with 126.000 miles (205.000 km) and I´m planning to change it for a W220 S430. I´ve had many problems with the W140 but fixed them all. I use the car with great care . The problems have been with some electronic modules. The mechanics of the car are very good: engine, transmission, differential, suspension, steering , brakes, etc. The accesories work perfect, including soft close doors and trunk, A/C, electric seats with orthopedic system, sun roof , etc etc, everything. The car is in absolute original condition. I have studied much about the W 220 and i think it is a very good car. All S class cars are very luxurious and must be treated like what they are: with care and not like an old pair of shoes , with abuse. They say the best engines are M112 and M113, and not M272 - M273. For the first owner excellent, but afterwards, great problems. The rest of the car is very good, using it as it should be done and giving the car the corresponding maintenance . Here in Chile, I´ve never seen a W220 with rust. Very good video, thank you.

Transmission mount ($25) 3. 1 Airsping ($400) It's been a great car, and I have logged about 40,000 miles since I got it. Engine is pretty reliable, just replaced the serpentine belt and a idler pulley. Highly recommend a 2003-2005 if you are up for the matainence.
Angry Whale love my 2005 S 500 4matic it has 165k miles but the engine is great love the smooth quiet ride. maintenance is a bit pricy but love it overall
i have had Mercedes all my life. 500s 420 sel 500 sl 430 sl. i drove a 2001 lexsus ls 430 from a friend and could not believe how well put togeather it was, way ahead of mercedes in luxury and above all it was much more sound proofed. its is even better than the lexsus 460 ls. so i found one in Madrid in perfect condition and drove 6 hours back to Malaga. wonderful. i have always had respect for Mercedes, but Lexus have made a classic with the ls 430, pure luxury at its best. i think the problem with me was that i never believed the Germans would be outdone, but i can can honestly say they have been this time by a future classic.
I was owner for 2 years of a clean S 320 CDI with only 65.000km from 2002. Was good to drive and range like 1350km with full diesel tank was perfect to drive from Monaco to Köln City by Italy and Switzerland. No issues with Airmatic suspensions system, work very great No issues with electronics parts Soft-Close stop to work by surprise one year after i had the car, never find why lol Main issue was the inter-cooler ; passenger side plastic part was dead all the time. Before to sell the car with 121.000km, i already installed the fourth inter-cooler.
i own a s600 with a renntech tune and fully built under, i have new billet turbos, installed new pistons and rods, new injectors and full new amg exhaust, also has 2 step. I have huge 315 volk wheels, with michellin tires, im pushing about 800 to the wheels, with a new lsd diff and a full titanium driveshaft, Its the most amazing build i have seen, and it shreds the tires like its on ice
I drive a 2002 S600 Designo with 145K miles (233K kilometers) and it drives like a dream. Smoothest Mercedes I've owned and it accelerates like a ROCKET. Far superior than my previous W140 600S.
Great review. I have the rare ABC suspension that was about 60% rebuilt by the prev. owner at dealership under extended warranty. My car thus has many ABC components from the W221 which are more durable. I have also spent thousands of USD myself on the system. Worth every penny for that million dollar ride!
Sir can you please tell me what all parts you've changed on the engine side of the car ,in your period of ownership, Leaving the airmatic suspension aside
@@johnysilvester8483 M113 v8 is actually very reliable, fuel efficient, and cheap to maintain, probably the best v8 Mercedes has ever built from that standpoint. Nothing other than ordinary maintenance items (spark plugs) and emissions (MAF) that you would have to replace on any vehicle with 125000mi...
I recently bought a s430 that I really love will put mi imum into until can buy a 2006 maybe. Have not seen to many issues except abit of rust but rolls down the interstate so well at 120 mph lol.
I buy my S600 (2000) IN 2012 at 100 000 miles...ALL BIG REPAIRING WAS EFFECTUED...now 6 years and 40 000 miles later ALL RIGHT except alternator and accus NO PROBLEM
A great ride extreme comfort with the air suspensions, quiet, great handling on turns, very reliable engine, noise reduced with double glass, luxury and quality interior, enough amount of technology. However the airmatic suspensions are so smooth but so sensitive too, in a country with Bad roads you better replace them with normal ones. Crank shaft disks also might cause noise on acceleration when it's loose. If you change all rubber parts when you buy a used one, you won't have any issues with all MB cars and models such as, Ball joints Control arms Engine / transmission mounts Crank shaft front and rear desks New tires also Then you will have a perfect ride, make sure to change the oil on time mobil one is highly recommended, but do change it at least 2000km before is time to maintain a great performance. An amazing car for real. But don't play much with it as you might cause damages while looking around for upgrades or treating it as brand new car. Important note DO NOT MAKE a holes in the body for the rear plate number as this will cause a huge electrical issue where the cluster instrument will go dead and the trunk will lock, and won't open unless you disconnect the cluster instrument ( 2 min work to do that)
I Wish One Of These That I Could Find A Super Clean Very Maintained Black On Black 2005-06 S500 With The AMG Sport Package But Every Time I Find One The Prices Are Similar To A 2007-08 S550 With The AMG Sport Package Although I Really Like The 2005-2006 W220 I Wouldn't Buy It Over A W221 I Guess I Have To Keep Searching Until I Find One For The Right Price
Mercedes did not decide to save money on the w220. They just started to use recycled materials and non-rare wood for the interior. They also started with water based colour for the body. It is the new painjob that caused the first models to rust, just like the W202 and w210 from that era. Facelift version of the W202, W210, W220 and also the CLK, SLK... have much improved rust resistence. W140 (just like any Mercedes-Benz from 1991-1997) had biodegradable wiring harness, that caused severe damage to the engine control management and throttle bodies (check how much a ECU and throttle body costs for a W140), with intermittent issues of all sorts and the engine could just stop randomly, for instance when going off the highway, downhill.... When the engine stops, you get no power steering, no power brakes, good luck.
Wiring harness issues in the engine bay have been fixed in 1996+ models for the W140. I wouldn't buy a W140 unless its a 1997 or higher. 1997 came with the bulletproof 5 speed also. 1997+ are VERY reliable S-Classes. 1995 and below are headaches.
your both wrong, degrading harness does not cause issue to said parts, just change the harness and your good to go. and as for the "bulletproof" 5 speed i have seen so many 1996+ models with broken transmission valve body meanwhile the early gen w140 4 speed transmission rarely has issues, just the delay going into reverse which is a common issue. in my books the early w140 is a much better car.
I´m thinking about a 2001 , didn´t they some more then than 1998 when they made the first one ?? What about the S350 2005 ???? What do you think about that ÞÞ Thank you !!!
I want to replace the petrol V8 engine of my W220 S430L(1999 made) with a Deisel engine. Is it possible and if so, what Deisel engine will be compatible?
If you get a 2001 s class in good condition with all the problems you said change and in good condition do you think it is worth buying and are the parts expensive for it?
Not sure why people keep saying the w140 is much better than the w220. I had both, a 1998 s500 and a 2006 s430 4matic. I can tell you the w220 is a much better car...better handling, improved fuel economy, interior is much quieter at any speed, seats are way better in terms of comfort than those in the w140. The w140 looks dated now too, and not in a good way like a w126...its just a big bloated hunk of metal. The 220 is not perfect by any means, its weak point is the airmatic suspension which has given me several problems, along with a few minor electrical problems. Just get a low mileage late model w220 and you'll be very pleased with it.
Nice vids! I have an 06 s500 rwd. I love the car. It's great to drive and a super smooth ride. She will easily go over 90 mph with the engine is chilling at like 2200 rpm lolol. but when it needs repairs it's horrible. This year I had clogged drainage holes that caused electrical problems and an a/c issue. Ended up costing about 8400. Luckily ins paid about 6000 of it. I'm scared to get another German car lmao thinking about an Audi or Volvo. Any advice on xc70?
Sir can you please tell me what all parts you've changed on the engine side of the car ,in your period of ownership, Leaving the airmatic suspension aside
@@johnysilvester8483 honestly mechanically it wasn't much. but i didn't drive it a whole lot. it wasn't my commuter car. all the money i spent (besides routine maintenance) was electrical. like i mentioned the problems caused by the drainage holes being blocked, the a/c, and the trunk mounted CD changer. the electrical issues were the worst because the car wouldn't do anything. it had to be towed out of my yard. lol BUT also keep in mind that i didn't have a mechanic to work on it so i had to take it to the dealer and they robbed me blind.
I have this car. The issue with it is that it can stop anywhere (having its complicated buttons) without starting. It’s quite unpredictable in this case. We called several engineers but none have been able to solve the problem. What could it be?
If only Lexus had the Mercedes styling it would have been an outright winner for the period 1999 to 2004. Lexus LS430 - Bit "old man ish" If Lexus had matched those lines, having a far more reliable electrical reputation, Mercedes would have been gone! I note that the high Miler has a tubular ring breakdown in the Cluster. Something you don't mention. Cluster failure is quite common? Liked the W140 but mine rusted in peace, sadly.
My dad had one when his mom’s lease was up and he took over the payments. It was a 2002. Back model w/ no 4wd. It rusted out and by 90k miles he had to unload it. It was stuck in 1st gear or something. I hav a jaguar XJ8 but going back and forth w/ an 04-06 W220 or the next generation. Such price difference as u can imagine . I hav a jag so I’m not scared to take on one of these but if I do a 04-06 ..I want it to be a one owner and hav no miles on it....so hard to come by ..if one pops up , someone let me know. Needs to be 4wd and only considering red, white, or silver.
I had no problems with this car the main thing full service every 6 months must be you not looking after it. I have a S600 V12 year 2000 it's the best of the best I hope u learning mate full service every 6 months ok

Please friends I need help, I really do not know already what do I have a Mercedes S Klass 2000 and my original system. She. Boss sample with an optical fiber. I bought the Android system and the new system is no entry in my original optical fiber. There are some adapter / converter that I can buy for not cancel my original optical fiber ?? because what I've seen on the Internet has only 2004 models adapter / converter. And I'm really at a loss Please Help !! :(
evyatarelful I have a 2002 USA-specW220, and I know when the facelift came over here in 2003 they changed the fiber optic wiring and gave it a whole new COMAND. I think our older system might require running wires for a stereo upgrade. I never really researched it though because I like the way my Bose sounds and have the MB Bluetooth "puck" for my iPhone and that's good enough for my needs
evyatarelful unless you're OK with the original system and a Bluetooth puck (for hands free calling) which you can find on eBay, you are going to have to pay major dollars for a complete rewire. IMHO it will not look as good either, but then again I am an OEM purist.
the engine in it is reliable-no big issues unless the previous owner abused it, but this doesn't mean that it has low maintenance costs -oil/coolant leaks can occur and fixing them can be expensive mainly if you don't have an independent specialist near you -this car had the ABC suspension as standard if I'm not mistaken, so you have to change the oil in it, and if it breaks or if it start to leak, then be prepared to pay a lot of money to fix it -if it's a 2002 model then it should be the facelifted model which is good-more reliable electronics all in all you definitely need to have extra money for the additional repairs/maintenance
Because the maintance of this engine is usually expensive - 2x turbochargers, 8 injectors, various sensors etc. Then there are more often problems with the worn timing chain and also the automatic gearbox is usually more often worn, than in the other engines.
Of course, if you find this model which is in really great condition, and you change the oil in the engine after 10 000, max 15 000 km and the oil in the gearbox after 60 000 km, then it should be all right, also use only high quality fuel and let the cold engine warm up-low RPM for the first 15-20 km and after a dynamic driving let the turbos cool down-1 min on idle before shutting down the engine. These are the basics.
Antwan Jones the mileage is a factor but like you seen here there is pleanty of miles left on them. The factors that really matter is how well its been maintained. Look around for signs of abuse, leaking fluid residue, rust, if it makes weird noises when idle or driven. Check how thick the brake pads are, check fluid levels. See if the have maintenance records etc for starters.
I have a S 320 W220 1999, the right shock is coming out air. Do I need to replace it or can it be reconditioned. Its so expensive to buy a new one, its costing R24000 just for one
Well the Lexus is generally more reliable, but the W220 from 2005 is also a good choice, it really depends on the actual condition of the car and your personal preference.

Troy Carlson I have a 2001. 114k no problems. people think it's a 2010 😂
Great review. I have the rare ABC suspension that was about 60% rebuilt by the prev. owner at dealership under extended warranty. My car thus has many ABC components from the W221 which are more durable. I have also spent thousands of USD myself on the system. Worth every penny for that million dollar ride!
Sir can you please tell me what all parts you've changed on the engine side of the car ,in your period of ownership,
Leaving the airmatic suspension aside
@@johnysilvester8483 M113 v8 is actually very reliable, fuel efficient, and cheap to maintain, probably the best v8 Mercedes has ever built from that standpoint. Thank goodness I have a 2002 S500
This was a great advice bro. I want to by one, in the near future. But, in reality, I do not think that this car is better than a W126.
your best review so far! Great job
thx
Thanks I do love your reviews....I found a beautiful but bargain w220 on Saturday......hmmm I'll keep my old Saab!

I buy my S600 (2000) IN 2012 at 100 000 miles...ALL BIG REPAIRING WAS EFFECTUED...now 6 years and 40 000 miles later ALL RIGHT except alternator and accus NO PROBLEM
Nice review can you please do a review, about the Mercedes w210 keep up the good work. thanks
maybe later, maybe earlier, I will see
anyone do you know how to lower the rear head rest manually?? my switch to lower them stopped working after i pulled them up manually. thanks
If you change all rubber parts when you buy a used one, you won't have any issues with all MB cars and models such as,
Ball joints
Control arms
Engine / transmission mounts
Crank shaft front and rear desks
New tires also
Then you will have a perfect ride, make sure to change the oil on time mobil one is highly recommended, but do change it at least 2000km before is time to maintain a great performance.
I really love the ride
I´m thinking about a 2001 , didn´t they some more then than 1998 when they made the first one ?? What about the S350 2005 ???? What do you think about that ÞÞ Thank you !!!
what are your thoughts on the 2001 S430 with right hand drive?
Awesome review
Every quality control problem you speak of is the same as the w126
I want to replace the petrol V8 engine of my W220 S430L(1999 made) with a Deisel engine. Is it possible and if so, what Deisel engine will be compatible?
Can you give Specifics about the 2000 S280 V6. I just wish to know more about it.
If you get a 2001 s class in good condition with all the problems you said change and in good condition do you think it is worth buying and are the parts expensive for it?
facelift wasn't until 2003
Tony outlaw in the US...but I think the Europeans got the facelift first though if I am not mistaken
yep, we got it in 2002.
What is problem with 400 cdi?
Can you do the W221 S-Class?
yes
Which is the best used luxury car one can buy in your opinion
Thank you.

@@johnysilvester8483 honestly mechanically it wasn't much. but i didn't drive it a whole lot. it wasn't my commuter car. all the money i spent (besides routine maintenance) was electrical. like i mentioned the problems caused by the drainage holes being blocked, the a/c, and the trunk mounted CD changer. the electrical issues were the worst because the car wouldn't do anything. it had to be towed out of my yard. lol BUT also keep in mind that i didn't have a mechanic to work on it so i had to take it to the dealer and they robbed me blind.
@@sighiguess thank you so much for your valuable reply
@@johnysilvester8483 you're welcome. good luck
I have a 2006 S55. It is a beautiful automobile. I would not trade it for a brand new Mercedes.
Why don't you recommend the S 400 CDI?????
Plz do review on lexus and infiniti
keep going!!
Whats wrong with the 4.0 cdi ?
Yes I use to have one one good car but the w221 is way better .
Nice Channel 👍
I had no problems with this car the main thing full service every 6 months must be you not looking after it. I have a S600 V12 year 2000 it's the best of the best I hope u learning mate full service every 6 months ok

I have problems with the keyless entry
I never really researched it though because I like the way my Bose sounds and have the MB Bluetooth "puck" for my iPhone and that's good enough for my needs
so what can i do?
evyatarelful unless you're OK with the original system and a Bluetooth puck (for hands free calling) which you can find on eBay, you are going to have to pay major dollars for a complete rewire. IMHO it will not look as good either, but then again I am an OEM purist.
thanks!
Can you please do reviews on the Mercedes Benz C200 series?
which one, the W203 ?
different car review W202 C200 to begin with...
What do you think about the 2004 version of S500?
That's a good combination, however the engine can have of course regular problems-as I said in the video
the facelift was not 2001 or 2002. It was 2003/4.
what do you think about a 2002 S55 AMG, without Kompressor?
the engine in it is reliable-no big issues unless the previous owner abused it, but this doesn't mean that it has low maintenance costs
-oil/coolant leaks can occur and fixing them can be expensive mainly if you don't have an independent specialist near you
-this car had the ABC suspension as standard if I'm not mistaken, so you have to change the oil in it, and if it breaks or if it start to leak, then be prepared to pay a lot of money to fix it
-if it's a 2002 model then it should be the facelifted model which is good-more reliable electronics
all in all you definitely need to have extra money for the additional repairs/maintenance
Thank you so much
Whew just bought one with 120k on it, for 8500 Canadian, cars like brand new, and everything still works!
Why dont you recommend the 4.0 v8 diesel?
Because the maintance of this engine is usually expensive - 2x turbochargers, 8 injectors, various sensors etc. Then there are more often problems with the worn timing chain and also the automatic gearbox is usually more often worn, than in the other engines.
different car review oh, ok, but if you can find a good one, and do regular maintenance, it should be ok
Thanks
is the 2002 s500 with 200,000 mile on it a good car to buy please help I don't know about cars
W220..... s320 or s600 maintnance cost is 1 to 5 ratio
Is it worth buying an s350 2000 at about 9000 euros? This is by far the best deals I have seen is an s class (the rest are 13000 EUR +)
I have a S 320 W220 1999, the right shock is coming out air. Do I need to replace it or can it be reconditioned. Its so expensive to buy a new one, its costing R24000 just for one
tanks !!
W126 is so much better
hi
mercedes s500 or lexus ls430
2005
Well the Lexus is generally more reliable, but the W220 from 2005 is also a good choice, it really depends on the actual condition of the car and your personal preference.
Lexus LS430
I cracked when asimo fell off hahahahahahahahaha
U are the best

Nice
