Because you must not have known of the vault-like builds of the W126 and W140. I've owned two W140. To get any higher in sheer quality, the next stop was Rolls Royce. YES. It was THAT serious. No one will ever say "Gee, the only way I can top this W220 is a Bentley or a Rolls."
@@ackvigI get what you're saying but a 220 would probably be in better shape after 20 years of use and a lot more reliable than a Bentley or Rolls from the same era....
@@MrCarGuy During my 7 years ownership,I´ve had no electrical issues.Even the pneumatic pump is still original and working. And this is a bloody 25 years old car.
I remember as a kid being 9 or 10 years old when this came out. Such a technological and mechanical work of art, my field of study is IT so the computers everywhere is actually a plus! The control you have over this car is insane with a computer/scan tool.
It's actually very good looking car and completely timeless design. Sure the W140 is an icon but it's not an icon because of its beautiful lines. It's just the GOAT. But the successor of this car (the model number escapes me now) is probably better car but this W220 shape has aged much better. A good example of these can be a lot of car for the money. Cheers, enjoyed the video.
So I never paid much attention to Mercedes as a car obsessed kid growing up in the 1990's. To be honest I thought they were just boring and staid looking cars for stuffy old rich people to drive as a status symbol. I was much more interested in domestic muscle cars, exotics and such. Now when the 203/211/220 era cars came out I thought they were gorgeous, they caught my eye for sure, but I figured they were still just flashy luxury cars and nothing more. Then I took a ride in a 2003 S55 Kompressor. Needless to say my opinion of Mercedes changed after that. That car felt like it had about 10x more speed, luxury, and style, and 100x more tech than anything else I'd rode in before. With a 500hp engine under the hood suddenly a Mercedes luxury car was a lot more appealing.... 😁

The PSE system and door locks are ruining my rebuild of my w220. I'd rather do a transmission removal than deal with this. But that m113k engine is too good to pass up.
In the used car market the values went too low and these fell in the hands of the “wrong” type of people and a lot of young people who had no business in an S-class. They ran them into the ground and the 220’s reputation went downhill. They are excellent and the M113 is fantastic.
You said it so well!Rust was an issue with every MB circa 1994-2005,and stupid people think that this problem means the cars were bad in everyway.Bad quality.Hah,W220 is sheer quality. The oldest are 25 years old,and most of them really reliable and drive like a new car.In many ways, the best S class.
What models do you own for your personal cars…. I am I. Love with the cl55 amp love that supercharger.. obviously the latest model before the change to the N.A. 6.2 or I also love the 2013-CL63 by turbo… if you were to pick between the sec gen CL would you go N.A 6.2 or later bi turbo?
The increasing use of electronics in cars was a necessity,in order to reduce emissions and increase the safety..and so on.I own a W123(1984)and I love the simplicity.I also have W220 and it´s been really reliable and cheap to own.
I never understood the hate for the W220. It’s the only S-Class with the bulletproof M113.

@@TireSlayer55 ..or W140.W220 is not a moneypit if you buy a well maintenanced one.
Well, it's everything else other than the metal. Specifically the electronics. But if you're good with electronics it's all repairable

Not a fan of the 140. Love the 221 though.

Cool cars, unfortunately in Finland and in other salt belt places those "melted" away quite fast.
Sadly yes

I saved two of them when I was young and poor (one rust free example from getting junked) so, eh. Just certain demographics
Man😒...some people drive them like it's a truck. Won't fix ANYthing on it. Just put 85 octane in it and go😒

N/A 6.2. Biturbo motors are junk. My personal card is a long list!
I was never a fan of the W220 it wasn't a bad car in hindsight but it was definitely the start of Mercedes-Benz we see today.
