I was fortunate enough to have met TOTO in 1979 back stage at a 3 day event at the L.A. Coliseum. They are one of most talented bands of all time. Each member is a master at their craft of producing great music. Steve’s guitar playing is among the best ever.
Toto is its own musical planet. The hits are great examples of how to write great pop songs, but don't let that be your only definition of the band, because most of the iceberg is below the surface. they can rock heavily with the best of them, they do killer jazz fusion, very progressive rock epics and sometimes all of it at once. As an example, check out Gypsy Train or Jake To The Bone from Kingdom Of Desire. This is another band you can spend years exploring and never quite get them pinned down. Love seeing you get into this territory.
I was SOOOO into this album when it came out and my older brother brought it home. This song, "I'll Supply the Love" and "Hold the Line" from this album were played at every dance party in 1978-79.
Hard to believe this is the same band that put down Hold the Line and Girl Goodbye. On the same album! Killer groove, and great lead vocals by Steve Lukather
As some other people noted, Jeff Porcaro is the drummer here. He is on a number of Steely Dan tracks. Cheryl Lynn was quite an R&B vocalist at one time and that's who you hear here. In addition to being a great guitarist, Steve Lukather is also a great vocalist and that's who leads here. In other Toto songs he and Bobby Kimball would be the lead vocalists with Bobby singing the higher parts. Another great band made up of session musicians. Love your channel and your journey here. You hit two of my favorite songs in one day - this one and Yes' Starship Trooper! Be sure to hit Toto's 'Rosanna' if you haven't already.
Original Toto lineup Jeff Porcaro on drums, Steve Lukather on guitar, David Paich on keyboard, Steve Porcaro on keyboards, Bobby Kimball on vocals, David Hungate on bass. These six guys play on the first four albums. Lenny Castro would fill in on percussion and sometimes other session musicians might make a brief appearance. After these initial very successful four albums, many changes in band members took place. Some worked out better than others. Mike Porcaro on bass and Joseph Williams on vocals (son of movie composer John Williams) are examples of excellent additions to the band. Toto IV was the number one album of 1982. Then many members in the band were brought in by Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones to help write and play on Thriller, the number one album of 1983. This band's influence in the rock, r&b, and pop scene from the 70s through much of the 90s is undeniable, yet many people don't really know their history or impact.
Jeff Healy, forgot to mention he’s been blind almost his whole life. 1. See the light live 2. Srv and Jeff doing look at little sister 3. Acoustic gems Jeff Healy/ my little girl I’m sure there’s more recommendations just as mindblowing. Never left suggestions in watching reactions for at least 5 years just love the airplay vibe💯
Yes Yes Yes!!!!! This is TOTO’s most R&B flavored song; this features the Disco legend Cheryl Lynn (To be Real). TOTO is so much more than Africa and Rosanna; they are in my top 10.❤ They are a grouping of the best studio musicians and songwriters; one of them co-wrote “Human Nature”, performed by Michael Jackson, and TOTO played the music. On a tangent, but I’ve always loved SWV’s take on Human Nature with their song “Right Here”. The TOTO members are all male, and I had the honor of seeing them live in 2018❤
Steve Lukather is an amazing guitarist and vocalist. I saw Toto in their current formation and even with new musicians in some slots, the quality is still there. Great showmanship and professionalism is expected by Lukather for each band member, and they deliver.
Cheryl Lynn was apparently in another studio at Sunset Sound and they had worked with her. Asked her to sing the hook real quick in the session. Amazing. Like one take I think
Now you've got to check out Toto's "Rosanna" and "Africa." 🙂 Toto is an all-male band... That said, Cheryl Lynn ("Got to be Real") was the backup singer on this track.
Bobby Kimball sings lead on " Hold The Line ". He's from my hometown of Vinton, Louisiana and is a family friend. Love TOTO ❤ I also love Ms. Cheryl Lynn on the backing vocals on this song.
Fellas I would suggest this for your enjoyment, Toto 2013 live in Poland. Rosanna, Hold the line, Africa, outstanding live show with Joseph Williams Vocals. I will never steer you wrong, trust me on this one. Good stuff guys. Be well.
Hey guys, Toto is another band that could lead you down a deep rabbit hole of great songs. They had the perfect combination of excellent songwriting and fantastic musicianship. They were all studios musicians in LA prior to forming Toto. 4 members of Toto (David Paich, Steve Lukather, Jeff Porcaro and Steve) played on Michael Jackson's Thriller album (and Steve Porcaro wrote Human Nature), 3 members (David Paich, David Hungate and Jeff Porcaro) performed on Boz Scaggs' classic Silk Degrees album and individually, several members have performed on a mind boggling number of albums for multiple artists in different genres over the years The guitarist/singer, Steve Lukather, has done the most session work over the last 30-40 years, having performed on >1500 albums by a multitude of artists, including Aretha Franklin, Earth, Wind & Fire, Lionel Richie, Chicago, Donna Summer and The Tubes. He also wrote or co-wrote a lot of Toto's hit songs and has co-written songs for other artists, including the George Benson hit Turn Your Love Around.
Lukather played rhythm Guitar on Beat It and sings this song, GREAT band...Many of the guys from Toto were the MOST sought after Sessions guys in the Business. Steve Lukather has like 14 grammies haha..
TOTO was the last band I saw live. "St George and the Dragon" and "How Many Times" are two of my favorite TOTO tunes. "Toto 35th Anniversary Tour 2013 (Joseph Williams)" is safe for reaction videos and one hell of a concert. Members changed over the course of their era, but a simple search saves me writing a mini novel here. Steve Lukather, David Paich, and Mike Porcaro are original members.
Mike Porcaro was not the original bass player. David Hungate played on their first 4 studio albums. Steve Porcaro on keys and of course the great Jeff Porcaro on drums were originals. All three brothers of course. I think Mike came in on the Toto IV tour in 82.
I was blessed ,came up with this stuff. That groove, that vibe, is a little different from some of their other stuff. Real quick , this was kind of considered stepping into that Disco zone a little bit, great musicians , one and all but on this track hard to overlook that bass, really drives this song. Great stuff guys. Be well.
A "super-group" made up of some of LA's top studio musicians. Between all of them, they have credits on over 1500 other (non-Toto) albums, including Thriller. You can hear hall-of-fame drummer Jeff Porcaro's work in TONS of hits (including Steely Dan) throughout the 70-80's and same for singer-lead guitarist Steve Luthaker's work. Toto is worthy of your attention! A favorite of mine (and there are many) is "Mama", which is equal parts rock/funk/jazz. Their first notariety was Boz Scaggs' band on his chart-topping Silk Degrees album.
Toto all male that song featured Cheryl Lynne..Members of Toto were studio musicians with a discography that is hard to be equaled.FROM M.Jackson to Steely Dan and everything in between one or more of their members have had a hand in it.
Knew there was a chance you guys heard that one my dad used to play it allot too haha try 99 its super cool and lil more obscure also I won’t hold you back, Hold the line, Rosanna and so on
The great Jeff Porcaro on drums...the Porcaro brothers were originally from Connecticut, went out to Cali and met up with Steve Lukathur and Bobby Kimball the rest is the best.
You guys should a deep dive of this band of mostly high school friends from LA. Their Seventh One album is worth a full album reaction a song at a time!!! It's a fantastic rabbit hole...and so many great albums on top of the first recommendation...good luck guys!!!
ToTo is as big a rabbit hole as Steely Dan. The song you were thinking of is Africa. Yup, that’s them and also Rosanna is a must. You won’t be sorry to go through their catalog. ✌️
Love this song! Their guitarist, Steve Lukather did the iconic solo on Boz Scagg's Breakdown Dead Ahead. They are top musicians,....among the best ever.
Disco was a fun time to date. Great dance song. Hadn't heard this since. Still a country / southern rock fan, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I had a good time.
There's a 1990 video of Toto performing this song on UA-cam. It's definitely worth checking out. It's played slightly different, including a really good guitar and keyboard solo. Also, the girls are on stage singing their part, which adds to it.
Hey guys great song and a great reaction. The background singer is actually Cheryl Lynn, an awesome singer in her own right. Also a side note..... Copyright laws do not protect the titles of songs or movies or poetry or books. Freedom of the press..... 😮😅😂🎉❤😊 💕
I have a place for Toto in my musical heart. This song is definitely part of why I like them (some of the more frequently played songs I don’t need to hear again). Toto wrote/recorded Miss Sun before Boz Scaggs made it a hit. If you don’t know Miss Sun, check out the Boz version.
Yes Toto.... Africa omg u guys ! Loeten to them first.. Then frog leap studios remake to honor the song. Momma got a rule do a remake do it justice or not at all!!!! Cheers
You asked who made up the band. Simple answer: bad ass session players who decided to strike out on their own as a band. How bad ass? Well, starting with Pretzel Logic, at least one of them, if not more, was playing on every Steely Dan album, except The Royal Scam and Aja, through Gaucho. Plus David Paich handled the keys on Michael Jackson's Thriller; and Steve Lukather has played on everyone's albums it seems.
@@AirplayBeats Assume you mean right and left from point of view of the viewer: In my mind you were the other way around.: Might you consider swapping names to make it easier for me?
Toto was a band that didn't exactly know which musical direction they were going to take. Their first album (which I bought thanks to hearing "Girl Goodbye") was a dreadful affair and my hard rock heart was let down by the rest of the songs on the album because being a mish-mash (miss-match?) of vomit-invoking USA radio friendly barfs and some other stuff that cannot be named properly. In the end, they continued with the vomit stuff and I quit following them. Had better things to do, even if it was staring at the ceiling from my comfy chair. Cheerio lads. Warm greetings from Belgium.
Lets have some word play here (Ge)orgy (P)orgy (take off the Ge and the P ) what do you see there is also a Name spelled Backwards in there... hey it was the 70's
I bought their first album ... INCREDIBLE GROUP... They can play any sound ... this group very good and unique
That Jeff Porcaro groove is just incredible.
RIP Jeff, man… what a god
I was fortunate enough to have met TOTO in 1979 back stage at a 3 day event at the L.A. Coliseum. They are one of most talented bands of all time. Each member is a master at their craft of producing great music. Steve’s guitar playing is among the best ever.
Agreed. Steve is something else on the six string.
The incredible Cheryl Lynn, was the female vocalist on this jam...check out the extended version.
I only knew about the original (which I adore). There seem to be several extended versions & remixes. Which do you recommend?
@@Luuuc It's a disco version or 12inch, but it's really good.

It's got that 70's rock flute accent. Great song. Legit band with two lead singers.
Toto was the backing band on Boz Scaggs’ biggest hits.
and are basically the thriller house band for part of that record. session monsters.
And Dune soundtrack
I was SOOOO into this album when it came out and my older brother brought it home. This song, "I'll Supply the Love" and "Hold the Line" from this album were played at every dance party in 1978-79.
Ah, the TOTO rabbit hole... Lots of talent, style, and a dynamite groove on virtually every track.. Enjoy...
Toto always delivers. Just an amazing band. Give I'll Supply the Love a listen.
Absolute CRAZY TALENT with that band! One of my all time favorites for sure!
Hard to believe this is the same band that put down Hold the Line and Girl Goodbye. On the same album! Killer groove, and great lead vocals by Steve Lukather

Incredible musicians, incredible songs. Thanks again guys!
My favorite Toto song and Cheryl Lynn is phenomenal.

Actually one or two should be as the years go passing by covered by Jeff Healy. Somehow missed that.
There's something about Toto, earth wind & fire,Boz Scaggs and Chicago in the late 70s early to mid 80s the production on those records was amazing

Hell yeah! Awesome band. Lessons In Love is killer too.
Have you seen this Level 42 performance? Really enjoyable. ua-cam.com/video/ou_kVmBS2AY/v-deo.html
Absolutely!
this is a great song, sort of their take on a nursery rhyme. it's a killer.
The guitarist Steve lukather. wrote a lot of Song for the Triller album for Michael Jackson's !!

Great stuff! The live version from 1990 is so much better though, you should have done that 😂
Please do Jeff Healy live if you are not familiar. Won’t disappoint. Has a bunch of great videos
He played with SRV as well live, I would recommend watching that and just solo performances by him.
Jeff just laying down a nasty ass grove on the drums
