i saw a total of 6 so far, one of them I will remember for the rest of my life. It went straight down, and at its lowest point, sharply turned at a right angle like it bounced off the earths atmosphere!
A meteor shower lasts for a long time (in this case ~3 days), so everyone on Earth with a dark clear sky gets a chance to see it. Some events, like a solar eclipse, don't take very long, and you only get to see them if you happen to be in a good location. Good luck with your viewing in Sweden.
I've seen 2 so far tonight, in just under 10 minutes of watching while lying in my back yard. I'm in a suburb of Vancouver, BC, so the light pollution is fairly high, but for once we're having a cloudless night, so I feel lucky. Going back to watch for more!
It is true you can see more meteors after midnight, but the most spectacular ones occur when the radiant is near the horizon, since those can streak completely across the sky. I recommend watching as soon as it gets dark.
Just saw 3 in about 20 minutes time in central Texas in poor lighting conditions. It was thrilling. Think I'm going to head out to the country for the next few hours.
I'd be more than happy to use the meteor-counting app if they would just make it available for Windows Phone. Considering how easy it is to develop for WP and just how many users there are, it's hard to believe that we still get overlooked by everyone.
I wondered the exact same thing. I was out almost two hours, and never saw one satellite. Usually I spot one right away, but not last night. I did see about 30 bits of fluffy ice and dust hitting the atmosphere though.
I stay on friday 10 night(between 11-2am) up with my friends and we saw amazing 11 meteor shower, but on saturday night it was just awsome !(again between 11-1am) We’ve calculated 17! But there was one so big and so LONG that we got goose bumps . You could see yellow and blue colours in tail. I have not seen any more last night cos of bad weather here. Looking forward for next one. Gosia form Hampnett, Gloucestershire GL54, UK
We have had a terrible drought all summer long, but, it seems every time a meteor shower comes along it gets too cloudy to see it.I just hope it clears up by 2:00a.m. I just might step outside and take a look for a while.
No, @snappback18, I don't get freaked out. The stuff that comet trails (and therefore, these meteors) is made up of is not like giant balls of hard rock that would survive the incredible heat generated by anything that falls into our atmosphere. They're kind of light and fluffy rocks and ice, and burn completely up very easily long before they hit the ground. Even if one survived (very VERY unlikely), it's far more likely to just splash harmlessly into an ocean or uninhabited area.
there is at least one photo, taken by don pettit. youtube won't let me link the url, but if you google "pettit moon venus jupiter" it should be the top item. not only can they see a conjunction, they can see it 16 times to our earthbound once!
Here, in northern wisconsin, late last night and early this AM we counted 10 and also 2 amazing fireballs! This was definitely the best I've seen!..Although I haven't watched for meteor showers too intensively or for long till this one. I plan to try again tonight & tomorrow..but so far tonight it's cloudy :(..and definitely will next August :)
from the midwest. watched for about 2 hours and saw around 30 total. I found staring at the stars very hard and thinking was more interesting but still neat.
Saw sooo many here in Southern CA! Just, wow! So many fireballs, too! The biggest fireball was the first meteor I've ever witnessed. I thought all of them were going to be like that. It was really scary!
Shooting stars (or falling stars) is a common name for meteors. A meteorite is a chunk of space rock that makes it to the earth. The particles in a meteor shower are not big enough to survive the encounter with earth's atmosphere.
It's actually debris from a comet. The Earth passes through it and thats what is streaking across the night sky....I have no idea why they call it a meteor shower?
Me too!!!!!! I yelled and it freaked me out too....i tryed to film it...i got a bit of it....not sure if its clear.....post again if you see them again..
Im from Sweden i drove to a mountain about 00:00 and it was wonderfull I saw about 20-30 comets in 1 hour and I saw the ISS to. It was my first time watching a meteor shower so I rly enjoyed it :D
the problem here in northern sweden is that the sky dosen't get dark in the summer, from May- July the sun barly goes down, now it's getting darker in the nights but you can only see 1/4 of the stars...=/
also i was following a satellite which appeared to slow down speed up and change direction quite often. is that normal for satellites or is that an illusion?
Last year I was freezing my a*se off out there watching them and only saw 2 shooting stars. This year here in Lanzarote we´re having a heatwave and it will still be about 27C in the early hours of the morning, so I´m really looking forward to it. :)
Can't wait for the show to begin. What a way to kick off my B-day, August 12th. Enjoy the show everyone.

I stayed up to watch this last year. Saw over two hundred in about two hours, it was pretty neat.
Saw 55 meteors in an hour in the North Okanagan. Some were really bright and spectacular, others fairly faint. Quite amazing!
Missed it but I heard December 13th - 15th another is scheduled to be bigger and better! Read it on the space website
Saw two in US, state of Georgia last night, around 10pm and about five to ten minutes apart.
Last night I saw about 1-2 a minute in central California looking forward to viewing more tonight
Very Cool, I'm in West Florida , U.S.A. , and it appears a little cloudy at the moment, I'm hoping it clears up a bit .
I was lucky enough to see one of the first meteors of 2012 last night. It was cool.
beautiful clear skies here in dallas, tx. already seen 7. very beautiful...
Perhaps you can see some. The Perseids are best viewed in the Northern Hemisphere, and you're right on the Equator. Good luck!

I always wanted to check out how an EMP works in general, but I never took the chance of doing research on that. Sounds awesome though.
@gcrady~I just spent some time checking out NASA's website and couldn't find anything live for the perseids. Would really love to see their showing.
Saw 4 from 12-1am EST in Louisville. Might as well stay up till 5am to get the best view.

Derren Brown mentioned this in 'Apocalypse' so I figured I'd check it out
" Will be ready tonight and tomorrow morning for another spectacle of cellestial science "
