Both Half-Life games have such masterfully done opening sequences. The atmosphere and lead-up to the game play itself is so amazing. I'm so glad Ray is playing this and hopefully 2 as well.
Ray's Freeman feels like a more unhinged version of Ross Scott's "Mind of Freeman" Freeman (something I wasn't sure was possible). Ross's was content with just yelling at them and threatening to kill them. Ray's Freeman just caps the scientists and acts like it's another day at the office. It's like Freeman's been waiting for an opportunity to do this his whole career. It's great.
A reminder that this game is FAN MADE! I played it during the development when there was only the first part before they added Xen. its such a good game, glad to see you play it!
We have such an awesome lineup thanks to Twitch chat!! Thanks heaps for all the generous subs and "forcing" Ray to play through some bangers this year. Saw F.E.A.R in the Library Page, hoping this is a future playthrough!!
Never seen or played this game, but it hits with nostalgia. The sounds effects, animations, voice acting, this is truly the based format of games for its time.
Just starting watching the archive here, don't know if anyone informs him of it yet, but Ray mentioned the PS2 Co-op mode, Decay. It HAS been put onto PC but through a couple of fan-made mods because unlike "Blue Shift" & "Opposing Force," it hasn't been OFFICIALLY rereleased outside of its respective port yet. The fan mods that bring it to PC are the "Hoaxer" mod/port & Sven Co-op, there is also a mod that turns the Co-op campaign into a single player/1 character campaign called "Half-Life Decay: Solo Mission." I would suggest looking at That Trav Guy's videos going over Decay and the related port based expansions if anyone is curious on the history of them, it's pretty interesting. Also he just goes over some of the things you should be made aware of if you're going with the Sven Co-op route for playing Decay. edit: I will say out the gate (only at 22:52 at the current time writing this), I feel like Black Mesa can't really be counted as the "canon" version of events, one point being that they gave the Mark 4 a mic and speaker function which feels like a bit of an oversight where it asks "why wasn't Gordan contacted at all during the events of the game?", plus I think that was like one of the big factors of why the Mark 5 exists and, according to the PS2 port manual, is what Dr. Gina Cross and Colette Green were testing during the Decay Co-op mode story (even though granted Valve didn't really seem to adhear or pay any mind to the canon set by the other developers that made the expansions for Og Half-Life 1). Also heard they kind of dehumanize the HECU when really they were just folks doing their job. Also, honestly surprised they didn't give us a Black Ops campaign for folks like Ray considering he's basically running with that mentality. XD
The second half of the game is quite a bit longer than the first half, mainly because the last couple of levels got huge overhauls and were made extremely long as a result. The remake did a lot more than Ray might realise since he doesnt remember the original. Lots of areas and levels have been completely altered or moved around, with some areas cut and a lot of compleetly new sections. The "On a Rail" level for example has been drastically altered. It used to be way longer with loads of stops and starts and maze like tunnels. The soundtrack is an original and is on spotify. BTW I'm pretty sure the "Black Mesa" difficulty is equivalent to Halo's "Heroic", so I hope ray considers lowering it in the later levels if he starts struggling. The difficulty in the later areas is crazy and i'd hate for it to sour Ray's opinion of the game thinking thats the standard difficulty.
I never played the first half life game so this is a much appreciated upload. Really looking forward to maybe seeing you play half life 2 which is the only game in the series ive played
I have never before seen or played Half Life so this was my first experience of it. Is it zoomer of me to say it looks like a fancy Gary's Mod game mode? Loved the first part, excited for the rest!
Technically it is. Half-Life 2 is where the engine started, then Gary's Mod is a mod of HL2, then this game was a mod using Gary's mod to remake the first game, But the mod didn't have the final level. Then it was turned into a real official remake that was sold as its own thing and was fully finished with the final level remade into a far larger scope than the original, nearly doubling the length of the game. But it still is using the same engine, and I'm sure Gary's Mod was used to help make it.
I have never been interested in watching half life because it is so old but I am glad ray played black mesa it actually looks pretty cool I may need to check it out
CANNOT believe you are playing Half Life. Though the humor and hilarity are all in the original Half Life; I hope Ray plays it on stream; I know he'd appreciate the humor and charm.
Quicksaving for me usually goes as follows: I quicksave a lot for a couple of hours until I forget. And then I do something stupid and notice that my last quick/autosave was like 2 hours ago.
Regarding twitch, you have sympathy for that many people getting laid off until you have to be one of the people who have been working at such place until that point, having to put up with these people doing NOTHING and still getting paid. For an employee who isn't a lazy piece of wet cloth, seeing a useless employee get fired is a glimmer of justice.
This series is great but warning (if ye get that far): HL2:EP2 Chapter 6 is the worst thing ever elemayo (the game ends when I put Gnome in the rocket as far as I care 🤭)
I'm the same age as Ray and I've never seen or played Half life myself so this was a great vid to watch. He mentioned that Black Mesa changed some things so now I'm curious as to how much has been changed from the original and if it's worth going and playing.
not me furiously typing at the end "DO THEY GLOW IN THE DARK" everytime ray makes a reference to the merch he's wearing

Still watching Freeman’s Mind 2. He’s like halfway through HL2!
One of my favorite internet creations.
He's basically running a "Undercover Black Ops Freeman" run.
Just like the squirrel at MIT

Hell yeah!
I love that glassesjournal makes us here watching on YT feel so welcome. Thank you! 🥰
you're welcome! you guys are just as important as twitch chat
I'm no longer sure what am I subscribed to: Ray's chill playthroughs or Gale's awesome art.
Missed the stream yesterday, so now I'm strapped in for the VOD. Would love to see Ray play HL2 and the episodes sometime ❤
28:12 "oh there's a crab in it. Good."
1:11:11 Einstein's box, yes.
Such a fun stream to watch! Ray mentions maybe doing the expansions and HL2 if people like the playthrough so here's hoping!
omg I hope he does HL2 it's my favorite game of all time
Ray randomly popping scientists for no reason makes me laugh every. Single. TIme.
You're not alone. I quicksaved like a madman playing the old star wars dark forces games
Ray just shooting everyone he meets has me in bits. Please for the love of G-Man play the second game!
Never seen or played this game, but it hits with nostalgia. The sounds effects, animations, voice acting, this is truly the based format of games for its time.
Not gonna lie, the prospect of a potential Half Life 2 playthrough is unexpected but highly exciting. Here's hoping 🤞
56:42 all i could think is "So im behind the chair now" bit back when ray was a part of that crew for a video
What video was that from again?
@MrGrim-ib4ix it was one of the OG AH update videos he did. He watches and reacts to it in his nostalgia video 10 years of watching old videos
I watch your channel with displeasure. Your videos are a great way to stress out and get negative emotion.⬛️🍖🌽
Wow, negative andy over here
@@Lanceon117 i'll call you a downstairs andy like ray, dont test me
Don't engage the bots. It makes them stronger! 😏
Do you also watch at 0.5x speed for true masochism?
@@MachineGunJoepwnsthose people belong in jail for putting that speed on anythjng, stream, movie, book or music lol
can we talk about how ridiculously hard the music in this goes? holy shit?

I hope with playing this ray will continue on to playing half life 2 once he finishes this. Such iconic games.
Don't think I've ever clicked on a video faster after seeing Black Mesa.. also 2:19:04 look, Gordon, Ropes!
Ray it's very cool of you to lean from side to side during loading screens to make it known that the game/stream isn't totally frozen.
Oh shit, what? Didnt expect this ever.
Nice to see Ray delve into a franchise that's as old as I am (dear god....)
Hearing the Stanley parable narrators voice as a scientist was super awesome and threw me off for a sec
Ray playing Black Mesa is the late Christmas present I wasn't expecting!

So happy to see this epic catalogue of games getting played. Goddamn ray is a quick shot
Edit: i meant snapshot, but quick shot is 👍
Us UA-cam frogs noticing that kiss took ray 5 minutes lol
Opposing Force is a goated expansion, would love to see Ray play through it.
I remember playing Black Mesa when it was just a mod back in 2013 before it was fully released. rnjrOld
Enjoying this video honestly! Leaving a comment as well cause this is pretty great!
I never played the first half life game so this is a much appreciated upload. Really looking forward to maybe seeing you play half life 2 which is the only game in the series ive played
I've also played the coop with my cousin back on PS2. All I remember is that we were two girls...the characters, not me and my cousin.
21:50 - he has Minecraft installed and on the toolbar
This is one game i have been waiting for. Such a good game.
Wild way to find out i was born on the same day that Half-Life came out. So HL is now the biggest celebrity i share a birthday with in my eyes.
“It’s about to go critical…”
“What’s up everybody…”
Ray: I'm in the barrel today?
Me: UH. Did he just say he's in the barrel today? Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh shit-
I'd love to see a HL2 remaster or even just ray playing through the other games!
didnt they announce an rtx version of hl2 recently? I think it looked like a decent graphics bump

Be real funny if one of the changes made from the original was that the big crab arms *could* hear through your mic like in Lethal Company
21:33 Black Mesa THEN Prey?! You spoil us!
Man another slick thumbnail
Finally, someone else who also rebinds crouch to MB4
I love this rendition of Half Life, but I play on the lowest difficulty. The soldiers are insane.
yes ray i bind the crouch and sprint to the side two buttons on mouse
"die freeman," that's German for "the freeman"

CORRECT he's playing Black Mesa
So Half Life, just a reimaging. @@michael2636
49:13 I hate how good Ray is at making me laugh
Ray love the raisin canes order, but my dude you gotta get the slaw
This going to be great to watch ,Ray playing half life.
Yo! At 19:00 is The Narrator from the Stanley Parable!
Ray's Gordon caused the resonance cascade on purpose
Quicksaving for me usually goes as follows: I quicksave a lot for a couple of hours until I forget. And then I do something stupid and notice that my last quick/autosave was like 2 hours ago.
IIRC, the co-op campaign exists on PC as a mod called Half-Life Decay
Is that one scientist in front of the test chamber the narrator of the stanly parable?
It's too bad Steam achievements don't matter, because I would LOVE to see Ray doing the Top Hat/Pizza "Gnome Chompski" achievements.
ive onmy ever played a couple hours of half life 2. is this one entirely in this one facility?
I was 8 days old when half life came out at least something good came out in November 1998
100% wanna see Ray finish this and play Half-Life 2 as well, absolute masterpieces of their time.
id love to see ray play system shock remake
The og game came out a year after I was born 🙂
1:59:20 im sure a lot of us were looking forward to this moment
The original Half Life is the only Half Life game I ever played. Not sure if I have even beaten it.
18:30 STANLEY PARABLE NARRATOR

great to see ray being a variety streamer again instead of a lethal company streamer
i mean he’s only been doing them once a week for like a month and a half, and they’re fun to watch, so…
Imagine ray liking a fun game with his hilarious friends, kind of like when he started out.
he plays lethal company once maybe twice a week please LMAO
