Very concise and clear explanation for a novice home recorder like myself. I've just acquired a MOTU 896HD second hand, about 20 years old, with 8 inputs. I can now get on quicker than trying to read the Cubase manual or various forums.
Thank you so very much for all you do. But I have a question. I use Cubase 12pro now I have done all of this bus I am still not getting signal from my mic. If you tap the Mic I can hear it working but no signal on my monitor...midi is working but I can't record line/mic..pls can you help?
Great video as always. Looking forward to the next one on connecting External Instruments in Cubase Pro. Have followed other videos on setting up external synths up but doesn't work well for me when trying to use vst effects on hardware synths. Hopefully it will include a detailed step by step set up explaining the best routing audio interface connections etc, as I've scanned your book (version 11) and can't find much about why it's not working well for me in there.
Either would do - it's more a case of which you prefer to use. I would typically set up mono channels as that is an easier way for me to think during a session (i.e. I don't have to translate between the physical inputs and a left or right channel of a stereo pair), but some people prefer to have a stereo input and just "know" that physical input 1 is Stereo In Left.
Great video! Clarifying that group fx was the same as could be created by creating track blew my mind... such redundancy in the layout. Now I don't feel so bad that it's taking so long for me to learn. :-D Thank you.
If you're using an ASIO driver, then it will work with only one device (or type of device), so you'd need to use something like ASIO4ALL to be able to address different devices at the same time. In short... no.
i have my output as the MG10XU mixer where i have monitors connected. i can record and get a signal but no sound on playback but i can hear the metronome, what's wrong?
I am extremely new, I have found several channels none of which come at this from the angle of absolute beginner. For example: In you admittedly fantastic video you start with things already preset, say they are preset, but you don't show how to preset them. In other words is there a Cubase Artist 11 For Dummies. If you want to write one I volunteer to be the dummy!
Not a Cubase or Nuendo user yet, really just admiring from afar and wanting to figure out if making the leap makes sense for game audio. Really like the UX, it's very intuitive and mostly how my brain works, so it's ticking a lot of boxes for me! With Audio Connections, how would you organize say an external mic pre-amp that can take microphones, line signals and instrument level signals? How about a Line 6 Pod rack that takes both instruments and mics? Neither are what I'd call 'External Effects', but in the case of the Line 6 Pod rack, I guess it could be treated as one for re-amping. How would you organize these?
Hi. I don't have a Pod, but had a quick look at the manual, and from what I can see, it doesn't act as an audio interface (happy to be corrected if I read the wrong manual!) - so for that I'd be looking at what interface I'd be plugging the Pod into, and going from there. You certainly could use it as a re-amping interface if you have enough I/O in your audio interface, but in terms of setup, I'd tend to just create the inputs I use regularly and go from there; on my "me in the studio" connections setup, I have a stereo in from my Helix, a Mic in from my TLA preamp, and a couple of "generic stereo" inputs for my audio interface that are from my patchbay if I need to plug anything else in. That covers 90% of my 'working on my own in my studio' applications, but if not then I'll just create the needed changes for the session in question (often this is for making MTT videos). I have a couple of other setups here which mimic client studios to allow me to set projects up for them when I send projects back to them, too. HTH.
@@musictechtuition makes more sense with "mono in" settings right? Because in my ear if i want to record the vocal with "mono in" settings, that sounds is thicker than we using the "stereo in (left/right)" way. Am i right?

Thank you. You’re a very clear instructor. I have an issue wherein, I recorded a song with Halion SE VST Instruments and audio. After Turing my computer off and back on I have no output on the stereo out, I’ve tried everything I could think of. The other songs in my list play fine. Can you tell me what my issue could be? Oh, the audio works fine. Thank you.
Thanks! The problem with issues like that is there are lots of places that the audio can get 'lost', so I'll just run through a quick list: Channel Fader level / automation. Channel mute (automation in particular). Channel output routing (accessible in top section of mixer). HSSE settings: Channel Fader (mix page), Routing (RHS of mix page), HSSE MIDI volume / expression level (from midi/instrument channel data). Hopefully one of those will sort you out.
Thanks for the video! But I have one question: I got a Yamaha MG16XU, and when I select the VST audio system (Yamaha Steinberg USB Asio) it only shows two physical ports (Line 1, Line 2) instead of the 16 that should appear. Do you know what I can do to solve that problem? Thanks in advance for your help!
I just took a quick look at the spec of the MG16XU, and it says "USB with 2 Stereo In-/Output (compatible with iPad Version 2 or higher, Camera Connection Kit required)" - that says to me that it only has two ports, line1, line2 as you're seeing. Many mixers are like this - they are multi-channel in the analogue domain, but only have a stereo in/out over USB. HTH.

Hi Rob. As long as your interface can go low enough in terms of latency (which yours definitely can), then you should be able to achieve what you want by adding effects to either an input channel or the track you want to hear the voice on, and monitoring that channel. You'll then get playback from Cubase while hearing the input (the mic) on the monitored channel. Hi.
