Drawbacks to a magnetic knife block:
Kids - don’t store them that way if kids could grab them.
Cats - beware of putting them where cats could rub against them or lick them.
Dust/grease - if you have some knives you don’t use very often, they could get dirty sitting out exposed for a long time. Not a big deal, but it’s something you don’t need to think about when they’re covered.
Also, crabs could randomly just grab them right off the rack and run amuck in your house threatening everyone!
I had the same thoughts 30 years ago . . . 2 kids and a dozen cats later it was never a problem. As for the dust and grease you are spot on, after about a year I removed the dust and grease collecting knives and put them in cardboard sleeves (cleaned first) and put them in a drawer leaving the seven most used on the magnet. As for the crabs . . . we are to far from the coast for that to be a problem.
Best solution, I would think, is drawer storage with wooden or cardboard sheaths. If drawer space is at a premium then the magnetic plank may be the best option, as well fewer knives would be needed anyway.
That's how my grandpapi died but it was a lobster.

Just to name a few if you didn't know. Can also follow the knife brands directly on their UA-cam channel to get some inside information.
General light to medium use and/or food prep: Full Flat grind (with slightly convexed edge bevel)
General Hard use: Saber Flat grind (with convexed edge bevel)
Hunting / Skining knife: Full Convex grind
Wood working/bushcraft: Scandi grind (with slightly convexed edge bevel)
Tips
Hollow grind: is the cheapest way for a factory to make a blade, because they use 2 big round stones to create the main hollow bevel, which costs way less, than grinding any other type of grind, where you need belts. Belts cost, Belts don't last as long as stone.
Microbevel: is another cheap and fast way to create a sharp edge this time and it doesn't add to the edge stability, as companies claim, to hide the truth. It's still a flat bevel (V edge) which is also burnt from the fast factory belts, which means you still have to remove that burnt steel before use. Those kind of Microbevels, also provide poor cutting geometry, which means you either have to mompletely remove it, or at least, blend that with the main bevel to fix all those issues (edge stability.cutting properly and better)
Geometry: of a blade (thickness and height of a blade, kind of grind etc) also heat treatment, are far more importand than type of steel is. Marketing has turned people, to look for steel as the most important, but it's the last thing you should check on a blade. If the heat treatment is really bad, no matter what steel it is, the knife will be garbage. Same goes for the Geometry of the blade, which is something a bit more complicated, than most people think it is, but it is very important to overlook and only care for the steel.
@@MountainFisher Hollow grind is what cheap knives come with, because it's the cheapest way for a factory to create a bevel (search for details on that) That's where their taste comes from. Market is full of cheap knives, expenisve Hunting knives are less and less, since both the crisis hit and the China filled the market with their cheap stuff. To the point now.
Full convex allows the blade to glide on bones, without the edge hiting them (That will not only saves the edge from damage and getting dull faster, but also allows the blade to work) Convex edge also, provides way more edge stability that a hunting knife needs, otherwise the edge chips or rolls easily, which is not the best thicg to happen when you're out there field dressin an animal for example.
Hollow grinds perform the xact opposite than that. The hollow bevel doesn't the blade glide on bones (when cutting back straps for example,where the side of the blade touches the ribs or the spine bones) Hollow grind always come with flat "V" edge bevels, which can't provide the edge stability a convex can.Actually Hollow grind produce a very thin edge, which is prone to damage.
You can also compare the performance of a Bark River Fox River, with a Buck, which come with hollow grinds. Ask a hunter to field dress a couple of Deers, and then ask him to check both knive's edges.

Regarding the corrosion issue with knives or anything in dishwashers:
You can get dedicated zinc blocks to permanently keep in the dishwasher. The zinc will sacrifice itself by corroding away in place of all the other items in the dishwasher. It works, and the same principal is applied to the hull of ships. They, too, will be fitted with blocks of zinc to prevent the hull from rusting in places, where there might be imperfections in the protective paint.
Try it!
Eldris Light Duty is the best EDC. Highly underrated and much stronger than it looks. The scandi grind along with The handle being longer than the blade, tons of control and razor sharp. blade stays razor sharp for a long time as well

Nah. TS265 is better all the way around. Eldris is good but not best for EDC. Too round not carry friendly.
@@kpfagerberg default is neck knife style although it’s kinda nerdy that way..it hides well doesn’t poke out . Very light weight I don’t notice it. I have thought about getting a custom Kydex sheath from eBay but still it wouldn’t be the greatest with an Ulticlip anyways lol.

I just bought one a few days ago and i agree!! I have a mora companion, bradford guardian 3, esee azula II, esee 4, and Rat 7 but l love that little mora eldris its cheap beater knife but feels so high quality and effective, its just ugly looking like all the other moras, but they are very good products.

As for a bugout with longer handles, those new AD 20.5 knives seem like a good alternative. Bailout is a good choice, too.

When I 1st found BenchMades, I went to buy the bugout because it looked amazing. When I got to the store I saw the bailout, asked to hold it and never gave it back. I love that Bailout!! I did end up grabbing the bugout (for my son)

With dishwashers it's not just the knocking around and the heat. Dishwasher detergent is extremely caustic and contains abrasives - esp. the tablets. Dissolve a dishwasher tablet in water and you'll see the sand/silica abrasive material. Seriously, hand-washing your good knives takes only a couple of minutes and helps keep them in good condition. Also, while knife modding can be fun, for most it's easiest to contact Knife Center and have them help you find a knife that fits. Thanks DCA - another great vid.

Alright DCA, have a challenge for you. Looking to make another unnecessary knife purchase. Here’s what I’m looking for.
1. Just below 4” blade with a decent steel. Shape not picky on, just not a cleaver.
2. Lock that my fingers aren’t in the way when closing
3. Grip that I can actually grab. It can be thin, but needs to be “taller” to still have grip
4. Clean, non-tacticool appearance
5. Deep carry pocket clip (or aftermarket available)
6. Optional, but ideal: Decent finger guard of some sort (finger grooves or flipper that helps prevent hand slipping forward)
Sub $200. Would be nice to have something that’s not as common.

Thank you for continuing to fuel my new addiction with these great videos. I have been looking for a knife to carry while fishing for gutting/prep. Also a multi tool with needle nose thin and long enough to pull hooks, scissors, and tweezers or something for deboning. Not sure if there’s anything that combines a decent knife with any of these options, but any recommendations would be appreciated.
I think Medford would be a fine name for a dog. Also Esse sounds good. Kizer might be a little too aggressive.

For a puppy, Leak would be a good name although you will wish he will outgrow it. Freek would be another good name even if the spelling is wrong. Personally I would go for one of my favorite steel : CruWear. Of course, you are in trouble if your favorite steel is 8Cr13Mov. 😉

DCA: I trying out carrying a fix blade around my house when I am doing some regular fixing/maintenance. I have been trying the ESEE Izula for this, and it works okay - but I wouldn't mind something a little thinner & w/o coating - so it is a bit more slicey. Want it to be good for utility work and have a belly... I wear it vertically on my belt - and like the size of the Izula because it doesn't get in the way - and is long enough to get some work done...

U have been a great help for a while! Thank you. I'm almost a Blade Master. May I offer an idea? City folk can't leave the 3 (three) inch realm of blade length, (I'm in DC). Keeping an edge is a problem for folks who use a knife. Whet Stones are fun but too time consuming...I use a few cheap SAND BELT SYSTEMS (I have diamond, aluminum and whet stones and so on), I think you would do well to investigate, use and review the advantages and problems with the Belt Drives...they are the best quick and lasting edges one can get! Please respond!
I was planning on buying a $1500 rockstead knife, the one with the etched titanium handles and the botton lock but I was really hoping I could find a coupon for even 10% off would be a big help. That would save me the tax plus a little extra. Thanks, Paul.
5:50 Hollow grind: your point about the area behind the edge being vulnerable. I have heard this levelled at hollow grind blades often before. However, in almost every case (this one included) the blade depicted has a very deep and wide hollow, going up almost to the back of the blade! But, not all hollow grinds are done this way! Many tough and durable blades are grownd much more steeply - ie the primary grind bevel is much narrower and less deep, which result almost in a grind very similar to a sabre grind. Such blades look and perform much like sabre grinds too, and can be very durable and tough. They sometimes have quite a large secondary grind at a steepish angle meaning even more steel thickness behind the edge. Such blades a far more robust than a similar sized flat grind, and better at splitting. I wonder if you would care to offer a comment, and point out any flaws in my argument. Much appreciated.
As usual, an excellent discussion for enthusiastic newbies entering the "WEEDS" of the knife genre. Your descriptions should offer up some additional logic regarding initial choices for EDC or specific tasks.
If you load the dishwasher carefully and correctly, you reduce the risk of damaging knives you put in it. Most people who use dishwashers don’t know the correct way to load them (or don’t care). That said, I still don’t recommend washing knives in a dishwasher. They are quite easy to wash by hand, anyway. If a knife has a wood handle, don’t even think about putting it in a dishwasher. If you’re ever tempted to put anything wooden in an automatic dishwasher, just throw it in the trash instead.

David, speaking of blade grinds- What is the purpose of a chisel grind? My Snody designed Ka-bar BOSS sports one. I use it to trim the ends of my cigars off (flat side towards the body). I know that sharpening one is done only on the angled side, then stropping the flat side.
I've always wondered this too
It makes the “behind the edge thickness“ better, instead of two bevel shoulders, there is only one, so it will slice better.

Question years ago in a fishing show I bought a Spydeco metal n ceramic stick sharpener n have been happily using it on all my knives . It’s just a simple running it straight down a 45 degree angle. Hey DCA (shush Thomas :P) what would be you best leather sheathe / fixed blade combination for multi-week expeditions in the Wild Canadian North? Expecting wet conditions, canoe flipping over, so that sheathe must be strangling that blade tight until called upon. Curious to see your budget pick, as well as your "money is no object" pick. Bonus points for real rustic woodsman aesthetics! Thanks for all the free knowledge!
If you don't have the means to give your knife a true convex edge, you can approximate it with secondary bevels.
Try re-profiling your edge down to 15 degrees and refine it with progressively finer stones. Then do the same at 17.5 degrees, and then the same at 20 degrees. Finish it off with a thorough stropping, and you have an edge with a nice stoutness behind it, almost like a convex one would have.
Hey DCA! Love the work you guys do! Was wondering: kind of interested in getting a hori hori style knife in the future, being as my career choice is an archaeologist. I’m hoping to use it in the field and have an edge as well. My only problem, how do I eventually sharpen that edge, as it is sharp on one side and scoops out into a shovel on the other side?

MAN! When talking about the Benchmade Bailout, and grinding one into a drop point blade I was thinking. OMG! No way! I'd try that on a Benchmade:) HA! Of course, I have zero experience in that type of modification, I'd most definitely buy one or two gas station specials to get some practice:) LOL!
Just sharpening while ignoring the point will result in a drop point after a few sharpenings.
Hey DCA, What would you recommend for an auto under $200? Can be OTF or side opening. Main factor being fit and finish, and fidget factor. Size and materials are a bit more secondary. I’ve looked at everything from the pro tech runt, to the Kershaw launch 11.

I am just recently entertaining the idea of a pocket fixed blade. I have not seen any fixed blades that have a clip on the handle of the knife and just a sheath to cover the blade. I think I would like a design like that. I have a couple of small fixed blades that have pocket clips on the sheath, and one MKM with the little magnet clip thing. I just would like the knife to be further in my pocket than it is with knives I have. If the pocket clip was on the handle of the knife it would sit further down in the pocket. Do you know of anything like this?Thanks.

Convex-ground knife blades are rather rare, at least on the knives I see.
I like a flat grind. I’ve never used a knife with a convex grind, so I don’t know if it’s better or worse than other blade grinds.

Manix/Ontario/Praxis/Nitro(Nitro-V)/Arcane/Randall/Wharny(Wharncliffe) seem like some unique but not too outrageous knife names for doggos!
Hey DCA, Thomas and Seth! My EDC for the past year has been the very budget friendly SOG Terminus XR with OD green G-10 scales and D2 steel. It seems to get very little mention any more, and gets swept under the rug by the Terminus XR Lite, or the Benchmade Bugout, which are both considerably more expensive. I just want people to know that value for money, I've yet to find its equivalent. D2 rules!
It's my perfect EDC knife as well! I was so impressed, that I bought the S35VN version too (not the LTE). I like the steel liners and that little extra weight isn't a problem for me.
Yuppers I carry mine sometimes. I got the s35vn version for 65 Bucks on sale. Great deal on that knife. I love the knife and was able to fix everything that I didn't like about it.
My big boy Akita (120 pounds of love) was named Katana.

For tanto profiles. Is it just the pointed belly that makes a tanto or is it the scandi-like flat and thickness before the geometry of the two bevels?

Hey DCA and Crew, Have a question about Buck's 110/112 slim and lt. Why do those models have a bump at the back of the blade and front of the lockbar? I don't see the bump on the regular models. Are they trying to distinguish the less expensive from the normal priced models??? I've ground down the bumps on my 112 slim and like the results, feels fine to my thumb but is noticeable to the eye.

I would say a big disadvantage of a magnetic knife holder is magnetizing the blade, which can be undesirable for some applications.

Hey DCA, first of all, big fan and I have learned a ton from you show! Thank you for all the tips and tricks. My question is, my brother is a sinistral citizen (left handed) and he's getting married, I am the best man and I'm looking for a nice knife that's fitting for a wedding present, budget under $200 and good for someone who does both camping and for edc as well, preferably a good folder or smaller fixed. No preference on brand but something kinda both camp and gentleman if that exists. A bonus if you can recommend some budget option that I can get for the groomsmen that go with his but obviously not as nice lol. Thanks for all the awesome episodes and all the best!! A Spyderco para 2 left handed for the groom and Spyderco tenacious for the groomsmen. Actually, artisan has some good options for that as well. Titanium versions for the groom and budget for the groomsmen. there are a couple of sog series like the terminus that have similar high end and budget friendly brothers. They are xr locks so ambidextrous with 2 way tip up carry. That said, Benchmade would work as well, but they don't really have a groomsmen priced option. Not less than about 100 bucks.
curious what you went with...the Fallkniven line up is classy looking enough to qualify as gentlemanly, while they're easily robust enough for serious camp work. The R2 is smaller, more subtle, but the F1 with satin finish would be my recommendation. I like fixed blades for southpaws, as they're naturally left-handed. For the groomsmen, the Civivi Elementums have a similar classy look, half the price and seem pretty rugged. if I were a groomsmen, I'd be hoping for a Condor Krakatoa, but that's just me.... :-)
Hey DCA, I bought a Victorinox Bantom awhile back and love, but I like your I think its tge R-18 m your yellow and black one I'd like it to have a wood saw also and ib OD Green and black. Do you have one like that?
