PICO-8 is great! I guess I'll dump a few of my favorites here: * Subsurface - a short but fun metroidvania * NEMO/NEMO 2 - fun nonogram (Picross style) games * Celeste Classic (and Celeste Classic 2) - maybe a bit cliche, but it's a challenging platformer, and what the full game was based on * Just One Boss - a game where you fight one boss with some twists along the way * UFO Swamp Odyssey - exploration focused platformer There are a ton of great games out there.
wow, you're really good at these!! so much info in such a short time, engaging and no filler, and you seem to focus on the aspects of the games that are important instead of using some formula, well done!
You might already know about it, but if enjoy the Mario and Luigi rpg games, you gotta check out frozen knights. Man there’s so many fun pico 8 games, I am drawing a blank on more suggestions…
Great list. Kalikan is such a superb shmup. I'd also recommend a vampire card game called High Stakes. It's a simple mix of minesweeper and russian roulette.
Love Pico8 and it's retro graphics. Currently making my own game (well learning to make my own game) Will be getting Picotron soon and hope there will be a way to play games from that on my RGB30.
@adinwalls yep! 🤓 I noticed the transitions didnt work as they should though. It uses a new feature in PICO-8 that emulators like fake-08 aren't updated to display properly yet. But if you are using it on the RGB30, it should work fine. Maybe its just running an older version of PICO-8?
@@adinwalls yeah, all those builds will want to be updated to handle any games coming out this year since they will likely use the new functions like mine. Until then, I could release an updated version that is more compatible with those emulators but I'm not sure where best to offer it to people wanting to put it on their handhelds or androids.
Great video, one piece of constructive criticism I have is to make the fade out for your intro faster. It's a little weird looking to see you talking at like half alpha as the intro is fading out with you walking in that tunnel lol
Steam deck (all my “serious” games, Odin 2 for PS2 and below (I don’t actually own one so I use the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro here) and the Miyoo Mini Plus for a simple, compact 16 bit solution (in reality I use the Powkiddy RGB30 but I think the Miyoo Mini Plus is a better recommendation)
Hey man I talk about this in the video I am working on today. Unfortunately yes, Jelos official support has come to an end. But their files are still available to use. Fortunately Jelos was pretty mature so Powkiddy are still shipping with it for now. You just won’t be getting any updates. Which is fine.
Thanks for clearing that up for me. Sadly i wouldn't be able to purchase the device until June, and by then they might not be shipping it with jelos. I might end up looking for another handheld that runs pico-8 without any problems. Looking forward to that video though 😁
Does anyone know how to fix: “could not connect to the bps” and “future version please update”. My RGB30 does this more often than not and it puts me off bothering with pico-8 (it has worked before and I can’t get any answers searching online). :(
The future version thing is still something I haven’t sorted out (maybe we just need to manually update it?) but the could not connect error just means your WiFi is disconnected or not working well.
If you use Pico 8 natively there are no save states. It is purposefully designed to feel like a modern Gameboy. And yes the games are often quite difficult.
But if you use a RetroArch FAKE-08 core, you may use save states. This is the only way I play Pico 8 honestly. At times compatibility may be a problem - for some games an older version might work, but a newer version will crash, but they are quite rare.
Ddownwards is a simplified version of Downwell (even though thats also a pixelgame) And the chicken game doesn't resemble Celeste but is a 'copy' of Super Meat Boy, even including the grinders. Solid list though, all goed games!
I like pico 8, was trying to justify an RGB30 just for pico 8 and gameboy/GBC, but I just... get bored with pico 8 too quickly. The games are just too limited in file size, pallette, and control scheme. I know the whole point is that they're easy and fast to make games for, but I just want a TINY bit more out of them, like a 16 bit system with a larger file size possible. I feel like that would be just the right amount of ease of development along with breathing room to really explore what a game can do, and take advantage of a few more buttons than a D pad and A/B for developers who have a little more ambition.
Lexaloffle recently released an alpha for their 16-bit fantasy workstation, which might solve some of your issues with Pico-8, though people still need to learn to develop for it.
terrible graphics? Low-tech looking? Yes. But terrible? No! Also, Pico-8 chooses to look that way. I see the person who made the "terrible graphics" comment doesn't understand why people want retro emulation handhelds.
Timestamps never loaded properly. Will fix shortly!
*_"MY"_* 5 cool Pico-8 games?
I was led to believe you programmed them.
Nice choices, they look like fun games. Added to the endless backlog.
Isn't fixed...
Love Pico8! Awesome choices, a few I didn't know about, will check em out!
Thanks! Ya I’ve slowly become a fan.

Subsurface yes so good

Wow, thank you!

thanks love your content!
I appreciate that!
Missed you and TechDweeb on yesterday live

Retro Handhelds channel with Stubbs, Ban, Aish and Russ from RGC@@adinwalls
Yeah that's it.@@janX9
Fellow South African! Where do you get your handhelds from?
GoGameGeek
You should look into the port master stuff. That and Pico-8 have been the reason i kept my RGB30 despite owning a RP4P.
Ya port master was all the rage before my time in the scene. I should get into it.
Great list. Kalikan is such a superb shmup. I'd also recommend a vampire card game called High Stakes. It's a simple mix of minesweeper and russian roulette.
I'll check it out!

Cool! Let me know when you have a game in the works.
Air Delivery is one I hadn't checked out yet. It's so cute! I will definitely download and check it out. I love all the other ones you mentioned
Please do! I like these shorter games.
Fantastic list of games! I'm really glad you enjoy Puzzles of the Paladin and thanks for recommending it to others. 🤓
Wait are you the dev?!

And the native work around on Android? Same issue? Anyway so glad to meet you. Well done on the game, I really enjoy Pico 8

Yes that does make it tricky

Enjoy your vids!
Thanks man
miiyoo mini with onion can also play pico8 games now too
Yup already made a video about that! 😊
I can a-ffirm that marble merger is quite a fun game to play, the squishiness of the marbles is incredible
Hey man thank for checking out the video
Oh ! What a lovely TechDweeb style character standing next to that Rgb30 ! Love it !
It was drawn by Sir Dweeb himself.
Air Delivery is my fav so far, awesome soundtrack as well
Ah cool. I’m realising now I’ve always played it with the sound off!
Hi Adin, I just want to ask - if you could only keep 3 devices, which would you keep and what would be their use case?
Steam deck (all my “serious” games, Odin 2 for PS2 and below (I don’t actually own one so I use the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro here) and the Miyoo Mini Plus for a simple, compact 16 bit solution (in reality I use the Powkiddy RGB30 but I think the Miyoo Mini Plus is a better recommendation)
I heard that JelOS dropped support for the rgb30 and/or it's chipset.
Would that be a problem if i bought a new rgb30 and used it for pico-8?

0:12 Because it's a *"RETRO HANDHELD"*
THANKS MAN!!!

:(
The future version thing is still something I haven’t sorted out (maybe we just need to manually update it?) but the could not connect error just means your WiFi is disconnected or not working well.
Thanks so much for that. Should I reset the device, or is there an easier way to refresh the Wifi connection?
You shouldn’t need to. As long as you’ve gone into wireless settings and connected to your WiFi you should be fine.
These look like fun. Will check some of them out
Cool!
Pico 8 games are generally a bit tricky I found. Very old school feel difficulty wise and no save on anbernic version that I’ve found anyway.
If you use Pico 8 natively there are no save states. It is purposefully designed to feel like a modern Gameboy. And yes the games are often quite difficult.

Loved everything except Monk. Where's the knife?
Haha. Each to their own I guess. Ah I used my knife to open a package and forgot it on my other desk.
Can you do top 15 hidden gem gba games one could be alien hominid
Hehe ya I don't know. I like these vids but I just don't have a deep enough knowledge so it will take a fair amount of research for me.
PCBway is amazing!
Great pics too! I'll check a few out🙂
Hey you actually were making a RGB30 video, bruh. Awesome!
Yeah I did
Ddownwards is a simplified version of Downwell (even though thats also a pixelgame)
And the chicken game doesn't resemble Celeste but is a 'copy' of Super Meat Boy, even including the grinders.
Solid list though, all goed games!
Coincidentally my wife and I are watching Monk again from start to finish and of course I play games meanwhile lol
Haha that’s funny. It’s a cool show.
Adin, you have to hold the knife again. That's so iconic
lol okay!

@belak512 sounds amazing, hopefully it takes off like pico 8 did!
WOW!!
Monk is a great show, good choice.
Hehe yes!
Pico8 is so awesome and fun!!
It is!
I can't remember the name of the device you have there.. Rgb30?
That screen is amazing!
Yes RGB30. And yes, the screen is excellent
Good Pico 8 games have incredible graphics.
Truth!
Games?! Who buys RH's to play games 😅
lol. Mkay
