This is rad! As a big tama fan, what I'd like to see added is care-based evolution trees for the pets as well as less 'real world' animal designs and more just weird little guys like the traditional tama design. I think the battle system looks cool and the overall interface is really neat! Have you thought of having a breeding/generation system that uses inherited 'genetic' traits like the Tama M!x?
Yeah the evolution thing was definitely something I missed out on that would've been good to implement. The breeding system seems cool for sure, but would definitely be a decently big undertaking to add to the game
This looks great! I was also obsessed with tamagotchis as a kid. It's interesting to hear your thought process and game design decisions, and the final result with the grid-based battle system influenced by what you feed your pet was very clever - looks to be an addicting addition, keep up the great work! Subscribed awhile back, always looking forward to seeing more (and your continued work on the roguelite)!
You did a job well enough to have me purchase your game. As an old-school fan of both Tamagotchi and Megaman Battle Network, this game hits the right spots. Your game making vlogs are very inspiring, and I would love to develop a game myself one day. Thank you for your content. ❤
Very cool. Love that you keep doing different things with the Playdate and the end result looks so polished! I said it before in a different video but once I have mine I'll play all your games.
Well worth the 2 week effort. The narrative was entertaining to watch throughout the video. Also, "I ran this picture through a dithering algorithm" has got to be the catchphrase of this series of videos xD
Overall, I am really impressed by how quickly you can put thinkgs together, gather assets, do the animation and make the sound effects. Any tips on how to efficiently use Aseprite or make sounds ? :)
Well the main thing is I always try to find assets first for both art and sfx - that saves tons of time. Otherwise, for Aseprite or art in general I think the main issue is getting art block, so to make sure I don't get blocked I always look at references, keep iterating even if I feel stuck, and try out things to make sure I'm making progress. For sounds, I try to imagine a sound in my head and go through UA-cam and freesound.org and trying to think of things to look up that's related to that sound in my head, and keep trying different prompts if I can't find it, and then bringing it into Audacity and experiment with just pitch/tempo/speed and reverb. It's all momentum based - just need to keep working
This really brings me back. Tamagotchi was part of my childhood! I remember having one of the really old ones as well as some of the newer ones as the years went on. The DS game too. I miss those things. I don’t even know where my Tamagotchi are today, but I’m pretty sure they’re all dead now… May they rest in peace.
2:22 Why not just make the clouds move very slowly to the right and the moon wobble slightly up and down? Tiny movements like that make a scene feel more dynamic.
As someone who absolutely loves Tamagotchis since childhood, I really love your take on the original games! What I would personally add are collectible toys and items which the pet can interact with. On original Tamagotchis, the pets had evolutions that determined whether the pet was a toddler, kid, adolescent, or adult and according to this it went to school, could use different items (or interact with the ones it could previously use differently) and even get a job! Since you used animals I don't think it would make sense to add evolutions, but maybe it could be level based? It would definitely motivate people to level up to unlock more content. So yeah, items, schools (which depended on the Tamagotchi skills such as kindness, style and intelligence), and jobs would make the game more coherent with elder Tamagotchis, I think most of the things I mentioned were added between version 3 and 4. Also, look up Tamagotchi town, I don't know if you can make something similar here but as a child, I would spend a lot of time connecting my Tamagotchis to the tama-town website to get unique items, events, and rewards.
Dude how are you able to come up with so many creative ideas? The biggest thing that holds me back into even attempting game development is the fact that the most difficult part seems to be coming up with actual fun ideas that others would enjoy
Not sure what it comes across like in the video, but I just took some ideas from existing games and put a small twist on them, so nothing too crazy! Your first games shouldn't try to be for others, but just something for yourself. The game will probably be simple and not fun at first, but that's expected - it's supposed to be iterated on. You shouldn't let that hold you back from starting!
I was looking for a good virtual pet game and this is the best one yet so I’m planning I get a play date for Christmas also I really like all your other games and I make sure I watch each one of your videos.
Dude. Your video made me really excited and I was ready to try to make a Digimon version but then I remembered there’s already a wonderswan version or any of the handheld games.
I absolutely love this! I'm a massive fan of Pokémon games and I noticed the farming mechanics is actually a little similar to how berries operate within the Pokémon games. I think it'd be cool if different items you're farming take different amounts of time. You could add stages of growth and watering the plants regularly as they progress would give you more food items. Your plant wouldn't need to die just because you didn't water it. That kind of a mechanic could be implemented, but I feel it'd only make sense on rarer food items that give special effects.
dude., the whole point of the thing is that if you unatend it, it dies! If it's not like that, you loose all the thrill , therefor, the point of the actual game. Life is rash dude
I was too young when these came out but my sisters had them and I thought they were so cute. years later I'm a fan of Pokemon and even more years later, they remake Gold and Silver and include one of these little guys basically. I've wanted Pokemon to bring another one of these guys back with more functionality when away from the main games. this seems like the perfect solution
@@luckerooni1153the Pokéwalker should've had more functionality. Apparently you were supposed to be able to receive distribution Pokemon on it but the function was never used
When I got my playdate last week, it was one of the first things to think of; how cool would it be to have a tamagotchi on the device. I could only encourage you to put more time into this, as I can see many people paying 6-10 bucks for this!
I love tamagotchi and I have a couple ideas, One is that you could use your Gems to get clothing for your pet. Another idea is maybe some sort of treasure hunting mini game we’re your pet searches a large garden and if you turn the crank the pet can sniff and search for the treasure or something. One final idea is (I’m not sure if it’s possible for Playdate) to make the mini game you already have multiplayer. Thanks for reading
As someone who also bought a tamagotchi that has been going strong for nearly two weeks now (Thanks to me learning about being able to pause it while I'm at work) I love this concept! I really miss all the old virtual pet sims like Petz and Nintendogs. I think one huge thing missing is the evolution mechanics. A huge draw to tamagotchis was learning about the different paths and taking care of them to see what they would turn into. Without that mechanic I feel like it'd be easy to play the game for an hour and then never pick it up again.
I had a tomagachi as a kid with a whole bunch of mini games that you could unlock as you played and they would reward money that you could spend on food and more games.
I love this project! I had the blue diginmon and some kind of dalmatian one when I was about 5 or 6 and now I kinda miss them. Might have to check one of these out. Thanks!
Only thing I can see from this video, not playtesting it, is that the pixels in the mini game get a little cluttered and confusing when moving around. Maybe add a white border around the pet sprite or something to make visibility a little better? Seems like the game getting fast paced would really suffer from issues of ineffectively seeing what's going on.
Really cool! I've also started playing with a tamagotchi and I think I enjoy the passive caring you have to do for it, but it's really cool how you're adapting it for a more active play session. Have you considered (if you even can) adding a clock to work with the game so you can see your pet while the game is in standby mode? I'm not sure if that is even possible but it'd be cool to still have that passive caring through out the today you have to do.
I really love this! :O I'm probably going to buy a playdate specifically for this since I'm very into collecting v-pets ^-^ (and the playdate is actually cheaper than some tamagotchi models x.x )
This is great! But I am a huge digimon buff and when I saw you talk about the digimon battle system I was hoping there would be a more standard formula, maybe later on you can have different foods have different advantages against monsters, or maybe you could make the monsters possible to get!
Digimon definitely has some interesting ideas with their combat. Don't have any plans currently for any updates, but luckily there's a lot of space for other devs to make different virtual pet games for the Playdate.
This is great. The only thing I would expect from a modern game is just more content. But very great for a free game made on a short timeline. Being able to customize the pet a bit with decorations or accessories would be great. Maybe more types of items that so different thing as well to give the game a bit more variety.

Yeah that's a great point and feedback I got from some other people too. How the code is set up I think that I can more easily add some sort of breeding mechanic, for example if you have a snake and a chicken both at level ten they can be bred to make a dragon or something. Evolution might be more complex and require rewriting more code, so I was hesitant to add it, but might be worth it if the breeding isn't interesting enough?
Another issue is backwards compatibility with the save files that people have now, which breeding doesn't have an issue with, but evolution might need to have some way to handle that. Might be able to think of a solution for that but not sure
Back in the day on Phantasy Star Universe on Xbox you could download a Chao Sonic mini game onto your GBA. It was like tamagotchi in a way but the mini game was the greatest. It was a form of rock, paper, scissors and I've never seen it anywhere else. It would be great to see that remade
Music I just found on opengameart.org. Sound effects is I just imagine a sound that seems right in my head, look up stuff on freesound.org until I find it, and the put it into audacity and add a little bit of post processing based on what's needed (reverb, adding multiple sounds together, cutting it up, bass boost, pitch shifting, etc.). Sometimes I generate sounds on sfxr.me as well.
scrap that, its in phase 5 which means basically it's pretty much that you can get it anywhere.. except Malaysia (I feel bad for you). Anyway, got one because of your video that I first watched about it! thanks
Thanks! Yeah I got some feedback about that when I made this video. I did end up making a follow-up update/devlog where I introduced a basic form of the evolution system.
Is there a version of this, but with color like the Gameboy Color, or the early DS? I'm on the hunt to make my own Tamagotchi (while also learning how to program in Python), and I'm enjoying the Raspberry Pi (but there's so much to set up first). This seems like a fun alternative.
That would be cool, but I think it's not physically possible in the current form factor because of how thin it is. Luckily the battery lasts super long.
thats awesome, i would have like to have evolutions just like digimon but i know that would be a lot more sprites and way more time. still, pretty cool how much you were able to do in such a short amount of time. wish i had a playdate
So amazing. Really shows you don't need HD graphics or huge maps to get rich gameplay. Out of curiosity, have you ever played the Gameboy game Survival Kids? I think you'd dig it.

small bird can turn into duck, chicken, bat, big bird or phoenix

@@SquidGodDev 👍👍 definitely subbed
@@SquidGodDev Oh, also love your correct Japanese pronunciation 😆
i still hate that the crank doesnt power the battery
That would be cool, but I think it's not physically possible in the current form factor because of how thin it is. Luckily the battery lasts super long.
thats awesome, i would have like to have evolutions just like digimon but i know that would be a lot more sprites and way more time. still, pretty cool how much you were able to do in such a short amount of time. wish i had a playdate
For some reason people called them "Tamagoochi" where I lived when these things first came out. I still cannot figure out why.
I've heard a few pronunciations before, but this is by far the worst 🤣
Amazing , how don’t you have over 100k subs already .. your game creation is great along with your videos. Keep up the good work ..
Thank you! I'll keep improving my content so I can hit 100k!
This is the first game that's actually made me interested in buying a playdate.
Honored that you think so!
This is badass!! Sold!!
This is a really cute game! I think I would personally like to hear a more retro sound style but it's still really great!
Tamagotchi is so nostalgic ❤
if i ever get a playdate in my little hands, i want to get this
When these things came out they were all the rage, sold out everywhere.
I wanted one so bad as a kid 😅
So amazing. Really shows you don't need HD graphics or huge maps to get rich gameplay.
Out of curiosity, have you ever played the Gameboy game Survival Kids? I think you'd dig it.
Nope, but looks cool!
Very cool dude, good job
