Well that chance is gone. The fact that Argentina and Portugal dropped out of the world cup is just proof how much of a team sport this is. One guy can't carry a team on his shoulders.

How often people forget that association football is a TEAM sport, and you cannot judge an individual player's *merit* by how many trophies he's won with his *team.*
Another thing people basically never bring into account is the fact that the World Cup is MUCH harder to win than it used to be. The number of highly competitive teams has increased *exponentially* since the 1960s/50s. Brazil have won 5 World Cups, that is true. They won *three* of them when Pele was on the team, and they've only won two since Pele retired, and in the time since then, competition has become FAR tougher.
Numbers simply don't tell the whole story in sports.
Yes but the question isn't whether Messi or Ronaldo are good players. The question is whether or not they are GREAT. You can't be great if you don't win the highest prize in your sport. Dan Marino, Karl Malone, Jerry West, and many others were good in their sport, but they'll never be great because they never won it all.
If you're telling me Messi or Ronaldo are good players, cool story. You want to ask if they're great? Come back when they've won something that matters. Until then you can add Ronaldo and Messi to the list of losers who weren't good enough to get the job done.

you can't compare the world cup to the world series or nba finals. it's not the same at all. there is pretty much no equivalant to the world cup in american sports, the closest thing is the champions league which they have both won multiple times.

In this way, Ronaldo surpassed him, not with his skills, but his drive.
Sometimes individual players attract so much attention, cause so much disturbance, throw themselves so hard at the objective that mediocre teammates have more space and more heart to play better.
Get rid of the mentality of “this player has this many trophies” and you have your answer. The player has the medal, not the trophy. Winning any tournament in football is a team effort. This is a team sport, not an individual sport. Teams win trophies, not players.

Simply both Messi and Ronaldo are playing in a generation where individual greatness is above team greatness. Argentina blew the perfect chance in Brazil 2014 world cup to Germany in the final. Portugal despite being the current European champions cannot hang tough with the big countries. So they are two iconic players that their respective national teams fall short or cannot take the next big step. It's their national teams that are to blame. Messi and Ronaldo individual greatness does not indicate that their national teams career has fallen short. One single player cannot dominate and carry a national team. Give Messi and Ronaldo a break

Ro Na you should REALLY invest in trying to learn where the players come from. It's not only Ronaldo. Patricio is one of the best goalkeepers in Europe, and he plays for a big team in Portugal even though they're small in the champions league. Porto and Benfica are some of the biggest names you can see in Europe. Sporting is the biggest academy to bring big names out, two of them: Ronaldo and Figo. Most of the players in the Portugal squad are on big teams, you have players from Barcelona, Real Madrid, Napoli, Inter, AC Milan, etc. And we are not one of the big countries, but we're not that much smaller than Spain, France or Germany

there is no comparing them, its already impossible to actually name the best football player at this time as comparing a deffender to an attacker is already impossible. Let alone compare players that played nearly an age apart. The ball is different, the whole game is different.
But if you had to, i would say nearly all players are better than the players of the past. They wheren't that fit, didn't train as much, still smoked, tackitics wheren't as developed, etc.
first of al maradona is a whole lot later than pele, but even then. players from the 70/80's wouldn't stand a chance against the players of today fisically. you just look at the matches compared to the players at that time, what you are doing is comparing players compared to the other players of that time. But i bet that if you look at the statistics as in how much they ran, how hard they could run, how hard they ran on avarage. they would all be lower that the avarage player of today. Thinking that players from that time, that did not grow up as little kids beeing trained like professionals all their life, did not think about what they ate and still even smoked could fisically compare to players of today.
