It's nice that there's commercially available ammo that adhere's to power factor. Velocity floor chasing is usually the first reason to get a chrono bc people think theyll have an advantage with less recoil. That isnt the whole story. The trick is going to be whether you need a specific load length along with the inevitable spring and parts tuning while "optimizing". So many people have no idea how projectile weight, power type, pistol springing, mag tuning, hard parts interactions can really improve the feel of your overall experience until they do it.

In IDPA non chorno club matches I run 115g through my rival's ported barrel... Chrono on it was like 109 pf XD but I run cheap 115g ammo. To make bare min pf for me had to run 124g. USPSA I run my non ported barrel 147 at about ~130 pf. I do like that I can stay competitive with the rival in idpa with just 1 barrel swap with all the XCs and generally 2011s running around these days.
I have been trying to find a Rival -S barrel to send and get ported! I had to send my Rival -S to Canik for warranty work and they changed my original barrel and it's eating everything now
I think it's harder to tune ignition for feel using power factor floor ammo.
There's just more to work with in a hammer fired system. There's mechanical interference you can speed up or slow down for "feel".
The rest is just tuning ignition with powder type and spring to finish off the "feel"
I haven’t had a chance to try this with a Rival, but what you’re saying makes total sense. Whatever 115g though comes out to 109 PF has very, very, very slow burning powder… is this some of the steel cased stuff?
Also, curious on your ported barrel setup if you don’t mind sharing? (How many ports as well as how soon the first ports start from the camber)

Thanks for the discussion and info. I like the Super Vel new and I am few hundred reloads deep with maybe 1 light strike hard to complain they are a great company!
I will say this… I have had occasional challenges with the reloaded ammo… but I’ve had some good conversations with their Customer Service and have always been open to both feedback and an equitable remedy

Ive started to use Black Dot Ammunition and its been a very consistent accurate load. Been shooting 147gr. in my Canik Rival S. Just bought some 124gr. to see how it performs. Also love Fenix 147 gr. 1st time i shot it thought my gun didnt fire. Extremely soft shooting.
I should’ve probably mentioned a little more about Black Dot… they also roll-size their cases… giving a near-new like dimensions. I’ve generally had good experiences with Black Dot and they’re one of the few the offer solid Major loads (9 major) for a good price
Something you missed is the difference in chamber tightness (tighter chamber = higher velocity), and rifling (lands and grooves are slower than polygonal rifling). Those can shift velocities as much as 100 fps.

If you had to pick just one brand & weight of factory 9mm FMJ for any full size striker fired pistol for IDPA & USPSA, what would it be?
Blazer 115 Aluminum… goes bang everytime out of every gun and makes power factor.
Syntech 150 is only second because I like faster projectiles out of small comp setups

Officially, yes. In the years Ive shot my local matches... I can't recall Chrono ever happening.
Back in the early 80's when I competed in the UKPSA, Major Power Factor was based on .45 ACP Military ball ammo. 230 gr at 830 fps. A PF of 190. I shot a 200 gr hard cast semi wadcutter bullet at just under 1,000 fps. At that time Practical shooting still adhered to Jeff Cooper's definition of a defensive handgun and ammo, and concealed carry. How sad to see PS turn into a gun game using Race guns and squid loads. IDPA was introduced to counter this trend. Seems now even IDPA has wimped out.
I shoot my old M1911A1 with ammo like that… it’s a “yee-haw” experience for me. But it’s interesting to watch guys that load gamer loads for 45… there’s an old folk story in our area… guy loaded a 45 round so light that it didn’t even break the cardboard… everyone that day couldn’t stop laughing hard enough
What’s your experience with aluminum case vs. brass? Does it matter? I love my Tulammo 😂
