I am a vegetarian who eats primarily plant based and I also use second hand leather and wool for sustainability reasons. I do feel weird about it sometimes though when I am eating a vegan meal in a restaurant in my leather jacket and shoes, so I always have mixed feelings about it. Ultimately I think it is okay because I am not supporting the industries, I am simply using what is already there and will last me a long time :)

I'm 53 and I'm still wearing a mustard sweater that my dad passed his driving test in in 1957. The knit is very tight, I think my grandmother might have knitted it.

I think it's easier to have a personal style if you shop in charity shops. The fast fashion shops all sell the same styles in the same colours, it's so boring.
I once lost an earring on my way to work and found it the following day on my way to work again!

I really like your style and I think you show so well that second hand and thrifted vintage clothing can be stylish af! One of my favourite clothing items to wear is my grandmas red leather blouse from the 80s. Still as good as new and I always get compliments for it when wearing it 🎉

Absolutely love the fashionable outfits you put together from 2nd hand clothes!! Kudos to you for standing in your truth as a vegan that wears animal based products!! We need more people to sing the praises of 2nd hand, reviving individual style, keeping precious items out of the landfills & creating a non-capitalistic economy!! You continue to be a badass, cheers to you!!! 🥂🥂

My favorite clothing item is a red kimono jacket that I got from my mom. She spent some time in Japan in the 80s and someone there made it for her because she was too tall for any of the clothes in the stores. I’ve basically been living in it this winter. I’ve gotten multiple complements while wearing it.
Also, recently my boyfriend’s mom gave us this sheep pelt. It kind of gives me the ick if I think about it too much but if I don’t, I just appreciate its softness and warmth. So definitely mixed feelings

I loved all of your looks 😍😍😍😍. I have a dress that was made for my mother in law in the early 80's and my daughter has a down jacket that was her dad's in 1986! It's so cool 😎 and warm, this is the first year that it has fitted her, she just turned 9. I buy pretty much all of my clothes second hand, there are days that my whole outfit is second hand. We went snowboarding a few weeks ago and all of my snow gear, is second hand 😊. I am thinking of buying a new long winter coat, it will be second hand. It takes longer to sometimes find pieces that you like, which most people are not willing to wait for that, but I remember as a kid going to a seamstress to get clothes made for me and I liked going in for the fittings and the anticipation of the new item 😊. We all need to step back and really think 🤔 about what we are buying.

I once met the person who donated the shoes I was wearing while we were in line waiting for coffee! She said she liked them but recently donated them and I was like, "Then these were probably yours, thank you!" I wish I could fit things that were my grams or my moms older wardrobe, but I am built very differently as well as bigger, but also shorter, so there is no tailoring any of that stuff (I know, I used to go into my moms closet allllll the time and struggled to fit into things as a teen, definitely a no go as an adult who has had two kiddos and chronic issues).

Love these outfits. When you said you didn't know what to do with your hair, it suddenly hit me how wavy your hair really is. Have you ever tried the "curly girl" method of scrunching it with conditioner and not brushing it out? It might curl up quite a lot. (But I am not at all trying to tell you that your current hairstyle is anything other than lovely.)

I buy wool clothing secondhand as a vegan. It seems most Americans don't like wool. I have a wardrobe full of it. All in excellent condition. My favorite to find is Aran Irish merino wool. I have even bought worn out wool to felt and make dish scrubbies, warm shoe insoles, cat toys/beds...you name it. Love my vintage wool blankets too! I have cats so wool blankets and fur don't mix. I make my own duvet covers out of old cotton sheets/curtains. Voila! Fur free wool blankets! Loved this video ❤

I'm American and I love wool. Thrifted a camel colored 90's coat two years ago and it is the warmest thing ever! A little too big for me, but I got it anyway because I know how durable wool is. Of course, I only buy pre-loved and vintage wool items. I like all the uses you have found for it too.

@@Rachel-hf5ub It is but not like in Europe where I met my hubby and lived for years. It's a staple there. Wool rugs, blankets, clothing outerwear and unfortunately sheep skins. All I meant was it's not as common here as I have seen in those countries.

    Hello dear Gittemary!
I really enjoy your content! You are never judgemental, sometimes I am to be honest. I try my very best to buy second hand all the time or do clothes swap parties. Also I love to wear old enherited things from my family. The other day I had an argument with a very good friend, who does not care about the impact of fast fashion. We had kind of a fight (not really) and he said: you wear dead people's shoes! We laughed so hard! And: yes! I do wear dead peoples stuff and i'am good with this decision. I give these things a chance and I am kind of limited to find good and unique items because I' m plus size. This "limitation" makes me creative in putting outfits together and finding my own style. I really hope more people see a quality in this approach to dress well, unique and comfortable. Have a very nice weekend❤

I love your style and this type of videos! I agree that the most sustainable outfit is what you already have, even if it is from animal materials. Vintage is the best way to go, because the quality is amazing. Thanks a lot for sharing and most of all, making choices based on yourself.

I identify as a vegan, too. And I also own (second hand) clothes made of animals. I love the quality and feel conflicted at the same time.
Because wearing a unique style also means other people see you in your cool Leather Jacket and they will probably buy new ones for themselves.
So I try looking extra cool in my faux Leather Stuff and always recommend buying vegan Boots and shopping second hand for the best finds.
It's like eating animal products: I can't do it anymore if I think too much about what I'm doing and the harm caused. Thinking about rabbits and goats having their fur torn out, sheeps being hurt and traumatized, cows being skinned, all that makes me want to cry, not wear proudly the product of their suffering.
Still, I'd freeze horribly without my wool coat.

I never realized that you don’t have your ears pierced since you wear earrings! I also don’t have mine pierced :) I feel like jewelry is what makes an outfit, but it’s also where I struggle to find the right pieces. I’m trying to build a collection of simple & stackable jewelry pieces that I can wear with most everything. The clip on earrings that I have are cheaply made for Clair’s (a little girl store) and consequently are too tight on the earlobe. I’m not sure where I can get quality clip ons for adults. Any advice, or should I just look in thrift stores?

The video is nice. I loove the art teacher look ❤ But I clicked on this super fast because I want to dress more sustainability and I hoped for some useful links. There are hardly any second hand stores in my county, so I hoped you could recommend some companies that do great things (vendors, online thrift platforms, sustainable companies...) Maybe in another video? I am unsure about shopping sustainable products from very far away and then have them sent half way around the globe. But the only videos with recommendations I find are from the US.

I have opposite problem. Sooo hot I try to keep things loose, light cotton. Anything that is a little thick, it's a nope. Yet you still need to wear a long sleeve shirt walking in the sun. It's all a juggling act. When I was in canada I just layered alot of clothes, I'd never done it before but hey I didn't do a bad job. Only bought a coat.

Some sheep in the industry, especially when it comes to big scale farming, aren’t treated very nice, they are cut, kept in unideal conditions and many farmers still use mulesing, which is just awful 😕
There is also the overlaying issue that today sheep are bred to produce so much more who’ll than they naturally would, to the point that we bred them to be dependent on humans to remove the wool, which is a general ethic issue I think 😊

my mother has a fur coat (artic fox, white with black streaks, beautiful to look at) that she was given as a wedding gift, in 1981. she has worn it 3 times. it sits in the wardrobe and now she is asking me if I want it, and I must say I am conflicted. I fully agree with your pov of rewearing wool and other animal derived products but I don't know if I'd feel comfortable wearing a fur which is widely knows as having an incredibly cruel method of "production". also, I feel it's too beautiful to just wear it as an everyday coat, and I do feel self conscious at the idea of the sideway looks I'd get on the street. what would you do? appreciate the input. thanks

Don't overthink it, it's old and only you know where it comes from, faux fur can look the same. The deed has been done such a long time ago, don't make their death pointless. Rock it!

You are not supporting any fur farms by accepting a coat from your mother. You can only wear it on special occasions if it makes you too uncomfortable, but I personally believe that it’s better to use the product so that the fox’s life is not wasted in a closet

i got a fur piece from my Gran. I couldnt wear it as people were rude and assumed i bought it new. However, I wanted to honor the foxes it was made of . I brought it to my mothers friend whom is a skilled seamstress and she made it into many items for me . A hat , a collar, cuffs ,and a scarf. I dont wear the hat a lot as people do comment on it. No one has ever commented on the other piece tho and i wear them often and think of my Gran.

I love thrifting for clothes whenever I'm in town, sometimes you can still get really good quality and clothes with labels "Made in England" (I live in Scotland) and not Made In China.
I'd love your thoughts on my friend's unpopular opinion : "if you can't find something in charity shops it's better to buy new clothes (if you rrreaaally need them) in Sales and not the original price, because those Sales would be thrown away if they can't be sold. She was in disbelief once when I told her how many weeks I had been browsing around our second hand / vintage stores for a coat because it wasn't available in my size for a while. @Gittemary
