    KOTOR 1 and 2 are my top two favorite video games ever (with a slight nudge to KOTOR 2 for Chris Avellone's writing). I've lost count how many times I've played through both titles. It can be challenging at times on Taris, but a sneak-attacking scoundrel/guardian build is highly recommended for KOTOR. Maneuvering around the battlefield and sneak-attacking for big hits is a really fun way to spice up the combat as a Jedi rogue. Sad, we will likely never get anything like these games ever again. Star Wars Outlaws definitely isn't replacing the KOTOR games anytime soon, 2024 Ubisoft isn't even in the same league as old-school BioWare and Obsidian.

  • @ghjong001

    We'll never see a Star Wars game or property like KotOR 1 or KotOR 2 ever again.
    Edit: Also the combat in KotOR isn't real time, KotOR's combat is built on a modified version of the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons ruleset also used by the Bioware Infinity Engine D&D CRPG's and, like them, uses six second combat rounds with dice rolls in the background, it only has the appearance of real time combat thanks to the animations and a switch to a third person view instead of top down/isometric.
    The only downside to the KotOR games is that everything not Star Wars about them, is just proto Mass Effect, and Mass Effect simply does it all better.

    I have been waiting for your take on KOTOR for a while. It is one of my absolute favorites. For the most part, I think your review is pretty damn spot on (although I will still fight you about Tyranny). I enjoyed KOTOR immensely. I did feel that the plot was a bit... clumsy at times, and half of the characters are insufferable, but it hit my "wish fulfillment" button really solidly. It is also the first game that I immediately started a second play through the same night I completed it.
    The older I get though, the more I have a hard time differentiating whether a game is amazing because it is objectively great, or whether it has just shaped my perspective because of when I played it. A long time ago, I was part of a play-by-post SW role playing group online. It was pretty much entirely community created, and although I didn't know it at the time, was HEAVILY influenced by KOTOR. Once I played the game a couple years later, it hit me pretty hard, and I cannot divorce the game from my RP group. Good to know that people are still enjoying these games as much as I did.

    • @YeOldEntertainment
      @YeOldEntertainment  10 днів тому +1

      It is objectively great... because it shaped your perspective. I can say that I was there almost since the very beginning of gaming. There are only a handful of games that I experience by looking at them through the rear view mirror. I was there when every game came out. But only a few have had a lasting impact, only a few games have contributed to shape my profile as a game. KOTOR is one of those.

  • @jimmym3352
    @jimmym3352 13 днів тому

    I'll always remember trying to beat that final bounty (was his name Starkiller?) at level 2. Since you sometimes like to hold your level at 2 so you get more jedi levels. Something the sequel wisely did was allow you to get jedi at level 2. That said, I don't recommend people do that for their first playthrough. Beating him at level 2 was always such a challenge.
    Keep in mind this was a game designed for console first, PC later. So some of the jankiness comes from that. It's a better port to PC than Jade Empire was. And as mentioned in the video, GOG version is your best bet.

  • @GamerGarm

    I too watched Star Wars on Betamax taped from the broadcast on TV. It was my Dad that recorded them.
    About the "BioWare early game character duo", it goes even before KoTOR. Who does Gorion's Ward meets in the Friendly Arm Inn, the first two companions meant to join the party?
    Why a male agreable, friendly and even somewhat pushover character. Is it Kaidan Onasi? Or Alistair Jacobs? No no no... its Khalid. And right alongside him is a bossy, disagreeable, arrogant and challenging lady. Is she Morrigan Williams? or Bastila Lawson? Yup, you guessed it, Jaheira.
    And I know you get Imoen first, but she was added later in development when they realized there was no Good aligned thief. And sure, there's Xzar and Montaron but they are not really 'meant' to join you in the same way as Khalid and Jaheira, who even Gorion says to seek out when you leave Candlekeep. And unless you are doing an evil playthrough, they will leave you anyways.
    What I am saying is that I agree with your assessment, but BioWare basically just repeated the Khalid and Jaheira duo on every subsequent game. And Carth and Kaiden even have the same voice actor!

    • @YeOldEntertainment
      @YeOldEntertainment  14 днів тому +1

      Oh, watching your favorite betamax tape was TIGHT! As for Jaheira and Khalid. Yes, you are a 100% correct. And Khalid was the worst of them all... he even stuttered and said that he was not the best to lead the party... But I purposefully left them out for purely arbitrary reasons... I happen to like Jaheira. She's been in my party from the minute I could and all the way to the end EVERY time I've played. And even romanced her in BG2. But I don't like these other companions (Morrigan, Miranda, Ashley, Bastila, etc). So yes... I was cherry picking XD. (People on the other tribe do it all the time!)

    • @GamerGarm
      @GamerGarm 13 днів тому

      @@YeOldEntertainment I am the opposite. I like Khalid. I was a kid when I played it the first time and I found his earnestness endearing. And, for all his faults, he was a very good tank. Because of his Str people gave him s**t but he wasn't meant for DPS. He has high Con.

    If they made a sequel I think they should get rid of the spikes/parts for hacking and repairs. Because if you've invested in a hacker character it's what you're going to want to do every time you see an opportunity. If anything they could combine those 2 skills into 1 hacker style of play.
