Thanks Josh for getting back to Hua Chenyu. He is such a unique and gifted artist; a brilliant composer and an incredible performer. You are right, for Hua it is about the message and the emotions of a song. He sees his voice as an instrument to help convey the emotions/message. In this video, he was 28 years old. He just turned 31 years old in February. He has many amazing new songs of his own compositions which he performed on Singer 2020 (Bullfight, Madhouse, Seven Personalities, New World, I Really Want To Love This World, Arrival). Unfortunately, UA-cam has been actively blocking most anyone who tries to review them. His songs from Singer 2018 do not seemed to get blocked much. I have shared your video with the Hua Chenyu Foreign Martian Facebook Group. Thanks again for your thoughtful and insightful review!

Thank you for this reaction, your comments were deep and very interesting. For your next reaction, I recommend you "I am what I am" from Singer 2018. I am sure you would be glad to hear it. The lyrics are very powerful (among the most powerful ones I have ever seen) and with Hua's rendition it gives another unforgettable performance. The story behind this song is also very touching in link with the original singer / composer (Leslie Cheung who was a huge singer and actor from Hongkong and who tragically left this world in 2003). Hua admires him a lot and this song is very precious for him. He said once that it was his favorite Chinese song.

So so so nice to see you react to Hua Hua again! Since you just watched Fake Monk and the beginning story, you heard Hua Hua say he is lucky because he's received a lot of love. He created a song with a MV with Martians that talks about that love. I would highly recommend a reaction to both the Teaser for Conversations With Martian Children and the Official Music Video. They can be found on Hua Chenyu Eng Subs. The teaser shows the creation of the song and the MV tells the story of this beautiful love. I feel it's Hua Hua's way of thanking the ETs who love him so much. Also, Hua Hua sings one of Aurora's songs (Escape From Utopia). I wish we could hear Hua Hua sing "Through the Eyes of a Child" with Aurora and that she could join him in singing his incredibly amazing song "Giant Deer".

Have you noticed how Hua Chenyu quite often seems to emerge from the end of his sing appearing to have just left the world in which he has been in whilst he is singing. It is almost as though he is surprised to see everyone in the audience. It makes his singing even more engaging.
Thank you for this reaction video. The song, the performance and your reactions are very moving and I guess everybody who experienced rough times being a child and growing up can relate to this. I appreciate your sensitivity in dealing with this here in this video.
When I watched this performance of Hua Chenyu for the first time with English subtitles there was a movie going on in my head about myself going through hard times combined with astonishment because of the abilities of the artist. It was something like suffering and healing at the same time and I admit that my eyes were filled with tears.

I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction and commentary. Much respect for your research and already understanding and appreciating where Hua gets his inspiration from. This is once in a lifetime performance. He will probably never perform this way again. As he says when he sings the same songs, his feelings will change. For those that don't get this performance and thinks it's all about screaming, would understand by how you explained this performance and hopefully they will appreciate this as intended. I saw a clip of him rehearsing this and it was even crazier than this, that it really impacted those watching and hearing this. This really touches me deeply and totally relate to his interpretation. The laugh I see it as sometimes you just want to laugh crazily, cry or scream to yourself when there's no other outlet and no ones around. i just love his sweet smile at the end.
I'm anxious for you to see his 2019 performances from concert and Singer 2020. You will see more of his creative compositions that will keep amazing you. He is continuously revolving in music which you will notice as you see more of his current songs.
Josh, I went back to replay your reactions and just want to say your words really touched me throughout the whole performance. You just never know when the right words will affect someone in their time of need and your kind encouragement may. give that push one needs. Hua not only is a great performer he’s so wise beyond his years. His many interviews reveal so much of his philosophy and i think that is why he is so relatable on many songs he sings. He always says it’s not about how technically perfect you sing, it’s about the emotions you want to emit.

He sang nearly every song from his new Mega-hit 4th Album New World (Which was released during the competition on April 2020).

Hua wrote a song names "The Salt of the Earth" about environment(not only that) through talking to the God, which is similar to "The Earth Song" of MJ. And another song names "God Tree" is talking about the consequence after destroy the environment. You can get familiar with these two songs.

Respect! Please choose 7Personalities for your next reaction. In this song he is also using different vocal techniques to convey emotions/personality. Of course he does that in every song, but here. 7P is a true masterpiece. I prefer the first ever raw concert performance, but the audio isnt that good. New Year Gala is slightly downplayed imo, but with better audio.
He also did it on Singer 2020. The view is closer but it tends to get blocked, so you may want to see it after your reaction. One is more expressive than others, but each performance are just great!

Trust me, everytime I watch this performance, I get nightmares for days. Not because it's scary, but because of the amount of emotions overwhelming me. It is truly a masterpiece.

Thank you so much for going back to Hua Cheney :) It’s a bit interesting that in China, there’re not many music you-tuber commenting on the skills of singers, one day I jumped into one video suggested by UA-cam of one us vocal coach listening and commenting one song from Hua. Then I started to realize how good he is. I knew he’s a talented singer, and his performance onstage is very impressing, but Hua is a person with so many “hot discussion”, he has so many haters and lovers on every social media, this kind of neutral comment can only be found on UA-cam. Thanks again Josh for commenting Hua’s Fake Monk. I really appreciate that as Hua’s reaction video can’t get as many as Dimash’s

Thanks so much, Josh. This is such an amazing performance. I love it, though I didn't the first time I heard it. It frightened me. My daughter still won't listen to it. It gives her nightmares. It's surely very powerful either way. This song is proof positive that adults have no idea what they do to their children. Hi, may I suggest you check out (Charlie) Zhou Shen! Excellent singer who won China's Singer 2020 competition!
Zhoushen is also a good singer but he didn't won in the compitetion. Hua Chenyu won the China Singer 2020.

@@Sonia-ll9cf My bad..I thought he won. Have to say..I just checked out 3 performances by Hua Chenyu during Singer 2020,,not one did you hear his voice pure. Each time it was "supported" by other voices or electronic sounds. Sad to see that in China too a competition supposedly about vocals was not won by the person with the best vocals.
I have not heard the other competitors and can't therefore say for a fact that Zhou Shen had the best vocals of that competition but I can say..based on what I have seen of the two during that competition...Zhou is definitely a better vocalist than Hua.
First of all, only a few songs needs some effects and Hua chenyu did it just to make their work more phenomenal , it doesn't mean that his singing abilities is weaker than anyone.
Actually, he is the only one who sing in front of a single piano (fake monk 2018) or sing with an Unplugged guitar without any accompaniment(contra in the wild 2020)
Yes Zhou's voice is clear, but it is his biggest advantage, so he will choose and sing songs to show these advantages.
However, i didn't see Zhou shen sing any song he composed since theme of singer 2020 is to compete their music abilities including their composing abilities right? I am not sure if you watch the whole series of singer 2020, but they invite all youngs musicians because the show needs to see young blood's creativity, and their courage to bring new things to the chinese industry.From these perspectives, Hua and Tia did the best.

Yes zhou has great vocal abilities, but in my mind, just showed off his voices isn't enough.His high notes is great but i didn't hear his great low notes.This show called singer, not a Tenor and soprano competition.(Actually,Zhou shen's vocal abilities are not as good as MISIA, vocal range are not as good as Dimash)
Furthermore, it will be a shame that nowadays singers are not brave enough to sing sth other than covers .Sorry i am a bit mad because i learned music and i am a Chinese.To you guys, these are just tv shows or so it's normal that you are not worried about our country's music industry,but as someone who learned music, i do care.
People like Hua chenyu is rare in china, so he is already hard to be himself.I just hope that he will get what he deserved and insist on what he do on music, any thing good for a song including sound effects or sth, not for a competition.Just like he always treat himself as an instrument! "Human voices are just parts of a piece of art "like what he said!
And i hope that more chinese young musicians will insist to be themselves, never afraid to be criticized by the mean world.

@@lingxiaoqian3422 Firts off all..I never said his vocals were "weak". I said average. Of course I might have added that by my standard "average" is by no means weak. I hold high standards.
I also never claimed Zhou's range equals Dimash. Like I explained..range is not the only aspect determining good vocals. And good vocals is what I care about. Especially when judging...vocals. Songwriting doesn't relate to vocal ability.
But you have to be aware..the notion that a singer's quality as a vocalist is related to whether he/she also composes..that is a silly modern American notion. So, if you care about Chinese music bizz..you'd be wise to reject such American notions. As we can all testify to...their notions destroyed the art of music greatly. Which is why I , as a non Chinese was glad to discover the Chinese shows..which seemed to be all about actual music.
As for Zhou singing songs which suits his voice...well DUH! It would be pretty stupid as a vocalist to sing songs which do not suit your voice. Great singing is about vocal control ( and good control can extent one's range) and emotive ability in my eyes .
One of my favourite singers has a range of 3 octaves but generally uses only half.
But to great effect.
As for singing with nothing but a piano..I have seen Zhou in rehearsal for another show with nothing but piano.
I only spoke about Huya's vocals and not other aspects because I was surprised they weren't better than they are. I did not check out a great many performances because the first 3 all had enhanced vocals...not really my thing. They were also al very much in a style called emo..again not really my taste.
Finally..even though I am not Chinese ( I am from the Netherlands), I do care about Chinese culture. I hold China and it's impressive history in the highest regards ( in spite of it's present political system/issues. In China's history these are but temporal ) and I care about culture in general..from whatever country.
