Just wanted to say that this works incredibly well with the song synced up
It really shouldn't work as well as if he layered over the song himself and controlled the volume at the appropriate times, but somehow it really does.
I think maybe it's because this method respects the song more, and that we get a clear sense of the craftsmanship that goes into these videos.
no cappp
Not here, I accidentally played Dschinghis Khan - Moskau instead. It was a very weird experience.
It’s actually awesome to watch with the silence without the music track too
ikr? so glad I did that
I once saw somewhere that Bela Lugosi's Dead is considered "Freebird for goths"
In 1986 I met a girl in Washington DC. She wore black and chains. She played this song for me.... I was a 21 year old from Kansas.
She also played me the Cure....it was a like a dream that summer.
Thank you Nancy. I will always see you in my dreams.
What a lovely story. Thank you for sharing :)
Such a lovely story, would like to read more about it
@@nixdeity The story starts with me AWOL from the Navy on the back of a friend's motorcycle with 6 oz of coke...great story.
Yeah this whole syncing music to video concept is the best idea anyone has ever had for music youtube, imo. You're a really skilled editor too, this was great.
It was a pain in the ass. I didn't realize the first time around I was supposed to play the song while the video played but as I was watching the video I kept wondering where the music was. So I dug the song out of my collection and then found out about the whole play it while the video was playing thing. I started it right when they said to but it still wasn't perfectly synced up. Was close though. Still far enough off to be mildly annoying.
But we never figured out what was so important about Bela Lugosi's dad smh

I came here to say this but knew in my heart it had already been said.
Its unfortunate too that Bauhaus was largely skewered in the music press during their prime and weren't taken seriously as artists. That's one of the reasons they had such a rocky relationship with the "goth" label - bands lumped into that genre typically weren't shown a lot of respect in places like NME, Sounds and Melody Maker. The Cure struggled with the same issues. Ultimately, Bauhaus ended up becoming far more popular and respected musically in the decades after they had broken up. I think that's partly why Love and Rockets were actually able to manage some chart success later on. Ditto with Peter Murphy's solo work. I saw them play on their reunion tour in 1998 and they were really good and the venue was sold out to boot, which I thought was great and a well deserved recognition of their talents and innovations. Since then they've done a number of other tours including one with Nine inch Nails that I kick myself for not going to see - particularly because on that tour Peter Murphy and Trent shared the stage a few times to run through a handful of Joy Division songs in a tribute to Ian Curtis, and I would have killed to have seen that. There are recordings on YT of some of them, but I wish I'd been there to see/hear it all live.
One other interesting tidbit - Bauhaus played the song for either Bela Lugosi's widow or his daughter (can't remember which), but whichever of the two it was genuinely really liked the song and said that Lugosi would have gotten a kick out of it as well had he been alive to hear it. I always thought that was a neat little side note.
Bauhaus were massive fans of Lee Perry, King Tubby, Tappa Zukie, and Jamaican dub records but they never got the acclaim or respect
from the music press at the time. Instead, they were called Bowie rip-off merchants which were totally unfair
So what's new? The Stooges, Suicide, Velvet Underground, Silver Apples, Sun Ra, etc were mocked and laughed at during their tenures.
That's the price you pay for not running with the mainstream.
@@robjones2408 I completely agree - that why I wish it hadn't taken decades for them to get more recognition. Not so much so that they end up in music critics' lists of great bands but because critical support can sometimes result in more people being exposed to the music as well, which can benefit the bands financially too. The groups you mentioned in your list all struggled to make a living while they were together. They put out great music but not a whole lot of people heard it at the time - which is a shame given how good they were. So, we can say - who cares if they were commercially/critically successful because they made good music and that's the most important thing. But had they been better recognized and sold more records they probably would have lasted long as bands and would have had the chance to release even more music (Sun Ra would be an exception b/c he was ale to continue to release a lot of stuff over the years even though it didn't sell that great - and I guess Iggy Pop and Lou Reed do/did have long solo careers as well, though largely to the same outcome). So while it doesn't touch the value of these artists for their contributions to music overall, its still a bummer when good bands can't make a decent living making music, or feel underappreciated. There's a lot of good musicians/artists/bands who self-destructed in the face of frustration/disappointment at not being appreciated for what they did, and that's not necessarily something to shrug off.
That story about playing the song for Lugosi's family is a really sweet demonstration of how art with darker style or theme can nonetheless be a really wonderful expression of love and positivity. I recently read that despite his reservations about being typecast after his role as Dracula, Bela Lugosi requested that he be buried in a replica of Dracula's cape. He left the original to one of his Children. That tidbit suggests to me that he might have felt very similarly about his iconic role to what Polyphonic describes the song as communicating.
I feel this AV approach is the beginning of something more old-school and yet new in social media at the same time.
Haven't finished the video but wym?
Like hearing a song on the radio while reading about the song and the band in a magazine
@@marekvyrostko so true. for once i don't feel old...
I felt like a kid listening to a record that said, "turn the page when you hear the chimes sound like this!" The method is classic, but the tools are new.
Some songs age like a fine wine, however I always felt this one was more like a well matured single malt. Not for everyone, but a complex flavour best enjoyed with the lights down low and a little water to help the flavours breath. And a timely halloween classic.
I use to listen to it driving in on grave yard to my chemical plant, put me into the mood for the night.
What's magical is this experience of joining together to be a part of a video unedited and pure. Totally awesome experience. Love this!
I think it’s important to note that “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” was before Joy Division’s first LP album. Though it was after Wire’s first albums and Siouxsie and the Banshee’s first albums- both those bands were using a darker, gothic sound
No hell no while Bauhaus started production first by a few months joy division realized there album first not to mention they where already making music before martin ever showed up to help shape the post punk that we know of with unknown pleasure Warsaw still sounds post punk martin simply gave them there proper shape
@@j0an-07-arc6 Bauhuas recorded “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” before Joy Division recorded their first album
@@j0an-07-arc6 And Warsaw (EP) by Joy Division leans so much towards punk that it doesn’t have a dark, gothic sound. Still a solid EP though
I don't really agree about Wire. They had some dark, intense songs but that is by no means the norm. Something like Map Ref, Outdoor Miner, Ahead, Kidney Bingos and really most of the first album are pretty melodically major key. Chairs Missing is pretty dark overall but on the whole I'd never name them along other Gothic bands. I'm sure they were a major influence on a lot of the mid to late 80s goth bands but to me they are the proto-typical post-punk band.
@@user-wl2xl5hm7k Actually, Unknown Pleasures came out two months before the single for Bela Lugosi's Dead dropped. Bela Lugosi's Dead was released August 6, 1979, while Unknown Pleasures came out June 15, 1979. It is worth noting though that so many other great releases came out around this time from groups that were either messing with the effects of Dub or Goth. Namely The Pop Group, who had already released their debut in April of '79 and Gang of Four, who would be releasing Entertainment a month after Bela Lugosi's Dead had dropped, along with Join Hands by Siouxsie & the Banshees. And later that year, Joy Division would release the Transmission single and PiL would release Metal Box towards the end of the year. That had to have been a hell of a time to be a fan.

To everyone commenting about the silence, watch the damn disclaimer at the top of the video. It's an interactive thing. You put the music on. I explain that in the disclaimer at the top of the video. And if you don't want to do that there's a link to an unlisted version with the audio synced in the description. I explain that in the disclaimer as well, but here's the link if you need it: ua-cam.com/video/l_wLqPpzeT4/v-deo.html
ffs.
Great idea horribly impractical, like I can't play two things at once ughh and love this channel I'll just have to try somehow
@polyphonic It would be great to put a waveform and counter on the bottom of the screen so you KNOW you synced correctly.
Can’t wait for the next one!
I just want to know the reggae song referenced in the title.
Oh, wait, are you calling BLD reggae?
I get 4 seconds in and find out that the Goth music analysis is brought to you by the world's most reputable porn and sex toy purveyor. That's so totally appropriate, I'm going to have to go have a cigarette and open a beer before continuing.
Edited to add: yep, after watching it both here and at Nebula (I wanted to hear it with the live version, which is the version I like best), A&E's money was well spent. Next time I need a new sex toy, gotta see if they carry it.
"Bring me more pornographers! They pay their bills!" - Me, when I worked in web hosting.
Turns out that a long song with stretches of instrumentals is a perfect fit for this synced-up A/V experience. Great job - do more!
If you get the countdown just right ,you get a cheap trip to wherever.
super idea, it makes the whole experience more interesting and it creates a super atmmosphere!
Such a bummer that there's not an easy and affordable way for you to license the tune. But your workaround is pretty cool. And the story and edit is fantastic. Thanks!
I have to admit skipping the intro sponsor spot I kind of skipped over the whole play the song along with the video deal. But as I watched the video I kept thinking, where's the music? Then I stopped the video and started reading some comments as I dug the song out of my collection. Because by then I'd decided to play it along with the video anyways. Then I found out I was supposed to! I started it when they said to start it and still didn't get the sync perfect. It was close though.
I’m very excited to learn the info in this, thanks a lot! Btw, there’s an audio blip at 1:58. Just wanted to let you know if you want to edit it. Also at 8:20.
i noticed that too! wondered if it was intentional somehow?
This was an excellent video. I'd love to see more like it. I was lucky enough to come across a copy of Bauhaus's 'best of' collection on CD and had it ready on my computer to listen right along with the narration. The one criticism I'd give is that sometimes your voice and the singing overlapped a bit and I had to lower the volume on my media player several times. Maybe include a suggested volume ratio to play the paired video and song at, if you make another one of these?
Yeah, I agree there. Some compression on the speech would have helped as well.
This is awesome, it’s like playing Dark Side of the moon with the wizard of oz! Well done!
Dude, have you tried playing Bauhaus’ Bela Lugosi’s dead with polyphonic’s new video? It totally syncs up, man!
My dad always plays this song in the car every halloween, my dad plays a lot of goth rock in general. Hearing this stuff a lot has defiantly caused goth rock to become one of my favorite genres over the years, well like four years, i'm not that old. I was kinda surprised to here you say the Bauhaus wasn't as well known as other goth rock bands. Anyway, love the video!
I really loved Bauhaus' cover of Ziggy Stardus
This song is so good! Great choice for a vid
INCREDIBLE editing job! And what a great idea - getting the band credit for stream plays AND keeping your video monetized. GENIUS. Well done!!!
I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this. It honestly got me emotional, pairing the lyrics with the imagery. I guess once a goth, always a goth. 🥀🖤
It's a funny coincidence that I just watched Bela Lugosi's Dracula for the first time last night. This video is so cool synced with the song, it makes for a really unique experience.
This might be my new favorite video on this channel. Just a banger, start to finish, specially with the editing alongside the music. Even the edit itself feels like a slow burn, just like the song :)
This was amazing! I love the interactive aspect of this video, and as always you've hipped me to some new music that I would have otherwise never listened to! Thank you!
These play-along vids are great, and this is a song I'd never really paid attention to before, but found intriguing.
Many thanks
What an awesome idea to have the song sync up with the video!!
Countdown indicates 1:31 as beginning point. I couldn't find it at first.
Such a great idea, add viewers to combine song and video. Shivers down my spine, what a great gift for Halloween!
THIS IS GREAT! Syncs up beautifully, I love the concept.
It would be great to put a waveform and counter on the bottom of the screen so you KNOW you synced correctly.
Can’t wait for the next one!
This is definetly one of the best videos I've ever seen here on UA-cam. This really blew my mind. Thanks for the gret content!
Followed this channel for a long time, this is one of your best videos yet. The interactive element is a stroke of genius!
oh my word the song syncs up so well with the video!!! amazing job polyphonic!
A brillinant idea you guys had with this video format. A great trick to fully experience the sonic as well as the visual content as intended without the problem of youtubes monitization barriers. Good job fellows and please keep it up this way. It sure makes it more intresting and interactive.
yes! do this again! we loved it. limitation builds innovation.
This is hands down the best experience I've had on youtube in a really long time. Keep em coming 🥳🥳🥳
Dude. You got a new subscriber. I love videos that explore the history of songs, and I grew up loving Bela Lugosi's Dead. The music sync was perfect and this is very well produced. Loved every minute of it.
Great concept! The interactive/participatory element made me more engaged with the video than I would have been usually. I love your stuff, but I often put these types of videos on in the background as I'm doing something else. I watched this from start to finish without multitasking.
Plus, it's great to hear the song in its entirety as you are talking bout it!
Amazing videoooooo!!! A love letter to this story, and an incredible experience you created to work around this platform restrictions with music. THANKS!
dude, this video is amazing. by far your best. there is just something about making things sync up on our end! and the visuals, oh the visuals. that font was beautifully distorted.
That was fun! Great video on one of my favorite bands and singers. I liked the play along. Thanks!
Hey man, Ive been binge watching your channel after discovering it a few weeks ago, have learned so much about so many artists and music genres, and I love what you're doing with these interactive a/v videos (genius way around copyright!!), makes the watching experience feel personal. I look forward to every vid and im making my way thru your back catalogue. Keep up the amazing work!! Thank you for all you do, from a fellow Canadian music lover 🤟🎶
My friends asked what's my favourite video of all time on UA-cam and I immediately sent this. I forgot UA-cam had a favourites option but I remembered and added this to it it was so amazing. The visuals, the story, the interaction all made it seem so surreal. Love this channel.
You just blew my mind! Amazing work on the approach to this video!
This format worked really well! Great work. Id love to see more like this. We'll done. 👍🏼
wow, one of the most interesting looks at this song ive ever seen. This style of video is amazing and fits this song really well. Keep up the great work!
This was brilliant! I listen to Bela Lugosi's Dead about once a year, and every time I hear it, I'm reminded how utterly revolutionary it was.
Have you heard Warning Sign by Talking Heads?
This. Was. AWESOME!! Watching this on my tv with the song on the stereo was amazing. Well done.
Nice work! Synched up perfectly and was a real pleasure to watch. Kudos.
Congrats!! The video is so in sync with the song, it was great to watch
Amazing work. Love the music syncing especially. Great work!
Awesome video on one of my favorites songs of all time!! But damn... That segue at the end was a pro move
DUDE!!! This works like an absolute wonder!!! please keep this format
Watched the unlisted version and now this just to help with the views, awesome work as always
Unbelievable video! Amazing work yet again
This already became my favorite video about music. Ever. And I'm not even a great connoisseur of Bauhaus or goth rock in general. Thank you so much, this is wonderful.
Great video, and editing, the experience with the audio is just great!
Watching a video this way was such an interesting experience! I think that this is actually a brilliant idea for channel like yours to avoid copyright strikes, because it works very well with your video's format
Hey @Polyphonic I just wanted to say how great your videos are. You’ve opened me up to a lot of new music since I come from a bluegrass background. I also wanted to ask if you could possibly think about making a video about Tony Rice who was a very progressive guitarist in the bluegrass scene and was pretty much a rockstar. I know most people don’t really care for bluegrass but I figured if you could open me up to new music maybe other people to the world of bluegrass. Much love brother!
Your love for bluegrass is refreshing! Bluegrass is so underrated for sure!
the synchronization of the song and video works so well, really enjoyed the experience and info!
Love the format of the song sync. More of this, please, excellent!
Great video and video format, man. Fantastic watch.
Absolutely brilliant concept and execution! Well done
Jamming up the BBC phones wanting to hear a song again = you’ve hit gold.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS !!! thank you
The video synced up with the song perfectly! I really like this video format.
Great editing that syncs with the song, in addition to, neat background context. Never knew this much about the song and them
Had to sync it up a few times to get it perfect but ultimately it was worth it. This is a great documentary on a little known and rarely talked about subject. Glad someone is doing the homework we all should be doing. Great job man!
Excellent way to work around the copyright bots. And it worked perfectly! Clearly a lot of thought and hard work went into this. Just wanted to let you know that I respect and appreciate it.
this is incredibly well done. amazing video
I honestly love this! definitely interested in seeing more of these 😊
Incredible video, it creates an incredible atmosphere, great work!
Always good content. Thanks!
Woaahhhh that was awesome the AV experience thank you Polyphonic. 🥰
Easily one of my favorite songs of all time. This video perfectly met my expectations. Love this audio/visual stuff. UNDEAD! UNDEAD! UNDEAD!
Fantastic job! I pulled out my 12” single and it synched right up. This is the second vid I’ve watched from you that is synched to the song and I love it!
If they make a steady habit of pulling this stunt the next time I see them recommended I'm going to have to ban them. Because this was a total pain in the ass.
Thank you so much for this... I've been a huge Bauhaus fan, this was perfect. you rock
This worked remarkably well. I was worried I'd slightly mistimed the song until the credits lined up so perfectly. It's nice to see you expand your art in this way. My only criticism is that sometimes it was hard to hear you over the song while keeping the song loud enough to provide the soundtrack. But subtitles might have helped there. Great work.
I didn't have the sync entirely spot on. I did have to play with stream levels in an attempt to get the audio balance right throughout the video too. I feel like now they owe me for doing the editing.
Well Done!! Thank you Polyphonic!
This a very cool video. It's helpful to the artist because it gets them some plays on streaming services. It's also helpful to you because you don't have to deal with the crappy algorhythms that get your videos demonetized. Good job. I hope you do more of this in the future.
I absolutely loved the interactiveness and the experience of this video! I was hooked from start to finish and it made me look at this song in a whole different light. One thing that really hit me at this moment was that because I was born waaay after the release of "Belo Lugosi's Dead", I never got to experience what it must have been like when all those new subgenres were popping up. I'll def. Be sharing this around :)
That was a lot of fun! I definitely encourage you to use this format again in the future!
i missed the countdown and hit play on the song like half a second late... whenever murhpy's voice would come up that would give his singing a beautiful echo, kinda eary. Great video dude
This was a great experiment I really enjoyed it. I look forward to more of this style of video.
Awesome video. Really makes me appreciate this song even more.
That sponsorship segment was a suprise to be sure, but a welcome one. Nice.
Thank you for this.
Long time goth, and also love dub...and I did not know this. This may have become one of my favorite pieces of trivia around this band. Ty
This was so cool!! I love the sync stuff!
Excellent work, I thoroughly enjoyed the effort you put in here. While I was a little young to appreciate Bauhaus at the time and I'm too old for clubs and gigs nowadays it's great how one of the more influential pieces of music for goth is still appreciated today as the art it is. Accidental, minimalist but still absolutely wonderful. It was probably mid to late 80s when I first heard it but it's one of those things that never really goes away.
This is awesome.
Please do lots and lots and lots of these.
OMG YES I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!!
I can't wait to see them perform tomorrow!
Just finished the video and my god its a masterpiece!! syncing up the music to the video really elevated things and was beautifully crafted!
I gotta add, the popularity of this song was CEMENTED when Bauhaus played it during 1983's The Hunger, a movie staring David Bowie. In the opening credits, Bauhaus WAS the movie.
Bauhaus bersion of ziggy stardust is amazing as well. did it justice.
Damn, This was an excellent video. I have ADHD, and... I was fully immersed and engaged from beginning to end. Couldn't peel my eyes away once the music synced
That was incredible, especially for my first exposure to the channel
and frankly
Probably going to subscribe now
I just love it, thanks so much for you work, saludos from Chile!
Gotta say, you managed to make the DRM restriction work for you. Pretty cool. Still sucks that you have to work around stuff like that, but well done.
Brilliant synching with the song! Excellent video, very educational about the origins and history of the song.
I've watched hundreds of thousands of videos on youtube and I'm pretty sure I've never seen a video like this! Your contents always great but this is truly a masterpiece
This was incredible! really enjoyed this idea!
Great video - I loved they syncing with the old footage. In case no one mentioned it below, this song was also used in the opening credits club scene of the 1983 vampire movie The Hunger, and it was absolutely perfect.
